@@MONKMIKE I always wonder if at least one of the urban explorers cares to inform the local gas or electricity supplier about things like that. It might be fun to experience and watch the electricity and gas still turned on, but it's not doing anything good, costs everyone's money and is a risk for all kind of hazard.
That stove/griddle is electric, NOT gas. That "hose/gas line" you saw was the electrical conduit/cable. Also i saw a video of this place from another explorer a few months back that also found the stove but they turned it off, seems like someone turned it back on again sometime between that explorers visit and yours.

Those Riot Shields are Capture Shields it helps restrain inmates against a wall/floor. I didn't know those existed until now lol
Which makes it even more puzzling as to why it wasn't curved to the outside, as was stated on video...
@@JohnCompton1 Not sure what you’re saying. The shield is curved in a way to assist with directing prisoners.
@@JohnCompton1 they're curved away from the officer to pin a rioting inmate either against the wall or the floor.
I got to the same conclusion while watching the video, at 22:22 you can see a riot shield with "corrections" on it curved the other way around
Also if curved the other way, anything thrown at the guards could bounce behind the line of guards.
As to why the electricity is still on: In big commercial buildings, they don't actually disconnect the electricity, ever. If the tenant moves out or goes bankrupt, like a mall for instance, they simply read the meter and notate that as the "turn off meter reading" and then when a new tenant moves in, they read the meter again and notate that as the "turn on meter reading" and no one gets billed for the electricity between those two numbers, it's written off. Since this abandoned prison is right next to the new prison, it's probably still on the active account for that one anyway. And I wouldn't be surprised if the state gets a flat yearly rate for prisons, so that way the utility gets a guaranteed profit and doesn't actually have to read the meter every month.
What a waste. Here in the Philippines, if the establishment owners didn't bother paying electric bills within two months, the power would be cut off.

That is not true at all.. There are tons of stories on UA-cam of malls getting their power cut off.. Do u really think the electric company is gonna pay for electricity out of the goodness of their heart if it's a co-op? That is a government building. The taxpayers in that area are paying the electricity bill for that prison every single month
They should do that with residential property too then. Of course they don’t care about the little guy. Since it seems they can just waste energy.
Stove is %100 electric. That hose is a flexible conduit for electrical cords. Also no pilot or burners
I agree...A gas fired grill would have a small vent stack behind the cooking surface to direct fumes up toward the exhaust hood.
For real. Also, they would have smelled the gas.
@@AMiniki You would have smelled the burned gas and the room would be full of co2 making it hard to breath, but gas stoves only smell like gas when they have defective burners not burning the gas or if theres a leak.
to me that makes it worse since more energy wastage.

What is worse, a gas stove that has the potential explode by one spark if it has a gas leak and likelihood of suffocation to someone that comes into said room with a gas leak? Or an Electric Stove wasting energy? Hate to break it to you but if it was a gas stove, it would be wasting gas as well as the aforementioned problems above.
Absolutely bonkers to me that after all these years, it didnt occur to anybody to kill the utilities to this place. Definitely makes for an interesting video.

You can't just shut large areas off the grid like this when it was designed with this in mind.

Really wouldnt be of much use with metal around - would have a lot of artifacting in the Radiograph.

that x-ray machine in particular is a tooth one, for finding teeth that need fixed.
It's not for dentistry. Well, it can be used for that, but it's about the aperture. Small aperture for teeth. And a small aperture because you only need to see a little bit of their insides -Just a stomach or colon or bit of intestine. Also it prevents irradiating your patent too much and helps protect attending staff from irradiation (the inmate isn't going to be alone in the room) if the aperture is small. It's also the only thing that makes sense. They're not doing dentistry while someone's on the throne, are they, geniuses?

You probably should've turned that stove off or tip someone anonymously there is a still a gas stove on. That is a fire hazard waiting to happen.
Exactly my thought, everything else decayed already, that's incident waiting to happen. On other hand I understand someone might be even scared to turn it off, because who knows what could break if you touch something.

