I had a greeneige (relaxed khaki by sherwin Williams) on my walls in our previous home for 8 years. I got compliments on it but I was ready for a change. Now that we’re building what I’m calling a “coastal craftsman”, edgecomb gray really fits as a main house color. I love it as a neutral. I’m doing Washington Blue in the office space and Rainwashed by sherwin Williams in the master bedroom along with Topsail by SW in one of my daughters’ bedrooms. EG has a calming effect so that when people enter my home, their eyes are drawn to the view of the water through the glass sliders in the great room. In my opinion, neutrals still have their place in design- especially when we want the views to take center stage!
We still love Relaxed Khaki (almost 20 years now)…so you see green undertones in EG? It looks beautiful online (via Google). Thanks.
@@icedteamama176 I don’t see green in it but maybe it does have some green. I definitely saw green in RK though. And since I posted this answer I’ve changed my mind again. Lol! I’ve decided to use Classic Gray because it’s a much lighter greige. I saw some images of EG on the Houzz app where it looked like a putty color in certain lighting. We will have coffered ceilings with natural stained wood planks in the coffers. That will darken the room slightly so I figure I’m better off going with a really light neutral!

My sister and her husband have used simply white for trim and Benjamin Moore Devon Cream for walls in two house and multiple rooms And it looks beautiful in many different lights and spaces. Much warmer than gray

I see deep green coming up in popularity
I have Pale Oak painted in my entire main floor of my one story home. It is gorgeous with my older hardwood floor and crisp white trim, but there is only one draw back: in the morning the northern light makes it pull a pinky tone which I cant stand! The rest of the day is gorgeous though. I dont know if I'm bothered enough to change it. LOL!
Just painted my living room ceiling Chantilly Lace and the walls Pink Cloud 887. Original 1948 oak floors that I refinished have a honey color. It all looks lovely - clean yet cozy.
Lots of those colors were sold because they are the wall colors of rental apartments. Therefore, they scored as popular, because it takes so many cans to paint walls of rental apartments. Almost always, apartment buildings have apartments that are painted all the same identical color. Much of the time, it’s Swiss Coffee.
We just painted our living and dining with Lady Finger by BM. It is such a beautiful color! Leans a touch pink or yellow, depending on the light. With our cream-colored sofa and blue highlights, it works beautifully as a true beige. Most beiges are too yellow for me!

Classic gray is pretty too
Screw neutrals like white, off white, pale grey, greige, etc, I prefer colour! I want my future bedroom to be Benjamin Moore’s Flame because I want a nice vibrant sunset orange for my future bedroom! With a game room[[for video games]] to be Party Peach! Maybe Lemonade for a future bathroom as that’s a nice clean yellow shade…
Yes indeed, the grey is a safe bet so we'll be seeing that for a while. BTW Have you already done a video on good colors for small bathrooms?

I also need color suggestions for a small bathroom, although I’m thinking of using Pale Oak, since it will coordinate with my fixed elements and existing bright white trim color.
Before watching I'm guessing chantily lace and revere pewter, grey owl would make it to this list xD
Revere Pewter is my favorite on this list, just because it's more of a mid-tone. I think mid-tones can have a calming effect in a house, since they are not too bright, but not too dark. In ten years, I hope we see more off-whites with slightly more prevalent undertones. By that time, people will want to paint over their gray walls everywhere, but still try to work with their white and gray countertops, floors, and islands from current trends. What better way than whites or off whites with a hint of color or faint colorful undertones? Also, you mentioned Benjamin Moore frequently cycling out colors. Would be a really fun video idea to cover some of your favorite "off the books" or "discontinued" colors from Benjamin Moore or your favorite brands.
People should stop complaining about gray, you don’t see us gray fans commenting on we don’t want to talk about gaudy happy colors. I think grays are so soothing and elegant and so hard to get right because they have so many tricky undertones therefore it’s necessary to talk about them. I just wish they were made of different combinations of black and white, why is the red, green, blue and yellow necessary! 😅

Edgecomb Gray is a historical color and definitely NOT a "traditional" gray.
@@Daysleeper1000 yes I agree I love this color ( Edgecomb gray) but unfortunately all popular greige colors are too dark and complicated for my house that's probably I am not into this gray/greige fashion.
@@elenalee6791 I understand completely. Edgecomb is pretty good / plays well with others but , it can go too dark in west facing rooms with too little light, for sure!

