I also hear Marvin in Michael - and other influences as per the comments - I love the way great music and musicians loop across generations and genres. Bloody brilliant!
To watch an honest and fresh reaction like that is just so amazing. I have been listening to Michael for over a year and no one has blown me away like this since, well, for decades! To see him being appreciated like this makes me so happy.
Goosebumps seeing this live in a small venue. Each member comes out one at a time to their positions as it builds. They used it to open the show when I saw them the first time.
MK 8s a true artist. He doesn't just write music and perform. He gives us a full on Arrangement. This is a musical production. He didn't raise the bar. He saw the bar and said that he will not be measured, nor will he be the measuring stick. I freakin love his music.
Michael Kiwanuka has made very good music for a while now, this song was from his "Love & Hate" record which I highly recommend listening to! Also his latest album titled "KIWANUKA" which recently won a mercury prize award over here in the UK!
Michael, I think my favorite part about watching your videos is finding someone else who appreciates music as much as I do. I don't know music theory as far as technically, but I understand it from just hearing it and I can identify the technicality behind it, and you take what I feel and hear from music and you break it down with a technical analysis. Keep up the good work, you are incredible man.
Yes! KIWANUKA! Saw him open for Gary Clark Jr. a couple years ago in Asbury Park, killer show. Love and Hate was playing non-stop that summer. Good stuff!
Michael, loved you reaction to this Kiwanuka video! He's one of my favorite artists, in fact, I had the pleasure of seeing him in Metro Detroit in Sept. of 2012 at a small venue along with Marcus Foster and The Bahamas and the tickets were only $15! It was a night to remember and the added bonus is that I got my picture taken with him. My friends and I relish in the fact that we got to experience him early in his international career and have seen the progression of his style which runs deep and wide. He mentions Bill Withers as one of his major influences as well.
Man u keep hitting my favorite artists! I was on a Kiwanuka kick for a few months! That live studio series are the best versions of his songs... Great writer
He's one of my favorite artists. Listened to that album a lot during a breakup a few years ago. Kind of helped me through it. Whole album is pretty on point.
This performance is so freaking kick-ass, I love how "old-school" it sounds, like some mix of Motown Records in general + prog rock, so damn good! And I know it was not the intention of the video, but your guitar "answering" to Michael's here and there sounded so cool too! Almost like you were there playing along with them. Really wholesome!
Loved this song since i heard it on the HBO show Big Little Lies - it's the theme song! Entire show has phenomenal music. Janis Joplin, Leon Bridges, the like.
I was blind but now I can see... Thanks Michel I now understand why I love this song, it sounds like Pink Floyd. I discovered this wonderful song watching big little lies, at first it didn't caught my attention but one day I started to listen to it and now I can't stop it. I also didn't knew about your channel, if all videos are like this I now I'll have a lot of fun
Michael, watching your excitement one tune to the next, getting into rhythm. You can't help getting that shoulder and head moving. I'm a 68 year old grandma and can never stop moving to thus music. Thanks for putting your piece to this video. Rock on!!
Just found your channel yesterday (because of your playing god reaction 😂) and i must say how refreshing it is to see a first reaction to this live studio recording that i used to watch over and over again... Its been too many years since i clicked on the video but i still got goosebumps just like i did the first time i heard it. Your reaction at 9:52 when the song actually starts put a wide grin on my face because i felt like a child who showed a parent their fav band and it genuinely impresses them... Thank you for this 🥰
Glad you’ve found him , went to see him last night again been following him for nearly 10 years , so underrated and the best think to come out of here for a long time.
I’ve loved Michael Kiwanuka for quite some time. To me, he’s so reminiscent of Clapton, along with some soul. But I can hear Pink Floyd too. Love him. Have you ever listened to Jinjer? Try “Pisces”. Talk about some transitions. Edit: Also weird coincidence, but hours later, I was looking for a Rival Sons song to send to a friend after watching this video and found you there too.
I loved Cold Little Heart as much as you did Michael. Not only is the song itself beautfiul, but the execution here is right up there with the greatest studio sessions ever.
Love that song. However, I have to say that I like the album version even more. Driving a convertible down a cost line… that’s the perfect moment for this song ;) Thanks!
Saw him live in Australia last year, incredible musician and band. You should check out the live solo from Love and Hate. The way the guitarist builds the solo is spectacular.
This song when I first heard did to me what it did to you, it's so surprising, haunting and beautiful, the lyrics are superb make ure you take time to listen to them. In my top ten forever, thankyou for doing it and bless you Kay for the suggestion. ♥️
What a great video👏 love this love version of this song,as a total amateur no idea why it captivates me so much but great to see someone so musically aware give it some serious kudos. Top vids.
It's a shame he isn't more widely heard or appreciated.. I remember seeing him on Jools Holland (tell me a tale and im getting ready!), just had a look it was back in 2011!! He was this good back then. I wouldn't say he's under-rated but definitely under-discovered..
Michael Kiwanuka started out as a session guitarist; didn't think he had the right kind of voice for the time cause he didn't sound like Usher. His voice is so soothing. Love the comment above with Marvin Gaye comparison
