This is so classic!! I met Todd in Austin, Texas in 1989. Great guy even though my wife was entranched with him. He had a 23 piece band with him. Great sound!!
CRY LIKE A BABY. This and other songs from that time in my life were on the playlist I built when my fabulous FORMER girlfreind and I toured the town/area I grew up in .. tonight trying real hard to let her go ... "come what may" .. meant something else to her ...
A Philly boy- this song made me completely fall apart in his concert at SDSU in about 1980 or '81- My first love and I had just broken up. Ah, memories. And he is an amazing musician.
This song, this video transport me to the fourth dimension, and I'm able to freely return as I replay it in my mind's own recording studio. What a gift of enchanting perfection! Haunting, poignant, gorgeous!
Oh Sis-we used to listen to this song and so many more growing up-we were the sisters everyone wanted to be around-now I am a solo act and not doing it well-be at peace and no more pain my sweet angel sister-I will forever be your one and only sister-T
Such a modern day song with a timeless message. Regretfully, it is the rare exception that former lovers who felt such deep passion for each other can they learn to enjoy a platonic relationship. I could not do that, guilty as charged.
this song brings back memories of my old friends from elementary school.around 1976 i think thats about the year the song came out.love to listen to todds songs.
For me I was at the Cleveland AGORA BALL ROOM in 1973 I just turned 21 and TODD SANG "A DREAM GOES ON FOREVER" WoW what a ❤ HEART ❤ FELT TUNE AND 24 YEARS LATER WHEN MY FATHER PASSED AWAY IN SEPTEMBER OF 1997 I SANG IT AT HIS FUNERAL SERVICE AND WHEN I DESIGNED THE HUGE TOMBSTONE FOR MY PARENTS GRAVE AFTER WHERE IT READS MARRIED JUNE 30TH 1950 AFTER THAT IT READS "A DREAM GOES ON FOREVER" THE MONUMENT COMPANY USED IT FOR TELEVISION AND MAGAZINE ADVERTISEMENT. ❤ 😊
I had the pleasure of seeing Todd Rundgren live in 1988. My dad surprised my mom with concert tickets when he played at I think was the Los Angeles civic auditorium. Tracy Chapman had just kinda gotten big at the time and opened for him. He is an AMAZING artist and one of the most talented of his time. Most musicians would stop playing if they broke a string but not Todd, he just keeps singing while repairing it. Love this guy so much
TODAY IS 9~9~2009....My mother's birthday....though she has passed on,I remember her singing this when it would play on the radio when I was in my teen's......I miss you mom....Happy Birthday...I woke up with this song in my head.....and hearing it play.....brought you back for a while...I love and miss you....HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM....REST IN GOD'S LOVE.....DIANE....
Vanilla Sky brought me to this song. Opened up to the world of Todd Rundgren. So thankyou Mr Cameron Crowe for not only making of cinemas most beautiful films but for helping shape my musical taste. Heck Vanilla Sky changed everything for me.
La La La ... on and on... all natural genius of the heartstrings... An absolute favorite artist of mine since I was 12 yo... Hello, it's me, Todd... Thanks...
In loving memory for the one who was first a colleague, then a friend, a confident. And much more... Before we had to break up while our love was growing. So long. I wish you a better luck in your next work. Someone said that there's people we meet too early, and others too late. I will always miss you...
I adore this song. It's epic, phenomenal and quite frankly no words can describe this classical masterpiece. My love for Todd and his skill was instantaneous, Despite me being only 14 years.
"A genius, a true star," Todd should be in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Buy his cd's and support great music! Show the record companies what we REALLY WANT TO HEAR! Most of Today's "Pap music" sucks Canal Water. We deserve better! We deserve stuff like THIS!
I remember seeing this on Midnight Special in the 70's. This was a freat song then and is still a good classic. They sure don't write them like this anymore.
This song is generally assumed to be about Rundgren's breakup with long-time companion Bebe Buell in 1977. She is also known for dating rock musicians, and her social relationships with musical and cultural icons across four decades. She is actress Liv Tyler's mother from a brief relationship with Aerosmith vocalist Steven Tyler.
This song's composition, melody, timing, and phasing are just beautiful! The sound of the organ and the way it just hangs at the end of phrases is really unique. The resolution of rhythm and melody are perfect and the lyrics are bittersweet but uplifting. When it first came out and got a lot of airplay, it I remember thinking that it even made the horror of driving on smoggy freeways in LA bearable.
