true. i think it's one of the reasons why her take on Regina is so good. the new regina, appearance-wise, is presented in a way ull know that she's not a good person (plastic in the movie). but rachel's regina looks so sweet that as we follow cady's point of view, ull never suspect her to do something so bad
I remember hearing on E! Back in the day that originally it was Lindsey Logan who auditioned for Regina's character& vice versa... Rachel MccAdams "couldn't see herself" playing the part of Regina at ALL a first, hence why she was originally auditioning for Cady... Then she said since she ALWAYS plays the "good girl/protagonist" in her roles, it actually becane pretty fun for her to get to play the "villian" instead. ... now that this movie AND its characters & rolls are SOOOO iconic it is SOOOO weird and nearly impossible to think of these two in each other's places- but just think, that's ALMOST how it happened?!?! 😂😂😂
They cast the original VERY well. The new one was interesting in the fact they used younger but I didn't think it was cast nearly as well as it could have been

You can see in Rachel McAdams eyes how she’s waiting for Kady’s responses like a cat observing its prey. You can see in her eyes that she thinks before and as she speaks and is truly registering the info that she’s gathering all while reacting
And then the soft sweet tone of voice that she uses as she speaks. The leaning in to show interest and leaning back to show her thinking and dominance. And then the casual checkmate of the: so you agree you think you’re really pretty at the end with the subtle looking at her out of the side of her eyes

There's a lot of nuance that the new one misses out. Like in the original she comes off really judgemental about the fact that Cady hasn't been to a public school and also gives the backhanded compliment "BUT you're pretty." I just feel like there's a lot more to think about with the original because there's just more to talk about in how the lines are delivered and what's actually said.
Brilliant acting, allthough after watching some interviews with her it is a part of her personality. Even when she smiles and her words are kind there is something else lurking, which gives you an uneasy feeling
It’s because the camera stays on her, so you feel her gazing into your soul lol. The modern version cuts to her friend’s reaction and it just doesn’t have the same intimidation factor as the original editing.
I agree, way more natural and realistic. The original one can make you feel uncomfortable even if she is not talking to you and it's just a movie. The new one is just hateful.😂

The old version’s Regina George was asserting dominance in every way. Her gaze, the leaning in to examine the subject, the sly smile, the hybrid tone of her speech. She was successfully intimidating. As for Lohan’s Cady, she came off as perfectly naive and shy, falling into Regina’s trap from the get go. The power dynamics and verticality of this exchange was veery well executed, unlike the newer version where RG is not as sinister nor Cady is as naive or ingenuous.
And the costume design in the OG is so good! Regina's collared shirt and sweater combo was a popular look at the time, but it also has the added benefit of making her look like a boss interviewing a prospective employee for a job. It's a subtle visual cue to show us she's in charge and Cady's out of her depth. The weird plastic biker jacket in the new movie doesn't have that same visual cue....unless they were going for a "biker chick trying to recruit new gang members" vibe.
Maybe it has something to do with the years of difference, in the remake they consider Internet so there's a lot of information everywhere and maybe that's why Cady isn't so innocent and Regina isn't so mean. Still didn't like remake honestly
Yeah I heard that she turned down another major role (I think she was being scouted for Devil Wears Prada) because she said she wanted to focus on smaller roles/rest bc she had just finished filming Mean Girls and The Notebook.
the way the OG regina said "so you agree? you think you're really pretty?" was a great 'hint' on her personality that sets the tone, especially following up cady's response, she instantly switched to complimenting her bracelet. made her seems so "fake" in a more natural way, like a slithering snake. its so good!

Man this makes me appreciate Rachel Mcadams acting SO much more. She mastered the crazy eyes so well for this role. It’s the subtle hints in everything that just put it all together

It's the eyes chico, always the eyes. Rachel and Lindsay show so much emotion through their eyes. The surprise, the insecurity. You start to root for the characters or to hate them. And that's the art of an actor.
Completely agree! Along with the subtle changes in body positions and inflections in their voices. They bodied those roles and still 2 of my fav actresses 🫶🏽
I just watched the video 20 times, and you are absolutely correct. OG Regina has this subtle rudeness in her when she calls Cady(Cadey?) pretty, and when Cady agrees her "so you agree?" has this hint of sceptism in it. There's also the fake admiration of Cady's past that's really subtle. Whereas with the new Regina, it almost looks like a SNL-sketch by how Regina is making big eyes and tilting her head when she says "so you agree?" It looks clearly like she doesn't mean it

And despite it being filmed in the 2000s, it still holds up today in terms of humor, messages and morals. Even the acting is flawless. Meanwhile the "reboot" feels like a middle school play you're being forced to watch.

