Easy Fix: Problem with Half Double Crochet Rows

- Incorrect counting with half double crochet rows is easy to happen if the pattern is telling you that the ch 2 at the beginning of a row counts as a half double crochet. It looks wrong and it's easy to miss it. Even after nearly 40 years of crochet, I still screw it up. Here's my hack on how to fix that.

I've always done HDC this way....AND I put a stitch marker in first and last stitch as I go so I don't miss them! Straight edges!! Thanks for this, Mikey!

lacey I adore Mikey. Have you seen his pattern for the Toodie? When I saw him wearing it, I just knew I had to make it but when I printed the pattern, I felt that I was so out of my comfort zone, but watching his video helped me create 2 stitches I've never attempted before. It took awhile to finally "get it", but his instructions really help so much, and I got every stitch made and finally got to wear it a couple of times this winter. I got compliments on how pretty it is. After making that, I am determined to make more things but I've taken a break from it to do something else. I feel like a vacation is going to help me get that invisible join to work for me. I guess I got tired of ripping out rows of stitches to do it again and again.....I won't give up though.
IT's a common issue I think. I constantly screw it up.

I've been searching for how to turn without the unsightly holes and without inadvertently adding or decreasing stitches and this is the first video that actually helped me!! My edges are so so wonky because like you said, I wasn't paying attention, and missed a stitch at the end because it looked okay! Then I WAS paying attention and was inadvertently increasing because I was working into the first stitch w the chain two. I will stitchmark this row and go down and back to see the difference. Thanks for not just saying HERE DO THIS!! and rather showing what happens w each method. And thanks for not obstructing the view as well!!

Hugs&Kisses Mikey is so great at explaining things. He has a tutorial on how to make a "Toodie", and I loved what I saw when he put his on, so I attempted to start it but it took me more than a few days to understand how to make the rounds with the 3rd horizontal bar for the cowl portion. It took several videos, mostly with Mikey being the amazing helper but I made one for myself and I never thought I would because of the complexity of some of the stitches, but I stuck with it and finally created one for myself unless I choose to give it away to someone. Isn't it fun to crochet?

Tks this helps, also PLEASE make vid showing HDC and stitch in back loop only(BLO)- it too is confusing at ends & sometines those 3 loops appearing in HDC & I forget which is main “chain” and catch sideways when its a long chain that ends up rolling over a little, if that makes sense; also black yarn with HDC and BLO is hard, esp at ends. I’d really appreciate a video showing all of these in slow motion of course I know there’s a setting to slow things down also. Thank you for your help Mikey!

Oh my gosh thank you. I had to undo hours of work after I realized I had somehow added 15 stitches along the way. Then I restarted and made sure to count my stitches meticulously, only to find I was consistently missing one stitch at the end of each row! Hopefully, I can finish this blanket someday and make it a rectangle instead of an arch🤞

I always loved the way it looked but that hole!! Ugh!! And always missing that last stitch was so disheartening. With your little single on the ends makes it so much more enjoyable to do. I have always put an HDC in the 1st stitch. HDC is my favorite stitch, I know weird but DCs are too spindley and it takes a month of Sundays to Single for my taste. Great job explaining the fix.

Thank you Mikey! That wasn't even my problem. I'd instinctively been doing the single chain instead of the double, but as a long-time crocheter who is new to half-double crochet (yes, we do exist!) I was having difficulty as to where to place stitches along each row...underneath the "V" of a normal stitch, or into the...ahem....hole a bit lower? Watching your vid cleared that up nicely, and now I know I'm doing the right thing wiith single chain each row, as well as placing my stitches into their correct holes. Thanks for all you do!
This is great! I also do an alternate method for chain 3 as a double crochet at beginning of a row. Gets rid of that gap too. Nice straight edge.
I do too - I prefer stacked double crochets.

OMG thank you! This is how I did it apparently on accident 😂 then I tried a dc and got all confused and went back to hdc watching videos again and thought I was doing it way wrong.
Mikey, what you describe in this video of the half double crochet is EXACTLY what my left handed work looks like, just not as uniform or consistent yet. Doug

Doreen , I first began to learn when I was 8, and saw my mom doing it for the first time. I asked her to show me, and with a spare hook, and a scrap of yarn, I learned how to chain and single crochet. I've always been a tomboy, so after doing that little bit, I got bored and went outside to play. Fast forward to 1988 when I was expecting my first child. A coworker was also expecting and she was making the most beautiful afghan I'd ever seen. She told me to go to K-mart for what I needed, everything from a hook, pattern, and the 6 different colors of pastel yarn plus white. I was so excited to get home that night and get started. When I opened up the pattern, I realized that I was in foreign territory and just about started to cry but I didn't. I got help from several coworkers who crocheted on how to start, one of my older sisters was also helpful, so I was on my way until I came to a completely different set of stitches and again I needed help. Long story short, I made some changes of my own just because I didn't know how to make granny squares which I know how to do now. When I finally finished the blanket, I was so proud of myself. I knew it wasn't perfect, but I had created something that I didn't think I could do. My son loved his blanket. He actually had one my sister made for him and he loved that one also, and until he was 4, he carried them both with him, and he would hold my blanket right to his nose but I don't know why. He eventually found how to undo the center of the blanket, and made the hole big enough that he could wear it as a poncho. We learned by the time he was 18 months that we didn't dare leave the house without his blankies. I still have what's left of that blanket, be it faded from the many washings it got in roughly 4 years, I can't bring myself to throw it away. In 2014, I learned that I was going to be a grandmother, and I knew what I was going to make, but this time I was going to learn all of the stitches to make it correctly and I DID!! It was my gift to our first granddaughter. Three years later, the news of another granddaughter came, and this time, our daughter-in-law had in mind the colors she wanted to use for the babies room and accessories, which included the colors I used for her blanket-the same pattern, and I didn't quite get it done in time, but she loved that one also. Three years later and getting to month 7, we finally found out we were going to have a grandson, and we were visiting them in Oklahoma, (we live in Iowa), so the very next morning, I made my husband take me to Hobby Lobby where I purchased all the colors of yarn I was going to use for his blanket. It was 6 different shades of blue with white of course. It was so beautiful, and I was so proud of myself, but I had really gotten the bug to keep crocheting and got an idea from when our 2nd granddaughter spent 3 weeks in the NICU because she arrived early, I learned that at that children's hospital, they relied on donations of beanies for babies, mostly for preemies, but also usual sizes of babies, and before the pandemic hit, I decided I was going to start making beanies for the wonderful children's hospital that we have. Because COVID restrictions are still going on, I still haven't gotten to donate them. I have over 200 of them, then I made a curly bookworm, a bookmark which I thought would be nice for older kids in the hospital who enjoyed reading. I probably have well over 100 of those made, and now I'm working on Chemo caps for cancer patients who've lost their hair. I'm having difficulty with these because I want an invisible join as I go from one round to the next, and it's videos like this that have helped me not only with the invisible join, but also with scarves which I made for all of my nieces and nephews for Christmas 2 years ago. I have so much yarn and I doubt I will ever get it all used, but I will try. I'm so sorry for the book, I just wanted you to know that you aren't the only "senior" on here. Best of luck to you!!!
