Wow thank you so much for your quick reply! Yes I am in the US and do most of my shopping at rio. I do have the rolled sandpaper ones you are describing. I was referring to the ones at 4:53 but looking again Those may be just another set of your 3m radials it was just hard to tell while they were moving. The other one I was referring to was at 6:22 dark grey and a bit thicker. :)
okay yeah, the purple one is a bristle disk, it's an off brand that I found on amazon, more affordable than the 3m radials but maybe not as high of quality. The other mandrel attachment would be a dedeco silicon polishing wheel in a medium grit. These wheels are fantastic for solder removal however the dust is poisonous so be sure to wear a good dust mask. they have silica in them which can be very problematic for the lungs with long term exposure.
I am so glad I just discovered your channel as I am a struggling beginner metalsmith. I have the first snap on sanding discs you used but can you tell me where to find the other sanding/polishing discs you used? One was purple and the other was thicker dark grey...please and thank you!
hi! they are slotted mandrels with sandpaper rolled around them. You can buy them already pre-rolled on disposable mandrels or you can purchase blank slotted mandrels and cut a piece of sandpaper and wrap it around yourself.
GREAT JOB YOUNG LADY AND I NOTICE YOU ARE A LEFTY ,I AM LEFT AS WELL AND SURE IS NICE SEEING SOME ELSE DOILG JEWELRY LEFT HANDED . THE RING IS BEAUTIFUL
it's called pumice. A volcanic stone that is really great for absorbing heat. If you are located in the United States, Rio Grand is an online supplier for all things jewelry and they will likely have it.
Beautiful ring. I'm new to this, so if these are dumb questions.....how come you didn't solder more on the outside/inside of the band joint for a smooth one piece ring appearance, more strength and longevity? Also, why not add more solder where the stone bezel meets the band, again for strength and a more buttery appearance?
all good questions. I personally dont like the look of a lot of solder piled up. I like to use as little solder as needed for a nice clean look, the solder itself is really strong actually, so there's not a high chance of the stone setting falling off barring a situation where someones hand gets caught in something and they have to use a lot of force to get it out. As far as the seamless band, that's just an area where my craftsmanship could use some work. It would be better overall for me to bend the ring and make sure the edges line up just right before soldering so that I dont have to fill any gaps.
What a draw-dropping, kickass, phenomenal ring!!! Loved seeing your process in stages (although I do wish you’d let us see you soldering on the details 🙃)! You put so much thought and planning into your design, and then all those hours of labor I’m sure, and the results are amazing!! I’d love to see lots more videos! I just subscribed! 😃
Love the video! Thanks for being thorough and talking through the steps! Keep it up. ☺️ may I ask, where you find sheet metal that large? I currently use 3x3 sheets. Thanks.
thank you! yes, i get my sheet metal usually from rio grande. Its an online silversmithing supply. You can get silver sheet cut in any size really, I go for the 6x4" option usually
I'm not sure if you can do online orders but I'm from NM and the companies here have sheets in 6×36. You just tell them how many inches you need and they come in 6×what ever you need lengths. Look them up the company is Thunderbird Jewelry Supply
Great video, but man you really don't need to talk so much lol, just point out what is happening and then let the viewers enjoy the video. I mean it was kinda cringey, but overall pretty informative
I totally disagree, with respect, to everything you just said. Why say so many negative things? If you don’t like it, you shouldn’t comment. I think she was awesome and informative and I loved hearing her walk us through her process. 😊
I think you are an excellent Teacher! Thanks
Nicely done! As a complete rookie, I learned a lot... Thank you.
I really like your design for this ring. Thanks for sharing!
Fantastic video its always fun to watch other artist work