Family is number one priroity. It's nice you can combine the two, your family and your UA-cam family! Kudos to you, Rock On! Never heard of him before, but will look up more by him, loved it! Keyboard and slide made it. Great voice as well, totally enjoyed it!
Hey Michael, I really appreciate your approach to sussing out tunes. It helps to see and hear how you find the tonal centers and the progressions. Also, your clear enthusiasm for music is infectious (no vaccines needed!). You and Uncle Larry are tops in my book.
I remember this show on HBO (I think) had this song in the trailer. I eventually went to UA-cam looking for it and was greeted with this live version. It's now one of my favorite song of recent years
Yup. My mom watched Big Little Lies and I loved the intro song which led me to discover Michael Kiwanuka as an artist and he’s one of my favorite modern musicians.
"White Floyd meets black soul" is how I described it.I love the main bass part too - love to know who wrote the bass. Kiwanuku loves Pink Floyd...and Marvin etc
Grateful you did this one…. Saw him as an opening act for Gary Clark Jr. in 2017.. I hadn’t heard his music, or at least I hadn’t known of him… Wow! I’ll never forget standing there on the ground as the Bass filled my body… If I remember correctly, this was the first song they did… Imagine being 50 yards from the ocean on an 82 degree evening… right after the sun set… I must’ve jammed to this song hundreds of times since.. lol.. well, maybe 99.. Thank you for breaking it down for us.. How fortunate we are to be alive… ☮️
I just discovered them a couple of days ago. I was looking for live sessions in general cause I believe live sessions are much better. And I found them and fell in love with the first note and new they were something special. So I restarted the video maxed my speaker’s volumen and just listened
Michael Kiwanuka is such a good songwriter. Also, if you're into jam bands, I'd recommend checking out this band I found the other day called Aqueous. Been loving their tune "weight of the word"
I just recently found your channel and love what you're doing! I've been trying to get back into the guitar after a bit of a hiatus and you've inspired me to tackle it even more. Although there is no visual content to go along with the audio I feel like you would find the track "Snoozer's Telephone Blues" by Snoozer Quinn interesting. Take care and stay safe with all this Covid madness.
Michael. You’re amazing. It’s funny that the songs you feature on your channel I have had I have had in my favorites. My wife turns me on to a lot of it. She’s a treasure hunter when it comes to music. This is a beautiful song that we heard in a series called Big Little Lies I think. They have the short version and then they have this done me too with the amazing intro. I really envy your talent in a healthy way of course. Have an ear for extra special music as does my wife. My playlist is filled with gems like this. He’s an amazing artist and I love the way a lot of this type of music is setting itself up with amazing musicians that make the songs such treasures. It was my dream all my life to play guitar. I don’t have the ear I dexterity for it but being able to watch people like you who instantly know what’s going on is satisfaction enough. You’re a great teacher and musician. I will definitely susbscribe today and I’ll be sending some suggestions your way. Congrats on everything. Angelo
I love this impromptu playing along with it! You should just start another channel where you just do impromptu playing over songs and instrumentals. I’d love to hear you play riffs along side the guitar In the song “marooned” by Pink Floyd.
React to The Final Frame by the same guy! There is a recording of it from the same live session, and Michael Kiwanuka's solo in that version is spectacular
I remember the first time I heard Michael Kiwanuka. It was "One More Night". I was hooked. Started learning guitar in December 2019. We are now learning to solo by my ability to determine the root and chord, and then of course applying the modes/scales/arpeggios/pentatonics. This is the first song I have ever been able to completely work out on my own, and though my version isn't a masterpiece, this sure as hell is.
It’s as if Marvin Gaye was ten years younger, joined Pink Floyd, and brought some friends over to sing gospel/rnb backing vocals.
I'd watch that movie, by the way. :P
Haven’t watched the video, don’t know a thing about the band, but my goodness am I excited!!!!
There’s some Clapton in there for sure!
love this
I also hear Marvin in Michael - and other influences as per the comments - I love the way great music and musicians loop across generations and genres. Bloody brilliant!
Kiwanuka is by far the best album of 2019. It's a masterpiece.
And so underrated
Won the UK Mercury Prize and is nominate for a Grammy in Rock Album category (although I would not myself call his music Rock)
The song "solid ground" is so hypnotic I love it!!!
Truly a masterpiece. Just spellbinding.
There are lots of great albums in 2019, this is one of them.
His brain will fall out when he listens to the Love and Hate guitar solo.
Lol
That's as amazing solo...
"Its very Pink Floydy." And as people of taste we all know there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
A fucking masterpiece, always brings me to tears. Really hartfelt melodies and lyrics, absolute masterpiece
I listen to this song everyday, it became a part of me.
Sounds like “shine on you crazy diamond”
MK 8s a true artist. He doesn't just write music and perform. He gives us a full on Arrangement. This is a musical production. He didn't raise the bar. He saw the bar and said that he will not be measured, nor will he be the measuring stick.
I freakin love his music.
His live version of love and hate is also a killer song
one of the best songs I've ever heard, literally in my top 5. Never won't blow me away.
Everyone plays the guitar, Micheal Kiwanuka makes it SING.
Michael Kiwanuka has made very good music for a while now, this song was from his "Love & Hate" record which I highly recommend listening to! Also his latest album titled "KIWANUKA" which recently won a mercury prize award over here in the UK!

