As a Texans fan, I thought Culley was abused by the horrible upper management. I like the man and thought he was badly treated but he did his best. The team played hard for him. Thanks for defending a good man who deserved better.

He is set to make 17 million dollars total over the next 3 years after the Texans have fired him, plus his 5 million this year. Not bad severance pay for getting set up to fail. He should def get another chance elsewhere.

dude im a saints fan and this just looks like to me a couple of pretty bad things, starting with watson seeming to ask for a black coach...texans say no...hire a black coach after a while cause of the crapstorm and then completely destroy the roster and try to tank the team so the guys coaching CAREER is ruined cause hey he got his shot right? horrible. Culley must be one hell of a coach to win the games he did and the way the team won them .Hell to even show up for work for that roster my God. I can honestly say that i dont even think Bellichek himself couldve gotten as much from that roster. It looks to me like the Texans are not only tanking the season for draft picks but tanking the team so they can move it to San Antonio or something cause they know the nfl will always give houston another franchise theyre too big a population not to. Maybe he wants to move to some other market besides that im not sure but one things for certain coach culley deserved to be lauded and rewarded for his efforts not fired. I know what watson means now about Houston's ownership.

Culley got screwed BUT he’ll still pocket $22 million from this year and his buyout. As a lifetime assistant I would suspect that’s close to what he’s made in his whole career. That’s a nice retirement package at least.

I worry for Dan Campbell for the same reason. Now granted, not too many head coaches up to this point have earned their place in Detroit with their track records; but I expect more from the Fords as far as having Campbell's back. _Campbell_ had _his_ team playing hard and hustling, despite a cavernous lack of talent, and he deserves at least two more seasons to get the Lions competing for playoff spots year-in and year-out. Campbell is a Lion through and through. And the Fords had better give him a lot more latitude than the McCaskey's or Texans ownership.

Here's another weird (and sad) tidbit: I live in the Houston area, so I listen to the local sports radio (wish I didn't have to, cause I don't root for them). The talking heads spent the last year talking about how bad Nick Casario is at his job, and making fun of how the perception is that he's trying to make Houston into "New England South" when he hired O'Brien, and doing things the Patriots Way (which fits what RE said about him being in the headsets during games), and the first thing these idiots do when they hear of the firing of Culley is defend the organization, saying stuff like "we all knew this was a one-and-done hire" and "Culley was in over his head," treating a man that has coached in football as long or longer than many of us have even cared about football like he was a wet-behind-the-ears hot shot. A lot of teams would do better to hire Culley than what they have. He gets his guys to play hard, and that seems to be hard to do with professionals that shouldn't have to be motivated to play that way. Houston sports are a joke, no matter which one you pick.

Whatever the truth is Culley doesn't seem to have ever been the Texan's genuine choice. He did a decent job with all the Watson drama and a weak roster.

Thats just it the roster wasnt only weak it was beyond DECIMATED! Please allow me to explain: decimation was the ancient roman practice of taking a group of people and judging all of them for a particular crime by killing one out of every ten of them and the survivors are forgiven and continue to serve. The texans have suffered a rate of attrition beyond that as they have torn down and gutted this roster completely. So the roster wasnt just weak it was one of the absolute worst opening day rosters for a football team this century! So for a guy to take that kind of roster with all the bad blood between ownership and players and the constant Deshaun watson circus a roster DESIGNED to fail and SQUEEZING 4 or 5 wins out of it it all why keeping a good and professional attitude then it appears to the rest of the league that you have caught that rarest of things : lightning in a bottle . You found your coach Texans why keep looking? Theyre going to destroy the team further because that type of success wasnt what they planned for?Makes no sense. Me im a saints fan and i thank God for organizations like the texans, browns,Jaguars,Giants,Lions etc etc that keeps my saints out the basement.

It really does seem like Eisen doesn't get it. Culley did do everything asked of him. He got paid handsomely for it. 22m dollars to have an uncomfortable year as a head coach in the NFL. Answering dumb questions from the media and coaching a surely losing team. It's that simple. He was not the coach of the future, could he have maybe stayed next year? Sure, but if you already had a coach in mind that you wanted for the long term future, you would want to lock him up this offseason if he's available.