My house came with magnolia- the UKs simultaneously most beloved and most hated colour! It is kinda the default, although it is sytarting to see challengers, like warm barley, if you are selling or renting out a house, magnolia is the cheap, easy option to create a clean, open, neutral appearance. I just left it in the hall, stairs and living area, let's the light from the living room filter through the hallway well.
My daughter is currently house hunting (in the UK). You can be guaranteed that if a property has been flipped here it has a white kitchen and bathroom, grey walls, grey carpets maybe even grey fences. I appreciate that it's easy, inoffensive and goes with most furniture/ ornaments but it's starting to look dated.

Lol! So much the same! We did do our house in neutrals like this, but I wanted to have color other places than the walls and trim. Our kitchen cabinets are Benjamin Moore's Folk Art. The neutrals are like a blank canvas to fill with anything.

I enjoy your videos and have a question. My LR and DR are adjacent to each other and I'm trying to decide on paint. I have new Ikea white curtains, almost floor to ceiling, I'm using black rods. Would you recommend a white or something with a hint of color. I usually love color but these two-room have large windows and face the south. I did watch your south-facing color video. I liked waters edge and going to the chapel. NOt sure I would put either on these walls.
Just want a cream that doesn't look yellow or bright white for a north facing room. That's it. Not so hard I thought...then I tried.

I think neutral colors will always be popular but tricky. Personally I think as you point out the quality of the light makes a difference. For example when I grew up in a western high dessert area I remember my mom using the green leaning grey. It balanced the warm slightly harsher reflective light. But this looked off when I tried it in Seattle made it feel a bit bilious and a warmer geige or cool bluer was better. So I learned a neutral generally is about balance and it is tricky!

Edit: and as far as these going out of style. My answer would be NOT AT ALL. These are classic and easy to decorate around. Great video. I'm saving this one too. I have a save list that's titled James/Paint..lol. I do have one question...do you think accent walls are REALLY going out?

Reverse Pewter - feels Greige and Classic.
I can NEVER decide on paint color. My house stayed white FOREVER because i just couldnt decide. Then i decided and i HATED it. Repainted and MEH. It's ok. It actually goes with a framed picture i have. It still doesnt grab me. I think the problem is, those windows are under a covered front porch.
Ceiling color should be two shades darker than the walls because it draws the eyes down to the walls. Notice any room where the walls are darker than the ceiling, it draws your eyes up to the ceiling. So unless your ceilings are fabulous, make them darker.

James - I just tried HC-173 for a main interior color and found it to be too beige and washed out in my home with lots of windows. I'm interested in trying AF-680 "Wish". Have you done a video on AF-680 or could you?

Calm. I caught the blueish tone you see as purple (could be my screen?) that was slightly different and that’s why I like it.
My favorite off-white is not on this list! I am still haunted by the warm, rust, deep red focus of the ‘00s that every single friend of mine, and I, painted all over our first homes during the housing boom of that decade. 🤮 Hopefully the next decade will bring more color with cool tones that stay away from orange. 🤞🤞

I guess I am just a true blue Charles Faudree fan. I adore warm jewel colors….neutrals are so boring in my opinion. Will always keep my red kitchen …love the dramatic. Trying to figure out a good one for my powder room.
There's a infinite number of colors to choose from so I say go with what you like.

I have jatoba brazilian cherry hardwood floors looking for suggestions on main wall colour . I do prefer the neutrals since the room is a small kitchen /livingroom with east facing windows. Love the videos.
Something green or a gray with green undertones is what I’d suggest.

Had living room painted cloud white; room has good western lighting-the end result: too yellow!!! Very disappointed.

Purchased samples of Classic Gray, Silver Satin and Balboa Mist and was so disappointed; the colors made me feel like I was at Walmart. Ugh. Yuck!

@@thepaintpeople trying to calm down a previously Tuscan inspired decor. The home is Spanish Revival. Have removed the dark, busy granite counters and replacing with off-white counters, off-white handmade 4"x4" tile with light gray-ish grout to tie in with the existing limestone floors and cognac cabinets. The walls are presently painted SW Macadamia 6142 which paired with the cognac cabinets makes the space too dark and dated. Thoughts?

Exactly! Dunno if you’ll reply but these people have clearly no taste in paint colours and are just bland, boring, terrible, and like you said not inspiring. Whenever I move I want my room painted Benjamin Moore’s Flame cause I want a bold sunset orange for my future bedroom! Flame is a shade lighter than Tawny Day Lily which looks more neon so a shade lighter would be better plus the description on the site for Flame mentions sunsets.. I love actual colour on walls! Maybe Party Peach[[I want a cantaloupe shade]] for a game room, Lemonade[[it’s a pale yellow yeah but it’s a clean pale yellow which sounds nice for a bathroom]] for a bathroom, etc, but yeah even though I love Winter I prefer a lot of warmer colours as they[[especially orange]] relax me… =w=
