Patti LaBelle & The Bluebells - Somewhere Over the Rainbow - 1966 on THE BEAT, the ALL BLACK talent pop music show hosted by legendary DJ "Hoss" Allen
What a piece of history! Otis Redding introducing a young Patti Labelle being backed up by Cindy Birdsong before she joined the Supremes.
Amazing!!!!!😊
Well duh of course she was young we all were young. SMDH
Yes Right!!!! That was some shit to know she/they have always been in vocal "supreme :....
The American Storyteller : Patti and the Bluebelles had a hit before Aretha, in 1960.
Pattie never sings a song the same, she is very unique in that way. I love this women!
Dionne Warwick does the same thing.
R.I.P. Otis Redding & Sarah Dash 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Wow! Patti Labelle's voice could stop a tidal wave! Look at the gorgeous Bluebells with Cindy Birdsong pre Supreme days!
Patti is introduced by Otis Redding, the one time he stood in for Hoss Allen.
Such a beautiful and unique voice.. When you hear her sing. you know who she is... That's amazing.
22 year old Ms. Patti Labelle, the greatest to ever do the dang thang, yes I said the greatest🙌🏿😉👌🏿The true Queen is Ms. Patti Labelle👑 #Legendary🌷💕
PREACH AMEN!! Aratha Franklin Are The Queen Of Soul 👑.. But Momma Patti Are The God Mother Of Soul 🔥 👑.. God Gave Her That Powerful Gospel Voice - For A Reason 👍 👍.. The Same Way That He Gave To Aretha Franklin.. Nobody Can't Take That Powerful Voice Away From Momma Patti.. Mrs. Patti LaBelle 🎼 🎼.
Cindy Birdsong looking so beautiful here.
In the early 60s , Patti would have to stand 10 feet behind microphone for finale in order not to shatter it!!!
Y’all had to be there!!!
Thanks!!!
OMG. how fabulous is this clip of the amazing Patti Labelle with Sarah, Nona and the supreme Cindy Birdsong! Them girls can SAAANNG!
I'm sure many were shocked when they transformed to LaBelle
They look and sound amazing. Right here u can see where all the mess started about Cindy and Flo looking alike. The height, curves, complexion and the way they move.
At the Apollo they’d sing this as their finale. You could here a pin drop!
Hinderless : I saw these singers, the original group, at the Apollo for many years, when I was a teenager!
Pattie music may not have got the respect it deserves but I respect patti on a much more level than other artist from back then
How fabulous is this clip? It features Otis Redding, the original Bar-Kays (the band), and the awesomeness of Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendryx, Sarah Dash, and Cindy Birdsong, otherwise known as the Bluebelles! Too much, too much!
the voice is perfect she could anyone under the table that's what you call talent new singer should learn
Duh stupid
+Simi Stop LoL double duh
mrspence spence, she was born with it, check out-down the Isles.
Forever!
I don they she put aretha under the table especially in that era lol
One of the greatest girl groups , Patti Labelle and The Blue Bells.
Patti always does her thing. The ending gets me every time, no matter what version she is singing.
Great performance by Ms. Labelle and her Bluebelles.
Beautiful dark chocolate
Cindy has such class and femeninity about her that adds to both groups she belonged to
I didn't know Patti Labelled been around that long.I love the idea that she started singing Jazz as she matured and got older. Listening to BEL HOMAGE gave me goosebumps.♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Yea she didn’t really get real big until she went solo. By the eighties rolled around, she was a household name in the black community.
YESS STREAM BELL HOMAGE
I STAN lol
Nora Neal: Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles were a “household” name not just within the African American community, but all over New York City.
Patti LaBelle is a true icon
I first heard of Patti & Bluebelles when their first record, I Sold My Heart to the Jumkman in 1960. They were a great R&B act, who later did an LP with pop standards in their Soulful way.
only Patti Labelle can give me chill bumps and tears. what magnificent voice.....!!!!
+Ceasar carcus dude u got taste too
Goosebumps every time! RIP Sarah Dash!
Patti already performing those animated moves she’d later perfect into her act.
Scream Patti! SCREAM!!!!
Damn this shouldabeen in the Wiz, this looks like it could have been shot in the Emerald City itself!
wait why is that actually a good idea, maybe it should be implemented during while dorothts cleaning, like wonder wonder why which was cut in 1975, then added back for the 1984 revival tour. Expect this when I revive the wiz on broadway. Dont know how long because im 13 lol but ill get there, its my all time goal.
I LOVE ME SOME Patti LaBelle.....I Have Her Albums ....Thank U Mom For Giving Me Real Music To Jam To & Still Do!!!!!!
Real singing.
Geez! I remember seeing this on television as a little kid in the South Bronx back in 1966 and thinking, why aren't they wearing dresses like the Supremes? LOL! They were more than unique!