Every single one of his albums is worth a listen. The self-titled "KIWANUKA" is my personal favourite, but every one has something special about it.
Completely agree; and really need to listen to each from start to finish - they flow so well from song to song; they complete each other
Yes! KIWANUKA! Saw him open for Gary Clark Jr. a couple years ago in Asbury Park, killer show. Love and Hate was playing non-stop that summer. Good stuff!
Kiwanuka's "Love & Hate" is another you might enjoy. It's a beautiful piece.
Yeah I want a love and hate reaction pleeeeeeeeeeease🥹🥹🥹🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Brilliant song also
Michael, loved you reaction to this Kiwanuka video! He's one of my favorite artists, in fact, I had the pleasure of seeing him in Metro Detroit in Sept. of 2012 at a small venue along with Marcus Foster and The Bahamas and the tickets were only $15! It is epic and flawless...beautifully crafted. Seeing MK live is a must. Amazing
Agree - have seen him 3 times; also got a chance to chat with him after a show. Very humble guy
He's one of my favorite artists. Listened to that album a lot during a breakup a few years ago. Kind of helped me through it. Whole album is pretty on point.
Same here, man
@@joshuadinan5512 i feel this
I don't understand music, but I know this is one of the best songs in the past decade. My ears are ok.
Thanks Michael, I never saw him on electric guitar before!
John Mayer loves this guy.
I wish I could forget this song and listen to it for the first time once again
Michael Kiwanuka is fantastic! So talented, he's gonna be huuuuge.
That song gives me countless waves of epic goosebumps
Loved this song since i heard it on the HBO show Big Little Lies - it's the theme song! Entire show has phenomenal music. Janis Joplin, Leon Bridges, the like.
Yes, great soundtrack on “Big Little Lies”.
I got hooked on the show because of the music
Me too xx this is my favorite performance of this song xx
I was blind but now I can see... Thanks Michel I now understand why I love this song, it sounds like Pink Floyd. I can't play one single chord on any instrument but first thing is that I noticed is your humbleness, and that's very very precious.
Michael, watching your excitement one tune to the next, getting into rhythm. You can't help getting that shoulder and head moving. I'm a 68 year old grandma and can never stop moving to thus music. Thanks for putting your piece to this video. Rock on!!

