Dredd and anderson playing good cop/bad cop.
Dredd is the good cop.
More like, as someone else put it, Bad Cop/Nightmare Cop, with Dredd as the Bad Cop.
I love how she did gave him a chance to come clean to her, and gave him the impression he had some sort of power in that exchange, only to turn around and literally extract all the info she needed and fuck his head in the process.
Exactly
Bitch, please!
I laughed so hard it hurt.
OUCH
You know you fucked when Dredd the good cop 😝
It was refreshing to see a subversion of the trope where instead of the expected attempt to stop Dredd to try a more humane approach, she begins hurting him in ways that Dredd simply can't.
This. This one scene got me hooked in to seeing the rest of the film.
This. Dredd saying "interesting" is nothing but a sign of respect.
And later, she gets a badass one-liner before killing him.
Dredd is impressed, but he'd never come out and say it-so he said "Interesting". Plus, love the way this is done-she's in his head, yes, but he clearly has completely missed the fact she's the telepath here. He CAN'T force her to see or do anything, no matter what he may think or believe. She lets him think he can, then basically turns his brain inside out to get what she's looking for. That done, he's left so out of it he's not even self-aware.
Anderson is described as likely the best PSI-Division Judge in Mega-City One in the books. This is why, when she hasn't even made full Eagle yet.
Freaking women. Nah, I'd rather be hit. 🤣
I'll always be pissed we never got a sequel this movie deserved. But I'll always be glad we got at least one truly great Dredd movie in my lifetime.
It needs to be a series. Criminally underrated movie
@@kezgordon6522 yeah, and the comic strip ran for *years* - lot of material there to make a series out of

What are you talking about? We had Stallone's Judge Dredd with Rob Scheider, and it was er um yeah. Wait, never mind. I'll show myself out.
you can thank dickheads fighting over money for that.
I love the fact that she first gives him the impression he has some control and then turns the table on him by basically mindraping him
Yeah, we saw the video as well.
You can see at 02:35 ... she _knows_ what she's about to do to the guy and even feels sorry for him ... and then goes and does it anyway.
Me too, especially after he tried to scare her by droning on about what the clan would do to her and then making her read whatever he was thinking that was supposed to shock her. I disagree with the "mindraping" part, though. He was the one who tried to force her to give him a telepathic blowjob.
give them rope... and watch them hang themselves.
@@kingofcrazy689 you can't recognize the Uno reverse mindrape? Smh
Maybe what I like best about this movie is Karl Urban wears the helmet for the entire movie. Most actors would want their face time, but Urban is willing to sacrifice his own ego for the role. He gets my respect for that.
I never understood actors insistence of "facetime", or more to the point, why the director/producer/whoever gives into it. They are hired to play a roll, the roll should never be diminished to cater to the actor.
@@RandomAmerican3000 Urban also went from his role in LOTR, to playing Bones in Star Trek, back to playing the lead in Dredd. He is a very versatile actor as well.
It helps that Urban is a FAN and collector of Judge Dredd, so he wanted to be as close as possible to the character he knew and loved. The same was NOT true of Stallone's version.
Dammit, Jim, I'm a doctor, not a judge!
I think i read somewhere that director wanted to show his face but karl refused. Could be false rumor
Anderson was a perfect compliment to Dredd. It was interesting to see him develop some kind of feeling for her. She earned his respect, or at least as much respect as he was capable of feeling. Dredd is a "piece of work", as Ma-Ma put it. When Anderson scanned him, she got a sense of the raging predator inside him. Dredd would not have been a cop in a city that had manageable crime - he needed a huge rocky shore crash against. His hesitation at the end about Anderson's evaluation was very interesting. Yes, at the last, he respected her. A sequel with them working as partners would have been great.
Excellent analysis. My only thing is we have seen him post collapse. Who knows how he'd have been in a non mega City. I like to think he was tough and rough already yes but being a judge in mega city means you have to become even more tough to survive. Maybe he had had a partner before. Maybe that partner didn't come back.....
He's basically post eclipse Guts given a badge.
"His hesitation at the end about Anderson's evaluation was very interesting. Yes, at the last, he respected her."
