As a retired Met officer, 1971 to 2001, when there was a police station in every town ,a place of safety, the Police Force provided a service, today as a Police Service, they don't provide that service. Theresa May's battle with the Police, increased the rot. The liberalism of our society and the cultural revolution have all made matters worse. Discipline and respect has gone out of the window, constant interference by those allegedly who know best have all made it worse. Parents have a huge part to play. In my service all crimes were attended, officers pro actively patrolled, I liked nothing better than parking up and watching what was going on and we knew our patches, all long gone. Will it return to normality , not unless there is a huge sea change

The police were just as ineffectual and corrupt in the 70s and 80s as they are now, there were just more of them. They ignored the victims of domestic violence and rape. You got no assistance if you were a woman. In fact, if you were beaten up, sexually assaulted or raped, they told you to your face it was your own fault and they weren’t even going to listen to you.

We used to get stopped by policemen hiding in shop doorways. They were all over 6ft tall, intimidating and they'd ask why you were out late at night, where you've been, where you're going and they could search you if they wanted. They were always outside the pubs at kick out time. Couldn't tell you the last time I was one now. Crime is through the roof and that's before terrorist attacks. Nottingham could have been avoided if he'd been challenged and searched

All knives of any variety are already banned in public if they are over 3” and unless you have a good reason for it- ie your job. So banning one particular knife which is already effectively banned anyway is just a PR job.

Videos, movies, music vids all promote knives, punishments at present have zero impact if you stab someone min 10 years in prison no ifs or buts. Whether the concept of having Police Commissioners ever had any validity is questionable. However, the fact appears to be that they're mostly just operating as the public relations officer. What's really needed is people with oversight and overall managerial control. Indeed, it's clear that many of the frontline police have a defensive attitude, where they will quickly turn on the victims if they dare to demand that the police do the job we pay them for. Both of these things are symptoms of an institution that knows it is failing but is lacking any clear strategy and knowledgable, robust, management.

I saw a lady being arrested for shoplifting a few days ago and 6 police officers, and 3 police cars to deal with her. In my day one, maybe two to deal with the same situation .
i saw an older woman being arrested for being drunk and disorderly in the town centre- she was loud but not threatening in any way -took 3 officers about 30 minutes to persuade her to get in the car@@S.Trades

I was battered by two home intruders in 2015. I refused to press charges, because I'd sooner let them get away with it. Which of course, they did.
