I expected you guys to talk about that scene where Ranveer is asked by Rahul Bose about his educational qualification and he proudly responds that he is in his final year. Rahul switches to English to talk to his daughter and asks whether she wants to be on same level as him. Ranveer's proud smile turns upside down. I have not seen such a strong moment in Hindi movies for a long time.
Also, Alia telling Ranveer that she has to be daring as she aspires to achieve a lot and has to face a lot of opposition doing the same. You almost talked about these scenes, and didn't.
There are so many moments like that another one is my favourite when Murad was driving that girl back from the pub and she was crying. He didn't even console her or made her feel better and the Doorie poem with perfect lyrics describing the situation played in the background
bhai I missed it....was that rahul bose in that scene ?
shekhar thakran Great notice brother👍👏
That was such a powerful scene! Loved how this movie showed the class divide ...
That actually reminded me of "Remains of the day" and "white tiger". Very similar scenes.
Guys I can't believe you guys didn't even talk about Vijay Varma aka Moeen. He was phenomenal to say the least.
I'm happy that Sucharits spoke about him in her review.
Agree. Easily one of the best in the movie - his eyes and expressions are amazing.
thanks ...for mentioning the guy ...he was amazing in the movie.
Just to mention my thoughts on SKY character which is termed as useless by many viewers... Kalki kind off played a real life person Rajakumari, who has collaborated with Devine, reaching to him after watching a UA-cam video. If you guys have noticed, Murad also uses the word "Rajkumari" for Sky, when they took him for vandalising. Also I like to mention that.. Rajkumai herself has also been casted in the movie, as the female judge in the rap-battle audition.
Omg you too noticed! I was just going to write about it...great job👏
Great notice brother.
@@ponderingmind7861 You noticed it also??? Wow man
@@bumba9017 Thank you... I always try to know about character to find the reason why he or she is there!!