I would love to see this entire program
You can! found it here: ua-cam.com/video/CNftYFLQgS4/v-deo.html
Pattis voice and style evolution over time is so interesting because this cadence and vocal style is super strange to hear Patti sing in maybe because it was the 60s and she was new to the scene she was holding back vocally
True legends never dies..we just get old & rejuvenate!
in those day they were BIG in Europe, London be not tricked
I really wish Florence had moved to London, I bet we would have taken much better care of her then those incompetent clowns at ABC
Her voice was darker and softer when she was younger. Compared to later years when her voice is brighter and louder.
I never knew where Cindy Birdsong fit in this group because Nona, Sara, and Patti had amazing singing talent.
I remember her at Latin Casino what a show !!
Absolutely beautiful
Go Patti LaBelle And The Bluebells.. With Ottis Redding Intro 🌟 🔥 🌟 🔥.
This performance is even better than the one with the red dresses.
strongly disagree
There’s no way
I prefer this one over the red dress one
Patti is my girl and this performance gave me chills. This shows that she has just as much power, control, tone as Aretha had back then. Too bad she didn't get the notoriety she deserved.
I know right
+Simi Stop Right. She actually cried in an interview one time because her music rarely hit the Hot 100 although she would give it her all.
Patti Labelle and Bluebells hardly ever hit the top 100 because the DJ's would rarely if ever play their songs on mainstream radio. Growing up in Los Angeles in the 1960's, I never ever heard one Patti Labelle and the Bluebells record on the radio. DJ's and radio programmers have to give your music some exposure if the general public is to ever become aware of you. It is unfortunate that I never got to hear any of the Patti and the Bluebelles records on the radio upon their initial release as they certainly are terrific sounding as I listen to these recordings today.
JACK ANTHONY I don't know about other states but I grew up on Long Island in New York. I recall back in the sixties, hearing certain singles by the Bluebelles played on some local radio stations on a regular basis but never understood why those recordings did not become huge hits. However 2 or 3 of those recordings did become top 40 hits nationally in 1963/64. I think the thing that worked most in favor of the group was their exceptional talent. I saw them many times live and believe me when I say no group male or female came close to them vocally
Drummer C Yes you are correct. I have since read that Patti Labelle and the Bluebelles did get radio airplay and record sales on the East coast which earned the group top 40 positions on the national top 100. However, in order to be in the top 10 the song must reach all of the markets in every part of the nation.
So beautiful ❤
THAT'S WHAT YOU CALL THROATAGE! She sang that from her CRAW.
Her what? I don't get you country people sometime
From her craw, that is so country. I love 💕 it.
😂😂😂
@@simistop3964 💀💀💀
@simistop3964😂😂😂🎉🎉😢😢😮😮😮😮😅
Young DIVAS
future legends!
This is an amazing clip. I need this for my collection. Ms. Patti killed it!
Only until like a few months ago did I realize that Patti Labelle went back to the 60's, if not 50's,. I can't say that I know of her songs from then.
WOW PHENOMENAL PHENOMENAL 🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️🎉
Those outfits were MEAN!!!!! 💚💚💚💚💚💚💚
Lol She Looks So Different & Sounds So Different and Good
I love Pattie❤❤❤
The times of yesterday are gone .and the music of today will fad away as quickly as tomorrow.
Fantastic - and such clear video for so long ago. Thanks so much for posting
1 of all time
FANASTIC
TREMENDOUS!
BRAVO !!!!!!!!!
So Great!!
Impresionante patti,eres una gran diva.
Beautiful
God ALREADY KNEW what he created Patti for and intended for Patti to do.❤❤
this here shhh aint new to miss Patti ..she's been at this over the rainbow fab...singing 4 years..its true practice sure does make perfect b/c in the later years she still tore this song up!!! Dorothy would be oh-sooo proud !!
U better sing patti
One of those girls is Cindy who was with the suprems ,she was soo cute
Awesome!
Patti could always chirp!
I didn't know Cindy birdsong was an original member of the bluebells before she ditched them. I always thought they were a trio. I wasn't born yet when they started.
She was 21 or 22 years old🙀Wow
Didn't know Patti had been singing this song even back in her Bluebells days. I think that's Cindy Birdsong in the middle and Sarah Dash next to Patti, but is that Nona at the other end? Cindy Birdsong really resembled Florence Ballard, a lot.
awesome
Give it up for the bluebell s!!!!! Harmonies! !!! if you get a chance to hear then!! tooi. lol!!!
imagine still touring from 1960-2023 my god. The things this lady has seen.
Wow
HOLLYWOOD !!!!!!!
She would have been about 21 here, wow...
Cindy birdsong was a key element in battery Park background Harmony I heard the song without her and it was not the same but they are great and they evolved into LaBelle
same..
Listen to Cindy's great soprano! You never heard it with the Supremes! That was a shame!!!!!!
That's actually Sarah Dash (the one on Cindy's right) singing soprano she was the group's soprano but Cindy is holding down the melody singing the middle harmony and she sounds real strong here compared to how quiet she sounds in The Supremes performances
@@Musicblue22 Cindy was always the Mezzo Soprano and her voice fell right in between the late, great Sarah "Silver Throat" Dash and Nona Hendryx. Unfortunately when she became a Supreme, her vocal part (on the released songs) were sung by Marlene Barrow of the Andantes. However on the live specials with the Temptations and on songs that were album "fillers" (such as Sunny Boy, Then, and Will This Be The Day), her voice shines. The real sweetness of her voice was not allowed to shine until 1970, when Jean joined the group.
