Hey everyone, thanks for watching and supporting the show.
This interview was recorded weeks ago.
Chris is recuperating, and expects to be back in the saddle soon.
Let's all make sure to keep him in our thoughts, and send him good energy!
~CD
Entertainment is still alive and well. It's the Hollywood establishment that is already dead. I just enjoy all the great old music, movies, books, and video games. Once in a blue moon an indie game or a non-Hollywood movie will come along that's worth my time and money.
Hello Clifton! I've seen you in other videos and programs like Friday Night Tights and others. I've been meaning to watch your podcast which I watched this entire interview and I really enjoyed it. I am an African American actor and artist myself and I agree with and share your exact sentiments on what going on today; A.I. , the industry, DEI, woke culture, black culture back then vs. what it is now, all of it. I'm glad I got to watch your podcast in full. Look forward to watching more. My best wishes to Chris Gore. Take care Clifton! Hopefully one day we can talk in person.
I'd stroke out too if I saw that many bad movies.
I feel for him. Our Dad had a stroke back in 2016 and was hit pretty hard. He couldn't talk and passed away month later just before he was able to retire. So you never know what will happen at anytime. Hearing that Chris is recovering is good as he is an important collaborative voice with Garry and the guys at Midnights Edge.
great podcast Clifton, subbed
Praying for a swift recovery for Chris who just had a stroke. 🙏
I didn't know that, that's terrible. I hope he is OK.
@@brennancarter7721 it was thankfully a mild stroke and he was with Nerdrotic and Alan Ng etc who sent him to the ER
Amen!
Chris is a legend, I'm not a religious man, but I'm praying for his recovery. Early signs seem good from what I've seen.
He got Pfizered
I spent 20+ years working in theatre and live events. I have no sympathy for the decline of Hollywood.
In the end it's all business. The business of entertainment is not to dictate the tastes of the audience.
Quite the opposite.
Harsh but true.
@@CliftonADuncan I do feel sympathy for the crew who struggle. It's so often the case that those least responsible are the first for the chop.
Live will become more important than ever.
Hi guys. An Egyptian here. Just wanted to add that here in the Middle East, American movies and TV is close to death because people here have noticed all what you’ve been saying and have subconsciously replaced all American movies and shows with Asian ones, besides consuming other sources of entertainment in the form of UA-cam, podcasts and games. They’ve replaced great American artists with executives, this is what they get. Love Chris sooo much ❤
Traditional movies and TV shows don’t seem to be much on the radar of Gen Z Americans either. At best, it’s one option of many. A contraction of an industry dedicated to churning out feature films with bloated budgets and bloated runtimes was inevitable, but Hollywood has done themselves no favors by tying themselves to the mast of DEI and social justice.
Thank you for having Chris on-praying for his swift recovery! You have an awesome channel here Mr. Duncan.
As long as he doesn't listen to Tyler swift
"When I was 11, I was 30 years old", Chris you genius, you just perfectly described Gen X in 9 words! I'm Gen X, when was 10, I used to ride my bike to the local library thirsty for knowledge because we were too poor to have books. I used to spend hours flipping over the pages, finding Classic Science Fiction books from the 50s, geography books, just looking at all the beautiful maps, etc, etc. Then 2001: A Space Odyssey and Star Wars came out, wow! Mind blown. The 70s and 80s had so much great thought-provoking entertainment.
That's beautiful. Thank you.
We love your show here in Ireland ! You are amazing Clifton !
Wow, thank you!
I second that 👍
My main complaint is that nowadays Hollywood cannot write a likeable character to save their life and everything has to be dark and gloomy, and to me this is why Ted Lasso and Top Gun Maverick were such a hits.
They're obsessed with Grey Morality.
The idea that the good guys aren't really that good, and that a villain has a motivation for doing evil.
It was cool for a while, but now it's tiresome.
The talent is still there. Everything is still there. It's just a matter of changing this destructive mindset that has taken hold of so many in the industry, in so many industries. It can be done. We can swing this thing around. May God heal you, Chris Gore. I love your show too much. We need you.
Two of my favourite cultural commentators in one interview! Great stuff. Not just doom and gloom, but inspiring at the end too - and you're both so right. The audience loss of mainstream corporate entertainment can be a win for a more decentralised grassroots model of the arts. As a society we need to take back the means of cultural production and let it once more organically reflect the honest hopes, dreams, fears and joys of the present day human world, instead of 'culture' being hijacked into joyless and patronising ideological propaganda 24/7.