School for me was I think 5 years back and I'd totally forgotten about how board exams start right now and how I would've probably missed this in the theatre. 😂
@@vatsalsinghania416 Exactly! If I had boards and wasn't allowed to watch Gully Boy I would've been devastated
Mai to phir bhi dekhega
I don't think gully boy is apolitical, zoya is extremely powerful in showing subtle nuances ...Whether it is patriarchy, class structure, religion, azadi was played when the cars being stolen is extremely significant where it the lyrics criticise many elite classes'.
Edit: kalki's scene where she paints brown and beautiful is also a political comment on ingrained beauty conventions in india
Also, in the last when a woman with a thali puts Tilak on murad's face. In the polarised times of today, even showing compassion between hindus and muslims is massively political. Man I love Zoya so much!
@@snehaaggarwal7256 very true, I get goosburmb when that Tilak happened, means where there is no such plot going but some how they jumped on that was amazing
I think kalki's character was important since she helped ranveer to look at the upper class world from inside and being a part of it, which he didn't explored while filling up at driver's job. Also to get in the house of kalki and the bathroom scene where he measures it. It wouldn't have been possible in the film if kalki's character wasn't there. I feel a full justice to her character has been given as well .
ankit saraf I agree totally...also when Murad asked her, “why do you like me”...or something like that because he couldn’t understood why someone like her would like someone like him ...she told him he’s an artist and that’s what mattered ...in a way she gave him(rightly or wrongly) on some level...legitimacy as a musician/rapper.
Also it is biographical because RajaKumari (Indian artist from the USA) did contact Devine through UA-cam and they collaborated on songs...
Kalki/Sky definitely worked for me in the narrative
The bathroom measuring scene at Kalki’s house was one of the most significant scenes of the movie done in silence. Haven’t sent anything like that in movies before yet it’s such a realistic scene that shows Ranveer’s eyes opening of what the upper class actually means which in turn motivated him to work even harder to get his own place for his mom.
Agreed. Idk why her character is deemed useless
I’ll like to sincerely thank Zoya for showing some scenes which were so hard hitting for me. One- where Alia cries and painfully says I just go to medical college, clinic and home that’s my life, I also want to go out, party and wear lipstick. Second- where Kalki and everyone go about painting graffiti and paint the fair and lovely add “brown is beautiful”
Thank you 🙏🏼
Guys this is their job. Everyone is extremely horrified and we all want revenge but have people stopped going to offices and work places due to the attack? No right so this is also their job and they have to keep doing it. People should understand
They could've given a minute to Manikarnika or the attacks, either way it sounded a bit myopic....
in agra yesterday all the buisness centres, markets, shops etc were all closed. So yes people stopped going to offices yesterday.
Sorry ma'am
VERY WELL SAID!
@@somrawat1161 well yesterday is over. See i am not justifying them i just stated a fact.😓
On my 2nd viewing, I got really excited noticing Divine intoroducing Ranveer before his last performance. Was a nice moment, and also reminded me of the real Jordan Belfort introducing Leo at the end of Wolf of Wall Street
I am not a cinema expert but I could be sitting at this table with these guys being super excited like they are. Because it's been so long, so long that a "Bollywood" film has been so on point, so long since Zoya gave her best, sooooooooo long since I saw Ranveer show how brilliantly capable he is that he is way beyond this crazy loud guy that he showed the world that an actor can be possessed by a character in a way that we see no trace of the actor himself. Am feeling so proud of this film because these people I feel have been mine. Even the rappers whome I got to know about very recently but as soon as I heard Naezy at the very beginning I was super happy and proud, when I saw the names of Naezy and divine on screen, every time arl real rapper came on screen, when they sang 'asli pane ko tu ane de' I felt immensely proud of all these hardworking artists who are all finally getting the name and fame they deserve.
P.S. after this I would not accept anything mediocre from Ranveer Singh I hope he makes better choices
Thank you for saying that cricketers or stars don't owe us anything, that is their job, they act, they get paid and if people like it they watch or they don't. As a person if they wanna do something for the society or country it's a different story, and people are so busy asking and accusing others about what have they done after the attack but have they thought what have i done other than sitting somewhere trolling actors, actresses or a celebrity !!!! Also posting something on social media doesn't make someone a good human. Action speaks louder than words and whatever they do for the society or the country doesn't have to be on social media. If a celebrity posts something people troll them saying it's a PR stunt and if they don't they accuse them 🤦
Many jobless keyboard warriors need to see this.
Someone who has a brain finally. Done with people pretending like they care the most about what happened.
First they talk about the how bad they felt from the killing of soldiers and then suggest a fucking war where 1000s might die
If I cant do anything good for my country, the least I can do is shut up and not pretend like I can feel the pain of people directly involved with the incident
These dumb people are not depressed. They want likes on their comments and Pakistani people to reply so they can discuss their family history together(ma behan ki galiya dena ek dusre ko)
Personally I could take a few more rap battles. I loved all of them
I found the new "azadi" track on UA-cam funny. One of the news portals that went all out trying to implicate Kanhaiya Kumar as anti-national was Zee News and the original Dub Sharma track came out in support of Kanhaiya Kumar. The original version even had the student slogans. Seeing the new song release under Zee Music label really made me chuckle. I was like "the song came a full circle" lol.
😂😂😂😂 Bhai, I almost didn't think that way. WoW.
Thanks.
Exactly what I noticed earlier and found it very ironic, hence I think now it's very clear that it's all about making money one way or another. They don't care about patriotism or anything as such. Peace✌️
We want lootera review .. This is not just a film but a masterpiece ..Ranveer's performance in this film was legendary. It is a loss that the public can not appreciate this film..Because many of them do not know much about it ..please guys please