Pretty sure she would have been a fail, until he saw her refuse medical assistance, then he respected that she could handle herself as a Judge long term.
@@whenpigsfly8178 not sure how you work that out. I think it was more she had already passed but he just wasn't sure whether to subject her to being a full judge. Then when she did refuse medical he decided well fine. So kinda similar but different direction.
Watching this movie made me realize that it's actually a prequel to a game from back in the days called Judge Dredd vs. Death which came out in 2003. It had Anderson as a respected judge in it and i love how this shows her story arc on how she became a judge. I didn't read the comics and don't know much about the lore but i also would love to see a sequel of this movie or a movie of the game.
I really like Olivia Thirlby, it’s too bad she hasn’t been in anything more noteworthy lately.
Right? She was so good in Dredd!
She was awesome in this movie.
What is she up to these days?
@@lasbrujazz filming some English/Portuguese drama
She should have got her own Anderson movie.
I like how he said "interesting". Not in a "thats interesting information youve given me rookie" way, but a "you just pulled vital information from a hardened criminal in a way i didnt expect, and was possibly more violent than what I would have done" interesting.
I just like to say that even if she fails to be a Judge, she can still serve in the Hall of Justice's Internal Affairs Department or Counselling. With her psychic powers, she can root out any other corrupt Judges and mentally help Judges that are suffering from PTSD.
In the comics Anderson wound up joining and eventually becoming a senior member of a 'psy division' composed entirely of rare judges with similar powers as hers. She and Dredd worked together on many cases. She also specifically does what you said, roots out corruption and is a critic of many of the Justice System's failings.
One year late but yeah, they literally have a mini Xavier with them and just let her leave.
@@thien0300 Naw man. In the movie Anderson gets a pass and be a Judge when she's supposed to fail by normal standards. Dredd sees Anderson's psychic powers are capable to deliver an even faster and accurate judgement. That seems to outweigh losing her Lawgiver.
sad to say that people like her will either be corrupted by the system or "Epsteined" if she refuses to comply.
She wouldn't make SJS, the internal affairs judges are all absolute bastards who think nothing of kicking the crap out of other judges to test their dedication.
The moment when he headbutts him and says ''spill it!!'' 1000% Dredd right there, Urban abso fucking lutely nailed it
I don't agree. Assaulting a person who is detained ? Not Dredd
@@power2084 In this situation? Dredd would absolutely find it necessary to assault a detainee if it means getting information that would get him and his partner out of harm's way. You forget that he's trapped in that block.
@@DarkCyberElf I know Dredd better than u do.
@@power2084 that's like saying your junk is bigger than his. lol. i think you talk about Dredd in his golden years, not his younger ones. here... he is portrayed younger than in the comics. so... might be a bit different than your Dredd that you know so well. also... this Dredd just got 3 Gatlings firing at him, nearly killing him and his partner... and definitely killed a LOT of innocent lives in the process. all this after literally having killed probably a few dozen gang members on his way to MaMa. i'd say... he is pretty much Dredd here. but... idk Dredd as well as you do, after all.
@@DarkCyberElf And the fact that Dredd basically knows he's already commited multiple murders, but can't execute him because Anderson slipped up by saying "99%" when he asked her if she was sure. Dredd has zero issues in assaulting low life's who step out of line and slapping one around to get information to save his and his partner's life and who he's more or less sure is going to get a bullet to the face anyway, isn't out of character.
We *BADLY* need a sequel.. or many sequels to this awesome movie.
@G E T R E K T ? Nobody said anything about that womanly stuff gtfo
@@JudgeDredd_ He's an insecure clown. SJWs live rent free in his head.
I’d settle for a puppet show at this point.
She is actually a good Cop. She gives him a chance to come clear. Him not taking it, is not her fault. Good doesn't have to be nice.
Yup. She tried showing him she can let him go and have him give the information freely, and instead of spilling it he threatened to violate her. She knew it was pointless to reason with a sick fuck like him.
That is a good one! 'Good doesn't have to be nice.'
I love it when Dredd's impressed.
