Exactly same situation here! Love watching his videos and suffered finding other good quality channels managing tall fescue. I'm really excited about this mistake!
When I heard Tall Fescue I literally said "oh my god" out loud. My wife was like "what happened?" I said Ryan Knorr just accidentally planted about 20 LBs of tall fescue into his lawn. She said "NOOOO"😬😬
Could be worse, I forgot I didn’t have trimec(for dallis grass) in my sprayer I actually had round up quick pro in it and started spraying my yard, it wasn’t till I started making a extra pass over some of the more infected area. Now a little over 700sqft is dead. Thank god we are plugging mine any day now
That's only 5,000,000 seeds. Think of how good you'll be with chopsticks when you're done. You'll be able to pick no-see-ums out of the air. Great new video!
Greetings. Thanks to the fact that UA-cam began to translate subtitles, I began to understand what the videos were about. I really admire your hard work and perseverance. I planted the lawn in 2014 and made a lot of mistakes too. Very grateful for the information. Good luck! (Google translator)
Thanks for putting this vid up, Ryan. There’s solace in knowing that even pro’s like you can have missteps. Your entire community learned the same valuable lesson that you did, we’re all better for it - Cheers!! 👍🏼
I have to say I started getting into lawn care this year but was totally uneducated. I tried planting tall fescue in spring and it all died in the heat of the summer. Then I found your channel. I started watching everything about fall renovations and literally followed your overseeding fall program step by step to the letter. It's been nearly 3 weeks since then and I have an amazing full tall fescue back yard and am very much looking forward to seeing what you have to say about tall fescue so though I am sure it sucks having this happen, many like myself will benefit. Thanks for all your videos you have transformed my lawn!
I just ordered one of these 44” spreaders. I am VERY excited as it is my first big step into upping my lawn game with a tool like this. I have a brand new house and horrible soil. I intend to use this spreader to put top dressing on all 20,000 square feet of yard to help the new grass have what it needs to start growing before winter.
I’ve got tall fescue in our front yard, sissy grass out back, and couch on the berm. The tall fescue is the nicest. It tolerates our warmer weather and lack of rain over the warmer months. (We have in-ground irrigation) Watching all the way from nz
I'm actually glad for your "mistake". I want a mainly tall fescue lawn but your channel is my go to for information. I am excited to see what you do with your backyard now.
Ryan I saw the dogs in the video and now in the video you show us the dog potty area... I saved my lawn from dog pee spots... I added 150 SQFT of K9 turf to a a dog “run” off the service door of my garage. +95% of dog waste in my yard goes into the K9 turf not my living lawn. Sure I have a spot her or there from in the yard play time but I have restricted my two dogs access when still allowing them unleashed time. It is the best investment I made to my home in the two years I have owned it ($3,000 fully installed). No muddy paws in the Spring, easy clean up and with K9 turf and the Professional prep during install there is no smell. Rain “flushes” the turf and the dog run. If no rain I just hit it with the hose in the Summer.
I just planted some of Pete's TTTF a week ago. Just starting to see some germination in the shadier spots where the soil doesn't dry out as fast. My schedule doesn't allow me to water 2-3 times per day except on weekends so we'll see how my first overseed pans out in the next few weeks. But, am glad you might have some TTTF tips down road. Love the content!
I started better lawn management this year. I only recently found Ryan's videos, given me some good ideas. Aerated in the spring, dethatch and overseed a few weeks ago. Been watering and it has recovered nicely. Think i have almost every grass type for the midwest. Zoysia, bermuda, tall fescue and ryegrass. I haven't summed up what i have spent yet. Pro tip: Track your fertilizer applications in a spreadsheet. Next year will be lawn leveling, its pretty bumpy. Thanks Ryan.
Welcome to the blue/rye/fescue club! I’ve been throwing down this type of mix from hardware shop seed for years (just not the high quality), now I can follow a lawn program suited for my grasses.
For loading my peat moss spreader this what I do. I have a cheap plastic tarp that put down close to where I am working and will open 3 to 4 bags of peat moss on it and break it up on the tarp. I found just stomping on it works best and fastest. I then use a shovel and 5 gallon buckets. Goes super quick and the tarp makes clean up a breeze and keeps it out of the landscape.
I planted Black Beauty Ultra last year which is primarily tall fescue. It looks pretty dang good and this summer appeared to have more tolerance to the summer heat than what I had in there before. I just recently replanted another area with the same seed and its coming through strong.