10:25 I'm a correctional officer and I can answer this, even though our shields in my facility are curved in a more standard way (convex), I have seen these concave shields before and I sometimes wish we had them too. They're curved that way to make it easier to hold someone up against a wall or on the ground, the shield kinda "hugs" the offender and it makes it harder for them to squeeze past when compared to a more traditional convex shield. I've always thought they looked a bit more unwieldy and less versatile than a standard shield but I've seen prisoners manage to slide off convex shields, usually requiring more than one officer to hold one inmate down for that reason. With these shields, one officer can theoretically hold down one inmate more securely and easily. Not that this is a big problem, because anytime these shields are deployed it's because there's a big code and tons of officers will be on deck with all the kit, including the dogs (in my supermax facility this is the case anyway, should also add I'm not in the US).
A little more about shields in a prison, shields are used 90% of the time not in riots (again, at least this is how it is in my country, full blown riots are very rare here), but instead when dealing with prisoners who are an identified hazard when it comes to spitting, weaponising bodily fluids, throwing scalding water (or boiled jam, that shits like prison napalm), or even just a prisoner who has a tendency to throw objects at us when aggravated. I was using one a few weeks ago to talk to a prisoner through the trap in his cell door, just because he was angry and he has thrown piss through the trap at guards before, so standard procedure for him is to lower his trap, place a shield in front of it, and talk to him that way. This is the most common use case for shields that I've experienced in my time as an officer. These concave shields would be a lot more effective when used in this way than a convex one as they'd direct objects (or bodily matter) back outwards, instead of off to the side and behind the officer holding it where it could possibly splash onto other bystanding officers.

we use the convex (rounded ones) for cell extractions and the regular flat ones for crowd control
and when doing a cell extraction we are going in 7 deep. one holding the shield, one person for each limb and then another recording so when we get sued its on camera that appropriate force was used. this is generally what we do in the USA
@@AlyssaSoftPaw Not too dissimilar from how we operate here, except when doing a cell extraction we only grab a shield if it's a certain classification of prisoner, typically we won't use a shield in mainstream, but in the high security units where I work we almost always will use one. It isn't policy, it's up to our sup's discretion (they'll say grab a shield 99.9% of the time). We go in as many officers deep as possible, but we are so understaffed that the number of officers that will be present can be pretty unreliable, especially on second watch, we just get as many hands on deck as are available at the time.

we are a trained team who get called for stuff like that. we go all over the state, last month i did a cell extraction for a facility 4 hours from mine since their cert team was off doing shakedowns in the capitol
tbh the only time we didn't use the shield for an extraction was when a minimum inmate barricaded himself in a vent and we had to pull him out.
No one can touch Proper People for realism. If a place is creepy, we're gonna feel it.

Oh and so will they, trampling through asbestos and moldy environments without respiratory equipment or even masks.
Like they remark how smelly that maintenance office was, saw how Moldy it is and still went in there and spent considerable time in it without masks or anything.
@@vidmasterK1 Yeah that’s always bothered me about them. They’re likely going to have some health issues down the road for sure. To our credit, so many of us warned them for quite a few years now.
Going without a respirator is cool and all until you’re diagnosed with a long-term breathing disorder.

5:24 Texas's power grid couldn't keep up with the demand during the big snowstorm yet this place still had power with everything still turned on. Absolutely appalling.
It has a lot to do with the prison being built into the grid and the grid being made to be able to support what is connected to it. Also, demand during a heavy snowstorm would easily be more than normal, every day demand.
@@Jeremy_Watson Sure it was more than normal demand, which is why in times like that only essential things are supposed to be powered to reduce the power demand on the electrical grid. Having a place like that running 24/7, especially during that time, is a lot of unnecessary power that could be used elsewhere. Even if it is directly tied to the grid, it is still possible to remove it. Would cost less overtime to do so than to leave it connected.
@@mrgw98 I don't think you understand what I meant. The backflow that would result from actually cutting all of that off the grid at once would then propose a different set of issues. It's not like everything is all on at once either. However, I do wonder what the plan is as far as properly shutting these abandoned places off and demolishing them.

@@Jeremy_Watson Ah, yeah I did misunderstand that. That said, I kind of was taking that into account though when I mentioned how it would save money in the long term. Up front, there would definitely have to be some changes to the grid, not sure how major or minor, to account for the disconnection. Also, I get that it can deter scrappers. Not as many people want to try and scrap when the line they are cutting might go zap.
I've never been in prison. But I would imagine having to take a dump in front of a random cellmate would be the 2nd worst part of being incarcerated.

