  • I took the 55-pound Aventon Ramblas eBike on legitimate singletrack to see how it rides. There are definitely quite a few pros and cons with the stock bike. There are lots of details in this longer video review!

    Thanks for the trail review. I also have a Ramblas and i updated it quite a bit to get the weight optimal. For upgrades i did Fox 34 , Carbon Wheelset, Sram GX Cassette ,Carbon Handle Bar, Different Dropper Post. This made a noticeable difference for me. Definitely no longer at the $2699 price point so keep that in mind as well but i enjoy the bike much more.

    I nearly purchased an Aventon Ramblas last week, but after a test ride, I decided against it. Since no shops in my town carry this brand, I had to drive 150 km to Victoria, BC, to find a bike shop that offered test rides on the Ramblas. Kudos to Aventon for the 100 Nm torque engine, which is excellent for larger riders like myself (220 lbs) when climbing hills. The torque is impressive, but unfortunately, Aventon cut corners on other aspects of the bike. In my opinion, the overall quality and enjoyment of the ride on dirt single tracks are poor. It might be okay for pavement, and that's where the Ramblas shines, as you pointed out.
    I must mention that the front forks combined with the hardtail design make this one of the roughest e-bikes I've ever ridden. I felt every bump on the single track trail in my wrists and back during the test ride. Additionally, the 100 Nm torque engine sounds like an over-revved electric drill and is much louder compared to other e-bike engines like Bosch or Yamaha. Ultimately, the Ramblas wasn’t the right fit for me, and I ended up finding a better match with a GasGas Enduro on sale.
    I encourage everyone to test ride the e-bike you're considering before purchasing! E-bikes are a big investment, so finding the right fit and ride is worth the time and effort. Happy trails, everyone!

    I went from an 80-lb midrive fat bike with full suspension to this, so I was surprised to hear you say how heavy this bike is. I absolutely love the bike for just exploring and light off road riding. I wouldn't take it on extreme downhill or tight single track. I can tell you have great timing with your shifting, and it is great for the motor, drivetrain, and battery longevity.

    Take a look at the Orbea Rise H10. Thinking about it.
    As a highly knowledgeable and experienced mtb'er you were able to recognize the safety issues with e-mtb's on single track. Can you imagine the Ramblas and other such e-mtb's in the hands of a noobs on singletrack ? Saw a recent article in Singletracks (?) about a informal study by Bike Patrol emt's in Australia and the uptick they are seeing in injuries on the trails. E-bikes and rider inexperience seems to be the the main suspects.

      That makes sense. It's extremely easy to get yourself into trouble on an eBike. I just demoed one here in Bentonville today and it was definitely something I could see noobs getting into trouble.

    After dialing in the torque settings on the app 38:55, can you redo this ride and give us your impressions? 👌

    I agree that the ramblas has way too much torque (100Nm) to be able to properly control pedalling on technical sections. I went from a 70 Nm motor to a 60 Nm motor and found the assist much more manageable. Based on the reviews I believe the bike is way more oriented towards a commuter bike than single track. BTW: the coil spring front end doesn't help with the weight factor.

    • @ShadLife
      @ShadLife  Місяць тому +3

      It's definitely too much power for technical sections, but I can adjust the power, which is what I did. I lowered it to Eco and had no problem slipping out and it made the rock garden climb super easy. I guess my question is, when would the higher power modes ever be needed. I would rather have a lighter bike than a ridiculous amount of power requiring a giant heavy battery.
      They also have an app where you can fine tune the power. So they obviously put a lot of thought into it. The biggest detractor of this bike for me is the weight. I plan to change out the wheels and the fork to see if it rides better that way.
      I rode my regular mountain bike, Spectral 125, the following day on an even hillier trail with a lot of flowy down sections and I can honestly say I much prefer that over riding a 55 pound eBike. So I am not convinced.