100
Love you Clifton. 🏴🇬🇧
Thanks, Clifton. Been praying for Chris' recovery!
Get well soon & thoroughly, Chris. 🪻
It’s good to see our brother Chris Gore. Glad he got this in before his stroke.
Get well Chris. 🙏🏻🤟🏻
Get well Chris!
I used to be homeless in Westwood and I would go to the library and read a book every day relating to film production. After seeing the direction film was going, from analogue to digital, I ended up going to Santa Monica College while sleeping in a dumpster. Eventually I would transfer to UCLA and graduating with a BS in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering.
To make a long story short, after going through predatory classes to enter into the Union, I was told that I wouldn’t be allowed to intern at Sony because they were looking for “Diversity”, even though I had demonstrated arguably the best portfolio over the course of the two year program.
That was ten years ago. A long and arduous path deleted because of an unchecked box.
Wow
Thank you sharing this podcast with us... I will pass it along.. Prayers out to Mr. Gore as well !!!!
You had to be on the couch to watch the show at the same time as everyone else (in your time zone anyway), the next day everyone was talking about the episode, sometimes talking about it and what might be coming next for the entire week. Game of Thrones would not have nearly the effect it had on people if it had been released now with the binge model
Video games and UA-cam have almost completely replaced my TV watching. I'm almost 60. For 40 years I watched TV every night. For the last 20 I hardly watch TV at all.. Sport, one or two shows a year. That's it.
The world Cup and the copa america for me as a arhentina fan watching TV to me is retarded and weird and I look back at doing if and think was I mad brainwashed a sleep who tne hell watches TV my TV is for pc switch and occasional movies
Why does it cost $200,000,000 to make a movie? The industry has a gigantic beaurocracy problem. Too many union demands, too much nepotism, too many empty suits drawing salaries.
It's ridiculous. With the advancement in technology, films should be cheaper to make than they used to.
@@badinfluence3814 I was on a TV set yesterday, over 200 crew standing outside to shoot a scene with 3 actors in a small room. There were 8 people sitting in video village, joking around and not even watching the monitors. The whole thing could have been done with 2 camera men, 3 lighting guys, a director and 3 PAs. Theres no way this can continue.
I’m commenting while listening but I’m glad to see you two on the same show, and I’m hoping for a speedy recovery for Chris.
Cheers.
Great interview. The disdain in Hollywood that Chris talks about here is everywhere, The service industry, social media, the civil service. The 'top down' anarchy that G.K. Chesterton talked about; anarchy because it is spiraling out of control and impossible to reverse. Very sad for a pacifist and humanist.
The irony is that the general public was pretty accepting of coked-out, debauched Hollywood. It’s when Hollywood decided to posture as our moral superiors that we decided they’re evil.
The situation smells like opportunity -- as long as there is some sort of actual demand.
Hollywood has trained me to believe I'm going to be preached and talked down to with every movie or TV show. And then when you don't go see a movie that wants to preach to you, directors and actors publicly shame you for it. Hollywood either isn't getting the message, or doesn't care. I can't see them ever winning me back as a customer.
Really enjoyed hearing Chris. Always love your show, Clifton.
I love you two and talking together. 2 very interesting people who are actually able to listen
Another awesome conversation.
Praying for Chris's speedy recovery.
Wishing you speedy recovery Chris and you look great. Clifton what a smooth soothing voice you have and a pleasure to listen to both of you true intellects. Let's hope the future is bright for real indie movies again like the old days. I have had enough of Hollywood and everything it now stands for. Orson Wells hated it and many other skilled intelligent directors have too. It's only when you see films that are completely original and small in budget that generally are the most memorable.
Great conservation between well minded and sane individuals in the arts.
Glad to see Chris back in action, and who better to chat with than Clifton. Great show!
I assume this was recorded before. I think Chris is still on the mend.
I'm a simple man, if it's Woke, I'm out. Then, and only then will I spend my valuable recreational time on watching their content. I'm sure I'm like most people, I work hard to earn money to survive, and when I'm not I simply want entertainment, maybe intelligent entertainment that inspires thought, like Star Trek USED to be. I don't watch anything to be brainwashed by morons. It really is that simple, and I'm pretty sure I speak for the majority of people on this planet.
