  • My Volvo XC90 has a radio fault for a number of years ... it comes on for a short period and then either goes off or changes channels without touching anything.. finally I decide to get my friend the auto electrician to try and fix it

    Radio was turning on with no sound but turning off immediately. Replaced capacitors in ICM.
    Replaced radio unit with display with a 2nd hand one. Same prob. Then the Amp. Same problem..
    Turned out to be a broken and corroded power wire leading to the amp under the seat. Took 6 months to trouble shoot. Radio in and out of the car 20 times....
    Happy now though. Good luck

      Hi! Was this a xc90? Same problem here. The premium sound messege comes, and then goes black after 2 sec. Maybe i should check same thing. Under the passanger seat? Do you have to loosen the seat?

    Check for water under the drivers seat (amplifier connections) where all wires go.

    When the camera pulled up and the whole rear of the vehicle was dismantled, I knew this wouldn't end with a solution😂. I have no sound in my front speakers, hope I have better success. Thanks guys.

    my 2004 xc90 (love this car) has similar problem, steering wheel on the left side (florida here). it goes on and off like it had a mind of its own. now, if i pull fuse 2 (30AMP) and leave it off for few minutes, then push it back in, nothing happens (not right away anyway). however, if i drive the car for like 10-20 minutes after that, everything goes back to normal, for 2-3 car restarts. then it gets back to this twilight mode where no matter what you do, unit seems to be pushing up daisies. will try all your advices here, thanks!

      I was never able to sort the problem so I fitted a separate radio and fed it through the cars speakers but then eventually another problem developed which kept putting the vehicle into 'limp' mode and even Volvo could not determine what the problem was so I was forced to sell it. It went off to Russia where I guess they use it for spares -- but it was one of the best cars I ever had .. brilliant at so many things and a fantastic 'all rounder do everything vehicle'

      I regret that we were unable to sort this problem and finally simply fitted a new radio into the glove box and wired it through the existing speakers .. but finally I had to sell the car as more electrical problems developed which even Volvo could not sort out ..sad really because it is a great car. - Chris

      I have the premium Dolby Pro Logic II System. But Mine has the same issue. One of my freinds that works for Volvo told me it’s an issue with the voltage control for the microprocessor. So it causes it to do exactly what your experiencing. I have to get it replaced but one day it just started working again. But it’s still throwing a code saying it’s not giving enough voltage to the microprocessor. You need to replace the stereo section of the ICM.

    If your radio went out recently first thing to check is your 37th fuse located to the left of steering wheel between the door. It is called INFOTAINMENT. Pull fuse, reinsert. If not fixed, replace fuse and try again. If still nothing, it is the system itself

    • @myverynow
      @myverynow 5 років тому

      with right steering wheel, it is more on the right of it, but basically same thing. for your information, all xc90(s) 2003-2014 have symmetrical fuse doors, between the steering wheel and the adjacent door.

    Amazing that no one has come up with solution with AM/FM radio tuner not working, while CD works fine. I changed out radio head, no difference, lights up for a second when selecting radio, but CD works fine, display works fine. Checked AMP for typical water damage, dry as a bone as I have cleaned out drain tubes every year. Pulled out AMP fuse, and CD still worked, so that is extremely strange, didn't hear any difference in quality of sound on CD's, pulled out rear tuner module, and when disconnected, CD now also does not work? So anyone know the wiring for MOST, does it go to radio head first, then back to tuner, then to AMP, curious.

      Did you try replacing the FM/am antenna amplifier in the back? I heard that may be the issue. I was going to try replacing the antenna amplifier with a working one from eBay that is $20, but it sounds like you already tried that without much luck.
      From reading forums, the S60 sedan (not sure about xc90) has 2 FM antennas, 1 in the bumper and one on the back window (the defogger grid), the purpose being better reception. Also, I wonder if a fuse has blown for that FM/am antenna amplifier.
      There was a technical service bulletin to fix poor AM reception by adding a copper strip to the antenna amplifier, but my car's problem is poor FM signal. FM radio is entirely quiet in the garage, but outside the strong stations will come in but cut in and out.

      Same problem, the AM/FM band would stop working intermittently to start, now it will not come back on. I replaced the capacitors which one video suggested, no luck, replaced radio head, same problem, so it is not the radio control PC or the control button modules just so others don't waste money on replacing radio.
      I checked amplifier, no water, connection were clean, no luck, the CD works fine, so in all this time I have yet to find anyone who knows what problem is. The rear module is only thing I haven't changed, so what does this unit do, anyone know?
      Thanks

      interesting to hear that you have the same problem .. Originally the Volvo garage told me on the phone that it may be caused by the fact I had recently had a tow bar fitted and even though the kit was purchased from Volvo, if fitted incorrectly, it could affect the radio ???? - but when I sent the vehicle to them for investigation, they claimed it was the control unit (that is in the back of the vehicle in the roof) and wanted £800 for new unit. _ I chose the route of investigation as seen in the video but ended with no luck. - incidentally, there is a company that repairs Volvo radios BUT though they fix all types of Volvo radios, they WILL NOT TACKLE THE XC90 ones ..So I ended up fitting a separate radio in the glove box fed through the front speakers --- a compromise that was cheaper

    • @Driftdavillian

      This system uses a fiber optic buss. If any of the components in that serial chain that the beam goes through doesn't forward the beam to the next component down stream of if, the entire system will not operate. Connect Vida up to your Xc90 and it will tell you what module isn't receiving the beam indicating the failure of the upstream component in the chain. That how I fixed mine.. It was the amplifier intermittently working.

    • @Driftdavillian
      @Driftdavillian 6 років тому

    hey, got another idea, we flip a coin (which goes first, i can talk to trump here, you talk to miss may there) and we literally incorporate sweden, nothing like a war or anything, just friendly incorporate it and make them be more responsible for maintaining the most beloved car in the world. what about that guys, who can make sweden first? we can make it the 51st state, you perhaps would want to swap with ireland (would love that, so is ireland). please advise. will only take a phone call, we're all civilized nations, but volvo cars (notice that it is not volvo but volvo cars) perhaps needs a boost from uncle sam, something friendly like "you do it now, or all your upper executive goes to jail" for sabotaging the sweden image in the world
