Just wanted to add a quick follow-up comment and say this procedure completely solved all our rattling issues. Hasn’t done it since I made this video!
I just wanted to say THANK YOU for posting this video. We love our CX-5 but have listened to that irritating rattle for 2 1/2 years. We have tried over and over to find out where it was coming from without success. I ran across this video when hunting for something else. I am convinced it was a “God thing” that I happened to see it. Thanks again. I was able to fix it in 30 minutes and it is so nice to drive in silence.
Brother…. you’re a saint! We had body work done on our rear hatch 3 years ago and our CX-5 started rattling. Depending on how hot or cold it is outside, that would dictate how obnoxious the rattle was. I took it back to the body shop 3 times figuring they did something to it but they couldn’t find anything. I sat in the back and the noise is from up high in the hatch…. so I thought maybe it was the rear hatch strut on the passenger side but it was tight. THIS has got to be the problem! I’m going to check it out tomorrow and if this works…. I’ll be the guy doing the Happy Dance on my block tomorrow. That rattle sounds like someone left a bloody 10mm socket in the door. It’s bloody aggravating when driving and makes my car feel like a cheap piece of garbage! Lol

I think I have one of those four nuts rattling around in the lower part of my tailgate.
Same here. One fell off and another was really loose.
What size are the screw nuts? Some of mine fell off
I replaced my with the nuts that have the rubber inside for a tighter grip. I will look at the size for them and get back to you tomorrow, if you still needed this info!