I just don't want to pay for someone to preach to me from either far left or far right. Just put out a great story. They can keep their political and religious beliefs at home.
@@0tt0z Same here man, I'm an intelligent person, I don't need anyone to do my thinking for me. When it comes to entertainment I don't want to be preached to. Doesn't mean I don't like cleverly written political satire or social commentary like numerous Star Trek episodes that didn't preach, just a good story with complex morality where the audience is left to ponder afterwards.
Wishing Chris a speedy recovery. I agree with him, you have a fantastic voice!
Artists have always been on the fringes of society, almost as if it's their job to be. And using their creativity they try to push a little those boundaries in order to generate something that is out of the norm and that stands out due to it's beauty. It's this simultaneous work that breaks from the status quo of the time to represent an ideal. But when you remove the ideal and normalize the fringes of society that artists have the courage to tread / dabble in you lose the creativity with it and the potential for art. P.S. keeping you in my prayers Chris, please make a quick and speedy recovery 🙏❤🩹
I agree so much with Chris about not being able to replicate the feel of theater.
I went to see a theater performance of The Phantom of the Opera in NY 5 years ago.
It was incredible, I never understood what the difference was between theater and a movie until I experienced it.
It saddens me that so many may never have the same experience.
For the past 12 years I've been watching silent films and mostly films before the 1960s. Old books and periodicals are also high class.
Thank you.
It’s irrelevant to me. I no longer watch anything new. I’m back in the 70s right now and will be moving into the 60s at some point.
I've been watching silent movies and mostly 1930s and 40s movies.
@@magmasunburst9331 - I'm back watching Auguste and Louis Lumière these days.
Great seeing you again, Clifton! Tom Woods just made a nice comment about you at the SoHo Forum in New York last night.
If you're referring to Hollywood, Disney, et al, then yes, the traditional powerhouses have lost their way. Folks are tired of being preached to.
The entertainment industry from other sources within the US, and especially other parts of the world are doing just fine. In the past decade I'd say my consumption of movies and series from Europe, India, and Asia has increased 400%.
It helps that I lived half my life until 20 outside the US and don't mind subtitles, but even folks who've never stepped overseas are enjoying foreign media.
It generally has traditional values, isn't over sexualized, has main characters with good morals, etc. - Like American shows USED TO.
I don't want my expectations subverted, I want them catered to. Entertain me, don't lecture me.
I've noticed that East Asia in particular has been slaying it in terms of pop culture...music, manga, anime and movies in particular.
@@CliftonADuncan 20 years ago, the attitude was, “I love Japanese pop culture! It’s so weird!” Nowadays, it’s, “I love Japanese pop culture! It’s so normal!”
I am finding the "resistance to romance" in a lot of my young musical theater actor students. They are repulsed by it, perhaps because it plays into political ideas about gender, and roles. The entirely of musical theater is marinated in ROMANCE. How can you hate the foundation of the genre itself???
Male attraction to women is abuse, female attraction to men is weakness.
Traits that make men attractive to women are toxic; traits that make women attractive to men are patriarchy.
Heterosexuality is privilege, and is therefore "problematic."
They can't get this right, because love and sex are inherently un-PC..
It's quite scary tbh. Modern people are afraid of normal, deep human relationships and feelings.
Art in all its forms is the greatest gift man ever gave itself, music, theater, movies comedy, sculpture, painting have all been destroyed by computers and a horrendous ideology
**edit: I left out corporations
Thank you for doing this Clifton.
It might be fun if Chris Gore is up for it to have a reoccurring segment on your podcast where you discuss the state of the industry.
Chris is a good dude that has his pulse the movie industry.
Best wishes to Chris for a full and speedy recovery.
The same future as the music industry
I’m beginning my film adventure at 50 yrs old after spending the best of my career in software. I too am a college dropout. My first screenplay film fest run won 3 times for Dark Drama which I plan to produce and self fund.
Fantastic. Congratulations!
Duncan, I would watch this channel just to hear your voice. It is a genuine pleasure to listen to someone speak well. Empathy. "Love thy neighbor as thyself." And the wrong answer is "Who is my neighbor." The right answer is anyone, including someone who isn't like you. We've created a generation of automatons that have no empathy for people who aren't like them.
