    2. Streaming companies not releasing physical editions
    3. Limited Runs that go OOP
    4. DVDs that haven't been upgraded to at least Blu Ray/Stuff never released (The Beach, The Village, etc)

The “death” of physical media is not from film fans like us switching from blu ray to streaming, it’s from casual consumers who used to buy random DVDs from Walmart for their kids to watch and now just flip on a streaming service. I’ll be here to the bitter end, which I hope never happens…

By far the most annoying for me is the inconsistency of franchise releases. For example, Paramount goes out of their way to release all six Mission Impossible films on matching Steelbooks in anticipation of the physical release of Mission Impossible 7. Then, they release Mission Impossible 7, on Steelbook no less, and it doesn't match!!!! How hard is it to simply remain consistent with your own companies prior releases?? Maybe a small thing to some, but it is endlessly frustrating to me

I recently started upgrading my DVD and Bluray's to UHD or DVD to Bluray if no UHD is available. I buy them online, and here's a list of my gripes:
    1. Packaging issue: No one knows how to shrink-wrap the cases anymore, the plastic comes off in pieces and gets glued to the spine or other parts of the case.
    2. Packaging issue: I'm seeing some UHD releases come in "spindles" with discs stacked on top of another. That's really annoying and can scratch the disc too.
    3. Some UHD releases that weren't released that long ago seem to be out of print already, or at least at the major online retailers, so you have to resort to to the "marketplace" sellers.
    4. Most UHD releases seem to come with Bluray (and sometimes DVD) versions in the case as well, which is nice for playing on non-UHD devices, but some don't come with them and it doesn't make much sense to me. For example, The Crow.

    1. Movies that were released on VHS but were never released on Region 1 DVD, i.e., Poltergeist II & Poltergeist III.
    2. Extended versions of films that are not as good as the theatrical cut that get pushed so much by retailers that it makes the original version almost impossible to find, such as Sin City: Unrated, Extended, and Recut.
    3. Stores that were once known for having a huge DVD/Blu-ray selection that have "liquidated" their stock.

  • @NmDPlm31

Regional locked blu is still annoying. So many great film options from overseas but all the bonus features are unplayable (Yes, i know I can get a region free player, no I do not have one) As for double-dipping, the one aspect of DD that pisses me off is when a studio releases something in blu-ray only, then a year or two later finally does the 4K. It’s really made me hold off on buying anything that comes in blu. I’m glad I waited on that RoboCop blu that Arrow did because I just knew there had to be a 4K. And boy were people pissed when that got announced. One thing I’m annoyed by is this growing trend of quality sets/boxes getting released for the UK but we just get some lazy slapped together standard issue in the US. Like, why do they hate the US collectors so much? Another problem is QC. So many discs getting shunted out the door with errors that need replacement. Why is no one checking these things beforehand and getting it right? Sorry, but I’d rather you take an extra month and do your due diligence instead of just throwing stuff out the door. Lastly, half the time I hate whatever newfangled artwork some designer came up with for these releases. Which I why I am very pleased with there likes of Arrow, who give us double sided covers - one with the usually junky art and one with the original poster art. All of them should be doing this.

My favourite bugbear, region locked blurays. Especially when they come with a 4K and that is region unlocked and the extras are on a locked bluray. And likewise, haven't got a region free player nor do I want to have to buy one. Luckily many films state region A but turn out to play fine on region B sometimes, not all, but some do.

The Death of Physical media is a ploy to get more digital subscribers.
As far as I know, all streaming services are currently unprofitable - including Disney+, hence the release of Marvel and Star Wars in steelbook

  • @TheMediaHoarder
    @TheMediaHoarder 17 днів тому +1

Biggest market problem right now besides declining store stock is the studios themselves trying to get everyone to switch to digital- for over 10 years now, they've been putting new movies out on digital at least a week, sometimes MONTHS before they're on disc. Thankfully I no longer care about getting stuff right away, but it's also taken away any excitement new titles used to have. A by-product though is that the pirates get these digital copies online for free so I just watch them that way and maybe I'll buy the disc later.
Sony has been having a brief pop-up menu appear onscreen. when end credits start on their releases the past few years. That's ENTIRELY unacceptable and I've simply stopped buying their titles because of that. I don't use streaming services that do that either and the crap they do is the main reason I prefer physical media, even though Sony has now ruined that advantage.
I've always hated how discs come in cardboard slipcovers that aren't sealed. Stores then put their own price tags right on the covers and you often can't get them off without damaging them. I simply won't buy any disc if the store does that (I only buy new items unless they're on an obsolete format or long out of print, I never buy a used copy just to save money so paying more for a new copy and having the store do that is insulting as a collector.) Best Buy lost a LOT of sales from me that way, now they've just stopped selling them.
Overall packaging just isn't as good as it used to be. Most discs now have plain labeling when they used to be full-color. If they want to keep discs alive, they should make their appearance as attractive as possible, but with the trend of releasing titles early on digital it seems the big studios would rather kill them.

