Looks like plenty of room on top. I'm putting a light-bar on top my xc90 and that pocket looks like the best place to put a few switches to operate the thing. Thanks a million for making this video. Without it I would have gone mad, because I looked at the amp earlier to see the YAW control module (thank goodness there was no water there) and looked at the amp and thought, holy cow, this has to be re-wired. This video shows how to do it without any trial and error and without messing with the internal wiring and computer sensors, etc. I love UA-cam tutorials! I feel like it's cheating!
Excellent video. I might add, having worked on mine and others for some time: the console cover, grey around the gear shift "snaps" on to the wood trim panel with clips. You just reach under and pop them sideways, 4 of them, and the wood trim panel comes off very easy, this getting it out of the way . I referenced your video while installing a double dinn in my XC90. (:) Thumbs up
Hi. Firstly, great video. secondly, wanted to thank you for the detail in the video: I'm actually taking my XC90 back to a stock radio. It honestly looks like ferrets have been living behind the nasty 3rd party headhunt that's in the car at the moment. Wires have been spliced into, there's 3rd party boxes everywhere, I've removed GPS, a speaker and a mike that wasn't actually plugged into anything! You video has allowed me to work out how much work needs to be done to take it back to stock (sourcing a loom between the amp and the headhunt). So, again, thank you for the meticulous detail!
Great work 100% professional installation It's a shame that there isn't many installers like you left Thank you for the great videos Helps me out all the time
Thanks for the video I though I would have to run wires down to the amp. You guys saved me a ton of time, i'm so grateful. For saving the factory radio, All you really need is board that the wires plug into, you can remove the display and all the buttons from the board and won't get any lights, windows and sunroof still work. so all you have to shove in the bottom of the dash is the little board. I used a metra window antenna very similar and it worked well. Made it feel like a new car with all the new features.
Dean, the amount of meticulous detail that you put into your installs is absolutely amazing. I've been dealing with car audio shops in one form or another for years and have never seen the detail put into the installs compare to yours. Keep up the great work and thanks again for all of the great videos.
Master level work! I hope you get paid really well for what you do. I'm glad I watched this though as it illustrated exactly what I do not want to do (or have done to mine). I'll keep looking for other options to have bluetooth music and phone functionality. But again, you are an artist for sure!
Good Lord... That's a lot of work! Thx 4 sharing... I velcroed a JamBox Big on top of the dashboard of my 2005 XC90 to get some Bluetooth ... Been working for years though I doubt it passes Volvo safety standards ;)
Your video was 100 percent on. I forgot to disconnect the battery and got all kinds of lights on. Hopefully they clear. If I ever have to change this head unit I am going to sell the car instead. What a chore
I just bought one of these exact cars and am having to deal with this exact stuff... Thanks for this, It'll feel so good when it works, but I hate it still.
I was excited by your video to replace my 2003 Volvo XC90 radio with a double din radio, as well as the speakers. Wow, what a job this is to upgrade the speakers and wire up the radio, with Nav, Backup camera, etc. I don't know if you've done a replacement with a double din, with the bells and whistles, but it's not easy. The speaker rewiring is a task by itself. It would have been great to have the details of a double din replacement, to hook up car speed input, and parking brake, reverse, etc. Please respond if there's more help, or another source that would be helpful.
@@FiveStarCarStereoInc I got curious and took the button paddles off each side and just fitted screen section with the 2 connectors and no trouble lights, Thank you.

Sheer insanity, but fantastic video and skills. A friend is about to buy a 2009 and an installer refused to do the stereo upgrade job. I've been telling my buddy we can do it ourselves. After watching your video I'm absolutely scared but up for the challenge. Don't know how my friend is going to feel after watching your video. Guess I better learn how to solder!
12:45 the actual FM antenna is part of what is known as an “Antenna Farm“. This is a flexible green circuit board in the top back of the roof above the tailgate. If you look carefully, you can find a small silver metal box which is the power amp for the FM part of the circuit board. The roof of the car is electronically transparent in a non-metallic panel about 5 feet wide and 1 1/2 feet from front to back. All of the vehicle antennas are printed on this circuit board.
