For the better part of two decades, Hartford maintained a zoo called Sherwood Forest at Keney Park. For a time it prospered, in public acceptance and attendance, but then went into sad decline. Vandals took over and animals were mistreated. At least one was stoned to death. The zoo was closed in 1976.

They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What may seem an eyesore to one person, just might be a beautiful masterpiece to another. There are places beloved by communities and protected in the hearts of those that hold their memories of its tattered hallways and decayed rooms dear. This is the way that we feel when we explore places that have been forgotten by time. Left to rot and decay and only holding the silent whispers of what once was. We know that there are people out there with malicious intent toward these places that we venture into. It saddens us when we see the filth and destruction they leave behind, but we want to make something very clear… We are explorers and lovers of history. We in no way, shape or form condone the criminal activities that take place in the historical decaying places that we document. Social media has brought many of these places to the limelight, but the intention is to show the beauty and mystery of abandonment. Not to invite trouble. Trouble will find its way on its own and to say that the peaceful documentation of these places leads to criminal activity, is mind blowing. We have met so many amazing fellow explorers in our travels and are so thankful and humbled by the positive responses we have received. We know that this type of exploration is not for everyone…many people don’t understand why we find such beauty in decay, we can only explain it as a beautiful journey into the past. We invite you to watch our explores and come along as we visit these amazing places. As for the criminal activity that occurs, those individuals are responsible for their own actions. It is a terrible part of our society, but reality, nonetheless. Thank you for taking the time to read this and for loving this location just as much as we do. We hope that through this video, the memories held within will remain.

I fondly remember walking to Sherwood Forest zoo with my son.
Hartford's Northend was the most beautiful and fun filled part of the city.

In 1960, When I was in the kindergarten, my teacher, Ms Ansoven had us bring money every week to contribute towards the new zoo in Keeney Park. I was very proud when it opened. Of course, very saddened when it closed.

This comment is exactly the reason why we do what we do. To bring back memories from places that were once loved by so many. Thank you for taking the time to write your thoughts and to tell us your memories of this wonderful piece of history.

The zoo contained sheep, bears, deer, reindeer, wolves, llamas, bobcats, otters, and sea lions, among other critters. There were pony rides. Girl guides, called the “Zooettes,” gave tours.

A great explore Guys! It’s wild that these places are so close to the city. I grew up in Jacksonville FL and the Jax Zoo was just minutes from that very large city. This zoo is much smaller and more rurally designed, but it’s like quickly leaving one world to enter another. Very interesting, walking thru, with just your imagination as your guide. As always, you presented such a great video. You two in conversation, being the stars!! Thank you so much for taking us along!!❤️ Smooches!!

I remember going to the this Zoo when i was a kid. I lived in a house in Hartford that was in walking distance of of the Zoo. Me and my friends would go there to hang out, see the animals and enjoy the festivities in the Zoo. I think it should be brought back so that the inner city kids who don't get to see live animals of different types learn how they live and enjoy the experience of Zoo.

There was a clip in the video where it was a window or encasement for an animal that swims. If I remember, that was a pool for seals. It was on of my favorite to watch. Also I think I saw a bird cage in your video as well. Yes, the Zoo had bears as well. I think am going to take a tour of this site and explore the possibility for a reopen. @@JMExplorations

When I was growing up in the late 1970's this place was already closed, but they would find dead humans, dumped in the park all the time, the average was 1 to 3 a week. people thought you were NUTS for going into that park..it was bad, for a while.
The Zoo was opened on August 19,1963- and closed in 1974. The reasons given for closure were vandalism and low visitation. There was some talk about bringing a zoo back in 1996 but it never came to be.
The zoo had many different animals from seals, otters, wolves, reindeer, and skunks. There were multiple enclosures, primarily for mammals, and even an aquatic viewing exhibit. The original hope of the park was to try bringing a piece of nature into the inner city. But with this hope came great tragedy. There unfortunately were countless incidents during the park’s tenure involving severe animal cruelty, vandalism, and criminal activity, some truly heinous acts were committed here. The zoo was eventually forced to close its doors for good in 1974.

What a place to be in the middle of the city and still hidden like that, so cool. City zoos of the before days are such an interesting historical aspect now I’d like, how entertainment and urban landscapes have changed. Thankfully bears get some generally larger habitats these days! 🐻 Awesome video!!

I knew it. I fucking new it. When I was a kid my family used to go from Hartford to Windsor to go fishing in the CT river. We always cut through keney park. I remember coming across the zoo as a kid. I would tell my friends that we found an abandoned zoo deep in the woods in keney park . They all thought I was crazy and laughed at me. I got the evidence now
I found a complete skeleton of an animal in a cage. I always wanted to take it. I went back a couple years later, like 8years old, but it was gone. I think someone took it becaythere was nothing left

Really great explore. It seems like a random place to have a zoo but I'm pretty sure the enclosure with the pump and viewing window would have been for penguins. Too small for seals (I hope), I've seen something similar in the UK. Sorry I haven't been around, I have a lot of catching up to do.