Well said 456japan ,.. this man plays all the instruments during his recordings .. drums ..piano ...sax... guitar ..bass and the list goes on ... what a talent !
This is the best you tube version of this song ! I hop some of you young folks can get into some of this classic song wrighing and vocals Im no longer a young pup but this take me back
Thank you for sharing this video. I know Todd wouldn't like me saying so, at least I don't think he would, but I think that he was at his best during this period and this is one of his best songs. I was so disappointed when he started rapping in in the 90's, actually walked out of a show. This video, this is how Todd will be and should be known and someday remembered.
He is awesomely unique and uniquely awesome, I love this song and Healer best. The lyrics are brilliant as is the music..his passion and soul come shining through with natural grace and ease. Mr Local Patron, yes androgyny is often synonymous with creative genius. His clothing reflects that; lyrics are often focused on love or spirituality...like that immensely too.
One of the most scary, sad, surreal, intense parts of the film Vanilla Sky unfolded as this song played. It's a mind-filming film (a remake of Abre los Ojos, also good) and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a trippy, powerful story but also to Todd fans, as the song fits in such a powerful way w/ what's going on in the plot at that time. Awesome song... Todd = amazing artist.
Agree, rundgren is amazing....wont be appreciated like most artists till you cant hear him anymore... I love his art and talent...best to him and his band...
Long term fan, and I remember buying Something/Anything and loving Piss Aaron, and all the rest. Can We Still does have wonderful lyrics and nobody can present it like Rundgren, who was far ahead of his time. I was happy to learn that he'd only moved to the other side of the production window after noting he hadn't put out an album for awhile.
denial mixed with a strong dose of bargaining. No Todd we usually can't. Still a great song, beautifully arranged and produced, with a sentiment and state of mind most everyone can recall, or at least relate to. Someone had to say it, we were just lucky that Todd managed to say it so well.
Thanks a lot I love Todd
This is one of my favorite Todd songs ... well, "one of" my favorites -- I have it narrowed down to 37 "favorite" Todd songs. It's damned near impossible to cut it to one, much less anything under 37. And when I go hear him in September in Akron, when he does AWATS, that may jump back up to about 39 or 40 ...
This was also used as a scene track from an F/X episode of 'NIP/TUCK' when Christian Troy and Sean McNamara were on a one-night excursion with a high-end call girl Sean hired from the bar to use as a catalyst revenge to Christian. Not many will get this but, the few who do.. will appreciate it! GREAT SCENE!! Best tv show ever made!
This guy is a genius. I only discovered his music properly about a year ago. I now have something/anything, runt and hermit of mink hollow on vinyl so far. Im on the lookout for the Todd LP next.... =D
I love the seventies too! i was only around ten years old but as i got older and heard Todd's music i loved it and still do now this song was in that movie Vanilla Sky love ya Todd!!!! OH yeah you had it goin in looks too!!!!!!! My first crush looked just like you LOVE YOU TO GLEN!!!!!!!
Black Dog. Love your insight and (yet) talent goes beyond labels. Regardless. Todd is Todd. You are You. I am myself. Story be told. We are all unique. Regardless and Beyond. We are Ourselves based on the music we leave behind in this life.
This genious compiled the music for the Bat Out of Hell albumn. Can we still be friends was the hit that brought me to see this guy and his band at the Knebworth concert twice in the 70's. Brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Almost androgynous and so nobly performed - fantastic! And the choir behind, wonderful. The piano sound as the heavenly gates open up and reveal themselves in front of you. Great art from Todd here - ACU
I first saw VSky late night back around '04. I only saw bits and pieces of it while my longtime GF slept. I never forgot the haunting intro of this song after Cruise killed Sofia... After 2 weeks I totally forgot this movie. In 2007 after 17 years my gf and I broke up. One month ago this movie blasted back into my memory. I obsessed to find this song - found it a week later and cried for a long time. Now I watch the movie over and over and my life is changing -for the better. Bizarre
This song only went to #29 in the States, but surprisingly was a Top 10 hit in Australia, obviously due to regular airings of this video on Countdown (ABCtv pop music show from 1974-1987)
This is so classic!! I met Todd in Austin, Texas in 1989. Great guy even though my wife was entranched with him. He had a 23 piece band with him. Great sound!!

