My aunt was in Berlin during the collapse. Like most women, she never spoke about her experiences, but everyone in the family knew what had happened, just not how often. She was what was then called hysterical, today it would be called post-traumatic stress disorder.

My grandmother was a child in Berlin during the fall. She told me how the Russians made them keep their apartment doors open or unlocked. My great grandmother disguised her a lot younger then she was (she was actually 11) and my great grandmother made herself look a lot older with ash. My grandmothers elderly grandad was there through some and would shoo the soldiers away when they would come in drunk saying “only old ladies and babies here.” Absolutely get what the SS did was evil and they were monsters, but children and innocent always are the ones that suffer from others crimes. My grandmother also said when she was little she had to stay with nuns while she was very sick and had to be quarantined. She said they were incredibly lovely. When the Russian’s came she found out when she was older the nunnery was attacked and the nuns were murdered and raped. War is sad, anyone that messes with children, no matter what side need to be strung up.

The Eastern Front was pure hatred and fight to the death. We in the West tend to think that D-Day and the Allied advance through France were pivotal. but it was the cauldron in the East that defeated Germany. The price the German civilians paid was horrendous and inexcusable, but it was also inevitable after what the Germans did in their ascendency. One cannot underestimate the animosity the Russians felt for the Germans, an animosity well deserved. I can sympathize with the German civilians who suffered at the hands of the Russians, but I also remember how these same civilians elected and supported Hitler. Actions have consequences.

When I hear such stories, I develop an attitude or belief that it’s only the enemy soldiers that do the raping etc, but sadly it’s our allies too, and am reminded of my uncle (a New Zealander) who fought in the Vietnam war alongside our allied US soldiers, and he witnessed atrocities committed by these US soldiers of raping the women and pillaging in each village as they progressed throughout the war. My uncle came away when the war ended with such a disgust of the US and wanted nothing to do with anything of the US, for example, my cousins weren’t allowed to watch US tv programs! I don’t know military ways, but it seems ALL soldiers have a right to commit such horrendous crimes against women during wartime, which to me is just diabolical! War is usually started by pathological men and fought by men, yet it’s the women & children that suffer the most!

A majority of American woman remained unaffected at home while they voted for a president who forcefully drafted American men sending them to their death in Vietnam. Around 60% of women favored Johnson. Yet only 10,000 woman took responsibility for their elected officials in Vietnam.

    • @xman666soad
      @xman666soad 10 місяців тому +13

You need to understand why high command allowed these things in Vietnam.
A short summary is that because the tours were only 1 year long on average, most combat vets were leaving as new recruits were coming in to replenish.
This lead to a lot of “fragging” if you don’t know what that means look it up.
So in order for the platoon leaders to keep order and prevent themselves from being fragged by their own privates a lot of atrocities were “allowed” but not because USA command wanted that, it was to keep the military personnel from defecting or worse mutinying.
Not saying your uncle isn’t justified in his hate or disgust with those soldiers, but it’s not as simple as saying:
US soldiers were raping women and killing babies.
If those soldiers hadn’t been “allowed” to relieve some stress from losing friends, being on the front lines, fighting an enemy that you can’t see, being away from families, and honestly a lot of them were criminals inscripted into the military to avoid civilian justice, I know of a handful of stories myself of people being taken by military out of jail or prison to avert criminal record.
Yes Vietnam was messed up, we shouldn’t have been there in the first place but imagine how much worse things would have been for the military or our country if some of the things had not been allowed.
There’s only so many times you can hang soldiers for this as punishment before they turn on you.
      They weren’t professional soldiers.
      They were basically mercenaries.

I lived in Germany for much of the 60s, from the ages of 11 to 17. My dad was military and stationed there and when he retired, continued to work there for an agency of the U.S. Govt. I was curious about WWII history and living there piqued that interest. To my mother’s great discomfort, I’d come home from the PX newsstand with paperbacks that were coming out at the time (1961-62) with what I suppose were the early wave of holocaust survivors’ accounts. They freaked me out but I could not stop reading them. It was a light bulb moment for me as a 13 year old that the world could be insanely brutal and I realized if the Nazis could do it, it could happen again in other places. As a result, I could never looked at adult authority in the same away as I had. Another book that I always saw at the PX newsstand was entitled The Big Rape. I was a little embarrassed to browse it at the newsstand, but I finally did. It was nothing but harrowing accounts of survivors of what this woman describes. More brutal insanity from the other side. I don’t know if that book is still in print.

But they said that the English did not do it. An English man who fought through France and Germany told that there was no reason for something like that. All one had to do was make friends. His unit would come to an area where the German Army fell back from and evacuated.
They would meet the civilian population and give out gifts, Cans of food, meet, chocolate, wine, cigarettes, whiskey if you had it. The people they gave it to could either use it or barter with it. Many showed the English soldiers their appreciation.