Nice work I don't want to know how much $ but I would like to know how many labor hours you charged for this install I must say it was very clean and professional keep up the good work
They now make a wiring kit with direct plug in harnesses that plug into the factory harness, so no more cutting. They also have an antenna adapter that allows you to keep the factory antenna, as well as a wiring kit to bypass the factory amp and still utilize the steering wheel controls with the aftermarket stereo. I was looking into install kits earlier today because the factory stereo doesn't even turn on, hasn't since I bought this car a few months ago. I bought a decent bluetooth speaker to get by using the music on my phone, but it just doesn't have the same sound quality as an actual set of speakers, so I decided to finally get another stereo for it, and had to look into install kits to make sure it was doable, because I heard somewhere that alot of people couldn't replace the factory unit due to no install kits being available, but now I found out they are, so that's a relief knowing that I can put a nice system in here. While I was looking into the install kits I found all the other goodies that make the swap so much simpler.
Well, you really did a great job. If I understand correctly, you leave everything in the car and you just need pretty much the speakers and power for the new stereo right? Well, you are saying that you loose the center speaker because normal car stereos do not have more than 4 speaker connections. Now how about if you leave the old system up and running just hiding in the "underground" would it be possible that you can leave the center speaker connected to the old system and you can keep all your car beeps like PDC warnings, seat belt warnings and such thru this center speaker?
Update to my last post, as i have some decent diagnostic software i thought i would see exactly which parts of the original radio need to be still connected, (and i struggled to find room to squeeze the whole lot in behind as you have done) So it turns out the only part that needs to remain plugged in is the centre part with the display, you can unplug and leave out both side parts with the buttons on, they can be a but fiddly to plug back in, patience and a gentle push with a small screwdriver works. Just make sure they are the right way up, they are very small ribbon type plugs.
hey i have a factory 'premium sound' radio system and it has become intermittent. will this let me use an aftermarket unit? i am assuming the replacement radio does not power or utilize the factory amp at all.
@@robbiewilson157 that issue is usually the icm itself or another part of the most loop that is not functioning correctly. vida would tell you which part. that part needs to work right or your stereo would still be intermitant

Travis, if you're still around, can you tell me a unit you would recommend. I love the sound from my Volvo premium but the radio is dying. I'm not interested in a ton of bling, just a good radio with Bluetooth.
Very professionally done! Excellent work! These Volvos have either 8-speaker or 12-speaker (premium). The after market head unit usually has 4 channels - FL, FR, RL, RR. Except for the central speaker (in the premium version) can you confirm the rest of the speakers are all working? I have the 8-speaker systems. The front door has 1 speaker + 1 tweeter. The rear door has 1 speaker and there is one speaker in the trunk where the seat belt for the third row is. Just want to make sure all 8 speakers will work with the aftermarket radio. Thanks!
Dean , i have every thing needed for the headswap...But, what would you use to retain steering wheel controls on an 08 Volvo XC90 i will be installing a Pioneer AVH-4800bs could you also send me the PDF ....a Huge thank you in advance
matt feith thank you. Using just radio power no. It would give you a low ohm load on whatever channel you put it on. If you add something like the Pioneer GM -D1004 you could. The amp could power the 4 speakers and the radio could power the center channel. You could mount the amp where the factory amp is located and use the factory amps power to feed it.
i have installed systems in at least 15 xc90's but not once have we used the oem speakers. have you guys ever had issues with them being 2 ohm? here in memphis i automatically assume (i shouldn't but i do) its a premium car so change the speakers also. you did an amazing job i enjoy your videos. i manage a family owned shop in memphis, tn Stere One . keep up the good work
Eldridge Henry, II thank you, no we have never had a problem with the speaker. Most of the installs on these keep the factory speakers just like this one.
Great job I love this video very nice and clean. I have a quick question for you ,Do you know what color is the 2 wires from the steering wheel control ???? Somebody said the green is the volume and white is the track but didn't work in my Volvo.......
dude. I found a 2007 XC90 w 58k miles for 6k in top shape and i am about to pull the trigger, has 7 seats and from what I can tell is a reliable car and i am rolling a toyota solara w 320 k miles on it so would be upgrading the stereo for sure. Whats the estimate / cost and going for a double din w reverse camera etc . and why would we lose the center channel? lemme know, yall videos shares so much insight i really appreciate you guys sharing this insider detail even though know it may feel easy although intensive i know 100% i would F it up if i tried myself.