In jail we always waited for everyone to go out in the day room. Put a blanket over the window. Only once did my bunky have to shit in front of me. I covered my head and faced the wall.
Take 1 leg completely out of your pants, people will want to get you when you are most vulnerable, with 1 leg out at least you can stand up and fight back without tripping over your pants. 👍
Working in the environmental remediation field for almost 30 years when you guys go to these places you should get checked once a year for lead and asbestos exposure. All that loose paint you guys are walking on the ground could have lead in it and you could be making it airborne. You should go to these places at least wear a respirator that is certified for lead or asbestos. Just a helpful tip. Oh! Also disposable suits . When you're done with them just leave them there..
They hardly ever wear masks, it's going to come back and haunt them at some point unfortunately
@@DimJongUn I know. I commented on another video a couple years ago saying something similar. I guess they don't care. I love their videos but they should buy some suits and respirators if they're going to go into these places. They also don't understand that airborne contaminants are microscopic. They could bring that stuff home on their clothes. And regular washing machines will not take that stuff out the fibers are embedded in the clothing. They should take an asbestos awareness course in their state where they live. Once they get the information they would understand.

honestly, and I hate saying this because a relative of mine just got out of surgery for cancer, I am always waiting for a video from these guys saying "'blank' has cancer". I hope they get lucky and nothing happens but I cringe every time they say "it smells so bad in here" an then walk into the room anyways or walk right into places that might have dead air.

@pce0513 Most definitely! All explorers should watch them. A couple more good ones are Urbex Hill (Cleveland Ohio area) and JPVideos (mostly Pennsylvania). Urbex is similar to Proper People but does it alone. JPVideos is different in that he's way more laid back. Both are well worth watching .
I worked as a sub-contractor at our states main prison and had to go into the old main prison building to scavenge parts to repair another building. The old main was shut down about eight years ago after a very bad riot where about six people were murdered. The building was vacated and just left their untouched. That prison was a very omius place knowing people violently died in the same place I was working.

The large crank that you were turning in the cell block attaches to a cable that runs along above the cells and switches the cells to different opening modes. Usually from mechanical or electrical open/close, individual manual door release where you can release a single door, to group manual release where all the cell doors are free sliding where you could walk up and pull each door open. That way, during a power loss or emergency, you can still open individual cells or all cells without power.
When I was 17 my dad decided I needed to be taught a lesson, I was introduced to Pentridge Prison, Coburg, Victoria Australia.
I probably needed a wake up, but drastic measures result in lifelong fear and loathing.
Established in 1858, Pentridge has witnessed a lot of injustice. And also held some nasty people at bay.
That's not the reason for my comment tho, this monument to British rule has been turned into a upscale community.
Bluestone cells have become town houses and wine cellars.... I have no words.

I’ve been past that prison a few times, I believe there is a shopping centre right next to it, with a bit of history about the prison.
My dad and I took our time to have a read before our movie started, it was interesting, I keep forgetting that I’m like 40 minutes away from it…not to mention the old mental asylum in Bundoora…sadly it’s not longer there but if you look it up on google you might get some info.
I love this channel. You guys are always so respectful to the properties you have visited. You never show the location of where you are, how you got in and you hide the identities of any staff/patient/inmates who would've been at that facility. I only wish other urban explorers did the same!
It's a double-edged sword for me. On the one hand I want to know what and where this place is - for no reason other than simple curiousity. On the other hand, I can respect keeping places anonymous to preserve them from vandals.

I can't believe the entire building isn't tagged up, awesome piece of history. I worked in original county jail in Chicago built in 1925 and closed in 2016 they knocked it down last year and found a lot of interesting items while in the process haha

It's still part of an active prison complex. Probably not many people want to go hang out in a place where there's law enforcement within spitting distance and being regularly patrolled. Plus I feel like stuff like graffiti and vandalism tends to happen at night, when you're hanging around with some chums, set some stuff on fire, drink some drinks, get your chill on, spray paint some stuff, break things.

@@vidmasterK1 - It was daytime, so a bit more light I don't think would be really noticed, and they were only on for a short time.
Somewhere theres a ex prisoner who had some of the worst years of their life watching a youtube video of the prison they were housed in being explored by 2 kids who are super excited to be in the building hahaha
Seeing those metal trays stacked so nicely made me really happy. That must have been a good person in charge of that area.
That was quite a kitchen, I'm not sure I've ever seen so many steam kettles in one place before. And if anyone reading this is wondering, no that stuff wouldn't be plastic these days, the trays were baking pans and the other pans held food and could have used in a steam table... I spent WAY too many years in the restaurant business!
Interesting to see the 2003-vintage (Windows XP sticker, roundy dark-grey plastic) Dell systems in the stack at 36:08. Dates this place in some semblance of operation FAR later than I thought it would be.
The wall scribblings seem to hint at around 1999-2000 is when the place closed, but those Dell systems obviously place the shutdown date after that....
Who's to say those aren't old computers from the newer prison buildings stashed there?