I'm really crushing on Rahul! His understanding of the movie is amazing. His take on the apolitical bit was mind blowing.
Can't recall last time 3 critics sitting together and having such an in-depth and passionate conversation about a movie. And its so hard to find everyone appreciate a movie these days, gully boy certainly is one. Even though some people are finding this movie slow or boring. I am sure they couldn't appreciate tamasha either !!
Tamasha is NOWHERE close to gully boy.
@@snehaaggarwal7256 both movies are completely different, but in both you have to read a lot in between the lines to appreciate its worth.
That is what I meant.
It’s been so long since I’ve seen people talk so passionately about a movie. Hope we see more gems like Gully Boy
Juz came back from theatre... It's awesome.... Luved Luved Luved d movie....
The dynamics between Ranveer Singh and Vijay Raaz is so good in the movie, there are two scenes of them going to mosque, Murad walks behind his father and Vijay Raaz looks dominating over Ranveer, despite ranveer looking strong.
sucharita looks a lot to the symbolic factors in the film 😊 , like the house has a window, four walls.. nice.
His name is Emiway ...the one rapper Rahul was talking about who was in the final.
or is he talking about Divine maybe?
i thought bout DIVINE
He was Talking about DIVINE.
Dominator Harsh the movie is inspired from his life
So they must know divine already
People need to appreciate such films so that Bollywood can improve upon its story telling and build complex character arcs. Most of our movies are so one dimensional that one movie like Gully Boy bring glow in our faces. We need more such movies. Remember we cant make CGI heavy expensive films like hollywood but our film industry is old enough to be at least on par in story telling.
As a fan of Ranver Singh, I can not be more proud than I am now..With each film I see him develop from his abilities as an actor .. He is good in the selection of his roles and also good in presenting these roles to the audience in a way that does not compete with him any actors , whether the seniors or those of his generation..he is The most talented and versatile actor in Bollywood....hard work really paid off and ranveer is a good human and brilliant actor ..keep it up ..you naild it 👏👏👏👏👏Thank you Zoya for this masterpiece❤ .. Waiting for your next film and I hope to be with Ranveer