Just FYI you can remove the controls to the left and right of the original display screen and it won't cause any errors on the dashboard.. much easier than trying to tape them all up and find space to squeeze it into!
Nice video Thank you so much for that Great information I have one more Big favor to ask ........................ Drum roll ................... How do I find ..... and .....replace all the speakers in my Volvo 2008 XC-90?
Super job! I I am in the process of putting a JVC double din in my daughter's XC90, what do you do with the fibre optics cables that go to the CD player? Since the CD is now redundant I do not want to get the car 'mad' at me and throw a warning light fit.
Did the same to my wifes 06 couple days ago. But i didnt mess with the amp i just splice the wires from behind the radio.i installed a double din with back up camera its a pita .dont splice the wires for the cig lighter for power theres three wires you have to disconnect from a harness with a fiber optic that you can use so the radio can keep its memory.
When you do this install what did you do with the plug that goes into the back of the cd player? Do you just tape it up? I see that the two from the radio stayed plugged in and wrapped up in blue tape. thank you.
I just did 1 and the factory amplifier was not reconnected to any of the wiring. The new wire harness connected directly to the factory amplifier wiring plug for plug minus the fiberoptic cable. It was ran the same way to the dash and had the wiring to connect the aftermarket head unit and steering wheel controls for a double din. Was not to bad other than the passenger seat didnt work for the power to move it so had to remove the seat to do the installation. Long process to do these vehicles.
Awesome video, I was hoping you would go into the harness a little more though. What color is the illumination wire you used so the radio dims with the lights?
I'm installing a double din after watching your video. I don't intend to use any of the factory parts, replacing the amp, speakers, running all new copper wiring, so what do I need to do other than reconnect the factory amp and connect the original 3 main pieces that I shouldn't get rid of. I also got the wiring harness that you recommended at the end instead of splicing, but not sure why I need it since not using any of the factory parts. I need you to clarify for me the other connections, i.e., getting rid of fiber optic connections, connecting reverse line, mute (lower volume), brake switch, and rear camera. I intend to get power from an always on source, and a ignition switch on connection (if I need to do that). I'm trying to get this done by 17 Oct '20. Help me Obijan.
Thanks for the video. I have a 05 XC90 and put a 4200 NEX in it. Following this video. Only question is where did you ground the aftermarket antenna at? I did not see that part in the video.
Hello great video, one question I have looked thought the comments but could see an answer. What about the steering wheel controls how do you keep them?
you don't need to keep the original display screen & buttons. The issue you run into is the Low speed CAN passes through the display screen (ICM) but all you have to do is locate the two twisted pairs of white & green wires and jumper them together (i.e. white from one twisted pair to white to the other twisted pair & green to green) to complete the CAN circuit. You can take the who screen & button assembly out.
Looking at installing an Alpine Halo 11 in my 2010 XC90.... is there anything I need to look about for? Is my Volvo capable of interfacing with OBD and Maestro for on screen vehicle data on the display... and am I completely nuts for attempting this?
I quit half way through my installation months ago. I think I'm ready to pick up where I left off. It's my daily driver and I'm ready to hear some noise again
Thank you very much for the video. It saved me lot of time. I followed the instructions but i am having issue with fm transmission. There is lot of noise and only getting 2 fm stations. How do i fix it?
Five Star Car Stereo Thank you for your responses, I have an appointment in February and I'm getting the Kenwood Excelon DDX794, and I'll be sure to get a backup camera too!
Interesting vid, until watching this I didn't realise the original radio is actually only a control panel with no useable speaker cables for an aftermarket unit. Shame the stock volvo unit is so basic that this mod is really a necessity, other than a decent quality sound it has no other appeal. Nice idea to wrap the original radio components and tuck them behind.
You can by pass all that work by removing just the lcd monitor and pluging the optic wire back in it. Dont need the controls. Your power can be tapped into the power that goes into the cd player. You dont need the cd optic wires connected to avoid airbag codes. Speaker wires go from amp to the speakers so can be cut and connected to the speaker side. Doin it this way avoids all codes, and eliminates half the labor since you dont have to mess with the amp.