Why is nobody talking about Cady tho?? The original Cady was so natural and down to earth. Like you could actually picture her being an innocent homeschooled girl. The new Cady has a more confident and performance vibe to her. Like she was never homeschooled at all and she knows all the proper social cues. OG Cady really sold the fish out of water characterization without being unrealistic.

This comparison gave me the rare opportunity to notice the skill difference between different actors. Lindsay expresses a range of emotions through her nonverbal face gestures (looking side to side, drops and re-engages smile, shoulder shrugs). Lindsay give you the silent aspects of language that makes it feel natural. The new actress feels like one note in comparison (not that she did a bad job), never stops smiling or changes her facial expressions to match the line of questioning. She only modulates her voice which is good but not enough to feel entirely natural. Lindsay is talented - the whole cast was really.
Rachel's interpretation of Regina is so much more manipulative and sharp. She hides her meanness behind a pretty smile and that's why the lines feel so natural. Renee's Regina doesn't seem like she would say those things to the new girl. If anything, she sounds insincere and sarcastic. She's still a "queen bee" but her meanness is much more in your face.
To be fair the new one is a movie musical and Reneé Rapp played Regina on Broadway which is different to the movie but I see what you mean especially with Cady
I’ve never understood the idea of girls like new Regina being “queen bee”. It made sense for OG Regina because she is sweet to peoples faces and popularity only comes from being well liked.

“So you agree?” the way she changes the whole tone of the conversation in one second, her whole demeanor shifts right there and Cady from that moment on is on the palm of her hand. Like is so subtle and well done.
Yes! The way she leans back while she’s saying this. The first part of the conversations Regina (McAdams) is leaning forward showing interest. Then she leans back once she’s got her bait and now that naturally makes Cady need to lean more forward and be drawn to her. The body langauge from McAdams and it’s timing with her delivery is just unmatched. So good!! 👏🏼

I was like,,, no there's no way this is the professionally made movie that came out in cinema?? it's filmed like a Dhar Mann skit! and the acting,,, but honestly if the framing and editing were better that would've lifted the acting up a bit! The original gives me anxiety, Regina really sounds like a bully, trying to look nice but at the same time intimidating you. On the new version Regina looks like she is trying to be mean, but is a softie at heart.
This is when I realized what being a good actor is. I never really thought about the older cast as having good acting skills but looking at a lot of the modern actors... it really makes you realize that they do have skills.

Rachel McAdams is a superb actor, she's acting through her whole body, her whole face, her eyes, the tilt of her head. When she says "but you're like really pretty", and asks "so you agree?" and her expression instantly switches, it's so subtle yet your feelers go up and sense the 'danger'. It doesn't feel like she's just playing a character. It's just different. It's not that the later actress is bad!

Growing up, i had a passive-aggressive bully that was exactly like the original Regina, from the way of speaking, smiling, and other mannerisms. Watching that movie feels like such a flashback every time. Rachel truly nailed it.
"you think you're really pretty?" the difference between the two modes of delivery of the same line is so wonderful. in the original movie, RG is asking it in a sort enquiring way, like as if assessing her personality in the new version, RG is asking it in a sort of mocking way, as if she seems fo be assuming her personality its the little things that show what RG's character really is.

But I agree with the fact that the question seems more genuine, not really manipulative, making it less mean (just a little bit annoying instead). The og Regina does ask it with the intention of assessing Cady, because she looks surprised, but not because she's actually surprised, she's just manipulating Cady to make her feel more intimidated and confused with which would be the right answer to give her. She's like saying "oh, so you're a smug" without actually saying it.
Rachel’s « Why don’t I know you? » sounds so sweet and kind, even luring me into thinking that she’s actually not that bad of a person. She speaks in such a sweet and low voice, like a comforting friend to a person that’s completely clueless in a new environment. It’s amazing how Rachel managed to make Regina sound KIND but also has this unsettling feeling, she throws compliments and interests towards Cady, inviting her like a friend, but at the same time she said things like « I know what homeschool is I’m not r*t*rded » and the « so you agree » comment, making it as if it was Cady who said/did something bad/wrong, and making her feel guilty. It’s amazing acting, total manipulation. Really amazing.
Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams and the other actors of the movie were and are so iconic. They're absolutely stunningly beautiful, so talented, and PERFECTLY encapsulated the chatacters. They will never be topped.
I was actually really happy with a new adaptation! The old one has great acting but as a lesbian I was so bothered by the Janis plot that I couldn't enjoy the movie at all and I was sooo happy that they fixed that in the new one. So to each their own!

