Quarantine has me watching waaaaaaay to many reviews of a frigging keyboard.
Bottom line if you have an iPad Pro spend the $300 and leave your laptop at home.
I felt this to my core and it attacked me
This needs to be plastered everywhere on every magic keyboard video.
Spending $300 for a keyboard/trackpad is utterly insane as far as I am concerned. There are so many in the $50-75 range on Amazon that do a decent job and actually protect the iPad. Sure, they aren’t quite as good and use Bluetooth... But they aren’t 6x worse. I have one that I enjoy very much for my older iPad Pro. It cost me all of $45 and has tactile keyboard, backlit with 7 different LED colors and 3 brightness levels, has a port where you can snap in your pen completely hidden and the viewing angles are 360 and from closed to all the way flat. No touchpad though. Anyway, just my opinion. It’s just the whole principle of not spending nearly as much for a darn keyboard as it would for another non-pro iPad. For that price, I’d just get an MacBook.... or heck a 13” MacBook Pro.

You can’t, even with this keyboard it doesn’t make the iPad a laptop, it was never about the keyboard, it’s the operating system.

Don't compound one mistake by making another.... You've already spent a thousand dollars on a tablet that cannot replace your laptop...my advice? Minimize the damages going forward.

Bought the magic keyboard 2 days ago but I’ve been watching reviews for the last 2 days. i don’t have any complaints for the keyboard. The keys are really nice. I went into the store and tried the Smart Keyboard keys and it felt really weird. I’m excited to be able to work remotely without having to buy a new MacBook.
I’m watching this even though I’ve already bought and typing with it right now lol ....

bar10 ml Not the person you asked, but I got this last week for my iPad Pro as well so I feel like I might be able to help. So far the magic keyboard has made me use my iPad WAY more than before. I got my iPad in mid 2019 and it was cool, but felt too limited with just the Smart Keyboard that Apple also sells for the iPad. I basically stopped using it and only used my MacBook Pro for everything... but this new keyboard changes that completely.
Having the trackpad makes this really feel like a mini laptop replacement. It’s perfect for browsing the web, watching videos, basically 99% of the stuff people use their laptops for. I’ve actually been using it MORE than my MacBook Pro lately because it’s more enjoyable to use the iPad with this case. It’s faster, with the 120Hz display everything feels super smooth and fluid. If your friend really does only do basic things on their laptop then I think this would be a better combination. I’d recommend your friend at least buy this combo (12.9” iPad + Magic Keyboard) to try for for two weeks before committing to the MacBook Air. That way if he likes it, he can stick with it, but if not he can just return it and go for the Air like he originally planned to. Hopefully this helped though!

I just got my keyboard yesterday and I don’t see how i was getting along without it. It is way better than the other keyboard. I guess that is why it costs so much more.
After watching this, I just realized that I luv typing on the screen more than keyboard lol
This is the only magic keyboard review. It’s the hands down, most simple and just straight up.
I bought the Magic Keyboard a couple days and I have to say it’s pretty impressive. I used the Logitech Folio Touch before and I wasn’t very impressed with the keyboard so here I am with the official magic keyboard. It is twice as expensive as the Folio Touch but it’s a much better experience.
5:19 That's a good point Justin. With a MacBook, you need to send in your whole device for repair whereas with an iPad you can just send your keyboard for repair and you still have a fully functional device.
That’s not a good point, evidently you’re one of the people that bought the keyboard and keep looking for good points to justify your purchase.
I just got my iPad Pro 2020 12.9 and Magic Keyboard and I’ve loving my workflow with it. I still have my MacBook Pro but this will be with me everywhere I go where my MacBook Pro will be with me back and forth to my office. While I’ll still use my MacBook Pro along with this iPad, it will be replacing my MacBook Pro when I’m on the go other than back and forth to the office. Definitely recommend this magic keyboard.
I just bought the 11 inch magic keyboard on Amazon for $199. Great keyboard. By I have long fingers and they keep hitting the bottom of the iPad while typing. I wouldn’t buy it at $299 but at $199 it’s awesome.

What's really magic about this keyboard (or, really, about Apple and it's marketing techniques), is that some people will agree to pay 50% more for a tablet to get it with a keyboard.
I sold a $3,000 gaming laptop just to get an iPad pro + Magic Keyboard + Apple Pencil. I don’t even miss gaming. This thing is a beast. It’s everything I ever wanted for consumption, productivity, and portability. I don’t even mind the weight (I have the 12.9”). It’s still way better than a laptop or MacBook Pro, at least for my use cases. Converting it from a laptop to a tablet is as simple as grabbing a corner, pulling, and walking into the bedroom to play on it until I go to bed. Opening up the port on the bottom of the iPad Pro is a great design choice. Now I can import my videos and photos while my iPad charges. The Magic Keyboard is aptly named. It’s been a wonderful experience thus far. I actually feel like I’m living in the future each time I use it.

