I respect any actor who can forgo the actor trap of narcissisim and resist the urge to show their face. Double respect for an actor who can deliver a top-notch performance with a bucket on his head with the note 'scowl harder' taped to the inside.
But everyone knows what Karl Urban looks like. It's not the same as a new unknown actor concealing their face in a big role.
@@DaveDexterMusic Perhaps OP referring to Sylvester Stallone and his role as Dread?
He was well known but his ego insisted that went against the established lore where Dread and his helmet is concerned..
@@stuartburns8657 I'm fairly certain that was the studios decision, as they wanted Stallones mug on the posters.

It was a studio decision that Stallone lose the lid, BUT he had the pull to have insisted on keeping it on if he really cared about the project.
Karl Urban said in an interview. “I say this hypothetically. If I went to a movie called Judge Dredd and the lead actor at one point took off his helmet so we could see his full face I would just puke in my popcorn because that’s not Dredd. He is mysterious and enigmatic. We’re doing it right, it’s gonna be harder, grittier and above all faithful to the comic. It’s gonna kick ass.” Yes it did Mr Urban and us Dredd Fans appreciate you for performance.

One advantage of the lack of a sequel is that we don't get to see the concept watered down or incompetently tampered with by giant media corporations. The good die young.
A silver lining

Karl Urban is my god damn hero for having respect for the artform to go "This movie isn't about me, making me more famous, or making you associate my face with this character, the character never takes his helmet off, and im doing that justice" for that I deeply respect him alot more then most actors
Which is funny because I just saw a summary of Stallone's Judge Dredd, where he absolutely takes off the helmet for like half the movie. No joke, I thought that it wasn't even a Dredd movie at that point - it was just Stallone doing his usual movies things. It was disappointing and I'm not even a follower of the OG material or anything too. Yeah, Karl Urban deserves a mighty salute for his superior performance.
@@keystrix3704 More then half if I remember correctly, he only spends like 20 minutes of screen time wearing the helmet, the only other character i've seen wear their iconic headwear less is MCU Thor wearing his for like 10 minutes tops across almost a dozen movies
Karl Urban has been in almost every need franchise for the past twenty years. I first saw him as Eomer in Lord of the Rings, and he has been an underrated powerhouse ever since.
Still remember me seeing this film for the first time and thinking how they cannot possibly make Dredd say the "I am the law" quote without sound silly after the Stallone movie.

As much as I love Karl Urban's performance as Dredd... I have to give mad props to Lena Headey as "Ma-ma"...
Dude she was terrible! All she did was swear a lot. She's not intimidating at all.
I like the cinematographic decision at 2:20-2:21 to put Ma-Ma and Dredd at almost the same place within the frame before and after the cut, with the same kind of body language, pose. It really hammers in the idea that even though Dredd is one of the good guys, he's just as brutal as the crime lord herself, if not more; and the criminals and the Judges are pretty much two sides of the same coin in this setting.
Good spot. I love seeing creative decisions like that.
Nice catch!

I've seen both adaptation... both were good but karl urban was better for the role.. I was only 6 years old seeing the Stallone version so being that young seeing for the first time it still holds a place in my memory.
@@colemanwalsh7477 Stallone's one had some nice Mega City One visuals but the grim aesthetic and judge demeanor in Urban's one was way better.