An old girlfriend and I said this before we broke up. We liked this song. Doubt I'll ever see her ever again. It was fun Deb...

Wow, I've been looking for this song for the past probably 10 years. I didn't know that Todd Rundgren sung this.
Such a modern day song with a timeless message. Regretfully, it is the rare exception that former lovers who felt such deep passion for each other can they learn to enjoy a platonic relationship. I could not do that, guilty as charged.
I really miss this time in history. They harmonize (his group of singers) so well...wish we could bring back this type of style.
I just heard this song on a 1978 recording of Casey Kasem. Love this song, it was in my head all day.
One of the greatest "post-breakup" songs ever written. Its helped me a lot during those periods.
What a kick ass song. Nobody will ever be a great as this man and his music....
this song brings back memories of my old friends from elementary school.around 1976 i think thats about the year the song came out.love to listen to todds songs.
Love this song; love it. I've listened to this for 20 years and it doesn[t get old.
LOVE IT
Anyone, who can not appreciate this, does not know, what real music is all about... feeling good
Beautiful song, beautiful voice and beautiful man! I've been hooked for 30 years!
In my eyes, Todd Rundgren is a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer.
Todd is TOO Good for the RNRHOF ❤
THIS SONG IS YEARS OLDER THAN ME BUT DAMN...IT ALWAYS PLAYS AUTOMATICALLY ON MY HEAD...OVER AND OVER AGAIN...
can there be any better songwriter in the whole world??? this is perfection
You cannot find better musicians or music anywhere. Look back to the 1970's ... an awesome era musically.
There is nothing like a man and his piano....as they say in New England....Todd is WICKED AWESOME!!!!!!!!
Will live on forever! He is a genius with lyrics and music...he has my vote forever...
This is how I remember seeing Todd all those years ago...Nice
I think I was about 11 or 12 when this song came out. One of the most heartfelt songs I've ever heard. All I can type is: "I'm glad I'm married, now."
The majesty of Todd Rundgren brought me here!

WoW Diane my birthday is September 10th. That was nice what you wrote. GREAT SONG ❤
I was a teenager when these songs were written. I can't believe I forgot about them. This guy really sang well.
This man's talent brought me here.
people seemed more caring back then ,,music and life was more simple and easy ,it should be like that now,,I wish we could bring it back now
Vanilla Sky brought me to this song. Opened up to the world of Todd Rundgren. So thankyou Mr Cameron Crowe for not only making of cinemas most beautiful films but for helping shape my musical taste. Heck Vanilla Sky changed everything for me.

Todd is one of the best song writers and singers of our time.
Heard it on the radio yesterday - had forgotten how good it was and went looking for it this morning to add to my favourites. Great song!
One of the greatest "Word-Smiths" of all time. Thank you Todd.
Todd Rundgren is the stuff Angels are made of.
In loving memory for the one who was first a colleague, then a friend, a confident. And much more... Before we had to break up while our love was growing.
So long. I wish you a better luck in your next work.

Man...what an amazing talent he is. Saw some recent interview vids of him and he still has his sense of humor.
That must have been the most amazing concert ever! I love Tracy, too!
I will always like Todds music til I die!

I co-sign. The beauty of the inflections makes me choke up. Please check out Todd Rundgren and Daryl Hall singing this song. Sublime!
Well said 456japan ,.. this man plays all the instruments during his recordings .. drums ..piano ...sax... guitar ..bass and the list goes on ... what a talent !
Just saw Todd Rundgren at a little venue in Annapolis, Maryland last night - brilliant - he is still amazing!