I started crying uncontrollably when I saw what happened to you. All of my lawn frustrations were triggered due to this video. I understand how deeply this hurt you. I have had so many issues with my centipede grass that I just don’t know what to do anymore.
I did a renovation using the SS1000 tall fescue blend from Seed Superstore about 3 weeks ago, so i cant wait to follow along. May not be what you wanted but I have many if those varietys and they look great!!
I hope you come to enjoy the TTTF as much as I do. I am actually going to seed an area with KBG only and mix some Blue Heat in my main front fescue yard. Fingers crossed.
@@trevormuggeridge4560 Good Monday morning to you sir. Nice day here. Sunny and 17 Celsius. My over seeding is doing well. Have you been getting any rain by you :)
Striperman, could get a storm today ,but could have destructive winds ,large hail and heavy rain. Probably get nothing but then again this is 2020 and anything is possible. 😳
I just became a subscriber and started my own lawn renovation process. Even tho I’m sad about ur lawn, it still motivates the heck outta me to learn from you. It’s cool to see u think and problem solve
My first time planting fescue, first thing I noticed is the germination time is about 2wks slower than my ryegrass, but the biggest change is the way it's popped up. Seems like fescue comes up with two blades, or one blade with a second blade coming off of it. Rye is just one single blade. Anyway, can't wait. Welcome to the neapolitan of cool season grass homeowners
I just had to reseed a big area that grubs destroyed this summer on my lawn, sprayed to kill them, I had the core aeration done last week. Finally got the seed down today. Used the KBG blend from Super Seed Store, used about 8 bags of Scott’s lawn soil to level out some low spots, seeded then covered with peat moss. Hoping the next 2 weeks stay warm enough here in Chicagoland.
I live in the north metro in the twin cities. I use Lowes Sta-Green the green bag. June 1st, August 1st, and winterizer October 1st. It’s got iron for the dark green. I don’t bag. I mulch leaves and grass. I pick up twigs. Mow high, and keep blades sharp.
Ouch, that must have been a shock. Here I was feeling stressed that I got too little PRG for overseeding this fall (10lbs bag for 2647m2 of lawn) and I've waited so late. Sometimes we just have to live with what we got.
So the best way I have found to load the peat moss spreader is to actually take the bags and cut them wide open and dump them in a wheel barrow or wagon and break them up really quick with a large screw driver. Open up the door on the spreader and dump it in, yes, you handle it twice but I found it to be very efficient. If you have a helper busting the bags and dumping them in the wagon you will be so much quicker.
Bulletproof? 😂 Don't get me wrong, I love fescue. I even have Pete's TTTF in my lawn, but bulletproof is the last adjective I'd use for fescue. Now, common bermuda... that sh** is bulletproof.
In southern virginia fescue goes dormant in the summer like Bermuda goes dormant in the winter. Most people just overseed their Bermuda lawns with fescue for a green lawn year round.
Mistakes were made on my end too. I double pass core aerated and cut low beforehand like 2.5in but didn’t not have time to dethatch so the canopy wasn’t very opened up like last year especially on dead spots. Weaseled a those spots but they were still kind of thatchy. I was low on time. Planted sept 12th at the beginning of a 14 day drought. 🤦🏻♂️
Cant wait to see how it turns out! Thinking about planting some tall fescue(on purpose) on my new-to-me lawn! Love your channel. Great source of knowledge and information.
Haha nooooo dude. I agree, just go with it, I am very interested to see the look/feel. Plus what issues crop up. Plus, maaaaybe you like it? Just saying.
I like your attitude towards the situation. Just gotta lean into it and take it as it comes. You may like the TTTF. The only annoying thing will be having to change your deck height from the front and back. TTTF prefers 3.5 - 4 inches mow height. Excited to see how it all turns out. 👍
I just finished doing a renovation on my yard, after 10yards of soil and 100 pounds of TTTF over half an acre it will be interesting to compare results.
I have st Augustine grass in Florida and very little of your content is relavet to me. Yet every video you put out I find myself fully enthralled and fully entertained. Keep it up bro ,can't wait to see the new house and long videos.
I feel your pain, but this actually works perfect for me. I get all my lawn care advice from you and I am 3 weeks into establishing my own elite TTTF lawn. Welcome to the club!
Ryan maybe you could do a video on how much it costs to do one of your renovations. So we the viewers could decide and plan if this is what we could do on our own property.