It's my Favourite role of his.
I'd love to hear him return to the role in an Animated series.
He said it! He said the line!
This is a criminally underrated movie. It's GUILTY
Urban's delivery is just perfect here. Everything is stated as a fact. No threats, no bravado, just reminding people of the laws of reality.
And then at the end, allowing himself just a tiny bit of actual emotion. After everything he's been through, that restrained irritation is far more terrifying than any furious rant could be. It means he's still in control, and that means you're dead.
He gave them the biggest warning they're ever gonna get. And they forced his hand immediately.
Makes me think his mind must be screaming "JUST STOP MAKING ME DO THIS."
A genuinely well written and well delivered version of the line that could have easily been so cheesy. This movie is a gem.
"I am the law" and "judgement time". Two of the baddest and chilling lines ever said.
Karl Urban doesn't get anywhere near enough credit for his faithfulness in portraying this role. Helmet on, monotone delivery, absolutely zero bullshit. Karl Urban absolutely killed it as Dredd, and this movie is a relic of what superhero films could've been
Damn this is just TOO GOOD!
The way he looks upon the burning criminals and there's fire in his visor - omg that is so iconic and awesome
His stern mouth just seems unphased - it's judgement time
I love how slow motion is not a gimmick. It is explained in the story of the film it's a drug that makes you experience slow motion. And it doesn't happen all the time either.
nor do you get any faster reaction. unlike adrenaline that triggers slow mo. adrenaline also rarely grants super strength
Rewatching this scene, I like the little detail of the quick transition from when Dredd orders incendiary and pulling the trigger. There's no hesitation, no dramatic aiming, no pause. Dredd knew exactly what he was going to do and how, and he executed it flawlessly.
This is one of my top ten favorite movies of all time. They really need to do a second one
Considering the woke trash being churned out lately, no, no they do not.
I will die on this hill..."Dredd" is the most criminally underrated action/comic adaptation of all-time. I will die on this hill.
I am with you.
You ain't the only one, brother...
mass grave on that hill with you
you're not wrong
Careful. I'm sure if it's criminally underrated, Dredd knows how to fix that..
Karl Urban and Lena Headey are golden. It's extremely difficult to have a good protagonist without a good antagonist in a comic book adaptation, that's why Nolan's second Batman it's also the best Batman adaptation. And in this movie they were perfect.
Every actor who can say "MAMA"still sounding badass deserves a praise
This had elements of Rio Bravo, Trespass, the Raid and Assault on Precinct 13 - brilliant movie.
They nailed Dredd in this movie... Karl Urban did an excellent job and thanks for leaving the helmet on.....
Karl Urban absolutely nailed Dredd bro. This movie is so underrated and I'm so sad. I was STOKED to see the remake and they KILLED IT.
YES he is dredd
Thank you Karl for so many great sci-fi moments
I still think getting a little more character development on MaMa would've been nice.. but I guess in the end she didn't matter. Like Dredd said, she's a common criminal. Even if she thinks she's a bigshot, even if she's the boss of this megablock.. in the grand scheme of things she's just another criminal. just another target for Dredd to take out.
They should've made a sequel. The cinematography, the direction, the acting, the writing, the faithfullness to the comics.. everything was excellent. I feel the reason this didn't do so great in the boxoffice is that they felt it needed to be packaged with the 3D gimmick that people have already gotten tired of. In theatres, it wasn't "Dredd", it was "Dredd 3D". Just that alone probably pushed a bunch of people away because when you throw the gimic in to the title it gives the impression they're just trying to rely on the 3D aspect for the movie to actually be entertaining.. wich with Dredd was certainly not the case.
I remember at the time, the marketing for it was virtually non existent, that along with a very limited release meant it didn't make a huge amount at the box office. It's as if the studios wanted it to fail.
There was a prequel comic with Ma Ma's origins that was released awhile back. It's actually pretty good.
Weirdly enough this was the only film I've ever seen in 3D where I thought that actually added to the experience. But I get your point.
I think we got juuust enough on Mama. Same as we got just enough on Dredd, and Anderson. She was a criminal, but also part of the meat that Mega City 1 ground up. Which was a bit of a theme throughout the whole film. She was basically broken, but also a survivor, and the film showed that in all sorts of little ways, very adroitly I thought.
Really wish the Netflix series with Urban returning had panned out.
That is the thing. The events of this movie aren't a special occasion for Dread. For him it was a Tuesday at the office. He deals with hundreds of Mama's and Peach Trees each year. He'll be worked up when something really special happens, like undead judges for another existence that are hellbent on ending all life as their means of preventing crime.
I love these clips from Dredd. It became an instant fave after my first viewing. And how could you not love Lena Headey.

I've never read a Dredd comic, but you don't need to to enjoy this movie. It's a kick ass action flick in its own right.
I think one of the best aspects of this movie was the decision to make Ma-Ma really just a very common criminal. She's not a super-genius, she's not a supernatural being or a cyborg.
