Hey it's Rick, welcome to my channel. I'm an artist and former commercial illustrator. I make random videos about my hobbies, such as 3d printing (resin and FDM), sculpting, modeling, painting, airbrushing, calligraphy, animation cels, welding, machining and fabricating, electronics and crafts, laser engraving, screen printing shirts, molding and casting 3d printed parts. As always, follow these videos at your own peril. I'm just an illustrator, and while I have a lifetime of experience doing things with machines and electricity, I make no claims to be an expert in these or any other field. Painting your masonite laser projects with vinyl. No bleed, no warp, no mess.

Hello and welcome. In this video I'll show you how to use adhesive vinyl to color your laser cut masonite projects instead of painting them. The finish comes out great, it takes less time and makes less mess. The vinyl I use in this video is NOT laser safe and shouldn't be used without very good ventilation. I wasn't aware of that at the time. Laser-safe vinyls, however, do exist and should pro...

Hello and welcome. In this video I'll show you how to create a simple fixture to hold keychains for laser engraving/cutting. This is best cut from 1/4" masonite but you can use 1/8" if you glue two pieces together. Thank you, and with respect
Cheers for the video, mega useful! do you think this would be good enough for waterproofing up to a few meters in depth?
The gasket would be, but there's more to it than that. How the gasket fits, how well the parts fit together, what they are made of, the design of the parts, all of that will factor in. Most waterproof items with gaskets have the gasketed part held in place with screws, you couldn't just pop it on. Think of the back of a waterproof watch, the way it's screwed in place with a rubber gasket underneath it.
@@RichardThompsonCA wonderful! yeah it's just the gasket I needed to know about, planning on doing some small scale production with selective laser sintered vapor smoothed nylon held together with screws, just needed to know if the gasket would be up to the task theoretically. Many thanks for the video!
Love it, thanks!
Can i use it for candle
The beeswax part of it yes, but I'm not sure how the rosin component would burn, it might give off toxic fumes. It's not really meant for that.
Good afternoon I have a question which brand of black t-shirts I buy to print the design. Do you have a link?
I get mine from blankapparel.ca but I'm in canada. You probably want to get something from a local supplier. If you are printing discharge you will need %100 cotton shirts. I've used next level 3600, bella canva 3001, and gildan softstyle 64000.
a grease gun and a fixed mold casing such as a section of rectangular steel tubing schedule 40 a slice of steel spacing material and wedges to apply clamping pressure, a grease fitting on one orifice and a vacuum port with a manually operated check valve. Suck the air out and the media in as you apply pressure with the grease gun loaded with an old tube cleaned and re filled with 1 part or two guns filled with parts A & B of a 2 part media,
Can you expand on the acetate film and coating? Where can one get some?
The film positives (acetate) and the emulsion (coating) are both available from screen printing suppliers. I get mine here in Canada from a place called Green Galaxy in Toronto. Search the internet for "screen printing supplies near me" and you should find something. They are also available from Amazon, but might be more expensive than if sourced elsewhere.
@@RichardThompsonCA Thanks, I'll check it out. Convenient, as I'm in Toronto. :)
The infinity mirror look was amazing. As it was a top-down view, it just seemed to suit the overall look.
Thanks, I decided in the end to order some of the ultra-clear glass and do it over. It wasn't just the darkness that bothered me, the glass tinted the background colors really badly. It also would have been a paint to hide the wires up to the picture.
Incredible work. I wasn't even expecting a hand-painted background and it's the most amazing part of the vid.
hi, the vaccum machine u use is about 8 cfm ?
The pump I'm using is made by Robinaire. It's a 1/3 horsepower, 5 cfm, 2-stage pump.
Why dont you use a line screen table as the Asians do
I'd have to build one of those, I've never seen one for sale here in Canada, and that was just too much work.
are you going to do some R&S stuff soon?
Good timing! I've been going through Ren and Stimpy reference images looking for a favorite. No ETA though.
@@RichardThompsonCA oh, that’s great, did you have any favorites so far?
@@hotdogmanmayochup5599 I'm definitely leaning towards magic nose goblins.
Great job.
GRAND DAD!?
Can you tell me about the sides of the mold that come apart? Did you do this modification also? Thanks
If you mean the mold that's cut down the sides, yes I cut that after it was made. It's just done with an xacto knife. I made the cut wavy so the parts would interlock together.
