Get good quality hand tools first. Start with a general builders/carpenters set. Get hammer, handsaw, speed square, tape measure, chalk line, pry bar, speed clamps. and tool belt. Then get 18v combi drill, impact driver and circular saw. Then get ground working tools, shovel, fork, pick, crowbar, wheelbarrow as you need to break ground. Then get plumbing and electrical basics. Quality pliers, adjustable spanner, screwdriver set, multimeter, etc, etc to fix things around the home. Buy concrete working tools when you need them. Trowel, floats, lump hammer, bolsters. Buy more 18v power tools as you need them. Recip saw, jigsaw, angle grinder, oscillating multi tool, etc.
Excellent video! I appreciate that you explained and showed the whys of these tools. I'm not on a homestead yet, but have been collecting tools, etc. that I'll need. I purchase nails, screws, hand tools at church sales and garage sales for cheap.
Every homesteader lives someplace before becoming a homesteader, even in apartments. They all should bring basic tools with them. I would do a few things different. Start off tools: - 2 x 10 piece screwdriver sets, straight and Philipps - 2 x locking wrench (you usually have nut & bolt) - socket set - hammer with nail puller - speed square or carpenters square - 3 x levels (1 ft, 4 ft, 8ft) - carpenter pencils - box cutter - nose pliers - wire cutting/stripping tool - clamp set - measuring tape Power tools: - corded drill - corded saw Advanced tool: - cordless tool set (go for higher battery voltage) -- drill -- impact driver -- reciprocating saw -- Flood/Work light - table saw Most tools to can be bought relatively cheap as sets around the holiday season.
After seeing your organization of your tools, this was the question in my mind. Good timing. Thought it was nice to see the first aide kit on the wall.
Great video. Love that you’re back filming. Missed you guys. Learn all ya can from your dad. My dad could build stuff in his mind and never used a plan or anything. He and my brother built a 8 stall 2 story barn for my uncle with no plan at all. Just what dad said to do is what they built. Dad never learned to read but he could do math in his head quicker than anybody. Could build most anything. Gotta love the old timers 😉👩🏻🌾
I have a Farm/Homestead and I’m also a contractor. I’ve used Dewalt power tools for over 15 years and they are still working great after all this time and work. Great Tools!
One of my top tools for me is a Black and Decker workmate. Portable work table that can clamp your work, can be carried to any job site.. Can be a small workbench. I have made a bigger table top that if needed I can clamp on top for bigger projects. Get one of the older ones with wood top. if you can find them. Have seen them on Craigslist a few times.
The DEWALT 15-Amp Corded 12 in. Double-Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw will cut so many things that you cannot cut with a 10" basic miter saw. As you do more things you will love the double miter option which you have but the sliding ability allows you to make cuts in a lot of wood you cannot without the sliding function. Also a Miter saw stand (about $100) makes any miter saw way more productive.
From someone who has a lot of tools my best advice to all of you is wait to buy power tools until around Christmas a lot of big box stores have great deals on tools! I have saved hundreds doing this! And on brand best bang for the buck is Rigid, it has a better warranty then Dewalt. This is coming from someone who has all Dewalt tools. My other advice is looking at Facebook marketplace great place to get hand tools and such! The other day I got a commercial freezer for free because the person thought it was broken but it really just needed a 30$ part fix, so for $30 I got a commercial freezer that I can hang deer in! That’s my advice for a lot of you! Also harbor freight has cheap hand tools if you are need them and don’t want to break the bank! Austin I agree with some of your tools maybe not in that order but I like where your going!
Battery operated very handy BUT I am going back to plug in tools (cheaper at present) as I am concerned about long periods of time without power. Batteries need to be recharged. I have found that it is quicker to start up the generator, do the job with plug-in tools and shut the gen down -- less time and fuel than running generator long enough to recharge all those batteries. Just something to think about--don't abandon all your plug-in tools for battery ones. I still use my Dad's 30+-year-old Craftsman plug-in drill!!
Only other quick tools would be a tape measure, plyers, and Philips/flathead screw driver. I seen to need one of these at least once a week. A 2ft or 4ft level could be on a homesteading top 5 list also lol... Plus if your on a tighter budget I would go with Ryobi power tools instead of pricey Dewalt. Drill/impact combo kit is $100 - $120 tops with 2 batteries and charger. Then I purchased the reciprocating saw tool only for $40 and saved a ton of money down the line. Only main difference I've come across is Ryobi is 18v vs Dewalt 20v, the average person won't tell the difference. Great channel guys miss being able to say I know where that is in Connecticut lol.. I'm located between Durham CT and the shoreline. If you ever need anything from CT let me know maybe I can visit, and be a farmhand for a day or so lol.
I'm a millwalke tool brand person around Christmas time power tools have big sales you can get $300 - $500 combo kit 5 or 6 some 10 pic kit power tools drill & impact & cercle saw & sawzall & grinder sometimes more
I would always go LED before halogen. Halogen lights get HOT and suck energy. I have LED plug in shop lights and love them. Cheaper than halogen as well.