Love this video. Thank you. I am actually buying an xc90 this week. Your video has helped me with the few questions I had. By no means am I a professional but I have been doing my own stereos for myself on a dozen or so cars. But this will be my first euro so I was concerned. Did not catch it in the video and am struggling to find it on my own but were you able to make the steering wheel controls work with the aftermarket unit? Thanks guys
I just did a simple install on an XC70 with an ASWC-1. Volvo's illumination circuit is on the CAN bus and the AXXESS unit does not provide for that. Steering wheel controls work fine. If you want the radio to dim with the headlights, you need a more capable CAN bus module, like the InCarTec.
@@FiveStarCarStereoInc hi i checked with metra and the one they make says it fits 2007 not 2008 do you have any experience with those? should i just take the risk?? Thanks
just a quick question, have you guys done a double din stereo change on a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee before? if so please send me a link to that video. keep up the great work
Dj Gunzalez your in luck, no video but Metra makes a dash kit for that. The 95-6533b, we have used it and it is great. They do have great instructions, so you should be good.
Sorry let me try the question again. my xc90 has a factory navigation system where in the Volvo in your video has the center speaker. I'm not wanting to do anything to that part, just add a double din where the factory radio is now. Will the way you showed on your video still work? thanks for the reply!
This is pretty much the same what I did with my 9th gen accord. Burying a factory HU behind the dash is not a joke. At least this Volvo HU is not that big, unlike the one that came with the 9th gen accord.
I want to change my stock radio but my stock radio don't turn on at all so if I change it would I have power or not what can I do for the power I just bought it yesterday
Wow! I didn't realize how labor intensive this was. lol. I will definitely be paying to have this done. So can I purchase any car radio? or does it have to be a certain size?
Kevin does this eliminate and go around the factory amplifier, or does it still power the factory speakers? I would like a new head unit with Nav and backup camera for my 2007 xc90 with high performance sound. The head unit makes the car look and feel extremely dated but not having the speakers amplified would probably sound pretty bad. Thats a 4x120 amp I believe.
I'm actually glad I watched this. For a moment, I thought of doing it myself.
100% agreed

15 dislikes? How can you not like this? They must be pure haters, wow!
Incredible video. You do good work.
When you do this install what did you do with the plug that goes into the back of the cd player? Do you just tape it up? I see that the two from the radio stayed plugged in and wrapped up in blue tape. thank you.
Does this work with the existing fiber optic system? Great video by the way. You gave me everything but the kitchen sink!
+Darien Mathis you have to Bypass fiber amp
How do you bypass the amp? It's fiber optic in, correct? Have you used the Crux Radio Replacement?
What wire would be used for back up cam on a double din install
Any reason you are plugging the amplifier back in? If the speaker wires aren't connected to it, wouldn't it not be powering anything?
One other question, where did you attach the ground wire for the antenna.
So does the amp continue to work or is it left for dead? I saw you took some wires off and plugged others back in.
Love the video man you really help me out ....... I was wonder if I could shadow you for a week ?
Great video thanks, wish I lived anywhere near you so you could do mine too.
Hi, maybe an unusual question bit are there ant units you can bud and just attach to the existing wiring?
nice work. thank you. one question... which wire is the illumination wire?
Thanks for the video. I have a 05 XC90 and put a 4200 NEX in it. Following this video. Only question is where did you ground the aftermarket antenna at? I did not see that part in the video.
You can ground in many different areas. Either use an existing bolt or nut or use a self tapping screw/hex head and drill it in any where you want
Amazing work as always. Great video.
Clint L thank you
the automobile does not cost as much as this man's work
Great video, thanks for posting. Do you have instructions for installation with the Carav wiring harness?
Mark Mills sorry no, I did not write them down yet.
hi. can the steering wheel buttons also be connected? what cables must be connected?
FYI, Metra just released an install kit for the Volvo XC 90 about a month ago. Axxess AX-VL90032
Do you happen to know if it works? I am about to buy one and cant find any reviews on it unfortunately. I'm just a year late one my comment!
Any new info on this ???
Hello great video, one question I have looked thought the comments but could see an answer. What about the steering wheel controls how do you keep them?
Do you have to set the stock board to aux or anything?
you don't need to keep the original display screen & buttons.
+Jafar Partowmah thank you for this information, I can't wait to try this on the next one we get.