This was the education I actually got when I flunked out of college and spent the year just walking through the library and reading. When you read actual accounts of war stories, you would almost think that war is done just so women could be raped. Its said there wasn't a woman between four and eighty four that wasn't raped as the russian army came through. For those wanting to laud america, in 1994 the Japanese government was begging the US army to get out of Japan because they were raping so many girls.
I know veterans who laughed at Saving Private Ryan and then crying when they realized people actually thought that was realistic. You have to SERIOUSLY hunt down war stories, and when you find them, you wish youd never heard them. But you go around youtube and you'll see tons of these stories mostly aimed at other cultures, as if sexual violence never happens amongst europeans and those of european descent.

Utter nonsense. Rapes in Japan are crimes not war crimes. Big difference. These crimes ARE prosecuted by the U S or by Japanese authorities under Status of Forces agreements. This is true wherever U.S. soldiers are stationed. Soldiers commit crimes at home or in foreign countries in numbers far, far fewer than occur in our civil society. No society wants foreign soldiers on their soil when not necessary. It is a simple fact that American soldiers are welcomed in most places we serve. We are a part of the society and culture. They have male friends and neighbors. They date and marry foreign women. Sometimes they settle permanently in those countries. They transfer American culture and pick up foreign culture. We have bad citizens in and out of the military. The overwhelming majority of soldiers comport themselves well and represent their country well. Of course there are elements from any country that don’t want us there. Usually their radical leftist elements. They are just as mindless as our radical left.

I've never been to war, Thank God! The fact is that this happens all too frequently. This happens in all wars, regardless of your nationality. many time our military leaders ignore this because of the enormous stress put on young soldiers fighting a war that someone else started. I am proud of our armed forces and the Men and Woman who serve. Many times, they are put into a position they may did not ask for or understand. But is important to know that war should not be taken lightly and used only when absolutely necessary such as self-defense. "The enemy changed his attitude toward German prisoners," one senior Wehrmacht officer reported. "They are now usually being maltreated and shot."[54] By the time Böhme was relieved as Plenipotentiary Commanding General in December 1941, between 20,000 and 30,000 civilians had been killed in German reprisal shootings.

No one likes defending the indefensible .
What happened to innocent German women is appalling .
However viewing these crimes in an overall context - we should say the following :
' The US Air Force & the RAF killed more than ONE MILLION German civilians
from 1940 to 1945 - with bomber raids which had often more than 1,000 Planes '
---- A Berlin quip of the time went somthing like -- ' It was better to have a FAT
Russian fall on your Belly - than a bomb from an American B17 - on your Head '
60,000 Berlin women were raped by Russian troops . ( Probably much more . )
One Million German civilians were killed by Allied bombers .
23 Million Russians were killed by the Germans from 1941 - 1945.
WAR is a HORRIBLE BUSINESS .
WE must do everything we can to prevent it .

The Russians behaved like animals during their campaign to capture Berlin. However, they were only echoing the behavior of the Germans during the invasion of the Soviet Union. The German troops set the ground rules for that war, and the German civilians paid for it. When you charge into another country, raping and killing civilians en masse on your way, you had better make sure that later on the tables don't get turned.

Absolutely. Both are bad. The Russians were more indiscriminate, the German more cold-blooded in planning it. However, you can read books about German atrocities in Germany. There is a guilt from the last two generations in Germany.
In Russia, there are no books in official circulation about the crimes of the Red army. If you talk about the atrocities committed by the Red army, this, you can be incarcerated for 'discrediting the military.'T here is no guilt. As a result, the Russians are doing it again.
If you are going to make an analogy, [lease give the full story rather than fall back on cliches.

Yes, what the Soviets did to the Germans was horrible, but the Wehrmacht and the SS visited the same behavior and other atrocities on Soviet civilians during their invasion of the Soviet Union. That doesn't excuse it, but it is understandable. It was all about revenge.

    • @steenjinks7359

Rape was punishable by death in the SS. When Germany broke through to Hungary, the Hungarian women thought angels had come to save them from the nightmare bring inflicted on them by the Russians. Same with most placed. France and Holland didn't experience anything like that under German occupation, they only experienced it when the allied forces pushed Germany back, and the American GI's had their way with anyone they wished.

@@steenjinks7359 Plenty of stories out there of the atrocities committed by Germany on the Soviet Union. And it wasn’t just rapes. My point is, Germany wasn’t blameless. Soviet behavior was atrocious, but they had all seen the devastation of their land and people caused by Germany. They wanted revenge. Rape has been a weapon used by armies through history. And while you point out that it was “illegal” as it was in the Soviet army, it wasn’t always enforced.

America is born of the gun. We fought a revolution to gain independence, and we have only gotten better at fighting since. My Father flew bombers and later fighter jets, and I had an automatic rifle, and missile launchers. It's actually a genetic factor of the XY chromosomes. Barbarism just wears a different uniform now. I can say this,in my 8 years of duty,I never raped anyone. My missions were target specific, and never occupied any location for anything more than the time it took to accomplish the mission. Rape was never a part of any mission my orders specified.
