Frankie Laine - Early Video of "Jezebel"

  • This was taken from one of Frankie's early TV appearences. I read that Frankie didn't get the credit he should have because other singers didn't cover his songs. Well they didn't because the couldn't.

One thing I love about this video is the utter confidence that Laine exudes during the performance. He's at the top of his game and he knows it. Listen to that final "Je - e - ze - e - be e e e el." Pavarotti couldn't have done it better.

Even though he sold millions of records ___ had a hit tv show __made many guest appearances ___ I still feel he was underrated as a vocalist. He was and is a wonderful vocalist .

Frankie was one of a kind, no one sounded like him and no one sang like him. Many tried but just couldn't bring it off. There will never be another like him.

I first heard this song in 1964 when I was five. My dad had the 45 with it on and he would play for me a couple times a week. So I listen to remind me of my parents who are now with God and Frankie.

How bizarre. I just googled the words of this song (the ones I could remember) because my father used to play this as well when I was maybe 6-7 yrs old ..early 60s ... and it pops into my head as an ear worm every now and then and I finally decided I want to hear the whole song and learn who sang it. Brings back happy memories of my dad for me.

Frankie Elaine has voice and style that NO one can duplicated or compare to. He is a ONCE in a
Life time ALL Time Classic Entertainer and Singer that will
Always Be Remembered and Admired by His Fans. I became a Frankie Elaine fan as a young child and today at age 67 I remain one of his faithful fans - I do regret that I never had the chance to see him perform in person. Thank you Frankie for all the years of such awesome entertainment and may you rest in eternal happiness & peace with God.

You are so right. Frankie didn't have the most beautiful voice, but what he had was a strong manly voice with lots of style and emotion That few back then and none today could come close too. When Frankie sung no one had to tell you who was singing. There will never be another like him.

He was my Dad's favorite singer and this was his song. He died when I was very young so I never knew him but he wrote about him in the letters he sent to my Mother. I met some men stationed with him over 50 years prior and they told me he sang Frankie's songs while he worked in the motor pool. I wrote and conversed with Frankie before he died. He was so thankful that he had such an impact on my Father. I will always love this song as it tells a very special story in my life of two special men.

there you have it backwards, the song was writen in 1951 by wayne Shanklin who gave it to Frankie wanting him to record it. which he did as his first hit at Columbia. In 1952 him and his wife Nan went to Paris and had dinner with Edith Piaf at the night club where she was performing. Edith got up and sang Jezebel with new French wording later she recorded it.

Yes I was born in 1938 and I became a Frankie Laine fan the year that you were born. As a 10 year old boy songs like "Mule Train", Cry Of The Wild Goose" set my musical taste. Over the next few years the likes of "Black Lace", "Jezebel" "Humming Bird" and "Your Cheatin' Heart" set this teanager's taste in music for ever. Then came Rock N' Roll what a bummer.

stomped his feet and moved to the beat. That is why they gave him the nickname of
"Mr Rhythm". There will never be another like him.

Yes I grew up with the British Invasion, an era that produced a great variety of songs. An example is Herman's Hermits doing their own take on "Jezebel". And look how The Beatles did unusual covers like "Till There Was You" from The Music Man. Bands from that era sometimes did songs not associated with Rock and roll.
