And Charlotte Rampling plays it brilliantly. The way she almost humorously goes sideways and says, "Abomination!," had people laughing in the theater I watched the film in. lol And I didn't realize till later that her talking so soon after Paul "uses the voice" on her means it didn't work on her? Or did enough time elapse between Paul's admonition and her "abomination" response about it mean that it did work? Denis, what's the scoop? lol
@@sieraclayton1503 Yea, absolutely. I think she was affected, she did shut up without finishing her sentence. It was short-term though, probably she could recover more quickly.

Well, Florence is a good actress, but her voice is not very pleasant, though striking. Apparently something unfortunate happened in her childhood to give her a raspy voice. It actually does sound like something is wrong. I don't really enjoy listening to her, because it sounds painful But, again, her acting is good and she's funny. I do wish someone close to her would tell her to take that thing out of her nose, though.
But it's so interesting and hilarious to think that Denis Villeneuve, modern-day voice of Dune, studies the book in his spare time to correct his writing and directing, creator of something truly immersive, told his actors, for the little things, "do sci-fi sh*t."

Denis has written convincing love stories before, Arrival and Blade Runner come to mind. this movie, as in almost all aspects of his craft, is the shining example.
Villenueve understanding that Paul's story is a love story is so pivotal here. [Massive spoilers for Dune Messiah and Children of Dune] Paul rejects the golden path because it brings suffering to Chani. In the end, it was always about Chani. Why else would the first book end with "history will call us wives?"
He had something of a benefit of hindsight. Because Dune (the first novel, as a standalone) was absolutely not a love story. For sure, true human love played a big part, but actually on page it was totally sidelined or a background thing. It wasn't until Messiah that it took any immediate plot impact, and even then it was far more of a "stated" rather than shown element of the story. By which I mean Paul+Chani was an extremely shallow romance as depicted in the novels, there was no effort to portray a true love or justify it or convince the audience of it outside of Paul's final choice in Messiah. With that finale in mind, Villeneuve made the correct decision, and carried it out amazingly, to actually establish their romance as a real thing on the movie screen. Outside of the technical aspects, this is by far the most impressive/incredible achievement of the movie
@@misanthropicservitorofmars2116 Love is also their greatest strength. Paul replaces the emperor, becoming emperor himself because his demeanor and sincerity earned him the love of Chani and Stilgar, who helped him survive - and then thrive - in the desert.
