I'd LOVE TO KNOW what you thought, since I did get pretty controversial towards the end of the video (but hey, no controversy no fun) If you use twitter, make sure to follow me twitter.com/marcdjiang I reply to every single tweet! Thanks --- Marc
Bro I knew it, since the first video that I've watched from you I knew that you'll be on the line of the Korzembas, Dom2ks, Jmxhighrollers, and SDCS. I know I sound too dramatic, but your contents are just so lit, and I'm just proud to say that I've been here before 3k subs. Keep up the good work.
This video is amazing. Completely enhanced the way I view the usage rate stat which is becoming very popular due to the new analytics phase in the NBA. More people need to see this, great video man, can't wait for episode two!
jms209 Both are data miners all they say is history, history. WTF don't they know there is a first time to everything. Humans did not exist for the most of history, therefore, statistically speaking, history tells us that humans should not exist now.
What I love about you is that you dont just look at stats from an outsider point, you look at stats and what does it mean for others on the court. Big W.
Hey Mark, I think that you are one of the greatest youtubers and you actually know what you are talking about. Unlike most basketball youtubers. Please keep making more videos like this. I really like how you use statistics to determine what you are talking about, and not just random warriors bandwagon shit.
For shzzle Mah nzzle even crazier that bill Russell won MVP the same season the big O averaged a triple double and Wilt averaged over 50 points and 20 rebound
Great video man but I wouldn’t agree entirely, if you look solely at playoff usage rates, one player has had a usage rate of over 38% and won a championship. That player being Michael Jordan in the 1993 playoffs. In fact he’s had a usage rate above 35% in 4 of his 6 championships. Only one other player has come close to those numbers and won a championship, that being Hakeem in the 1995 playoffs with a usage rate of 35%. The craziest thing is Michael Jordan’s 1993 playoff usage rate is the 5th highest of all time and the 3 players (Westbrook twice) above him all exited in the first round. So I think you’re completely right in saying that a team can’t win it all with one player. Unless you have a player like Michael Jordan, he gives you a pretty good chance 😏. For those wondering Lebron (2012) and Kobe (2009 and 2010) have the next highest usage rates at 33% in a championship season. Surprisingly the same % as MJs lowest usage rate championship seasons 🐐.
Doorman while having one of the youngest rosters, it also had one of the most incompetent ones. Westbrook is the only reason that the thunder even scratched the playoffs and that's why he won MVP. Because he was the MOST VALUABLE. take him away and the thunder are nothing, and the young talent will be put into a situation where they have to lead a team, and they for sure don't know how to do that.
Crab Goswami I dont you think you understand what im arguing. Personally i think Harden should've won cos he was putting up similar stats but his team won 8 more games, but idc anymore about that Westbrook also deserved it. What i dont like is that Westbrook and the Thunder organisation basically ran their offence to get Russ the MVP rather than to develop their core and plan for the future e.g. Adams and Kanter would box out for Russ to get uncontested rebounds (which he led league with 8.5 out of his total 10.7... like wtf need i say more) - stats.nba.com/players/rebounding/#!?sort=REB_UNCONTEST&dir=1 - or when he would play garbage time in games just to record a triple double. They talk about the Warriors harming the league with superteam formations and abusing the 3pt line, but at least theyre trying to win. IMO Russ is doing more harm to the league cos he's just setting a precedence as to who is worthy of an MVP. I wouldnt be surprised now to see down the line some fuckwit egotistic talented NBA player winning MVP one year by putting up retarded stats but his team not making playoffs. Again my opinion, thats not what i wanna see.
This is probably one of the best videos you have right now, MDJ! So intelligent and well-researched. I usually hate numbers but this one hits it well. Keep up the good work! i agree 100%! P.S. Still contending Harden for MVP
Correlation does not equal causation. You're saying usage rate leads to losing, but the entire reason these 3 had high usage rates was because without it, the team would lose even more. If Kobe lowered his usage rate, who would make up for those possessions? Smush Parker?