I’m late on this but I have the latest version of the iPad Pro with the magic keyboard and still to this day, my iPad Pro with magic keyboard is my favourite possession I own. It’s portable and just so easy to use!
Just got my magic keyboard last week and I’m loving it. Superb typing experience. Amazing quality. Apple knows how to invade my bank account!!!

Wish this would incorporate the iPad in tablet mode better. If you could take it off, close the keyboard and have it lay flat on top and magnetically click into place it would be perfect.
Since i got the magic keyboard and learned a slightly different workflow, ive been able to leave my macbook at home and take the ipad. And it can actually do things that a macbook cant, and its more enjoyable for every day things like streaming videos and taking notes and using Face ID to log into websites and pay for things online. Also, the extra usb-c port for charging is amazing since i can charge and hook up to an external drive. I may be imagining it but it feels like the battery life may even be better than my 2 year old macbook. Absolutely worth every penny.

In my opinion it's not a laptop/macbook replacement. It's an alternative to that.
You know that for multitasking... you DONT need the function keys just a 3 finger swipe up????
I was wrong about the iPad Pro Magic Keyboard. I was going to return it, but after I tried it out, I was hooked. I am still concerned that the cover would not protect the iPad or the iPen in the case of a fall, but I have decided that if I take off somewhere I will put the iPad into my UAG case. The iPad Magic Keyboard is such a wonderful keyboard/case. I am very happy with its quality. We will see if it turns out too bad and I end up regretting my purchase, so far I am quite satisfied with it.

Ive heard this a lot from so many youtubers, you can just get a MacBook for the same price as the magic keyboard and iPad Pro but if you are someone looking at an iPad in the first place I doubt a MacBook will be enough for you. I sold my MacBook because I wanted all of the apps the iPad has and the Apple Pencil, a MacBook just wouldn’t do it for me or so many other people. If you need an actual laptop then get one otherwise just get an iPad, you were going to spend around 1500$ either way unless it’s a cheap crappy windows or a chrome book.

I don't have any Apple products at this time and plan to get an IPAD Pro for working with action video cameras. The IPAD seems that it will be able to run the Activate software from a particular camera company. My PC's and Android phone do not work with camera software.
I like your review on the Magic keyboard, so I may be getting one of these for the IPAD. I have watched other reviews on the Magic Keyboard to understand how it works with the IPAD. So far it looks like it will work for my needs. Yes, I wished it had the function keys and Escape key without doing multi key presses to do the same thing.

Personally, for the price, I bought the Logitech CombiTouch and it was a load cheaper than the Apple version, which I just couldn’t justify. I’ve found it brilliant to type on, it has a trackpad and it also has function keys. I bought it for £79.99 here in the UK. This was for the iPad Air 3 though. Not sure how much it would have cost for the ipad Pro.
I looked on Amazon at this keyboard by Logitech and there are allot of negative reviews on this keyboard far as working correctly or breaking down. Will it work with the new M2 IPAD Pros, I am not sure since this comment is 2 years old. I may just fork out the money to get the Magic Keyboard and not worry about it.

I still don’t get the iPad Pro trying to be a MacBook Pro. As a owner of both I like the fact that they are separate. The iPad Pro is a great device but it gets cumbersome when you try to make it something it’s not. Most of the time I’m on iPad Pro and iphone pro it’s a fun combo. The mb pro for professional use and editing. Just my opinion tho
Agree for the most part...my only issue....why did you buy a $1000 iPad, when by your own admission, it cannot replace your laptop? Unjustifiable purchase in my eyes.

You can build a shortcut it quickly get tot the backlight settings. Then put that in the shortcuts widget and pin it to the home screen.
I dislike the design of needing to have your iPad naked to work with the keyboards and pencil. Mainly bc I love my poetic gummy case, it vents the speakers to be front facing, (massive difference, esp with low volumes) and it’sa very forgiving case

Almost bought it but unfortunately it doesn’t open all the way up! Which is a bummer to me! I do understand that for it to « float » opening the magic keyboard case has to stop at some point otherwise the hold couldn’t be as strong! But to me having a case that opens up all the way allows me to have a tablet experience, taking notes with the pencil and stuff! The keyboard is only accessory! Which Is why I stuck with the smart keyboard
The Smart Keyboard won't make the iPad a laptop replacement. It is MacOS INSIDE the iPad that would make the iPad a real laptop replacement. The iPad is not for working, neither for College. The iPad is only for multimedia consumption. iPad OS is just as a mobile operative system as Android and iOS. We need MacOS on the iPad for Apple to really rock it

good vid. On another note, I've seen so many vids of people trying to justify the ipad as some productivity device but I really think it's just a nice to have media device that can help with productivity. If your even remotely tech savy the ipad wont cut it alone. Which is prob apples' plan to keep selling the larger phone as long as possible.