Excelente idea, yo primero pego dos lados con Resistol atomotriz y quedan muy bien, lijando las superficies y eliminando cualquier filo que pueda rasgar la tela. Pondré en practica la idea. Gracias Bro.
Is this food safe? I need a particular part for a coffee mug, it'll be in contact with boiling water for quite a bit
This is the SDS sheet for the product: msdsdigital.com/system/files/ALUMILITE%20FLEX.pdf . It doesn't explicitly state one way or another. So I'm not sure. When I search for "is urethane elastomer food safe" I get this: "Polyurethane is resistant to mineral and vegetable oils, and aromatic hydrocarbons, making it a perfect choice for food grade applications."
These tutorials are gold. Thanks so much
This is not using a 3D machine to make the mould….! I am very dissapointed in your site for your baited thumbnail!
the thumbnail and title say they're mould cases though, which is accurate.
urethane vs silicone gasket?
If you mean "which one is better?", I guess it would depend on the mechanical needs of your part and how quickly you need to cast parts. I don't know what the hardest silicone is but urethane can be as hard as epoxy. Also, the urethane I have sets in 4 minutes, I've not seen a silicone product that was that quick (although I could be completely wrong, I've only limited experience casting).
Wow, incredible.
saludos tube buenos resultados con resina abs like, suerte
You sound like young Jordan Peterson!
Very cool diy upgrade!
Love your work ! Do you have a tip for getting two pieces of glass in same size? do you cut them yourself or order them bulk?
I get them cut to size for me, either from the local hardware store or a glass shop.
If you do create custom gaskets remember to make them available to your customers. Gaskets always wear out and are considered disposable. Add identification to the parts so people know which gasket they need.
Thank you
Very good results! I am curious why you choose to do the cel on glass instead of acetate?
Thanks, I don't like the wonky reflections you get from acetate.
Great job
1:20 ayoo rick knows how to whip the pot
You can make a Rocky and Bullwinkle animation cel, if you find the right one 😉
Great video. Your collection looks great. I’m a weirdo that uses dip pens. In the past I never got what I wanted from paint pens. Partially as I’m working on a smaller scale and need thinner lines. I’m going to have to try out those technical pens though. I skipped through at first, as I wanted to see your whole process, and was surprised you were painting over your inks but then realized you were using glass and it made sense. I use acetate and I ink the front and paint the back to keep things isolated. Can’t do that on glass though… well you could if you really like that parallax look.
I believe you are incorrect about the Inhibit X contents, SDS only has to show hazardous parts and can leave out trade secrets unless it's hazardous. It's considered a mold release and I believe the naphtha is just the carrier solvent that allows application to the surface. The naphtha likely almost all evaporates leaving the actual active compound behind. That being said some spray coatings (clear lacquers) work as spray inhibitors but some also contain sulfurs so it's hit or mis and I was reading a forum recently where they mentioned a name brand that was used by mold makers for years suddenly stopped working since they changed formulas (but you can't tell by reading labels or SDS).
Good point!
What is the background paper size and type of paper that you're using there?
The background is 16 x 20 inches and it's Masonite (high density fiberboard) that's been painted with a few coats of white gesso.
Great vid. Please consider using real music as opposed to the free stock music. It makes a huge difference to the quality and doesn't put musicians out of a job.
I would love to have a dip pen mold.
Or you can just use Tin cure like you’re supposed to 😂
Would’ve been nice if you mentioned in the video that you also need a vacuum/pressure chamber and not only “put it in the oven” And also would be very nice if commented on toxicity of urethane and the fact that you need to do it in a well ventilated area (not in your apartment) and probably wear some respiratory protection?
I know that you used glass to draw and paint Bugs and Taz on but if you used an acetate film (cel), what would be best to transfer drawings on to it: a nib or tech pen (with the appropriate ink)? I believe old time animation artists used a nib. I am trying to find a process that will maintain the integrity of the original drawing when transferring it to a cel. Do you know if photocopying was ever used in the process of animation or did they always have to be redrawn on the cel using the original pencil sketch? I have not seen anyone recommend using a copier.