Thanks! I just ordered 25lbs of the rye grass from your link! I’m all kbg here in the west burbs of Chicago and I had fungus issues too. Putting down propoconazole today and hopefully the seed gets here fast so I can get that down. Aerating and fertilizing already done!
Dang, wish this video would've came out a few weeks ago. I would've tried the TTTF myself. I went with JG BBU this time but I think in a few years I may do a full renovation anyways.. it'll be interesting to see how this turns out!
So happy for you. Trick with fescue is water less and a strong fungicide program in the summer. Hope you didn't get it too thick with all that seed you put down.
"It happens" But now we will see a Tall Fescue series coming next year. My wife and kids thought I was crazy a couple weeks ago going outside at night to look at the germination with my flashlight. See? Ryan does it too! Good Luck with the Tall Fescue.
Once used me missus moisturizer for shave cream wondered why it didnt foam up after a tube. Sometimes we just have to deal with the outcomes. Cheers mate great stuff!
First season DIY here. For some reason, thought my yard was fescue. Over seeded the entire thing with Pete’s TTTF 4 weeks ago. Now I know my yard was KBG. Really nice fescue, but now I have streaks/patches of lighter grass here and there. Oh well. Love and learn I guess.
When you said I have two unmarked bags🙄. I knew what happened. I was thinking. Hurry! Drop the timemaster down a half inch more...bag it and see how much of it you get back up🤔. Nah, you did the right thing... Now you'll have 2 great types of grass to help us with👍 Good to see the selection of rye you use. I'll check them out. Still need to order seed. Thx for the update.
I just over seeded with Tall Fescue last Monday, but here in the New York City area its been very dry and no rain for the forseeable future. The seed I used was from my local Ewing Irrigation and Landscape supply store and it was Empro King tall fescue so we'll see how that works. No signs of germination yet but its only six days since I did the seeding. My mistake last fall was over-seeding with the Scotts "Contractors" blend which in the spring really popped but once summer stress hit it just died off no matter how well I watered this past summer. So, now I used this seed and hopefully it will give me solid results.
@@gordoeinstein good luck with the legal issues, a friend of mine had a similar issue with a neighbors construction project a few years back and its not fun what you have to go through. Yep, we're basically in the same region when it comes to the weather and our lawns, I just started taking care of the lawn in the Fall of 2018 after years of neglect and I know it takes a while for it to come back to what it was. Spring 2019 I didn't over-seed rather limed the lawn the applied pre-emergent and followed a regular fertilizer schedule plus grub control. Then last fall instead of going for better seed I went with the Scotts contractors blend and it gave me false hope, it germinated within 10 days of putting it down and started filling in and then this past spring it came in beautifully but it was fools gold. As you know this past summer was hot and humid and while I did water regularly the grass started withering away. But at the end of the day, you get what you pay for and the bag of contractors blend went for $44 to cover 5000 sq ft. The guy at Ewing Irrigation recommended I try the Tall Fescue for an overseed and filling in the bare spots so we will see how it works and hopefully there will be some good results. He also said something interesting, he said that when you are re-establishing the lawn to use starter when you fertilize until the lawn is established and then you can go into the milorganite and other similar products. Anyway, best of luck and thanks for the reply.
We live in St. Louis and have tall fescue. There’s not too many good fescue videos so looking forward to your eduction and progress. Been following you over the summer and inspired to do fall tenacity, aeration, over seeding.
I just made the same mistake this spring. I put lawn patch seed with tall fescue instead of my kbg. I had to kill the lawn and start over. It is just now coming up. So you are not the only one.
Honestly kinda looking forward to seeing how the fescue turns out. Plus you're advice on how to take care of it will be valuable for this of us in the middle of the country.
I just seeded an area around a tree in my front lawn with perennial ryegrass, kbg, and tttf blend. The rye grass came up first and looks really nice and green. It filled in much better than what i thought it would here in st Charles MO. The spot I seeded was from weed infestation and i killed them and it left that spot bare. Looks much better
In Florida we put our prized cars in the garage and keep them out of the sun and elements. We back our pickups in grill forward at night like guard dogs on the driveways. Conner did that to your lawn by the way!
Great video Ryan! I’m glad to k ow you are human and make mistakes like me :) I did a overseed but I neglected peat moss spreading I worry about my old grass if it’ll push through. First mow in 21 days happening Wednesday thank you for all the great tips!
