Basic Syllabus may be almost same in private colleges and iit/nit.But the level of competency developed in iit or nit students and the exposure they get is quite different. And also in iit and nit ,from the same topics and concepts also difficult questions are made. For ex=A question paper is prepared in a private college on machine design by including suppose 6 to 7 topics in one semester.So,the iit question paper may also include concepts of same topics.But ,the problems that could come in iit question paper would be tough to unimaginable extent so much so that students may not complete the 3 hrs paper even in 5 hrs despite getting the complete freedom to discuss among each other and even referring the materials and all. Whereas in private colleges,easy paper would come mostly with some average questions and hardly 1or 2 difficult questions and the checking may also be bit lenient to favour students.
I think BITS is better than almost all NIT.But I think any NIT will be on a higher side in comparison to private universities like VIT and SRM as far as teaching standard and exposure are concerned. I think the creator can answer it better. Also you can check statistics of various private institutes and also of all the NIT to know more.