This Clip Is The Definitely, The Beginning For Patti; Check Out Cindy Birdsong Before She Join The Supremes.
THERS IS A VERSION OF THIS SONG THEY PLAY AT STARBUCKS WHERE I USED TO WORK I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND IT I CANT NOT FOR SOME REASON.
Just saw her on the view. She said she had a nose job...I'm glad she didn't take too much off...she knew whrny to stop!!! Nose looks good!!!
I can see why Cindy was chosen to be a Supreme, Gordy knew something special was in her, she was very similar to Flo if you squint, and he could cripple the Supreme's big rival band by poaching one of their singers. The man was cuthroat as the day is long but damn if his decisions did not pay off.
Cindy's one of my favourite Supremes so I want to check out more of the Blue Belles so I can hear her shine in a way she didn't get to as a Supreme.
But the did have good material - listen to Cool Water, All or Nothing, Dreamer, I'm still waiting. They didn't have a good record label who could promote them and get their music played on national level. Ever hear of Parkway Records or Newton Records lol. They did get signed to Atlantic Records the home of Aretha Franklin but Atlantic didn't do them any justice. Hmmm, I wonder why lol.
Violet Valentine: I definitely do not think the Bluebells were competition for The Supremes. After the summer of '64, The Supremes were at a totally different level of success. Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles had peaked in the early sixties with _I sold my heart to the junkman,_ though they would always be a popular touring act on the chitlin circuit because they were so good.
I recently watched some of Cindy's interviews from the 1980s and 90s. She had some really interesting things to say, and I read that she wrote a book around that time that she could not get published due to the book's lack of negativity. But seriously, that would not be something anyone would expect from Cindy.
One of the most interesting things I learned was that Cindy considered Florence to be her best friend in The Supremes, ironic considering that Cindy ended up being Florence's replacement. Cindy said that when she saw Dreamgirls, she was actually in tears during _and I'm telling you I'm not going,_ because she actually saw that play out live.
Motown thought they was getting something. Sarah was the other soprano
Patti actually let the Belles sing, instead of just oohs and aahs!
Patti it even way back when #GoGirl
When this song was popular her name was Patsy Holt.
So this must've been filmed years after it was a hit.
She still use Patsy Holt, her stage name which is as of today is Patti LaBelle two differences
Did you know that Patti's real last name is "Holt". Wouldn't it be something if it were discovered that she was related to Lester Holt from The NBC News.
no wonder Cindy was chosen as a Supreme. she really stands out.
No she was stolen and yeah she did stand out as a trader
She also more closely resembled Flo
Darius Wilder Diana stole Cindy Birdsong from From the bluebells and still cound out sing Patti Labelle
Ronald Johnson
Diana did not "steal" anyone or anything. Berry Gordy recruited and signed Cindy Birdsong to Motown as a Supreme. And, to be fair to both artists, Patti and Diana are two different stylists. I think, though, that few would agree that Diana -- or anyone, for that matter -- could "out sing" Patti. Motown Returns to the Apollo is proof of that.
She was chosen for her look.
RIP Otis Redding
Cindy Birdsong you will become a SUPREME!!🥰🥰🥰😘
A traitor Superstar
Cindy Birdsong is a Benedict Arnold
Wow Cindy looks like flo Ballard here lol
Cindy birdsong before she was a supreme
she was a backup singer for Patti, why she go and backup singer for Diana
+Jeremy Collins, at the time, the Supremes were MUCH BIGGER group...world renown. As well as Patti is known now, the Bluebelles didn't compare back then.
+doubledelta8085 ....And the Bluebelles would sing them Off the stage out the building and on to the curb.....#facts
Caj Catt back then Patti Labelle had soul and she still does today, Diana could hit a high note, but not like Patti
According to Cindy the decider was her mother saying "Join the Supremes Cindy, you will never have a chance like this again"
Any Reunion footage of all of these lovely ladies together
The Bluebelles reunited at least once that I know of when they won an R&B award, but I can’t remember who honored them. They sang “You’ll Never Walk Alone”. I never saw footage, but I have seen pics.
@@kpitt1204 with cindy??
THEY COULD SING, JUST DIDN'T HAVE GOOD MATERIAL BACK IN THE DAY, I DIDN'T LIKE THEM UNTIL THEY CAME OUT WITH LADY MAR. THEN THAT SET THE PATTERN FOR THEM, GOOD GROUP.
Who is that trumpet player from the right side???
My grandad
Thx
Anybody body know where / when this performance is?
dreamkane This performance is from 1966 from a show called The Beat that was hosted by Mr.Hoss Allen. The Beat can be purchased on DVD’s from Amazon Prime or Ebay.

You are totally lost and you think she only have two hit songs you really need to Google her while you trying to be ignorant smart ass!
Cindy Birdsong escaped as soon as humanly possible 😂😂
She was a coward for leaving and NOT telling them!
