No, a critic pointed out a while back that her dialogue seemed like it was conceived in English first. She admitted that that was true and was surprised that someone caught it. But she did not take it as a compliment, and has likely worked on making dialogue more genuine to the culture it's portraying. Nothing was said about the entire screenplay being in English and then being translated.

    • @cyfanfor
      @cyfanfor 5 років тому +3

Almost every screenplay in Bollywood these days is written in English.
In India, the term “Screenplay” refers to the detailed action draft of the script without the dialogue, maybe with temporary placeholder dialogue.
And these days it’s almost always in English.
Even when the final Dialogue Draft Script is written, very often, only the dialogue is in Hindi and the action descriptions are still in English.
Even the dialogue, more often than not, is in “Roman Hindi”, not Devanagari.
If nothing else, simply because most people can’t type in Hindi.

The little details in scripting as well as cinematography impressed me a lot. For example -
    1. Murad was shooed away by a bouncer from a club and later the same bouncer welcomed him into the same club.
    2. Murad and Safeena meet at a bridge daily, which is like a heaven for them because that's where they can leave behind the harsh world they live in. Initially we are onle shown mid shots. But later we are shown the same bridge from a top angle long shot where we can see that the bridge is actually built over filthy drain.

And though I understand Hindi perfectly, but obviously I caught myself reading the subtitles a couple of times (Netflix habits) . . . Let me tell you something, the translation of the movie was Amazing!!! It was not the literal translation but more of what "the feel" of the dialogues were. So don't fear about missing out too much. I believe since the day he started building the hyper-enthusiastic character of his, his act went over the top! before that he was AMAZING in Lootera really his best performance, even in Ban Baaja Barat and in Ramleela he was real! Afterwards, everything is a Befikre! He was the weakest link in DDD even Anushka Sharma was real for me (apart from a whole great cast with powerful performances!) His wife Deepika has even done a much muchh better job in a Rohit Shetty film than him in Simmba, I was cringing all the time! Hope he reduces his energy ... Even Varun, I liked him in October but he always has this Vaurn-ess nature to him and that may be because of his loud persona too! Watch Vicky Kaushal in any performance, REAL AF! for me he is the most versatile ...

This happens to be the same pub/venue where he performs his last gig, where he performs at the top 5 contest, and he gets a speedy nod entrance.

I am glad you guys loved this movie. Gully boy is a brilliant movie and I feel it's Zoya Akhtar's best work till date. Ranveer Singh never over-reacting in his movies, he very seamlessly slides into his character he is portraying. You should definitely watch more of his movies to understand his spectrum of characters. Yes gully boy came as a breath of fresh air, and also it was an apt movie to pay a tribute to all the street rappers in India who worked hard immensely to meet their ends and step towards their dream. If you guys liked indian rap, I would suggest you to listen to raps by Divine, Naezy, Emiway, Raja Kumari to stay with, they are the new age Indian rap stars who brought a fresh new take on Indian hip hop. Loved your review. I guess I am going to watch the movie again in this week. 🤩

Ranveer Singh is the biggest superstar in the country right now. He has given multiple high grossing films in the last 5 years. On par with Aamir Khan tbvh. And he is not an overacter at all. He is over the top when the role demands it like in Padmaavat or Simmba.(In bollywood no one does OTT as brilliantly as he does), he is subtle when the role demands it(Bajirao Mastani and Dil Dhadakne Do) and hes understated when the role demands it like in Lootera and GullyBoy.
Funfact: He has done only 11 films xd.
The reason why some people call him over enthusiastic (over actor is not an apt word actually) because he is an eccentric off screen like Robert Downy Jr and intellectuals in India are not used to it. But the masses love him xd

I think the reason they started the credits early while the movie was still rolling in the end is bc Zoya has gotten some criticism for the total movie length being too long. So I am sure there were people on her team that gave her the feedback to try and cut the length. Personally, I felt the movie did not feel long at all bc it was so engaging and used every minute wisely.

This movie is beyond awesome.. One of my all time favourites... And Jaby about the credits playing while the scenes.. I think that because a lot of people were pestering Zoya Akhtar about the length of the movie (smaller runtime=more business), and she just didn't wanna cut any scene so she went with the choice of playing the credits along with running scenes.

He doesn't really overact. People find him faking his happiness and energy but that's not true. The reason for his craziness is because he has achieved what he wanted in his life. He wanted to become an actor and he became a superstar! He is really "Living his dream..." Now, you tell me. If you get everything what you want in your life like he got (be it the love of his life Deepika or Becoming the finest actor or the fact that so many people love him) won't you be happy? That's the exact reason he is always so happy, energetic, charismatic. He wakes up everyday and gets to know that he is an superstar now and he has so many fans, he treats his everyday like his best day! I don't know why people call him weird and hate him.

Like Khilji in Padmaavat, was a beyond loud character where if someone acts politely everyone would start saying "ohhh this man can't act! (Blah blah blah..)" loud/funny characters RS played needed a *bit* overact. If you know about the acting process well, you should know that too. He is that professional. He doesn't put his real self in the acting to divert attention to himself like others. Also he is darkened here. He is very hardworker and sincere. He is Deepika Padukone's husband. He is the new superstar. He has the most critical acclaim at present. The ppl who said that must be his haters who r fans of Ranbir Kapoor. They want to pull him down so much. He is just too emotional, passionate and energetic. U forgot seeing him in Ram Leela and Bajirao Mastani. That shows how he dissolves into his characters and make them look diff from eachother! His eyes speak alot and that depth shows the story. In Simmba that is the character. Yes most of his films r larger than life so it is needed. It is not overacting but very loud acting which is reuired for such films. The director SLB himself seeks it from him. SLB's characters r written loud. He is diff. so his approach is diff. I suggest u to watch his old films Band Baaja Baarat and Lootera.

I loved the movie as well
! Love how you and Achara both caught so many nuances. :) Ranveer Singh is an exceptional actor and human being. He is perhaps the most versatile actor the Hindi film industry has today. His filmography speaks for itself - *Band Baaja Baaraat,* *Lootera,* *Ram-Leela,* *Gunday,* *Dil Dhadakne Do,* *Bajirao Mastani,* *Padmaavat,* *Simmba* and now *Gully* *Boy.* In 9 years, Ranveer has given 9 distinctly different characters and done justice to them! You must check his other movies, if you haven't already.
It is unfortunate that he is often misconstrued as 'over the top' in real life because he shows 'too much' affection and wears 'questionable' clothes, hence taken less seriously and does not fit the typical mold of the bollywood 'hero'. People sometimes fail to understand how he can stay positive and happy all the time.

Nonetheless, I really appreciate him for being himself all these years because I would rather have an individualistic actor like him, who doesn't curb his enthusiasm because of what society expects.

Another awesome line in the movie you didn't talk about was (somewhat along the line of) "why would I let someone else define who I am or will become!!" When his father tells him what his uncle said is true, that they are and will remain servants.
