  • Stimulus Response Theory was proposed by Edward Thorndike, who believed that learning boils down to two things: stimulus, and response. In Pavlov’s famous experiment, the “stimulus” was food, and the “response” was salivation. He believed that all learning depended on the strength of the relationship between the stimulus and the response.

Some feedback, there's almost no silences between sentences in this video (speech). It doesn't really sound natural and also makes it harder to follow I think.

Yeah, the dog was conditioned to salivate every time he heard the bell, thinking there was a reward.
Now, after the dog died, years later, they found a book note with written observations from the dog.
One of them said: funny thing, every time I salivate. he writes, thinking he's discovered a new principle.

Pavlovian (or classical conditioning) is not an S-R (stimulus-response) paradigm. It is a stimulus-stimulus paradigm. The animals did not have to 'choose' to make a response to get the outcome. The bell rang, and eventually, the association was formed in the brain. The dog didn't make any responses in that scenario. However, the cat in the cage did make a response to the lever. Thorndike did stimulus-response learning which eventually refined into stimulus-response-outcome or S-R-O.

Classical conditioning is an SR paradigm.Conditional stimuli and conditional response ( CS&CR). Pavlov paired two stimuli, then took away the neutral stimulus, and the dogs responded ( salivated) automatically / involutarilly to the remaining conditional stimulus. Operant/ instrumental conditioning is voluntary. Classical is involuntary.

Thorndike had a hypothesis not a theory....even though that's what they called it. His "theory" is only relevant to dogs and cats, not humans.

@@pradipjgurung I don't know why they took a break with uploads, but I'm assuming Theodore (the channel owner and the old narrator) just hired someone else to narrate, or asked someone he knows to narrate this for him. That's my guess.

you pictures are confusing and doesnt match what youre saying, like the cat in a box you shown a picture of a cat in a bag which made me think the experiment was conducted with a bag instead of a box or a lever. Until you kept mentioning the lever later on. Then you mention a person with a stomach ache but you show a person with back pain... this constanty keeps tripping me up and slows my learning down... i might be mentally slow but god damn these "trip ups" are confusing and slowing me down even more