Sucharita promtly saying bye bye to viewers who have not watched Gully Boy at 1:02, this is hilarious
Rahul is talking abouy emiway, he is kind of a big thing in rap. And you people should have mentioned MC sher.( loved his work too)
Kalki's char was important kyonki 1. Poor or less privileged ppl always look for acceptance from ppl way beyond their reach. Both Ranveer n MC Sher knew they were good but when Kalki gives them chance that's when they realise how good they are. Also MC Sher behaves like Sher when he is in his area but look at his body language in front of Kalki...he acts so shy..
2. Aalia thinks she is very bful and way too good for Muraad. It reflects in one of her dialogues with him. So Kalki s track was imp for Aalia to c Muraad can be taken away if he wants by other equally or more bful girls.
3. Thru Kalkis char Muraad gets to c how upper class ppl live from inside their house.
Minal Sharma wow great points. I’d like to add that Kalki’s character also provides the morality angle for Murads character. He falters but also makes a decision even after breaking up with Alia to not pursue or encourage Kalki. Based on this decision Murad and Safeena come back together. So I agree that Kalki’s character provides the flow.
A 100%. Even I loved the movie the 2nd time even more.
The last guy must be emiway bantai. He has crazy following. Even on UA-cam
What about the scene where Ranveer's mother ask his father out in the gully open in public for a private talk? Isn't that the masterful depiction of the claustrophobia inside the house?
True! Watta observation
.. we Want Ranveer Singh's interview after gully boy ..we did not hear from him after the film was shown...please
I know my comment, in all probability will be ignored. I just want to put my view on certain things. My review on the in house critics:
1. Anupama Chopra: One of the most elegant speakers I have seen on UA-cam since forever. I watch your reviews just to listen to your kind voice. And I'm inspired by your daughter Zuni(I read a whole book series just because of your video on Books On Toast.)
2. Sucharita Tyagi: Protect her, Keep her with you forever, FILM COMPANION!!! Humne keh dia na Chopra sahab is par laga dijiye... Coz She's an absolute genius in decoding a movie. My go-to reviewer for any and every movie I want to watch. Love you Sucharita!!!! Keep doing the amazing reviews you do. And NEVER let the negativity pull you down. You're the best!
3. Rahul Desai: I only watch this guy during "Let's Talk Movies" episodes, so I don't know much about him. I can only say from these episodes that,"Bro, tu bahot downer hai bro." Always so sad and wanna-be intellectual. Har cheez mein galti nikalna jarurat nahi hai. Thoda chill kar bro. Itna pareshan mat raha kar.
4. For complete Film Companion: You guys are doing an absolutely amazing job. I love everything about this channel. I watch all your content. I was a bit disappointed that you guys didn't put out a Let's Talk Movies episode after Manikarnika. But well, everyone has their own agenda. So I guess it can't be expected from anyone in the world to stay neutral. Honestly, the movie(Manikarnika) was a little underwhelming for me. But still it wasn't very elegant of Anupama to not interview Kangana before the movie or skipping the Let's talk Movies episode after the release of the movie.
Okay... All said and done. I love this channel and I love the content you are putting out there. Cheers!
Zoya Akthar should have edited Mukkabaz.. So much crispness compromised on a fantastic story in Mukkabaz, Gully Boy is a great reference for stitching it all together in the right amounts..
I completely agree with you people on the fact that this movie was completely not a apolitical movie, it's just Zoya ma'am minced her agenda very cleverly, especially in that scene where Murad is asked about his qualifications and he very proudly answers that he's in the final year of graduation, with his shining eyes. And then that man turns to his daughter and ask her "see everyone is a graduate, you want to end up this level" this clearly reflects the unemployment issue of our country.
Anupama garu I like watching film companion but I don't understand why u say conflict of interest when u won't review movies produced by ur husband . In a patriarchal society a wife's opinion isn't even considered by husband . if u constantly bitch about partiarchy and act as a hypocrite people don't value u anymore. Can't u saperate profession and family bias opinion, And review movies of ur husband nothing wrong with it . I think suchitra is a better review er than u. As a guy who happens to be a feminist u r insulting me
Sat down with my dinner and saw Lets talk movies uploaded ----couldn't get better !!!!!!!!!
I just watched it. Man.. It's hard to say or write how much I loved this movie.. For me Ranveer ka toh best performance so far and also Zoya Akhtar's best movie 🙌🏼 So inspiring yar..
These people are discussing about a film which has exhibited brilliance in all departments of film making which Manikarnika did not have. They spent almost so many minutes discussing only about supporting characters and how they were treated in the movie....could this happen for Manikarnika? Kangana cut everbodys role and made it only about her. Has Kangana ever appreciated her film crew....technicians, artists etc. The answer is a big NO. Manikarnika is a good film but not brilliant. So there cannot be a discussion about Manikarnika. So don't bring feminism, nepotism blah blah here. Period.
Kangana speaks all the time about technicians..and has discredited actors many times..in many interviews she has said that technicians don't get their dues and it's actors who are overrated ..
Neither Ranveer or Alia have spoken about technicians.
You have a star worship characteristic and want to put fucktards like Ranveer and Alia on a pedestal and worship them.
Don't spill bullshit here. It's not about Manikarnika vs Gully Boy. It's just they could have discussed the movie as well.

I am pretty sure these guys review all kinds of movies, the spectrum is wide. So I don’t see why they won’t talk about Manikarnika. There is this anger among many kangana fans. Why is Bollywood not giving her the benefit of the doubt? More than that, kangana was phenomenal in the film. Yet not even a single word. As per the supporting crew, I don’t know how the film turned out when she took up the charge. But the Sonu Sood’s entry scene was not required.
Suchitra..ALia's name is Safeena not Safia...damn no wonder why I don't watch your reviews.
Kalki was partly based On "Rajakumari", who is there in the movie as well as one of the judge.
So they can devote a full 30 minutes on a single film...bt only 2 minutes for a masterpiece like tumbbad...or is it merely for views...
How Alia Bhat is able to give best performance with each & every next of her movie ? Pls. Elaborate on this

Talk about Amruta Subhash's performance, too! Such a powerful performance. Her face showed the pain of her character throughout.
The fact that sky’s character is underwritten may highlight that rich people will come and go but does it really affect the working class?
It is a smart contrast to most other movies about upper class people where the working class characters are underwritten. I.e. if Rahul bose's driver changes it hardly impacts their life. Similarly, if people like sky come and go from Murad's life, they can hardly impact his life or change his situation.