The mustache has reached peak tying a woman up and leaving her on the railroad tracks villainy. You need top hat and tux with tails you dastardly dude.
#askhomesteady An alternative to ALL of these new buys, if you can find them, is search Facebook Marketplace. I got a Dewalt drill with 2 batteries for $40, a Black & Decker Circular Saw for $10, hammers, shovels, saws, axes, all for a fraction of the price you can get online for new. At least, that's a first choice, but I do know purchases through your Amazon link help out our favorite Homesteading UA-camr in a small way. So there's that.
I did get saw horses from the store, but they were stupid cheap at Lowes. Not Dewalt, but they're good enough for my needs, and I think they were on sale for like $25 for 2, so it was a great time to get them.
Awesome video. I also find it handy to choose the same kind of tool so they have the same battery. Why do we have to pre-drill holes? I have never done it but if I should be I'd like to know. Thanks. I bought my miter saw first. I love it so much. I use it for everything.
Went to investigate the adjustable saw horse. I will build my own set this summer. I need one taller than what the Amazon-linked one adjusted out to, especially for that price!! And it should be easy enough to make a second set at a traditional height when needed (using recycled pallets, which I can get easily for nothing around here).
I am ordering a couple of electric tools from your Amazon links this week -- great stuff!!! I love supporting folk already doing a lot of the things I hope to do down the road. And, yeah, will help me make my own saw horses.
Candice Christensen yep, from packages, to twine, to feed bags, to an apple, having a good, sharp knife on you is invaluable. A pocket flashlight and multi tool are a close 2nd and 3rd.
I enjoyed this video a LOT!!! What I would find extremely helpful would be a downloadable supply list for the project. Also helpful would be (brief) written instructions. It's kind of hard to work on a project while watching a video. In fact, supply lists and instructions would be something I would be willing to pay a little extra for. Thank you very much for your work!
I'm not sure how your channel dropped out of my routine of watching. I may have to delete & renew my subscription & notification bell because it appears UA-cam filtered you from my regulars. I am glad I'm back. I have a lot of back episodes to watch. Hope you all had a lovely Independence Day celebration on the 4th of July. Blessings abundant to you all always.
I really like the idea of adjustable horses. Didn't know they existed, thank you. The skillsaw and the Sawzill are also now on my to-buy list. (I will hold off on the chopsaw for now). I'm just into finishing my first year here, I'm getting going and need a few of these tools. (Ah but I do have chickens...) I do have several already, and things you have not mentioned. I like the way you are deciding to record videos for "Ask Homesteady" now … much more effective and helpful. Thanks!
Cordless Drill should be the first power tool you get. However I will say this you can buy a combo with the saw, drill, impact, skilsaw, a light cheaper than buying the two sets he mentioned together.
I like DeWalt too, I don't see myself building homes so I have no need for Milwaukee or Bosh (they are pricey but great quality). I started with Ryobi but I had a Ryobi circular saw lose its blade lock (broke off) so now it can only cut masonry...I was happy because I used that as an excuse to buy a new DeWalt, lol. Yea, on the drills, I got a hammer drill and a normal drill separately and wish I had a driver. All the people who do work in our building have drivers...I need one! Thanks for the tip on the package deal (driver and drill). You are absolutely right about getting both, I am sure everyone has an experience when they wish they had both if they don't. ...my problem is my wife sees power tools as "man toys" and not required articles like a purse or pair of shoes, lol.
Well, better, I guess is what I currently have. A miter box and a hand saw.... (Now that I'm out beginning to homestead, I'm putting this specific gadget on a future list...)
#askhomesteady what do you think is better for a homestead a 2wd truck or a 4wd truck or a 2wd suv or a 4wd suv and thanks for the info on the tool I'm looking into homesteading
I know you're super with your dogs, but you don't have livestock gaurdian dogs specifically. They are VERY different than a normal dog to work with. Would you find an expert on livestock gaurdian dogs and do a video on them? Maybe answer some questions about training, sperating enough for them to live with the livestock but not accidentally kill the animals, specific things to look for at different stages of life, introducing new animals to the homestead, problems with them hating cats no matter what you do. Can you tell we have a livestock gaurdian puppy?😉🤣😅 Come on Austin, can you help a homesteading girl out? #askhomesteady
Austin you handsome man, Im sorry but that mustache makes me want to call you Mario. I really enjoyed watching you and your dad with the kids building your work bench that will be a family heirloom. How about an update on the newest family member yet to arrive. Be strong Be Safe stay healthy
Great idea for the new Homesteady format, love it! Edit: suggestion for one more homesteading tool, for men with thick, unruly hair like Austin: clippers to shave your hair down! 😉 #askhomesteady
Omg you took my request!!!! This is so cool!!!! Thanks Austin! Love the channel.
Evie Tancredo congrats!
Angle grinder! It is honestly one of my most used power tools and I don't even have a homestead!