Has a Shine On You Crazy Diamond sound!
You need to listen to his self titled "KIWANUKA" from start to finish. It is GENIUS.
It's a classic album, like we used to get all the time, if you don't have it get it. I can promise you that you will not be disappointed
SUCH a good call. LOVE this song and particularly this rendition! Gonna hit play now.... :)
His latest album is an absolute master piece.
I loved
Cold Little Heart as much as you did Michael. Not only is the song itself beautfiul, but the execution here is right up there with the greatest studio sessions ever.
Love that song. However, I have to say that I like the album version even more.
Driving a convertible down a cost line… that’s the perfect moment for this song ;)
Thanks!
So glad you found Kiwanuka! Give his first album a spin on a Sunday morning
lol u can tell he's having a good time listening to that solo verse at the start when drums kicks in, that smile tho :v
This is why I love this channel.
The guitar feels a little Prince to me in places. I love this song and this live version is everything.
Saw him live in Australia last year, incredible musician and band. You should check out the live solo from Love and Hate. The way the guitarist builds the solo is spectacular.
God, this song always gives me 15 minutes of chills and pure happiness! Use it for meditation sometimes too
Floyd song w/ the whale noises you're thinking of at 5 min. is "Echoes" - a masterpiece.

It's like the sun coming out, the change from the intro. So cool.
Kiwanuka has such a beautiful voice and soulful sound. Love his latest album
He is also such a nice person; lucky to have met him after a concert
It's a shame he isn't more widely heard or appreciated.. I remember seeing him on Jools Holland (tell me a tale and im getting ready!), just had a look it was back in 2011!! He was this good back then. I wouldn't say he's under-rated but definitely under-discovered..

Just discovered Michael Kinwanuka and heard this song and then immediately your youtube blurb on the song. Very cool stuff!!!
Thank you for this. Another great artist discovered.
Love your music appreciation, pal! That Pink Floyd vibe is absolutely goosebumpy in melancholic way don't you think? Thanks for this :)
Great Song! So glad I watched this video, there's always something to learn too!

15:22 Aaaannnnndddd I was waiting for that expression 😲😏
Yes! @15:22 he thought the song was over
Great song, great video from you. The Solina String synth played at the beginning is also what Pink Floyd used on Shine On You Crazy Diamond.
I remember this show on HBO (I think) had this song in the trailer. I eventually went to UA-cam looking for it and was greeted with this live version. It's now one of my favorite song of recent years
Yup. My mom watched Big Little Lies and I loved the intro song which led me to discover Michael Kiwanuka as an artist and he’s one of my favorite modern musicians.
love the sensibility you have about music, i feel like we could be great friends or bandmates
Looks an inspiring location for the winter. Enjoy Michael.
"White Floyd meets black soul" is how I described it.I love the main bass part too - love to know who wrote the bass. Kiwanuku loves Pink Floyd...and Marvin etc

broooo this recording is insane! Pink floyd live at pompeii homage from the film crew
Michael Kiwanuka is such a good songwriter. Also, if you're into jam bands, I'd recommend checking out this band I found the other day called Aqueous. Been loving their tune "weight of the word"
Stay safe Michael! And keep on inspiring us :)

I second this recommendation
WOW !!! so great...such a great talent !!!
Your lighting and video quality is stunning!

You gotta check out his Love & Hate live session too.
So glad someone recommended this! Love this so much. Are we sure it wasnt a cuppy tea with him being british :D
I love this impromptu playing along with it! You should just start another channel where you just do impromptu playing over songs and instrumentals. I’d love to hear you play riffs along side the guitar In the song “marooned” by Pink Floyd.
Amazing group, Michael!
This song is just Stairway to Heaven epic in the way that it changes pace.
He is in between Sky (band) Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Santana and BB King all mixed into one.
Love the original so it's so great to see them remix it into this vibe.
Watching beautiful music being made!
React to The Final Frame by the same guy! There is a recording of it from the same live session, and Michael Kiwanuka's solo in that version is spectacular
Hello from Brazil. This sound is real outstanding.
Proud of the music creativity of black people.