I love the trick this movie use with Anderson.
It looks like she's feeling bad about the torture Dredd is using. And why wouldn't she, that's how she was presented to us until now.
So, it feels like she's trying to help the guy in a more humane way.
And then... suddenly, we get the truth. She's not being innocent here. If she was, the journey until here helped shear that out. The extraction is as brutal or worse than Dredd's, and way more efficient.
I love this scene.
Yup, getting beaten to a pulp by Dredd was actually the _nicer_ way, all things considered. Makes you wonder how they would have handled things had there been a sequel, Dredd _knowing_ that he has to hand over to Anderson to really mess with a criminal.
Haha yeah. That screws the whole good cop bad cop thing. Hell maybe we could see it twice in movie the first time from Dredd/outside POV. Dredd tells a random intro punk " I am being nice. Don't make me give you to her" and they are like "what that sexy ***** what's she gonna do?" Dredd growls "I don't know but toughest guys always piss themselves after so...." Punk grins and goes "try me" Dredd steps away. "Alright" then you see Anderson step up and within seconds the guy si screaming, tears rolling down face, piss rolling down his leg as he shakes uncontrollably. As she turns to Dredd he collapsed to floor and whimpers "Mama" Dredd and Anderson double take then go oh face then she delivers the information to Dredd they need. I'd love to do a trilogy where they grow to be experienced partners. They both only work with each other (iirc Dredd was/is a loner before that). She reads him again in at least one film where he's been knocked out and hospitalised (do they do hospitals?). This time tears roll down her face. You don't get an explanation. Other than when he wakes up he says "never read me a third time" she says "I don't need to, I know why you are how you are now and I don't plan on going anywhere. He replies "neither did they". She looks at him. "Alright" Dredd says. " What next?" Anderson replies" while you were out I gathered a bunch I intel so we can eliminate the crime boss that did this to you".
I also want to include the guy with the anger meter in his head somewhere. Maybe as villain in 2 and incarcerated helper in three.
After that trilogy I'd have another with the dark judges. Do the whole Andersen arc from the comics but switch it up.
I also like to think Dredd's "interesting" at the end was partly on the intel and partly on its acquisition.
@@TheWPhilosopher Well why don't you write a fucking script then
@@johnnada649 why don't you? 😋
Judge Anderson was such a cool character. She and Dredd played off of each other very well.
Dredd considered Anderson's interrogation of their prisoner "Interesting" for two reasons:
1) Anderson managed to get all of that information out of him in mere seconds, after Dredd had practically beat the dude unconscious. She furthermore didn't even touch him. The information, itself, means that Dredd was both right and wrong as well. Ma-Ma could very well have just let them walk out, so as to not bring attention to her manufacturing facilities in the upper levels, but the second they got a prisoner who actually KNEW something, full lockdown was inevitable. It's ALSO possible that, the second they entered and were confirmed to not be on Ma-Ma's payroll, she was going to lock the building down regardless, since they could accidentally stumble upon something even without a prisoner spilling the beans.
2) Before this, Anderson had been hesitant to execute someone who was completely defenseless (at least in her eyes). That caused Dredd to think less of her, since empathy/sympathy in this world gets you killed far faster than in our world. However, she did not hesitate to enter this dude's mind and (at least from Dredd's POV) cause him so much fear and panic that he *pissed himself* as a result. Again, all without touching him. Something that Dredd has probably never seen happen before. Her abilities are absolutely "Interesting"...but her transformation from reluctant rookie to someone willing to dirty her hands in order to get the job done is something he considered a possibility, but likely didn't think would happen, or at least not so soon.
So, in a way, "Interesting" had a double meaning here.
I love diving into the comments and reading insights like these. Really makes you appreciate the scene a lot more.
Once dredd knew he would never let that go.
Your #1 is wrong. We see in the movie, Mama was not concerned that judges were in the building, or even that she lost a distribution point to a raid. She considered it an inevitable cost of doing business.
She also didn't care about losing Kay, only that he might talk under interrogation. You pointed that out, but so did Dredd in THIS video 0:33-0:42. Dredd was exactly correct.
