Exploring these areas for the very first time is simply a feeling that can't be recreated.

why can't new games capture that? is it because the idea of exploration and adventure was so new back then? that we all felt amazing doing it?

It's hard to capture lightning in a bottle, even if it did get captured again, you've already experienced it once somewhere else so it still won't be as strong a feeling.
A lot of games these days have more focus on bombast and awe though, rather than simple, subdued splendor.
Azuremyst is very somber and calm, a lot of old WoW zones are.
There'll be other games that try to capture that feeling eventually, if people long for it, someone'll make it eventually, it's just the way the wind's blowing for now.

Azuremyst Isle represents the best ambience WoW has to offer. Enough of a rhythm to lend it some momentum and make it unique, with a feeling that captures the beauty of Azuremyst and the melancholy of the Draenei's diaspora, but portrayed diffusely enough so that it doesn't constantly seize your attention, simply lending context and tonality to the environment.
Despite the amazing thematic and orchestral music that defines modern WoW, I do miss the more passive and atmospheric ambience that defined Vanilla, BC, and (to an extent) WotLK.
Thanks for putting this together; it's exceptionally well done.

This might be the most perfectly phrased description of older WoW music vs. new I've ever read, and like Daniel said, it's exactly how I feel but I'm not sophisticated enough with my words to have said it any better. Its the reason I can play the older soundtracks in my car, or while I work. It doesn't constantly grab my attention. I haven't been able to do that with anything post WotLK.

My youth was great... One day I will tell my children of the World of Warcraft.
    How it expanded my mind.
I played Blizzard games since the 90's. Starting with the Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo franchises.
When WoW came out... lets just say: those were the pinnacle times of MMORPG as a genre. Wow reigned supreme during the period 2005-2010.
We had a great run back then, revisiting the worlds that we left back in Warcraft 3 and stomping Arthas and Illidan.
But nothing in any of those experiences stuck more with me than a tiny isle, a serene place of mystique and wonder. A tranquil, peaceful starting zone where I first picked up my love for Azuraya, My Draenei Shaman.
Those memories are stuck in the 2007 paradigm...

This made me cry. My teen years nostalgia, after all the shit in school and on the streets I come home to my Azaroth to have fun with my friends and live another life. Many guild dramas , many friendships, there was even one of the first loves that I had, with a girl that I meet in WoW I still remember the spot on Azuremyst when we went to chill :) TBC is when I started.

All this game ever did was bring people together. Enemies, friends, trolls, even sometimes lovers... in a way that it’s so hard to do in real life anymore. This game shows a different side of our humanity that we otherwise seem to have lost touch with. That reality, like this music, is so sad yet so beautiful... like daydreaming up into the night sky, into endless possibilities. To all reading this, I wish you well on your journey. :)

When I was a teen, I met a guy in a dungeon we ran together, we were talking on vent and we were hanging out in stormwind when he randomly decided he wanted to go somewhere peaceful with no one around. Next thing you know, he took me to the spot exactly at 27:00-30:00 and picture this, I will never forget just sitting there at max level for hours on top of those structures enjoying the ambiance and talking about life. I never connected with a stranger over the internet as well as I did with that fella.
Update: This happened when I was a teen, maybe during Catacylsm expansion. I am 29 now and I no longer play WoW. I quit about three years ago. I don't know what became of the guy I met nor do I remember his name as it was about 15 years ago but I wish him well. I just wanted to share on of the MANY memories I created when I played wow. (and yes, I have made more meaningful connections in real life now LOL) Thank you all for sharing your experience and I'm glad a lot of you can share my nostalgia.

When I was a kid I remember making my first draenei and not really thinking much of Azuremyst, it was simply the starting area that I needed to get through (I didn't even play with the sound on), but a few years later I went back to it and realised that it's essentially my idea of heaven.
Animals slowly roaming around a quiet, secluded forest island, with lilac low light and a peaceful ambience track that makes you feel slightly drowsy, ancient elven ruins scattered around, bushes and beds of flowers everywhere, with tall dark pines that give you shelter, surrounded by silt shores stroked by gentle ripples, all far removed from the wars going on across the sea.
In my mind it's the ultimate sanctuary, so now I go there if I have a bad day at work or if I'm really tired, or really whenever I can hehe

I am basically 10 years late on this game ( TBC + WotLK on private server ), but nevertheless, after almost 2 years, I really have to say, I am feeling nostalgia. This was once again another game, I was playing alone like almost every game Ive played, even tho at the beginning it looked like I had someone to play with, cuz my my friend invited to play this game ( FOR FREE ). But after a while, he stopped playing. So it was just me. But the first experiences, either with my first undead Rogue roaming through Tirisfal Glades, or any other, it was something special. I remember first playing Draenei, having few beers in me, and just enjoying whole atmosphere of the starting zone on night. I dont think there is a game that made me feel so much as this game.... and you Everness enabling people to feel this whenever they want, especially when trying to sleep... thank you.