They want to change everything different but just because it's a musical does not mean they had to change everything. Like just make the characters sing not change the events.
The over acting is do to this being a musical unfortunately because live performances and stage action sometimes have to be over acted to get the point across
The difference is really most apparent in the "Why don't I know you?" line. Rachel's tone is so soft, and genuine, and disarming, perfect for getting a person's guard down. Renée's is a bit intimidating from the start, as if she expects to know everyone in the school.
Regina is sooo confident in everything she does - Rachel Mcadams perfectly shows us that true her body language and I was so confused to see Renee nervously rubbing her thumbs

You have to have full control over your body and voice. People don’t twiddle their thumbs in real life for no reason. It’s either a mistake on the actress’s part, or she thought it would fit the character somehow. Movie analysis can get intense.
@@Grapefruit000 some ppl really do just twiddle their thumbs for no reason. I bounce my leg for no reason. And anxiety wouldn’t always be a reason. Maybe the character or actress has adhd or is on the spectrum and does it out of habit. Every person has unconscious habits, things they do without reasoning other than “I just do it”. Having a character with a trait like that isn’t unrealistic or some heavily deep meaning.
rachel adams’s portrayal of regina will always be the best of the two. she played so well into the mean, stuck up, fake, and valley girl-esque parts of regina george’s personality in a way that reneé (as much as i adore her) either was not able to due to restrictions or did not want to due to wanting to put her own twist on regina. both ladies did a fantastic job and slayed their performances, but rachel’s will always be my favorite:)

Original is the original, and the new one is the reenactment you do for your high school drama club.
The new one didn't have the pretention to be a remake I think, it's mostly the adaptation of the musical that had a huge success in Broadway.

Lindsay expresses a range of emotions through her nonverbal face gestures (looking side to side, drops and re-engages smile, shoulder shrugs). Lindsay give you the silent aspects of language that makes it feel natural. The new actress feels like one note in comparison (not that she did a bad job), never stops smiling or changes her facial expressions to match the line of questioning. She only modulates her voice which is good but not enough to feel entirely natural. Lindsay is talented - the whole cast was really.
I rewatched the clip to see what you are saying, so that’s why Lindsay comes across so natural in her roles!

Then she leans back once she’s got her bait and now that naturally makes Cady need to lean more forward and be drawn to her. The body langauge from McAdams and it’s timing with her delivery is just unmatched. So good!! 👏🏼

The original gives me anxiety, Regina really sounds like a bully, trying to look nice but at the same time intimidating you. On the new version Regina looks like she is trying to be mean, but is a softie at heart.
This is when I realized what being a good actor is. I never really thought about the older cast as having good acting skills but looking at a lot of the modern actors... it really makes you realize that they do have skills.

Rachel’s « Why don’t I know you? » sounds so sweet and kind, even luring me into thinking that she’s actually not that bad of a person. She speaks in such a sweet and low voice, like a comforting friend to a person that’s completely clueless in a new environment.
It’s amazing how Rachel managed to make Regina sound KIND but also has this unsettling feeling, she throws compliments and interests towards Cady, inviting her like a friend, but at the same time she said things like « I know what homeschool is I’m not r*t*rded » and the « so you agree » comment, making it as if it was Cady who said/did something bad/wrong, and making her feel guilty. It’s amazing acting, total manipulation. Really amazing.

I was actually really happy with a new adaptation! The old one has great acting but as a lesbian I was so bothered by the Janis plot that I couldn't enjoy the movie at all and I was sooo happy that they fixed that in the new one. So to each their own!

The difference is really most apparent in the "Why don't I know you?" line. Rachel's tone is so soft, and genuine, and disarming, perfect for getting a person's guard down.
Renée's is a bit intimidating from the start, as if she expects to know everyone in the school.

Maybe she just wanted to rub her thumbs together? Do ppl seriously read this freaking heavily into things just for the sake of wanting to hate on it? The two movies don’t need to be compared nor were they meant to be. And not everyone who twiddles their thumbs or bounces their leg is anxious.
@@jamievandenbussche8406in acting classes, you are taught that everything you do matters. You are to remain in character at all times and have a motive behind every choice you make. You have to have full control over your body and voice. People don’t twiddle their thumbs in real life for no reason. It’s either a mistake on the actress’s part, or she thought it would fit the character somehow. Movie analysis can get intense.
@@Grapefruit000 some ppl really do just twiddle their thumbs for no reason. I bounce my leg for no reason. And anxiety wouldn’t always be a reason. Maybe the character or actress has adhd or is on the spectrum and does it out of habit. Every person has unconscious habits, things they do without reasoning other than “I just do it”. Having a character with a trait like that isn’t unrealistic or some heavily deep meaning.
rachel adams’s portrayal of regina will always be the best of the two. she played so well into the mean, stuck up, fake, and valley girl-esque parts of regina george’s personality in a way that reneé (as much as i adore her) either was not able to due to restrictions or did not want to due to wanting to put her own twist on regina.
both ladies did a fantastic job and slayed their performances, but rachel’s will always be my favorite:)