Thanks for this, I hadn't considered that he was reacting to the revelation of her talent. But you are obviously correct
I like this explanation, but probably you're just overthinking the scene, either way I enjoyed it
This was so much better than Stalone's version
Urban certainly nailed "the classic" Dredd from the Comic books. While the Stallone flick was entertaining in its own right, basically it’s like the difference between the earlier Batman movies and "The Dark knight"...
@@koookeee yeah, both movies had pros and cons. Stallone’s movie was a little sillier but had some cool effects and at least featured a traditional Dredd villain. This particular movie I felt captured the essence of the character a little better, even if the plot was slightly borrowed from The Raid.
Wasn't there talk of a sequel?
@@MrRolyat98 I liked the production design in the Stallone movie, too. It was dark, but still had the more "classic" comic approach than "Dredd’s" grittiness.
@@MrRolyat98 - Dredd borrowed _nothing_ from The Raid. Dredd went into pre-production with a working script in 2006. The Raid was started filming in 2010. I still have a leaked copy of the script - entitled "Peach Trees" - from 2009. In spite of a line or two, it shot for shot what was on screen, right down to stage direction.
The two films are similar because "Trapped in a building with criminals trying to kill you" is an old tried and tested format, particularly in low budget movies. Die Hard, Assault on Precinct 13, Escape From New York, all used this trope.
Fun fact: There was a Comic crossover where Xenomorphs, and Predators came to Mega City 1. Dredd handled them. I'd die to see Karl Urban's Dredd do that.
I think he even teamed up with Batman oncr
I wouldn't because that'll play down the xenomorph, and the xenomorph is something nothing can control.

I am reminded of the Doom Slayer, being both he and Dredd took on (and massacred) an invading alien force. Which is also amusing considering Karl Urban portrayed Dredd as well as Reaper, the film version of the Doomguy/Doom Slayer (albeit only in function as the protagonist of the movie). If they made a movie based on Doom 2016/Doom Eternal, it'd be even more amusing if they got Karl to reprise the role as Doomguy.
Hidden gem of a movie.
She's really beautiful too:))
I mean even if she failed assessment.
No way they're just gonna let that power of her go to waste.
I think failure mostly results in death. So. 🤷
Their Justice Department has a lot more roles than just Judge, they have interrogators and intel analysts and whatnot, they've already spent too many resources on Anderson to waste her just because she would have failed the judge assessment. The fact that she survived this combined with her doing well on the previous testing means they'd find something for her to do
I think after that even Dredd was like “yeah those 3 points margin is not really that big of a deal”
Karl Urban would have made a kickass Batman.
Me: "That's intense and awesome!"
Dredd: "Interesting."
To be fair Dredd didn't see what we did. All he probably saw was Anderson standing over the other dude for sometime.
I remember back in 2012 when people were asking for a sequel Karl Urban said he sees the Judge Dredd reboot as a cult classic but he was always interested for a sequel. Just like how the actor who played Vision on Avengers said the same thing about the movie he did a long time ago called priests which also had Karl Urban as a vampire cowboy

Urban has been in a lot of one off movies and TV projects that sorely need revisiting. ( ;_;)

It is one of the best comic book adaptations ever, so faithful to dredds character, great supporting cast, great visuals, and one of my all-time favourite villains. Lena Headley was just class in it
This moment is what made me love her and I insist if they ever get the sequel people have been clamoring for, they don’t exclude her or make her a simple, small cameo. Having never read the comics this is based on, I can still see why in 1983 and 1986 she was voted most deserving of a spin-off and best supporting character at the Eagle Awards.
She had high marks on her assessment by making the perp tell the information and also scared the piss out of him. All without touching him
@National Socialism She didn't fail, though. She only thought she had when she lost her weapon. Dredd didn't make any pass/fail decision until the very end, when he passed her.

This is one of the few movies that actually made good use of 3D and not just a gimmick for one or two moments.
For some reason, i cant help but think that for Anderson and Dredd, it only took a minute, maybe 2. But for Kay, she could probably have made it feel like hours to dig out the intel they needed.