I like your video and topic. How come no one ever mentions Barnes and Noble as a major distributor of physics media? I only hear the store mentioned when they have the Criterion Collection sale. However, I've walked in the store on different months and picked up Arrow Video, Kino Lorber with their 50% off sale too! This month, I purchased a number of 4k movies from Paramount since B&N has been selling those for 50% ( I just watched Naked Gun)...my complaint with B&N is that very sticky price tag they place on the slipcover! Some B&N stores are better stocked than others but I am glad there is still another store I can walk into and browse around the physical media available 😊

Agree with #4. Not because its a steelbook, but because the price being 2x as much as the regular editions.
The thing of Collectors Editions for old films (often now the only release) being a steelbook with a few art cards and a poster for double the price of new films available in a plastic case is just silly.
In the UK it's about £45 for the Collectors, £25 for a regular new 4K film. It adds up and will turn people off buying the films because nobody casual wants to pay that price.

#1 - A completely standardized uniformity to releases.
STOP doing variant covers, variant packaging, store/site exclusives. Sometimes so many choices are a bug, not a feature. Don't make people constantly feel like there might be some "better version" out there. This goes hand-in-hand with double dipping. Don't give people the constant hesitation that a 4K upgrade might be on the way. Within reason, try to give people one definitive release at a time. This seems to be what the boutique labels try to do, to put everything they have into each release to make it worth it. To make their logo an assurance of quality.
Just settle on one Universal packaging + release of the film for each format.
#2 - I wish the industry would just settle on using the sturdy Criterion-style Blu Ray cases for EVERYTHING. They are sturdy and uniform. So many blu ray and 4K cases are terribly thin, flimsy, and easily damaged. They don't feel "built to last" and it is absolutely frustrating.

    2. Expired (looking at you WB) or no digital code (boutique labels). I deserve valid codes for the prices I pay.
    3. Poor quality discs. What is with the skipping &/or freezing on 4K. I have beat up old Blu-rays that play every time. Brand new, just out of the case, 4Ks I end up returning due to poor or no picture quality.
    4. Double dipping or having to wait 6 months to get a 4K. What is that about?????
    5. Lackluster transfers or missing/changed scenes. For the price I'm paying the picture and sound should be awesome. Yes, I do know the movie and expect it to be how I originally saw it.
    6. Director's cuts should be on 4K too and have a digital code. If you give me multiple cuts of the movie, I want all cuts as 4K not a mix of both 4K and blu-ray.

Sony pressed a second batch a couple of months ago but again packaged in an overpriced steelbook. Where the hell is the standard release at a reasonale price?
Another irritating one from Sony is those Columbia Classics box sets that are OOP and they're not releasing the titles contained within those box sets individually.

I've been a physical media collector for years... mostly due to my years working at FYE. Great list.
For me, there are two issues that irk me. 1) No 4K release or delayed 4K release after the blu-ray version is released. Lionsgate is guilty of this. You don't know if they'll ever release a 4k version.... you wait and you wait. You eventually cave and buy the blu-ray version because there is no indication that they'll release a 4K version... then BAM!!!! They announce a 4K version after you've spent money on the blu-ray version. Shit... even if you don't release the 4K version same day, at least give us a release window. 2) With so many titles going to boutique labels, it frustrates me that announcement sites on Twitter or FB are never clear if the release is an American (domestic) release. Yes, I know that 4K discs are region free... but i'm not a fan of expensive import prices... blu-ray discs in the set that I can't watch because they are region locked... and some of the damn rating icons that take up the bottom 3 of the boxes. (it destroys the aesthics of my shelf. I know... 1st world problems) It's become infinitely worse with the lack of brick & mortar stores. Now I have to wade through the weeds of an article/announcement and hope that it's a domestic release and not a UK or Austrailia, or Japan release. Just be clear if it's an American release or not, please!
Anyway, great list again and keep up the great work.