Looking at these aging walls is crazy. The outside shots looking up at stone... I wonder how many people stared up at that tower and those walls knowing that's the only outside view they will ever have again.
Fantastic place, it really has it all. The variations from era to era with the different blocks.. and the contrast in ages looking out of those windows at a modern parking lot filled with cars. I find it particularly interesting that the newer blocks have aged so much more than the older ones.
The older ones were built to last. Not so anymore.

That sounds more like a contactor going bad in that control box.
With many lights not working, and some glowing dimly, I would hunch that the electrical system has lost a leg of it's 3 phase system. This would cause the buzzing of a contactor directly related to power feed.
@@grandinosour I never thought of it that way luckily that place didn't have any 3 phase motor s going because back in the day 3 phase motor s were very sensitive to the loos of The 3 phase feed that was needed to keep them running properly but today's 3 phase motor s have a sensor that shut s them off when they don't have enough power going in to them

RHU is for Restricted Housing Unit, like Administrative Segregation for unruly prisoners who had rules infractions. The other one with the JHU was for Juveniles. I think you figured the rest out. Seriously, with electricity still going to this place I'd love there to be an electric chair you could test out. This joint reminds me of Massachusettes and Pennsylvania. Maine, the old Thomaston State Prison (MSP) was also a wild stop. It's nickname was _Tommytown_ and they hung the Warden in an archway leading to the rock quarry.

10:26 The riot shields are shaped that way because it's more effective in forming a line. If they curved toward the officer, there'd be a sort of "buttcrack" between each shield where someone could squeeze their way through and breach the line.
Plus if you wanted to sort of "grab and push" an inmate out of the way, having a concave shape would make that easier, I would think.

Given the cell graffiti, it looks like the prison was open in the mid 1990s… the Nirvana and 🚙 model was clearly the “grunge era”.
Skid row wasn’t a thing until 1989 so that would make sense…
@@stevenvanheel3932 well… the musical (and movie) Little Shop of Horrors had a song called “Skid Row” . The musical debuted in 1982. Sooooo I think skid row was a thing well before the 90s. In NYC, skid row was being cleaned up during the 90s.
I can tell I'm in my mid-40s now because the first thing I thought when they found the power and stove on was "I wonder how much more area residents are paying because either a) No one is paying those bills and thus customers are or b) The taxpayers are paying them and thus, customers are." 🤣

Those shields are for cell extractions and to help pin down inmates in other situations. Now days they make them with electric shock leads going thru them. Commonly known as Nova shields.

The buzzing you guys are hearing inside when you first enter is the transformers which control and distribute power throughout the building. that one seems like its going out, which could be detrimental to the building's power grid.

I was thinking this one would be great for a movie location.. they wouldn't have to rehab the whole place, just certain areas.

When you upload a video without saying where it is, I always scour the video for anything that identifies the place. I like to look up the history. I usually find it within 30 minutes. It's become a game for me. This one is elusive.

I found one clue, it had plenty of information to ID this place, took me about three time watching the video to find it, but I enjoy trying to find the location and then the history of the places too.

That prison was used in the 2009 Hollywood film Law Abiding Citizen with Jamie Foxx, but still I don't know why power would still be on!

the shields are curved like that cause a line of them would act as a plow than push and pin you forward while if they where the other way you would push thought them and be able to sneak through the blockade of them
Glad it's still standing to document. A lot of places like this are demolished, like the Old Lehigh County PA prison it was built in the late 1700 or early 1800s they needed more space so they tore it down to build a new cheaper one in its place that has been having issues sinking. It was rumored to have sealed tunnels under the original building it was made of a Red stone that looked like a Castle. I would think it was a Historic Landmark but the county wanted the hidden tunnel under it to transport prisoners underground to the nearby courthouse. What a loss 😢

Not to mention building it in the first place. Imagine all the materials and design that went into this place just to someday abandon it. Floor [polishers suggest it was kept up at one time.

I see so much pain. I think the massive amount of peeling paint also reflects the decades of pain it has witnessed. Incredible how small are the rooms and how packed they might have been at some point holding up to 5 at the same time. I don't see how anyone put in there for several years could come out and integrate back into normal society.

I agree. I think power plants have been beat to death on this channel but I love watching all their other videos

I really enjoyed your video. It makes me thank God for my freedom. I also especially loved seeing the electric fans in the basement and the old Westinghouse fan mounted on the wall in one of the rooms. I will be watching this video again.

Legit how many places across the world still have electricity and natural gas running to them even though they're abandoned? I'd think the electricity grid could be eased if sites like this were disconnected, not only is it a waste, it's dangerous. Nice exploration though, guys.