Best comment by far. I totally disagree with his conclusion that a high usage rate is generally bad because he doesn't take the alternatives into consideration. That's sumply an illogical argument. If you have an excellent scorer with a high field goal percentage in a very bad team, why would it be bad if he had a high usage rate? That's simply the best alternative. In some cases like with Westbrook it's not the best alternative because he had high potential around him, but you can't just assume that for every case. So it's case dependent whether a high usage rate is good or bad.
well i mean since since your basically stuck with the teamates you have (more or less) let those players have a higher usage . because your star player isnt going to improve much but your trash teamates will improve at a rapid rate. so yes let smush parker make up for those possessions. kobe had it backwards when he frustratingly said "wtf am i supposed to do pass the ball to smush parker and cris mihm?" yes! you should kobe!
Great vid. My one qualm is that by Russel Westbrooks accounts Westbrook never "chased triple doubles". The story line over and over again in post game interviews was that his single concern was the "w" and his triple doubles were a byproduct of his and OKC's play style. At times he seemed unaware that he got a triple double and even lamented the media obsession with the statistic. Although it's possible Westbrook and OKC might have understated RWs commitment to the triple double there is nothing (besides results) that suggest the organization was more commited to RW achieving triple doubles than the team succeeding. That being said this video provides great insight into why it might be a better strategy to have RW take less shots. Also, you show a correlation (although you could have used a much larger sample size) but not a causation. Maybe MJ, Kobe, and RWs Usage Rate was so high because there teams were bad, not the other way around. It would be interesting to explore the relationship between offensive metrics of team mates and the "franchise players" usage rate. A PGs job description includes facilitating for their team mates and making them better. In fact you could argue this falls under the job description of every position on an elite team (see GSW). This is where LBJ famously excels. Maybe RW could do a better job. It is a team sport after all.
Great video man totally and i believe that was one of the main reasons why KD left westbrook. but love how you go in detail with your vids and keep it up👌👍
Great channel and analysis. I think the 2001 Sixers are a good example of how this style of basketball can take you really, really far, but at the end of the day, can't quite win you the chip. Granted, that 2001 squad mighta had the chops to beat any other team as those Lakers were pretty unbeatable. But they kinda showcased how it just falls short of being a complete enough package to win it all.
thank , thank , thank you i always try to xplein that you did a great job !!!!!!!!!!! that is why james is the best plyer in the world he cares about his teamates !!!!!
Nice job! Totally agree about RW. And I agree about assists in usage%, it pisses me too. They should add assists to the formula at least as + 0.4 AST / Tm AST and secondary assists somehow too.
preach brother. westbrook and kobe think "my teamates are trash so i should try to do everything myself " (even though they will still fall short of a chip). but if they give their teamates an opportunity to improve the team will get better instead of stay the same or even worse as mdj suggests!
That's why I've always thought Bird was underrated by many. His best usage rate years are nowhere near that of a Kobe, MJ, LBJ, or RW and yet he still went 28/10/7 on 50/40/90 splits during his Prime.
great video, super informative and super fun. I do think you can get a little caught up and overstate things - Westbrook did not choose MVP over a ring, for example. he didn't have a chance to contend this year as you said yourself. and also, there are more components to this than you show, while I agree with most of it. there are emotional aspects, and competitive aspects that make those players who they are, and you can't separate what makes them superior athletes overall from what makes them a bad teammates in the course of a single possession. keep doing your thing. you are very good at it.
Great video! This one was really fun to watch. It's also worth mentioning that the only 2 teams that actually contended whilst having a top 15 highest usage rate players where the 2000- 2001 Sixers, with #10 Iverson, And 2011 - 12 Lakers, who had #12 kobe. Of those 2, I think it is safe to say that the main reason AI made the finals was because dikemebe mutombo doesn't need the ball to defend, So AI could do his thing. However, this coildnt continue the nect few seasons, since the tean was more rounded, and no one got anything done cuz ai had the ball. And there are the 2011 12 lakers, who kinda failed in the playoffs, But we're said to contend in the main season. However, when you get to the playoffs, you out your best stars out there, And andrew Bynum, pay gasol, matt barnes, and ron artest are simply not going to be able to do anything if kobe has 35 percent usage. Same reason the superteam they built the following year failed. Hmm. Why and how superteams didn't work would be an interesting topic.