For me, the number one pain point, with no close second, is the player hardware. The more inexpensive players often have quality control issues, difficulty playing 100GB discs, and you have to manually turn Dolby Vision on or off, it they support Dolby Vision at all. The prices for mid-level players are a big barrier to entry, and a new model hasn’t been introduced to the market in years. The PS3 still holds the title as the best blu-ray player ever made, but none of the current game consoles are particularly good 4K disc players. 4) When ONLY an overpriced collector's edition packaged with a ton of shit I have no interest in is available for $80. There should always be a standard version.

This is a really big issue! Also, when a title is announced, and when it is put up for pre-order, it sells out very quickly/nearly instantly in pre-order... and that's IT. No more restocks AT ALL. I got one of the Alfred Hitchcock collections and the discs slide in and out of cardboard slots (can’t be good for the discs). Also, stacking multiple discs on a single spindle (with 3-4+ disc sets). I can’t count on my fingers anymore the number of times I’ve had to exchange titles that do this because I open them and the discs (that are sandwiched together) are scratched up in swirls that make them unreadable. It seems that physical media has come full circle
I have been a home theater guy since the days of Laser Disc. The big companies would bring out their major titles, the older stuff was either not released or left to off-brand. The collectors had Criterion.
But even then, movies first came out in pan-and-scan, then released in letterbox, and then with digital sound
Some movie companies included some extras, some came with no extras
A few movies came out with all the extras you could want, Alien, Aliens, T2, (James Bond) Golden Eye

    01. Not using original poster art. When boutique labels can do reversible, there's zero excuses why major labels can't do the same.
    02. Titles with only 4k discs. 4k is finicky. I like having the blu-ray included. The Crow and Twister come to mind. New 4k scans, but no updated blu-ray included or stand alone.
    03. Cases where discs are stacked or the hubs are so thin that the discs won't stay on.
    04. Releasing extremely limited editions on popular titles, then releasing a standard version a year later.

I rarely double dip . I still roll with Laserdisc and the only times I've pretty much double dipped is if the film was in pan scan or the picture quality was so bad. With 4k I don't own any and probably won't ever will... I don't think it's enough of a jump in quality to suggest buying again over Blu Ray. The term 4k drives me crazy because it's not. And picture and sound quality has been tweaked so much a lot of films don't even look or sound the same anymore. It's one of the reasons why I will never part ways with Laserdisc and DVD when a remastered version comes out. Laserdisc would contain the original Dolby Stereo, Dolby DIgital, DTS tracks that are unaltered . Prime example The Terminator. James Cameron has tweaked that film so much the audio doesn't remotely sound the same..The original track was mixed in mono. Now it has 5.1 or 7.1 mixes and sounds so out of place for a film that's so raw looking. I own the THX Laserdisc that's very good with it's original mono track. I'll never part ways with it regardless of any formats that came after. Physical Media is definitely the way to go with preservation but with some slight negative trade offs in some remastering of certain films

At least Canada still has Sunrise Records, which rose from the ashes of HMV Canada, for those of us who still like to browse new Blu-Rays and CDs in person. Sunrise, which now owns the HMV brand in much of the world, has even opened HMV-branded mini physical media stores within Toys R' Us Canada stores. Admittedly, I still have to buy some Blu-Rays online, especially when it comes to Japanese anime.
I pretty much only double-dip when upgrading although, and this is especially true for animated movies, there are many times when I ended up unintentionally double-dipping on the same format, DVD, because so many animated Blu-Ray releases, even semi-recent ones, are sold as combo packs along with a DVD. As far as I can remember, the only time I ever upgraded from a normal release to a boutique release on the same format was for Wes Anderson's Rushmore (1998), my first Criterion DVD which I mainly bought because the original Rushmore DVD from Touchstone (Disney) was very bare-bones and that purchase was almost a quarter century ago.
My number one complaint about physical media these days, and this is mainly about anime, is that a lot of the newer series I would dearly love to own on Blu-Ray, or even just DVD, simply aren't getting physical releases anymore, or at least not in North America. I could order, say, Gabriel DropOut as a box set from Japan but it would cost me at least $200 Canadian before intercontinental shipping and that's for something that doesn't even have English subtitles. (There are cheaper options for Gabriel Dropout that include English subtitles but they're bootlegs and I don't pay for piracy.) Ironically, these days, older anime seems to get a lot more in the way of North American Blu-Ray releases from classic 20th century anime-oriented boutique labels like Discotek and AnimEigo than does newer anime.
