  • One Minute Bunkai: Shuto Uke coming at you again this time by reaching under your attackers arm and pulling him in a downward arc that is very easy to continue with the "shuto hand". Note that this application focuses primarily on the "other hand" which is the principal and initial part of this bunkai. A practical principle of pulling leverage, if your opponent had his head near your chest you could easily apply this by reaching under an behind his head and pulling his hair or ear. This is a very effective solution of a classic Karate move highlighting that not everything has to be against a punch. Note also that there is nothing keeping you from applying a simultaneous kick as you grab, thus disabling his ability to resist.

In Okinawa in the 1960's-70's Kata Bunkai was only really taught after a dedicated student put in a lot of time, effort, and hard work. It wasn't a free gift. If you came early, stayed late and worked on your kata diligently--if you politely and discretely asked questions as to the usage, Sensei would gradually show you bunkai. Kata Bunkai is the real essence of the Old Okinawan fighting system. It is a treasure that was never revealed so easily. So you are lucky to see these fine vids from OMB!

Antonio, this is why so often the best bunkai is the simplest and right under our noses. Extra complicated stuff usually never works for real. I recommend to all to look for the simplest things, from all angles, sides, and fro attacks that are real. Not everything is a punch or kick, a lot of bunkai is from pushes, grabs, chokes, hair pulls, do not look at kumite for bunkai that is the wrong direction.

Great stuff. This is literally a Kamai, Kamai from a kata, and the "hidden meaning" is so rich and effective.

very well done! when I lived in Okinawa in 1978, I student with GM Soken Hohan and Kuda Sensei. Learning Bunkai was earned the hard way. Keep up the excellent work & thanks for sharing!

I don't believe in keeping this knowledge secret like some do. It does not apply in today's world of drones and nuclear arsenals like it did in Okinawa in the 1700s. I am delighted that the videos have motivated you and thank you for your kind thoughts. The goal is to develop a deeper understanding of Karate, that it is not about judges and competition, it is about character development thru strength. Thus- Peace through "strength". The stronger your Karate the better human being you will be!

Officially Kyan Style, unofficially Gojuryu, and Chibana Ryu (plus Hung Gar, Wing Chun and Chen Tai chi and other things I have studied). On these videos the style really does not matter, I show Karate that can be applied to any style. In the end, style and organization is meaningless, it is the person that makes karate come alive.

Not all students can do what I do unless they have control. In those cases I tame it down to a simpler bunkai until they learn control. I describe this method of training as "taking it to the point of real hurt and pulling back at the last second" thus it gets as close to "REAL" as possible that is how you learn, its my way. Also I can't do this with just anyone, it takes a special person who is not afraid of physicality and is not fragile, they don't grow on trees.

great videos, i would really like to see the bukai of whole katas, as there are some strange moves in many of them which i just cant see that useful an application. Thanks so much for the videos, they are really helping me now that i teach and feel confident telling my students that kata is not a waste of time!

That is very true, today bunkai is everywhere. After all we are in the information age. In the old days you have to be sure of the person's loyalty and integrity. But remember this just because you see videos of it, does not mean anyone immediately understands it or can use it.

Physicality and closeness is integral to playing with your karate and understanding it. You cannot possibly achieve skill and understanding from a distance. You have to get down and dirty, and with contact. What you see in these videos is not really hurting anyone, we are just very physical with each other. My sensei was like that with me and it helped me to feel and be on the receiving end of these applications thus I knew their potential. I call it the language of Karate.

It is how we communicate with each other with Karate, not using verbal language but with the physical manifestation, that is how we share and talk with each other communicating the meaning of Karate, but doing it. Now I have to clarify that I do not condone being a sadistic SOB, I am very careful with my victi... I mean partners because I know I have superb control (picked it up in Judo). There is nothing vicious with what you see here, we are just playing out the moves.

dont forget to be realistic - you must do a bit of work whatever method you choose for learning uke I have spent months researching into teaching yourself uke and found a fantastic resource at Arthurs Uke Blog (check it out on google)

I knew you would ask these important questions so- if bald no can grab, if no ears be very scared, altho you could make a hook shape with index finger and stick it in the ear and hook and pull (just a theory). The Eagle union had all of them on strike so I could not agree on a contract for rights usage this time. I do know a large Owl, altho they have great claws the Owl-Hoot-Kiai would not have worked in this presentation. Seriously if all else fails apply Hammerfists and Elbows :)

Of course it is important to know someones background to see how they arrived at the knowledge they demonstrate. Funny thing is that the bunkai I have come to understand and demonstrate was not knowledge I learned from my original style (it was not available) all the bunkai I know has been from many other sources. In your case being you are Goju ryu this one is easily applicable to your basic Kake uke, one hand reaches under the other applies the head/neck control. Cheers!

I know that the style is meaningless in the end but I was interessted about it.
I do Goju Ryu myself since ten years, which is far more than half of my lifetime at the moment.
But this one is very interessting, I'll try it out at our Dojo this week.
    Thank you.

You now have the "Key" to unlock what is underneath these movements in Kata. You never thought Shuto could be applied this way, its the same body positioning of the hands but just takes you to look at it in a different way. You have to expand your perception and your view 360 degrees. Also there are no rules, who said you can't whip out a hammerfist at the last second, I did not plan for that when I was about to throw Rob, it just came out because the shot was there!

Angel-san, two things. What if I tried to grab the hair or ears as suggested in your description and he/she were bald or had their ears chopped off by a ninja? Second, the eagle claw to the throat. I did not hear the secret screaming eagle claw kiai?? :o Great clip otherwise!!

Don't feel like you were cheated or alone, Karateka of my/our generation were not taught bunkai by the previous generation, not because they did not want to pass it on, it is because they did not know it themselves. Karate spread throughout the world in the late 50s and 60s, that generation (most not all) unfortunately was not taught applications. They were really good at punching and kicking but the explanations for kata moves were really cheesy. Hey better than never right!