It definitely has the potential to replace a laptop but I can’t help but have my macbooks. I was hoping to have the USB port free to connect my SSD to it and if I remember correctly, I took an m.2 SSD and put it into an ASUS enclosure and it connected. I have to make sure on that but I think I did. I’m using it right now but that’s because I don’t have a case with the new iPad Pro yet with the bigger camera bump. I think students could use it well without a laptop.

based on your described use case...a Chromebook would do....and it'll cost you thousands less. Be honest with yourself.... You don't need this iPad to do all those things you describe above.
For myself, I do not use my iPad Pro for work, but it is my personal laptop replacement. For me, the app availability is just more robust than on MacOS. I just recently made a Mothers Day presentation for my wife from my son, and it was all done on the iPad and it was just easier than if I were to use a MacBook. The ease in downloading photos, attaching music, is just much more fluid than again on MacOS. Decent video, though.
I am really tempted, but I've heard connectivity issues on using a battery pack to charge the keyboard and also how the tilt is limited as well. It's also pretty heavy

Since iPads were introduced I've never seen a co-worker use one at work. Never seen a colleague I was collaborating with from another agency use one. Never seen a student pull one out in a class. Never seen a student at the library writing a paper on one. Nor have I seen anyone at a conference pull one out to do a presentation. Wonder why that is???
Well it wasn’t till the past few years that it really began to be useful as a laptop replacement and hold a purpose. I’m in college and see plenty of students using iPads and Apple Pencils for notes.

The new Smart Keyboard also has the Apple Logo on the back. At least on my 12.9 Smart Keyboard it does. Not sure on the 11inch though.

I love my iPad 9.7 model from 2017. When I upgrade I will be going to QVC as they work with Apple and come out with the best packages and accessories for the price. I want the 10.2 iPad unless they have a different model come out. I still want an iPhone so I can be all on one system. Thanks Justin, love your videos.

I use my iPad Pro way more since I received my magic keyboard. Just for everyday computer task its a game changer and its as good as my iMac in that department. And like you said, I don’t know why, but I like to use it just for fun, its so more enjoyable to use my iPad now, it really feel like a 2 in 1 device.
Still not a good long term investment for the money.
i like it... but the two major issues i have are: no ideal drawing angle and no function keys

Why would you have desctop apps on it , when you can get apps that are custom made for the IpadOS ?
There should be more pro apps made for the IpadOS, not just copy paste fram desktop computer. it´s a different enviroment and it needs different UI/UX.
If I need a desktop program I just remote controll my mac mini over the wifi at home or at work. Heck I even remote controll our windows server at work from time to time.
Since the mouse I´m using is also supported by the most remote desktop app, I actually get a propper mouse when using it (and have been doing that long before IpadOS came)
95% of the other time though, the Ipad itself is more than enough.

Is it possible to place the iPad in both portrait & landscape mode on the magic keyboard? Meaning, will the magnet hold the iPad if placed vertically?
Only thing I was spirited with this keyboard is that it didn't come with Apple Care as an optional/additional purchase.
Apple Care is an unecessary expense, where so many trade up in a year anyway....after all, this is still just an iPad.

I’ve been using mine through this current semester and overall I’ve been happy but sometimes my iPad looses connection to the keyboard while I type and the on screen keyboard keeps popping up... eh
Justin I have a question and would be extremely grateful for your feedback. I’m buying a Mac Book Air for a friend which arrives today but I’m trying to change this now to an I pad pro set up. His needs are very basic but it seems many people are reporting that the air is not even coping with basic tasks without getting hot. I’m leaning towards the smaller version of the pro as it gives a better tablet experience and I’m guessing he will end up using it more tablet than lap top. However do you think that if this going to be a lap top replacement the larger version would work as well. Any advice appreciated.

I want to switch from a MacBook Pro to an iPad Pro. Most of my work is done on iPages. I don’t do any video editing or anything technical. Would the iPad Pro make sense for me. If yes, should I wait until next year for an upgrade?

That’s what I did. I ordered the 12.9 iPad pro and the magic keyboard. I have an old macbook pro 2014 that’s shutting off on me now and I was debating on whether I should get a new macbook pro or the Ipad pro with magic keyboard and I went with the Ipad
pro because of its versatility. You can draw, and type. iPad does things that macbook pro can’t do such as taking notes by hand and drawing, using the apple pencil, it’s much more to it but iPad just fits my needs the most.

Has anybody experienced lag/slow response while typing using this magic keyboard? Mine is driving me nuts on iPad Pro 11”, the response is extremely slow on latest iOS and didn’t find any useful solution. We tried the keyboard on another iPad and found it working great, any thought of what might be wrong?

You are the only one who said that USB-C charge-through port has the same charging speed as direct to iPad. It cannot be the true anyway, as additional connection exists!
it charges at 22W, iPad can max at 26W. Included charger is 18W.
