DIY Sticky Wax for crafting and casting.

- I needed some sticky wax for a project, and since I couldn't find any locally I decided to make my own. This isn't the kind of sticky wax for surfboards, although it might work for that, this is for arts and crafts projects. It's useful for holding things in place temporarily, especially on smooth shiny surfaces where regular wax won't stick.

Cool stuff. I actually made this unintentionally before, and decided it would be perfect for connecting wax pieces for lost wax casting.

@@Convolutedtubules I'm still collecting equipment, I recently picked up a used kiln I intend to turn into a burnout oven. I'll probably be using resin prints for the master but I'm still figuring out resin printing;-) I'm interested in maybe doing some warhammer inspired jewelry.
@@RichardThompsonCA I'm behind you progress-wise. I have a small induction heater than can melt 500g brass or other metals but I have not made any useful casts yet. My first attempt to cast aluminium was just in a lost wax mould made of crudely refined forest clay and It went really well other than some minor mistakes. I will too need to get a burnout oven as I plan to try lost PLA casting in the near future.
@@Convolutedtubules Have you watched any of VOG's videos? He's got a lot of good info on home casting. His videos are what started my interest in casting.
This sounds good and I am wondering how good it will work for flie tying and hold up for fishing?

I usually scrape mine off, but high strength rubbing alcohol, ethanol or vinegar can do the job of helping to disolve it. You can also use heat (heat gun/hair dryer) Harder waxes like Carnauba will be harder to remove.
Hello enjoyed the video and would like some advice.ive an art deco.wax shop mannequin with glass eyes and really old sadly she's very fragile and indeed the top of her head is in large pieces and would like put it back together but not sure how ? As in wax or a glue of some sort? This method looks the best so far but not sure if it would hold , or stick old wax together thank-you for any help and advice paul
Unfortunately I can't help you with that. I've never even seen a wax shop mannequin and have no idea what kind of wax they would have used or how to repair it. I would recommend searching the internet for a professional. If it's not repaired correctly it will probably be ruined.

How flexy and how long does it enlarge before break? Sorry for my english. Im looking for a wax very gummy so that i can play it like clay and use it for lost wax jewelry. Thanks
I'm not sure a gummy wax is best for wax carving. You'll get a lot of fingerprints in it while working it since it will be soft. For lost wax they typically use a blue or green carving wax, available at Amazon and ebay. That stuff is less susceptible to melting from the heat of your hands.This sticky wax is about the same consistency as bees wax, but obviously stickier.
I play around with leftover wax a lot and silicone cupcake pans are perfect for this. You can even find them in individual cups. Don't even buy nice ones. Dollar Store silicone is just as good as overpriced Target silicone.

I'm not sure, I don't surf, I'm using it for crafting. I'd do a search for how to make surfboard wax.

I must be doing something wrong as I end up with a solid lump which isn't pliable at all. And it's stuck in my wax melter!
It should be about the same consistency as cold bees wax. I warm a bit up in my hand before use.
Is it suitable for diamond painting, or should I change the mix, for example 70/30?
I don't think they use this for diamond painting, I think those canvases come with an adhesive already on them. This is not a permanent bond, it's meant to be removable.
@@RichardThompsonCA With diamond painting you have to set the stones with a pen. Wax is put into the pen so that the stones adhere to it until you have placed them on the canvas....

@@littlewitch8954 If the beads are small I would think wax alone should be enough to pick them up.
I tried to make this but the wax and resin would not combine... totally stumped. Certain that the ingredients were pure, did 50/50 mix. Any suggestions?
Honestly, no. Did you tint it with a crayon? That's the only thing I can think of. If you did maybe the crayon had something weird in it. If you didn't, maybe the crayon is essential? I've only made the one batch and I'm still using it. How long did you heat it for? Maybe there was some kind of contaminant in the container you mixed it in? It's a very small list of ingredients, there's very few things to go wrong.
@@RichardThompsonCA Good questions but nope. However I spoke with someone else who said oil is essential to help combine these together, so perhaps that crayon actually did it, if it has another type of wax or oil in it. I also suspect that the resin I used was not pure enough, I crushed it and put through a sieve but still, had a sort of sandy paste consistency sitting within the wax... I'll try again with better resin.
@@benjaminmentat8272 Maybe the type of resin is different. I got this bag from amazon and the computer printed, abbreviated label on the bag literally says "Pine tree resin for Beeswa....tural grain rosin". I don't know what the missing bit was supposed to say, obviously something about beeswax.
@@RichardThompsonCA thanks, yeah I just bought some more resin, totally strained to the consistency of butter. And some new wax as well as tallow. we’ll see if that does it, I’ll give an update.
@@RichardThompsonCA quick update, worked perfectly once I used the refined resin and another beeswax, added a pinch of tallow. Hunch is that the resin I’d used previously just had too much detritus in it. Solved!
