Asking Questions - Level 3 - Experimental Questions
In this video Paul Andersen shows you how to asking questions in a mini-lesson on experimental questions. Two examples are included in the video and two additional examples are included in the linked thinking slides.
TERMS
Evidence - anything presented to support a claim
Experimental Question - a question that guides a testable scientific experiment
Hypothesis - a proposed explanation based on evidence
Observation - a statement about something you notice
Question - a sentence that asks for information
Scientific principles - fundamental concepts that explain natural phenomenon
Variable - a factor that can be changed, controlled or measured
- Independent Variable - the manipulated variable in an experiment (cause)
- Dependent Variable - the responding variable in an experiment (effect)
This progression is based on the Science and Engineering Practices elements from the NRC document A Framework for K-12 Science Education. “Ask questions that can be investigated within the scope of the classroom, outdoor environment, and museums and other public facilities with available resources and, when appropriate, frame a hypothesis based on observations and scientific principles.”