What an incendiary conversation. Holy smokes. Great work!
Oh my goodness, that was such a stellar interview. Thank you. I am so glad I found your channel.
This is the time for parallel economy to bloom; video games, movies, books, and comic. The major corporation have destroyed themselves with woke agenda; too inflexible to change.
Great interview as always. Really like listening to Chris and you’re a great interviewer! Hope he recovers quickly
Covid changed habits incredibly. We were forced to do things alone and away from the crowd and it helped put the nails in the coffin of the movies.
Fantastic interview, guys. You are both spot on. Sending love and prayers for Chris' recovery.
Holy hell, this is the best podcast I've heard in years. Subscribed.
For what it's worth, I also think Wesley Snipes deserves his due. I've always gone on about how versatile he was/is
Watched and subscribed 👍
You Are A classy Man !!!
Prayers up for a speedy recovery for Chris Gore!!
Love Chris.
The days of actors/actresses pulling $30 Million a film are OVER.
you already see celebs selling their belongings on auction sites.

I think the film that hit the zeitgeist of our times is "Joker". The fact that that movie made over a billion dollars is really reveling to me. Our world is getting closer to that world every day.
Joker was a film about mental health. Showing the public a side of our society we don’t often think about. We’re not heading towards the chaos depicted in the film, quite the opposite. The future is one of abundance 🎉
@@Known-unknowns just so we are clear. That's your opinion. It sounded a bit like you think it's fact. We might be headed for an abundant future, but that's not what is happening now I think it's going to get way worse before it gets better.
Ohhh ... I'm looking forward to listening to this! Appreciate both of you guys so much.
Good Episode!
Great conversation, thanks to you both.
Always enjoy your show! love from the Netherlands
Awesome! Thank you!
Dee was awesome on what's happening⚡
I'm glad the economic/class issue as it pertains to the industry is being talked about, here. When it comes to the importance of playing to a broader public in entertainment, there is a fantastic episode of Malcolm Gladwell's Revisionist History called "When Will Met Grace" about how the show Will and Grace may have actually been important to passing gay marriage - yet that is a show that made decisions which would be considered unacceptable today in order to make the gay characters more relatable to a conservative public. I'm not a fan of that era of TV, but I do wonder how minds are being changed or empathy built when the audiences are so niched down.
Remember, in the pre-woke era, gay men collectively registered their displeasure at being stereotyped as the quippy, quick-witted best friend? There was an awareness that relatable characters- no matter their "immutable characteristics"- are portrayed as having their own failures and foibles, otherwise known as being human.
As for the portrayals on Will & Grace, the first step of a normalization cycle involves throwing something into the air, even if it’s in a way that is sure to invite criticism. Hollywood Madame Heidi Fleiss boasted that she popularized marital infidelity, even as she was savaged by the media of the time, and was a punchline for talk show hosts for years.
Hope Chris has a speedy recovery and returns to his family healthy and safe!
Clifton, watching your podcast is a breath of fresh air, this was my first watch and I'm excited to watch more.
Thank you! And welcome aboard!
A great interview with an interesting guy!
Yeah... movies and theater needs to start catering to things large groups of people will like, as long as they keep producing things only a few people will like, only a few people will pay for it... it's not that complicated... yet those industries insist telling "my" story is more important than telling an entertaining story in a non-cringy way.
INDEPENDENT FILMMAKERS!!!!!!! THAT'S THE FUTURE BOYS AND GIRLS...PUT THAT DRUG AWAY....YOUR PHONE.
I am so thrilled you are still moving forward with your Sowell theatre show. If it's close to the DC area, you will have at least me in the audience!
When I got out of high school I didn't know what I wanted to do. I worked for a regional theater. I kept thinking everything I saw backstage, in auditions, rehearsals, etc.... was a normal job with HR the complaints would be off the hook. It was a different world. Hearing Chris say the spike in HR complaints from this generation this isn't surprising.
Wow. This was an amazing listen. Thank you to both of you..I'm now subscribed and will follow up on the other platforms as well
Brilliant discussion gentlemen.
Great stream as usual brother; good to see Chris is on the mend too.