Please get your information right. The problem with the use of Azadi wasn't because the film was apolitical or just because of that at any rate. The version of the track that appears in the soundtrack REMOVED references to caste based discrimination which was there in the original version. This is definitely a form of appropriation if not hypocrisy in a film that purports to speak for an oppressed class of people. I was disappointed that Anupama did not pose these charges to Zoya Akhtar

10:10. You didn't get it. The person was saying that they shut off the atmosphere and put on the track instead of showing that it was happening in the moment with all the background noise present. It's a sound design choice the person was concerned about.
I cannot express the feeling of how proud I am feeling after watching this movie.
I always criticize Bollywood movies because of its cheesiness and flashy dance numbers, star casting for totally inappropriate roles just because they have more public appeal, comic relief characters, shallow characters, hypocrisy, over obsession with love stories, mindless drama etc....... BUT,
this movie is the proof of new era of film making in India.
because its box office hit without being all those things I hate about Bollywood.
that;s why this is a special movie for me.
I hope Bollywood keeps making gems like this every month, after all we are the highest movie making country in the world!
Technically it is Nigeria that produces the largest number of movies in a year.
Seen the movie yesterday, RS has won me over, not that his other movies did not work but he has surprised me yet again, the first time was in lootera. Alia is another who has been surprising me since highway, there are many nuances and yet such simplicity and honesty to her acting. This movie was like a poem to me, I felt it emotionally and visually. Great job to the cast director and cinematographer too 👏👏👏
I just watched the movie yesterday and I am Gushing and glowing over it as well like you guys, so you're not alone, and the cherry on the cake was many small moments that set focus on many layered and parallel backstories of all the other characters like the jail scene with Moeen conversing with Murad and many more like those...

I loved your video, insights and discussion, even got to know about bits and pieces which I missed. The movie was on an another level itself...
Now where we could have cut the movie...I feel in the beginning. Ranveer's entry could had been cut and paced faster, same with Alia's...
Though quite everything was important for the story, but when you don't know what to expect, it feels a bit streched in the beginning.
Though the movie is masterclass after half of first half.
I REALLY LOVED THIS MOVIE. Feeling like "jaane kitne dining ke Baad, GULLY me aaj Chand Nikla"

Great question on Azadi. I think it comes out of nowhere in the film. The song itself is amazing though
If not them (ppl who influence millions, maybe billions) who else will set the example? The people who are mandated by law to shape the country aren't doing anything. Ever heard of an industry called Hollywood? Maybe we can take some pointers from them other than stealing screenplays.

Hello, great discussion as always. I am writing this to appreciate Sucharita's observation about Vijay Raz's character arc and its connection with the physical space. It is rare to see this kind of layered connection of mileau with story.
This film is an instant classic & also will be cultish & generation defining for kids/youth like Dil Chahta Hai was in 2001, should definitely be India’s Oscar entry without a doubt

It was a masterpiece. No doubt about it! Zoya is THE finest filmmaker in the country rn.
But I guess the film was too niche to appeal to the audience which it finally did. It was dark and gritty at times.
I honestly thought it would finish under 50crs. Holy .... it did 140cr. I guess the audience taste is still the same with sonchiriya flopping. GullyBoy worked because Ranveer Singh was selling it and he’s the youth icon rn.
And honestly he deserves a national award because he SOLD the film with his performance. If you had any other actor playing Murad, I’m pretty sure the film wouldn’t have been this coherent.
Agreed but I hope u r still stick with this opinion unlike others who r now hating gully boy