I remember coming back from a rave after non stop dancing all night 10+ years ago but couldn't sleep despite the exhaustion. Must have been around 4am and I decided to fire up WOW and after wandering around found myself in the area shown on 11:02. The exact music played (I'm getting the shivers listening to this.) I was home alone, with an amazing surround system, a large screen, in my dark room. I stared at this river for what seemed an eternity... and started crying. The music /scenery took hold of me and I couldn't control myself. For the first time in my life I felt like I had found something inside of me that I had been missing... missing for as long as I can remember. I cried for what seemed like hours. Out of nowhere an elf came up to me, she danced, showed me a flower, turned around and left. I cannot describe the exhilaration of happiness I felt at that moment, as if the weight of the world was lifted off my shoulders. I knew then that everything would be OK. That was the day everything changed. 10+ years later I still dream of that elf. She is burned in my memory as the angel that saved me. I look back and can only help but wonder "What if she didn't arrive that night? Would I be the person I am today?"

My wife (then girlfriend) used to make fun of me playing wow, but then I created an account for her and she slowly started playing and loving it. I played as a draenei warrior and she played a hunter. This was almost 10 years ago. it was so much fun. We would be talking over our phones since discord wasnt a thing. She would run over to every flower and pick it, feed her pet, and got so excited when she found a cheese shop in stormwind lol

I think the greatest element of the Azuremyst Isle was how believable it was. The only fanciful elements of the island were the people on the islands and the crashed spaceship of the Draenei. I really felt that I could wash ashore an island like Azuremyst, and not be shocked but the local plant life and geography.
Also I loved the color scheme of the island: cool colors punctuated by soft lavender tones.
But I think what stood out the most was the ambient music of the environment. It didn't feel as bombastic or as intense as the rest of the World of Warcraft soundtrack sounded, and had an air of mystery to it. It really fit the spiritual nature of the Draenei.
I hope they re-release BC as they have done with classic so I can play a Draenei Shaman. To explore Outland again as one of my favorite races, and to finish all those instances/raids I didn't complete with my first playthrough, would be a joy for sure.

Amazing zone. Still one of my favorites to this day and the music really makes it. It's somber and a hint of desperation. It's especially emotional when you find the Night Elf who lost his family in the nearby home that's destroyed and overrun. He is just sitting on the edge of the dock contemplating the point of life after losing his family. I listen to this to fall asleep sometimes.

This was my first ever experience playing WoW, it was during cata so I was late to the party but the sheer serenity and calm that permeates Azuremyst Isle still fills me with a feeling of comfort. I'll always cherish the good times this game gave me, even as it was wavering in it's vision and even if I'm entirely disillusioned with the current state of the game.

My very first character was a Draenei, a mage on a pirate server where I spent years. Time later, I moved to the original with my back then wife. We played together for days and entire months in the WoD era. We started our own Draeneis, she chose a shaman and I tried my pally and a monk elf to use the boost and the double mount. Time before, we broke up and now and since 2016 I'm unable to play again WoW, too many memories come back to my mind from an age of tears, happiness and a total rollecoaster of emotions. Now, I have the money to keep paying the original but not the time nor the energy. Hearing this poured some tears from inside of my soul. Thanks for uploading this. For the alliance, forever in my mind and memories.

As some have stated, some of you keep characters in this zone just for the ambient music and what not and I can't say I don't blame any of you. I go through my WoW periods of taking a break from the game which is so easy to do now days simply because WoW just isn't the game that it was as is evidence by this amazing soundtrack here. When I do go back to the game, I always start with new characters for this zone and Ghostlands simply because of the lore and most definitely the music. It's always such a happy/sad mix of emotions and I'll never forget this part of the game.

Then one night, he visited an old friend who had this particular video on loop for the evening, just for some background ambience. The post-addict didn't even notice the origin of the music, that's how familiarly it sounded to him. Like wind or rain. But something in his brain was activated again. But we all kind of avoid dipping too much into it, well, because it's everyday life. And if you speak out in the wrong environment, you'll be regarded as boring, nerdy, or straight up crazy. Doesn't bother me much, but it's good to reflect on. And from time to time, you do find some rare people that speak the same mind and they become your friends.

The music in wow was a huge reason for me to log so many hours into it! Today, I listen to many of these great atmospheric tracks while writing my book, and each of these musical landscapes really tell a story. That is something many new games lack, the wonder of music. Also, the idea of not having everything served, but having to look around to find stuff is what exploration IS. Many new devs dont understand this, and think people are stupid. People arent stupid, and trying to cater to the masses instead of a specific group will only make a boring game for everyone.

I've never really met people in the game who talked about how cool this zone/music is. Feels good reading the comments here. This song brings back a lot of memories and nostalgia, but reading the comments almost heartbreaks me. Peace friends

Nope, Wrath of the Lich King is the best expansion.
But pre-Cata WoW (with the exception of MoP and Legion) was the golden age.
