Seymour definitely became twisted after his mother’s death. And it traumatized him. Hence his belief in “saving” Kinoc wiping out most of the Ronso and in the final battle saying, “Since you were gracious enough to defeat Yunalesca” in my opinion, Seymour would’ve “saved” Yunalesca as well if he was to become sin.
Regarding the question of Seymour's motives for pursuing Yuna, it is possible that he finds her attractive/appealing, especially considering her lineage and popularity. However, the main motivation is purely utilitarian. His goal is to become Sin and destroy the world. This requires him to become the Fayth for the Final Summoning. He knows that he must become a Summoner's guardian and forge a bond with them. He figures the easiest way to do this is marriage. We only hear of two other active Summoners in Spira. One is male and the other is already involved with her guardian.
Seymour actually creeps me out to be honest. He comes across like a cult leader with a friendly, non-threatening appearance at first. However, it becomes very apparent that something is wrong when you really listen to his dialogue. After the illusion is shattered, his true, twisted self emerges. This just reminds me of so many historical cults that use the same manipulation tactics.
I really like that you mentioned his proposal to Yuna as an aspect of his character - it’s something that’s not talked about all that much from what I’ve seen, besides the vicarious jealousy that the player feels for Tidus through it. In my opinion, he is both using her as part of his plan, AND attracted to/drawn to her. I think in part it’s why he chooses her, and I think there’s an Oedipal complex present in Seymour’s character related to this. Having lost his mother from a young age and spent modt of his life in isolation, the appeal of Yuna as a self-sacrificing woman of power is probably pretty significant for him, in a sub-conscious attempt to reclaim the mother he lost in such a traumatic way, not to mention his killing of his father - all very much a parallel to the story of Oedipus and the psychological phenomenon associated with it. He also draws parts of his grandiosity into it, comparing them to Yunalesca and Zaon, and as mixed-races (he as half-Guado and her as half-Al Bhed) as if in an attempt to draw them together with some concept of “destiny” attached with his vision of becoming Sin and “saving” Spira. I’ve been replaying X and X-2 and I love listening to your thoughts and analysis on the elements of the world. Overall great analysis!
Thanks for the comment and sorry for the delayed reply. Yes, the marriage proposal is interesting and I always wondered what the reason for it was. I like your perspective, and looked at from an Oedipal perspectivethere are definitely correlations between Yuna and the lost-mother. As such its one of the few glimpses of the game where we might empathise with Seymour, and the early losses he endured.
I disagree if Yevon still has a human consciousness inside that tick of a body he is definitely a villian. I know how he started out but at some point the whole mass genocide and human sacrifice kinda gets rid of any sort of moral ambiguity. Hell at least Kuja was able to realize he was wrong before he died.
@@AlleywayJack Two year old comment but since I’m listening to this video wanna say I do the same :) I rarely “watch” any youtube video. I usually only do if I’m watching nature documentaries, news, or a slime review lolol. Anything that’s like discussing lore, information, opinions, true crime, etc, I just listen to. Even with ASMR I don’t ever watch it, I just wanna listen to it while I game or as I’m getting ready to sleep.
Seymour is well used to invertedly introduce the themes of Tidus and Yuna's relationship. When Seymour is proposing to Yuna, he analogies their possible marriage to Yunalesca and her spouse. That is what Yuna and Tidus' relationship becomes at the end, though Tidus is Yunalesca. Characters like Seymour exist, less to be interesting in their own right, but more to develop Tidus and Yuna.
I just discovered your channel and I love you FFX video! 😍😍😍😁 Keep the videos coming! If you can put some of the FfX music in the background like another channel I listen to, I’ll have another playlist to fall asleep to. 😊
There's symbolism in his theme, too. It has a harp, a violin and a choir, which give off eerie, crazy and ghostly vibes, respectively. Also, notice we fight Seymour four times throughout the game, and four equals death in Japanese culture.