Also I have to put out there that Westbrook's teammates were MAGNITUDES better defensively than Harden's. Westbrook didn't play defense at all but they were still a great defensive team in terms of rating last year.
Ledgnr197gaming the rockets were a decently defensive team tho. Especially in the playoffs where they cranked up their defense too top 7. At one point they were top 5. OKC is that much better it's just they got a lot of big guys who protect the paint. The rockets have more perimeter defenders rather than paint ones.
B Er you either dont know what your talking about or lying to prove a point dantoni doesn't care AT ALL about defense his motto is why play defense if you can outscore them anyway
Also, by being MVP, Westbrook's value increases to other free agents/stars. I.E. Paul George who only wanted to play in LA is now content with playing with a triple double averaging MVP caliber beast because he might be able to make it to the conference finals
You are right about high usage causing a team to not be successful, but I think Westbrook and Scott Brooks didn't realize that. They thought they were doing everything they could to win, even though it wasn't the right choice.
I agree with what you are saying but they weren't winning by letting Westbrook do less, however, the fans would rather see their player chase an MVP award so they at least got something out of this season and it also keeps Westbrook happy and makes him favour stopping around in Oklahoma city
as an okc fan, i agree with most of what you said given this, i think the management didnt really have much of a choice but to do that that year. they had a team built around durant and westbrook and yes durant didnt resign with the thunder so this is what happened lol
The problem is though, that this is just the way Westbrook plays. Even with Durant next to him, he couldn't putting himself over the team. His style of play doesn't contribute to winning basketball. And if you disagree, might I ask you why it is that Westbrook was never able to win a championship or even make the finals a second time when he had elite offensive options including the second best player in the world next to him?
It baffles me that Adams is not more involved in the OKC offense. Dude has the strength, touch and the level headedness to dominate inside. I wish they played more through him, but OKC works in mysterious ways.
Kobe and MJ had much worse teams than the team WestBrick had last season yet they still were more efficient than him and they had no other choice to do.. Especially the team that Kobe had in 2006 which in my opinion without Kobe's great performances that year wouldn't have even won more than 10 games .. I remember how painfully hard it was watching scrubs like Smush Parker and Kwameeeeeeh Brown waste position after position on offense and not showing anything on defense. Coming to last years OKC they had Oladipo who is now showing to everyone what type of a player he really is, They had Steven Adams and they had a very efficient scorer in Enes Kanter so you can't say that WestBrick didn't have that much help last year
I'd LOVE TO KNOW what you thought, since I did get pretty controversial towards the end of the video (but hey, no controversy no fun) If you use twitter, make sure to follow me twitter.com/marcdjiang I reply to every single tweet! Thanks

Westbrook minus well have went for the MVP cuz there was no way he was gonna come close to win a championship
Minus well?
JoeyP might at well lol my bad
Doorman while having one of the youngest rosters, it also had one of the most incompetent ones. Westbrook is the only reason that the thunder even scratched the playoffs and that's why he won MVP. Crab Goswami they would have made the playoffs without Westbrook! They had a very good deep roster! He was the least valuable player in the League!
Crab Goswami

And if you disagree, might I ask you why it is that Westbrook was never able to win a championship or even make the finals a second time when he had elite offensive options including the second best player in the world next to him?
Been saying this for years. Cheers
It baffles me that Adams is not more involved in the OKC offense. Dude has the strength, touch and the level headedness to dominate inside. I wish they played more through him, but OKC works in mysterious ways.
Bro how is your channel not bigger?
History reapeats