Remember that video you did where you were behind the fence line pointing out a clump of green fescue surrounded by dormant kbg. You'll have less issues next summer. Besides, you can always overseed with kbg. The timemaster will have it's work cut out next season. Btw, I about lost it when you brought out the shop vac :0
Best thing I did was replace my KBG with TTTF. Way more drought tolerant, bug resistant, deeper rooter. My lawn is always the greenest on my street in the heat of the summer. Get rid of that KBG and go with TTTF. You’ll love it!
I have a patch that I'm trying tttf in. Had a few bags of cool blue and only need a few pounds for my area. Well I sold one and put the other 4 out before I realized I didn't keep any for myself 🤦♂️
Awesome! I just did that to my front yard on purpose. I look forward to your videos of the backyard. I watch your channel anyways, but now we have even more in common. LOL.
Boy l know that feeling but it happens to all of us in time. Hopefully ur lawn will turn out very good. Love that green roller got to get one of those. Thanks
Hey! Why didn’t you use the power spreader for the peat moss too? ... I’ve had a very interesting season as well! Just purchase a new house and totally renovated the 19,000 sq/ft. Two rain storms. Hard time maintaining proper soil moister. Water timer system at one point. Sprinkler head came out pouring probably 3x too much water for a day. I feel your pain, brother.
Hey Ryan, the same thing happened to me, I put down mignonette late July. Grass had gone dormant and we were in the middle of a drought.had to reseed in September. Will keep you posted
Oh man, if it makes you feel any better Ryan, I over applied Aluminum Sulfate to my backyard Midnight KBG and nuked most of the roots. It peels up like carpet now. 👏🏻
I bought a house with mostly KBG. I filled in some significant sections with K31 Tall Fescue. Huge mistake. I've got two completely different tones of green. learned a lot tho from seeing how the different grasstypes have handled the year. Made me a smarter homeowner.
Yay!!! Now Ryan has TTTF, and will have good info for all of us Transition Zone guys. Can’t wait. Subbed! Don’t worry about the mix of KGB. Lots of people in the transition zone mix in some KGB on purpose to get some self-repair capability. That’s the worst thing about TTTF. It won’t self-repair at all.
Greetings from England 🏴... I am in Kent. Which is known as the garden of England...I had beautiful lawn and made same mistake as you . My wife said don’t do it and I did . Lol 😂... learn from you mistakes. God bless you my son 👍
Hey Ryan, Another great video! Quick question, I haven't done any seeding yet because I'm not sure how I can cover my yard with a sprinkler system. I have 2 acres of cleared turf. Any recommendations on what product would provide that type of coverage would be most appreciated. Thanks!
I am looking forward to seeing how your yard turns out with fescue. I am just about to overseed with Jonathan Green sun/shad. It's a mix of fescue, bluegrass, and rye.
I run a Turf Farm here in NE. I can make any lawn into an immaculate cool/transitional sod field in 18 mo. Got to use some granular Azoxystrobin on KGB, and never use liquid Fe in the summer.
My learning progression before starting in on renovating my lawn: First Video: Hmm this seems doable Second: Can't be that difficult! I can't wait to get started!! Third: This guy's lawn looks awesome but this all seems really complicated! Fourth: I still have no idea how i'm gonna level my rollercoaster lawn. Fifth: Im confused Sixth: I have no idea how to do this. Seventh: I think I give up.
Sorry, but I’m actually glad to see some tall fescue content. I live in the transition zone (about 7hours south of you) where it’s hard to grow any grass. Plenty of UA-camrs reel cutting KBG or Alan and his thick Zoysia grass, but not much on Fescue. Which is all I can grow and be green for more than 4 months of the year. Still, no matter what I do I get a fungus in my fescue in early summer then heat damage at the end of summer. So maybe you’re content next summer can help me!
What is your take on a fungus or moss remover to use? I hand thatched 5000 square foot lawn but the moss and fungus remain. Any chemical advice on what to do next , thank you. RH DSD KING DIO

Ryan freaking out that he put the wrong seed down, meanwhile i'm over here just hoping I can get any of my seeds to take before it gets cold.
I have st Augustine grass in Florida and very little of your content is relavet to me. Yet every video you put out I find myself fully enthralled and fully entertained. Keep it up bro ,can't wait to see the new house and long videos.
Made mistakes? Jocko says “Good”. A new world of opportunity just opened up for you.