Five Star Car Stereo, he's correct. 35 year pro installer here.
I personally just unplug the left and right control panels from the main screen and just leave it in so there's no issues.
After that you can use the steering wheel for louder and quiter?
ottimo lavoro....buen trabajo!!
Great video 👍
Looking at installing an Alpine Halo 11 in my 2010 XC90.... is there anything I need to look about for? Is my Volvo capable of interfacing with OBD and Maestro for on screen vehicle data on the display... and am I completely nuts for attempting this?
So how many plugs go in new radio 🤔🤔 got one of these. Cars with a nackered CD
I quit half way through my installation months ago. I think I'm ready to pick up where I left off. It's my daily driver and I'm ready to hear some noise again
Excellent, شكرا من الجزائر
Thank you very much for the video. It saved me lot of time. I followed the instructions but i am having issue with fm transmission. There is lot of noise and only getting 2 fm stations. How do i fix it?
Sounds like you either did not install the antenna or it is not plugged in all the way
Or maybe you did not ground the antenna properly
Also, how would this affect the parking assist? Does the parking assist still work, or do I need to buy a backup camera to replace it?
matt feith you lose the beep beep, I would add a camera
Five Star Car Stereo Thank you for your responses, I have an appointment in February and I'm getting the Kenwood Excelon DDX794, and I'll be sure to get a backup camera too!
matt feith cool, let us know how it goes
Five Star Car Stereo or one of these incartec.co.uk/product/25-514-PDC-parking-tone-interface
@@FiveStarCarStereoInc Can you somehow keep the center speaker connected so it does the beeps?
Thanks guys
RALLIART15 this customer did not want them but the Metra makes one. Go here
axxessinterfaces.com/vehicle-fit-guide
Five Star Car Stereo thank you for the reply
I just did a simple install on an XC70 with an ASWC-1. Volvo's illumination circuit is on the CAN bus and the AXXESS unit does not provide for that. Steering wheel controls work fine. If you want the radio to dim with the headlights, you need a more capable CAN bus module, like the InCarTec.
@@FiveStarCarStereoInc hi i checked with metra and the one they make says it fits 2007 not 2008 do you have any experience with those? should i just take the risk?? Thanks
Have ? What about the parking sensors does it still work
just a quick question, have you guys done a double din stereo change on a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee before? if so please send me a link to that video. keep up the great work
Dj Gunzalez your in luck, no video but Metra makes a dash kit for that. The 95-6533b, we have used it and it is great. They do have great instructions, so you should be good.
Do all xc90s have the fiber optic wires because I have a 06 xc90 without factory navigation
What about parktronic? Are they workjn?
thanks for putting this together! I hope you can answer this for me...
will this also work for my 07 xc90 that has the factory navigation system?
Jorge Heredia sorry, I have never done the navigation radio.
Sorry let me try the question again. my xc90 has a factory navigation system where in the Volvo in your video has the center speaker. I'm not wanting to do anything to that part, just add a double din where the factory radio is now. Will the way you showed on your video still work? thanks for the reply!
Would this fit a 2011 C70? Looks like the same dash.
This is pretty much the same what I did with my 9th gen accord. Burying a factory HU behind the dash is not a joke. At least this Volvo HU is not that big, unlike the one that came with the 9th gen accord.
arempee26 yeah, we used to have to hide the Civic radio because the alarm was built into the radio. Something never change
Where are you located? Need my XC90 done like this!
I want to change my stock radio but my stock radio don't turn on at all so if I change it would I have power or not what can I do for the power I just bought it yesterday
What color r the speaker wires because I want to keep the factory radio
Wow! I didn't realize how labor intensive this was. lol. I will definitely be paying to have this done. So can I purchase any car radio? or does it have to be a certain size?
is there any way to transform the optical radio antenn signal to fit a new stereo, some kind of box or something?, great video anyway :)
Patrik Rydell not that I have ever seen. The cost would be crazy though. Other optical converts for radios are 300/400$
Kevin does this eliminate and go around the factory amplifier, or does it still power the factory speakers? I would like a new head unit with Nav and backup camera for my 2007 xc90 with high performance sound. The head unit makes the car look and feel extremely dated but not having the speakers amplified would probably sound pretty bad. Thats a 4x120 amp I believe.