We all need entertainment to escape and deal with reality sometimes and releaee stress, but i feel we have to many things to occupy our minds its becoming bad for the body. Its so addictive. Its too good at manipulating dopamine that just normal things end up seeming depressing by comparison. If there wasnt something fun to do around every corner any time of the day i might actually be in a better place in my life. Too much distractions. Never enough time to sit around wondering what to do and too much time trying to pry myself away from things i love doing trying to think about what i should be doing instead.
Good one guys - quality conversation. You just don't get these in the 'mainstream' space anymore. 👍
Chris Gore!!!!
Keep it up with your great work. Cheers from Italy!
I have seen your name pop up on Twitter and have been interested in your takes on the current culture and the entertainment industry. I didn't know you had a UA-cam channel but it randomly popped up in my suggested videos. Wow, what an amazing voice and a wonderful ability to conduct an engaging interview! Subscribed and looking forward to future podcasts, keep up the great work!
12:17 dingdingding! Nailed it. For over 4 yrs Hollywood didn't put out a movie or show that wasn't absolutely saturated with their obvious political bias. Alienating over half their audience at a time where the audience had more options than EVER BEFORE. Then covid hits & we get a real peak into celebrities private lives & it holy sht was it repugnant. These people couldn't be more non relatable to your average working class person. Instead of correcting course they doubled down on everything. They have lost over half of their core audience PERMANENTLY in a matter of a few yrs. Sad part is they'll never admit it was their own doing. They'll blame streaming, or something else that absolves them of any self reflection.
Wishing Gore a speedy recovery. This happened in the mid-60s when Hollywood Studios was going through layoffs and bad films, and tv became a big deal. Plus, the younger movie goers loved foreign and indie films more, and then the Indie boom began, and new executives took over, and the new Hollywood began. Its very simple if you make a good story people will come.
Chris always leads me to good stuff!!
God speed Chris and Clifton is Steve McQueen levels of cool.
THEY? Chris? Just call them JUICE!
I'm a subscriber, but strangely I didn't get a notification for this new episode!
Clifton, love the podcast. Keep up the great work!
Hello, Mr. Duncan.
Be advised that you might be getting throttled. I have you subscribed and set for full notification and I haven't been getting those notifications which is a shame; Your channel is one of my absolute favorites.
Love both of you guys
Bros.
Kudos to you both!!
So glad to hear you talking about this. The idea that Barbie should get an Oscar is just preposterous. I only recently recovered from my brief viewing of "The Abomination of Beanie's Fanny". I hope she and others like her think Broadway is stupid now so a similar horror doesn't further desecrate The Great White Way. Same feeling towards movies. I recently read a short piece about icons Scorsese and Deniro. Blue collar barely middle class upbringing. Streisand the same. I'm throwing Babs in because of Hello Dolly! which flopped as you mentioned. Also Beanie. 😂
I love watching movies alone but it's too expensive, now. I could justify it when I was younger, 6$ large popcorn and a 3$ drink-5$ ticket. Now it's about 30$ and AMC doesn't even put salt on their popcorn 25$ bucket lol.
Chris is Back! Get well soon! we cant lose you.
The lines were blurred. Now people get informed through entertainment figures, get entertainment from news figures.... Dopamine now comes from several sources, the important is to have their opinions validated
There’s a meme I remember from years ago, that just seems truer day by day. “The news used to tell you what happened, and you would decide how to feel about it. Now the news tells you how to feel about it, and you have to decide if it happened.”
Entertainment is more than ready for writers who have lived actual lives, rich with a variety of experiences. Worked blue collar jobs, served in the military, have been in war, have met and can relate to a wide variety of people, etc. Writers who come straight from graduating with a grievance studies degree and have only ever work and live in the LA bubble will continue to serve up drek.
It's no wonder so much of today's entertainment is awkward and self-conscious. Chris is absolutely correct in pointing out how entertainment has been 'credentialized.' Formerly, people learned on the job, they learned the principles of story telling first hand. Now it's all academic. You have to pass through the great homogenizer of our educational establishments. As a result, since not everyone can afford to attend, entertainment increasingly reflects the views and biases of a thin slice of society: those with the resources to get a degree.
Praying for a swift recovery for Chris who just had a stroke.
1:16 serendipity I've been thinking about the subject and boom it pops up here.
It's like a invisible tsunami society, cultures, entertainment... Etc
Shout out for 227! My man!
