    The fact that Dave Ghrol gives credit where credit is due...like how he got some of his ideas from Funk drummers like Tony Thompson and the Gap Band

    Dave’s patterns on Killing Joke’s 2003 album are his pinnacle. Particularly: The Death & Resurrection Show, Total Invasion, Asteroid, Zennon.

      The House That Pain Built. If you don’t know the Killing Joke’s 2003 album, you’re in for a treat. Dave realized his drumming vision there. Here’s Dave himself in the studio:

      The whole front half of that Killing Joke album is absolutely killer. The beat in Implant from that album is my second favorite Grohl beat after Nirvana’s Milk It. Implant just pummels the whole way through in a way that sounds easier to play than it actually is.

    Does anyone know who Steve Jordan is? If you don't, you should. When Smells like teen Spirit came out, Steve commented, that Dave is a funky drummer. Steve is known for having a killer groove, and he had great chops when he was younger.
    Prince invited Dave to jam and loved his heavy foot.
    Tom Petty was a fan too.

    You missed the genius part of the Teen Spirit groove: Dave lays back on the crash at the start of the bar *a lot*, giving it a heavy punchy vibe that is very hard to replicate consistently! That's why it never sounds quite right when other drummers play it!!

    • @DimitriFantini
      @DimitriFantini  23 дні тому +2

      fair enough! My default way of playing in the studio is to make sure the kick or snare hits BEFORE the crash (cymbals sound bad when they hit the compressor first) so I honestly didn't think to mention it.

      @DimitriFantini I wasn't really criticising, it's just that a lot of people miss that about the groove and it's very clever of Dave 😊. Love your channel by the way, it's really helped my playing a lot!

    Hooray! This is so helpful. I was waiting for more Dave Grohl content. I'm really impressed with the move that goes from snare to low tom via a hand flick. Really nice visual of German/American to French.

    Great video!
    I play over the whole Songs for the Deaf album to see how rusty I am, generally after not having played for some days... Sometimes it beats my ass, sometimes I pull it out.
    It makes you work on so many things: flams, singles, shuffle time, kick doubles, odd time signatures, power AND finesse

  • @thomasmansell5610

    Dave actually didn't write the snare roll and verses in a song for the dead. Its pretty much copied exactly from the song "slip it in" by black flag.
    Its still an amazing song tho.

    Bravo on the video, however I wish more people would acknowledge his drumming on his own albums (first three FF albums) more. Everyone always overlooks them for some reason and IMO that's where his best drumming is. QOTSA never did a thing for me other than his drumming. Not a Josh Homme fan. What about his drumming on Probot or the 1992 demo Late! Pocketwatch?

    You were right the first time, Dave is an average drummer at best. The only impressive thing is the opening of Queens of the Stone Age. However, for all new drummers, you don't have to play like Uncle Neil Peart to make a living as a drummer.

    • @NeCtRiCkS
      @NeCtRiCkS 27 днів тому +1

      Exactly. He's good, but very far from being among the best players.
      If we take the "best drummer" criteria Matt Gartska talked about a few weeks ago, Dave wouldn't ever be quoted, no matter the genre.