Ha ha ha!!! Extreme ownership baby!! 😂
@@thomascee Hooyah!
Finally finally finally you finally got tall fescue. We keep requesting you to grow some TTTF. We successed.
i was try to get away from the tall fescue, and watch his video for the blue grass. lol
I love the fact that we will finally get TTTF lawn tips from the best lawn You Tuber.
I feel your pain, but this actually works perfect for me. I get all my lawn care advice from you and I am 3 weeks into establishing my own elite TTTF lawn. Welcome to the club!
Thank you very much for the tip on the Landzie spreader. That saves so much back-breaking work and time.
Ryan Knorr....A man of the people (the tall fescue people). I'm torn between being bummed for you and excited to see what's possible for me!
As a transition zone person, I'm actually pretty excited to see the outcome of your fescue lawn.
So happy for you. Trick with fescue is water less and a strong fungicide program in the summer. Hope you didn't get it too thick with all that seed you put down.
I love my fescue lawn. You’ll love yours too, in a much different way than the low cut rye.
Now you'll have 2 great types of grass to help us with👍
Good to see the selection of rye you use.
I can imagine Connor laughing in your face and nearly chocking in his moustache.
I can’t wait to see tips on how you take care of tall fescue. Keep it going. Some mistakes happen for a reason. Run with it turn lemons to lemonade.
We live in St. Louis and have tall fescue. There’s not too many good fescue videos so looking forward to your eduction and progress. Been following you over the summer and inspired to do fall tenacity, aeration, over seeding.
Btw - went with winning colors seed. Has anyone used it?
I just made the same mistake this spring. I put lawn patch seed with tall fescue instead of my kbg. I had to kill the lawn and start over. It is just now coming up. So you are not the only one.
I gasped so loud my family came to check on me!! I can’t wait to see you turn these lemons into lemonade.
I have TTTF in my yard! So I am happy to see the progress you will have with your back yard.
Love my tall Fescue, I always have a mix of grasses in my lawn. 20% Pacific NW blends for my area and 80% Tall fescue.
I’m SO EXCITED!!! I just spread TF in my back yard. Yessss!! Let’s do this!!
GREAT video! Too much fun and, of course, real pro editing. As always, thanks for sharing! And I can't wait to see the adventures of Tall Fescue!
If you fancy a change I would love to see Humboldt chewings in your front yard I think it would look amazing
LOL.
lol I'm going all tall fescue starting this season. The summer heat is too much for other types where I am and need something more resilient.
Boy l know that feeling but it happens to all of us in time. Hopefully ur lawn will turn out very good. Love that green roller got to get one of those. Thanks
I love TTTF! stands up REALLY well to traffic and looks great with minimal effort! You're gonna love your happy little mistake!
Yeah k31 is not a tttf type
I just overseeded kbg/rye backyard with Jonathon Green TTTF. (On purpose) I am hoping this will blend okay? Please say yes!
@@kwveib Ive blended TTTF and if looks great with KBG. It was just the K31 that looked horrible.
Nice now we have the same seed. Can’t wait till next year so I can see how you take care of it.
My mouth hit the floor. Thats an insane story! Excited to see what's next
Greetings from England 🏴... I am in Kent. Which is known as the garden of England...I had beautiful lawn and made same mistake as you . My wife said don’t do it and I did . Lol 😂... learn from you mistakes. God bless you my son 👍
Ryan, with those elite cultivars you will be able to mow it pretty tight for TTTF. Possibly 1.5" or lower.
I've got tall fescue, so your mistake may be my blessing for future tips haha
Hey Ryan,
Another great video!
Looking forward to your rhizomatic tall fescue adventure. Looks like an awesome bag of fescue.
I run a Turf Farm here in NE. I can make any lawn into an immaculate cool/transitional sod field in 18 mo. Got to use some granular Azoxystrobin on KGB, and never use liquid Fe in the summer.
My learning progression before starting in on renovating my lawn:
First Video: Hmm this seems doable
Second: Can't be that difficult! I can't wait to get started!!
Third: This guy's lawn looks awesome but this all seems really complicated!
Fourth: I still have no idea how i'm gonna level my rollercoaster lawn.
Fifth: Im confused
Sixth: I have no idea how to do this.
Seventh: I think I give up.
GREETINGS SOLDIER, YOU'VE TURNED THIS VIDEO, INTO A THRILLER 😱
Bro you need a sun joe thatcher $130 one time and the little guy hits hard