Love your videos so i was going back and watching your analysis of my fave FF game (X). This is another great vid, but i did notice you mentioned that it's not explicitly stated that Seymour's mother is dying. Maybe someone already commented on this, but i think this conclusion comes from the flashback cutscene at Baaj when Seymour is crying and telling her that he doesnt want to go through with the Final Summoning, telling her that he just needs her to stay with him. She says she "doesnt have much time left" anyway or something to that effect, hence her plan to become his final Aeon. Considering the fact that Seymour would likely die as well, it's still a pretty awful plan to hatch for your kid, but there we are, haha.
Great work as always. I didn't notice the recurring mirror image theme between the main character and one of the main villain. And it's definitely something I didn't notice in the relationship between Tidus and Seymour. On the subject of video footage, I think you should choose between going full audio (like most of your older vids) or try to really complement your discourses with a well-thought montage in order to create some kind of video essay. It's a lot more work but I think it could make great content. If you would go full audio, I'd personnaly appreciate to be able to download the audio feed in order to listen to it without using UA-cam. I think your content would work great as podcast. Anyway, keep up the good work !
Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it! And yeah I think I'll need to choose one or the other between audio/Video for consistency. Regarding podcasts, this has been on my mind for awhile but I haven't really looked at any platforms yet. I've also reached out to some other creators to gauge interest in a discussion format but it's just an idea at the moment.
I don't get it, if Seymour had defeated Sin as his mother wanted him to, he would have died. A "normal" aeon why not, but the final summing? How can his mother want that?
Yeah pretty crazy. I think her reasoning was if Seymour is seen to be a summoner - someone willing to sacrifice themselves for the good of all mankind - then people would love him for such a selfless act rather than revile him for being a cross-breed of Guado and human. However, as you say, by encouraging his pilgrimage to win the hearts of Spira, she was driving him towards an inevitable self-sacrifice... albeit a sacrifice that would see her son immortalised and forever remembered by two formerly conflicted races.
I must say, you're brilliant! I've watched several of your videos and I have never such great intellectual synopsis of Final Fantasy characters before. It's very interesting and easy to follow. Keep doing the videos, the content is better than other more popular channels with 100k + subscribers! = D

Amazing Character. The only Person that is more amazing is his hair stylist. But serios: He was twisted, he was anoying, he was a good Villan. P.s. Sorry if my English sucks. I'm from Germany.
I always kind of viewed Seymore as the *real* villain/ final boss of FF10. I found his last boss to be more difficult that Jecht, and Yu Yeavon. He had all the motivation typical of a final fantasy Villian. Jecht was... kind of one, but he was more of an analogue of the Tragic hero... or at least a redemption story. Yu Yeavon could have been a much better villain mind you, if he had had much more seeding there was a little, but I never got the sense that there was a person behind the entirety of Yeavon (beyond the maesters) untill he was introduced right at the end game.
I read somewhere that Yu Yevon became more like an automaton that only existed to summon, losing all of his former self in the transition to becoming Sin's summoner. I would like to know more on the backstory as to how he created Sin. I'm guessing it was some kind of perversion of the practice that required more than a typical transition to fayth. His ability to possess aeons was the key to Sin's cycle. Like Sin was an abomination of summoning but it never says that or where Yu Yevon learned to possess other aeons.
Hey man adding video footage is unnecessary and would just take up more of your time when making these. Honestly just stick to what you do. I appreciate the podcast format

You could like the game play or not, talking about Final fantasy x /2,but the story, Yuna feel something for a guy who died 1000 years ago, because she wear Lenne dressphere? It's an interesting idea, the fact that, spheres can do things like that, but the story it's still just a bad copy of Yuna and Tidus... Just doesn't compare to Final fantasy X, the story just it's like there isn't one, good for those who like it, it's a tragic story ok, but nothing that could deserve more then 5 or 6 points on 10 at best...
@@francescoberardini7376 I give X-2 at least 7.5~8 out of 10. The story "isn't there" because sin was killed in X, so X-2 is like a long epilogue to X, which is welcome IMO.