I watched a video here on UA-cam (which I can't seem to find now) that showed behind the scenes of an animation studio (I think it was Disney or WB) decades ago, and they said something like "the linework is transferred onto the cel with a special process" but they never showed what that was. It may have been some sort of laser copier, or maybe more closely related to the tech they used to use back in the 80's to make blueprints from drawings. I have no idea. I don't believe they drew each one. You can't get the thick and thin liveliness in the linework like Disney has with either a dip pen or tech pen. I think it would have to have been transferred somehow. I think for your purposes a tech pen would work better. You're likely to get the ink sucked out onto the acetate from a dip pen. I would recommend experimenting first. Acetate ink is getting harder to find (at least for me). Once I run out of my old stock I think I'll only be able to get it from Amazon, and it's $40 for 3/4 of an ounce. Edit: check out this video ua-cam.com/video/il8bP4ZS4Vc/v-deo.htmlsi=lFpgunJDhTD92Zam I get the feeling the transfer process used proprietary technology that they didn't want to show.
Hey man really loved the idea but that cone holder tho i really need to get one do you still have them
Sorry, I stopped FDM printing those, the finish is poor and they take way too long to print. I'm working on a new cast resin version now, but I don't expect it to be ready any time soon.
This tutorial is just what I needed. I have to try it again like you as I did the very same but didn't work! It's for a wand replica that has a feather inside as core Fenix feather and I wanted to make this effect like if it were fire, but I think is too narrow to achieve it... I will be satisfied just If I could make colors fall vertically. But again, thanks for the tuto. Great work!
Glad it helped!
Me gustó y mucho. 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😊😊❤❤👍🏻
What did you use to get the black line details on the white medical cabinet?
That was done with a ruling pen.
Great video. Did you use the air brush to coat each section with the clear acrylic varnish to prevent peeling when using the film?
Honestly, I don't remember if I did that for this one. Sometimes it's necessary if the paint is peeling up.
@@RichardThompsonCA Thank you for the responses. Very helpful! When you have applied the clear acrylic varnish in the past, you did so with an air brush too?
@@tharrenpoplion6065 Spraying the work with mat varnish as an "isolation layer" is something I picked up from the youtube channel baumgartner restorations. It does seem to work to help with paint peel. I also add a Golden hard acrylic (GAC200) to the mat varnish to give it a harder film. If the acrylic is too "rubbery" the frisket sticks too well. You could probably do this with a paint brush but the brush stroke texture could cause problems. I didn't have this problem when I started airbrushing in the 90's but we seemed to have more options back then for airbrush surfaces and airbrush paints. It seems airbrushing has gone out of fashion. I used to work on a surface called Frisk CS-10 and it was amazing. Sadly that company went out of business years ago. Now I'm left with either poor quality options or prohibitively expensive options.
It all depends on how much time you have. If you have weeks just leave the resin print off-gas naturally (photoinitiators contain sulphur) and you will be fine. If you don't have that time, try to use a transparent resin as it allows the UV light to penetrate better AND leave it curing or 24h. This last one has worked well for us in the past.
Hello there. Can you tell me if it's legal to draw cars for POD, like, can you be sued for it? Any caution to be had from my end? Thank you. Lit design.
I have no idea. A lot of people do it and seem to get away with it but maybe they just haven't been caught yet. I think the more problematic part would be the logo's and trade marks of the company making them. I know I read that recently the current owner of the amc brand sued someone to keep the copyright even though nobody has made these cars in decades. I guess they still get a royalty on amc toy cars and wanted to protect that. I don't do any POD and don't sell many shirts so I don't worry about it. I know most popular defunct trademarked names have been scooped up by hedge funds and such hoping to cash in on infringements. You might check with a lawyer.
@@RichardThompsonCA sure thing,... but,.... what if you draw a vehicle with no logo, no model, nothing. The only recognizable thing about it would be essentially the lines and overall design. In this case we good, right?
@@danilfilimonov4579 I can't offer any legal advice on this, I just don't know. But with over 50 million channels on YT, there must be a copyright lawyer on here.
@@RichardThompsonCA 👍, sorry, thanks, take care
@@danilfilimonov4579 No problem, if you do find an answer post it here. I'm genuinely curious, I'm sure others are too.
For small pieces, you can simply xerox a model on cell and paint it from the back. Incredible art as always, this cell really match the original look. Bravo !
Great tip!
1:26 did you add a hole at the other end of the mold for the air to escape? Looks like you are fighting against the pressure created by compressing the air inside of the mold.
The vent hole is actually next to the injection port. I figured if I made the hole on the other side the silicone wouldn't go all the way around to fill the mold.