    • @mr.monitor.
      @mr.monitor. Місяць тому +3

      It doesn't have too much torque. That is a silly assumption. You can just use eco and turn it down using the app if you want less power. Having more torque is great when you want to use it.

    • @ShadLife
      @ShadLife  Місяць тому +1

      @mr.monitor. I honestly would take less torque and a lot less weight. It doesn't make sense to have all this ridiculous amount of power which requires a massive battery and a much heavier bike. The balance, especially for mountain biking, needs to be in the middle somewhere. It's almost as if you need all this extra power because the bike is so heavy!

    Do you think it's worth buying if I already own a Pace 500.3? I don't do a lot of off road riding, but might do light trial riding. I mainly just wanted something that's a bit stronger I can flick around, but it sounds like you find this bike too heavy and would rather opt for a fully?
    Thanks

      Ah, I see. The only reason I got the Ramblas was because it has a mid drive motor. I don't think a rear hub driver motor, which all other Aventon's have, is good for mountain biking because all the weight is in the rear and not centered on the bike.
      So for light trail use, rear hub bikes might be fine. But for actual mountain biking I would have zero interest in a rear hub drive motor. Companies do those models to save money. I costs more to have a mid drive motor, but it's worth it because then the power is directly assisting rider input and makes shifting work the same as a regular bike.

    I don't mind my Turbo Tero 3.0, it's just the right balance but it only has 50 Nm. I wonder how well this Aventon works compared to say the Brose or Bosch in terms of responsiveness. My Tero feels much more like an assist at least in eco/trail, and I hardly notice it.

    • @ShadLife
      @ShadLife  Місяць тому +1

      The Aventon is definitely not a mid power eBike so it's a ridiculous amount of power. This is why it makes a better commuter bike than a mountain bike. It's too heavy and overpowered. If it was 10 or so pounds lighter it would be a lot more fun on singletrack.
      The Aventon app is super cool because it allows you to adjust power output and responsiveness. This is why eco is pretty much all I ever needed.

    Interesting…. I wonder how this would compare to Jeff Jones’ ebikes. He seems to favor heavier weight, and a motor that applies torque differently.

    • @ShadLife
      @ShadLife  Місяць тому +1

      A lot of people prefer that, but they ride very differently than I do, which I explained a bit in the video. I watch Sam Pilgrim shred in his eBike on his UA-cam channel. But he is going a lot fast on wider open trails sending it on huge jumps. That's very different than riding singletrack at a place like I rode here in this video.

      Thanks! And thanks for the review. I hope more companies like Aventon, or Rad get into affordable trail worthy bikes, which might help drive cost down, and innovation up.

    Got mine today. 1. You seem to be okay with the gear rattles. 2. Hunt wheels (has the mullet set on sale). Could you see if this set is compatible with the "6 bolt"? It's the Hunt Trail wide mullet. 1800 grams 30mm rim. Also, why would you change to 2.6 vs 2.4 tires? Thanks. Enjoy learning through your channel.

    • @ShadLife
      @ShadLife  Місяць тому

      I already have the Hunt Trailwide mullet wheels from a build I did 2 winters ago. The ones I have do have the 6 both and not spline drive. So if it's a 6 bolt wheelset you should be good to go. You will also need the wheelset to have Shimano HG driver to be compatible with the SRAM NX Cassette. One thing I am trying to figure out is how to set up the bike with a different wheel diameter (circumference). With a 27.5 wheel on the rear the speed and mileage will be inaccurate otherwise.

      @@ShadLifeThe small version of the Ramblas has 27.5 wheels, so they must have a way to compensate in the programming.

    Cheating’s all part of the fun! Hows the rear end feel, more compliant with the extra frame weight?

    • @ShadLife
      @ShadLife  Місяць тому

      I am not sure what you are asking by the rear end being more compliant. Are you askiing if it gives way easier? If so, it seems pretty planted to me. If anything, the front wheel wanted to understeer more due to the added weight and the tires not being grippy enough for the speeds.
