Thanks so much for this video! About a decade ago, I attended a fairly prominent film school and NO ONE had seen Menace 2 Society. If an urban film wasn't part of the curriculum, people just didn't watch them. So I could speak to people about 'Do The Right Thing', but that was it. No one had ever seen Boy N Tha Hood, Menace 2 Society, Juice, New Jack City, nothing....
I really appreciate your channel all the more.

What was their reaction and thoughts on these films?
@@chrisjfox8715 The only one that ended up being part of the curriculum was 'Do The Right Thing' and let me tell you, it upset A LOT of people. For whatever reason, no one ever found time to watch films with an 'urban' cast. Not surprising, but still upsetting and hurtful at the time. But you could find a handful of people watching Grandma's Boy at any given time.
Spot on review on the movie and PQ! Watched it yesterday for the first time and other than their pagers, it could have been a movie released in 2021! Great film and the transfer is near perfect. A!
Such a great transfer, glad I avoided it all these years till now
One of my favorite films of that era. Really captured the struggle of the economically challenged and how dire the consequences of ignoring the disparities present in society can have on all walks of life.

The only bummer is none of the music videos for the movie made it onto the special features (MC Eiht’s Streiht Up Menace, Spice 1’s Trigga Gots No Heart, Hi-Five’s Unconditional Love and Smooth’s You’ve Been Played)
But goddamn. The quality is absolutely killer!!
AND we get the 1995 laserdisc commentary!
How was the commentary? Haven't picked up Menace on 4K yet...

Commentary is great, Allen discusses the more character driven aspects of the film while Albert is on the technical end

This is coming out in the UK on blu-ray but not 4K which seems weird
I seen that movie in the theater when I was like 14 it's definitely a good movie but I think it is slight rip off of Boyz in the Hood . If you enjoyed the movie you also check out Dead Presidents.
With Criterion it's hit or miss. Criterion are known to screw up colors like BULL DURHAM, MIDNIGHT COWBOY. Your review tells me it's safe to buy this.

OK now here’s the bad part. There is a missing scene from this new 4K release. The scene when A-wax played by Mc Eiht tries to take money from the crackhead and then beat him up. That scene was only in the Directors cut. And yes This new release is the directors cut version so that scene should Not be missing. Hopefully they would do a replacement disc for this movie.

Would you consider it a key scene in the context of the rest of the director's cut? Not saying it shouldn't be there, just curious whether you just hate that it's missing out of principle...