Randy Ranchero Dewalt does make great tools.
Great video! Personally I'd add Bolt cutters. Everyone should own a set of bolt cutters.

#askhomesteady Does K have a toolbox for the house? I sure do :) I am quite protective about it.
Wish I could like this more than once! Just excellent!1

Podcast is a great format for hour-long content. Good move!

Pawn shops are a great place to get tools at a steeply discounted price.
Great video! Awesome idea on the change up.

First tool is a good farm knife. Always keep it on you. Always keep it sharp.
That's a good one! I totally forgot about that! I use my knife in the barn almost every day

Is Luna pregnant? How is K feeling? Glad you are doing videos again! Love the stache!
Sledgehammer, Set of Screwdrivers, Pry bar. Good job Wario.
Ooh Wario... that is a true burn.... I’ll take Mario or Luigi all day... but wario... 😂

Thanks for the list. My husband appreciates backup on what he's been saying since we moved to the homestead... :D
The compound miter saw is well worth the extra!!! I would never go back to the basic miter saw again!
Well, better, I guess is what I currently have. A miter box and a hand saw.... (Now that I'm out beginning to homestead, I'm putting this specific gadget on a future list...)
hehe, reciprocating saw....I use mine over a chain saw at times.
# what about screwdriver
Aust why not just get the Dewalt 5 pack with circular saw, recip saw, impact, drill, and work light for 279 on amazon and splurg on 6A.H. or 9A.H.
Wow... I didn’t know that existed Patrick! Nice!
It's podcast time!!!🤸👏👏🥳

Be strong Be Safe stay healthy
Love the stash
#askhomesteady
Do you have any experience with beekeeping or know anyone who has kept bees on their homestead? Are they a good addition?
#Askhomesteady, awesome...so you will answer the falconry question by showing us how you captured your first raptor??
#askhomesteady who sings the "my old man" song used in the video with your dad ?
it was asked a few times in the comments but no answer
We also need a video that kind of features the new dog please 😉
um, your mustache is fantastic.
Hack saw, basic carpentry saw, or a bow saw
Pliers.
I'm loving the 'stache. I'm also rockin' the handlebars...
I like to have needlenose pliers on hand.
YES!!!
How did you forget zip ties?!! Maybe it doesn't count as a tool, but I pretty much just try to fix everything on the homestead with zip ties🤣😅
Great idea for the new Homesteady format, love it!
Edit: suggestion for one more homesteading tool, for men with thick, unruly hair like Austin: clippers to shave your hair down! 😉
#askhomesteady
Why?
??? So that he can quickly & easily trim it down to a manageable length, instead of having to cover it with a hat?
You don't show the drawers opening in both directions so as to utilize the full depth .
You can not cut a cycle with a circular saw
Hahaha 😅 did I say that🤣😅 shame on me, but I'm jazzed about more goat videos.
Hi
@
Evie Tancredo, MULTI SCREW DRIVER!!!
Do you have an email address? I have a few requests that need not be in comments. Thanks.
Check the About page, or the Homesteady website
Your mustache looks dorky
