Mate i really want to thank you for this. I don't know what's going thru T Helicon's marketing "head" but they don't have any grassroots training and the rest of the tuts are all about how to boil the egg, but they don't tell you where to find the water! Keep it up! Excellent!
Another great tutorial David. I have been gigging solo with a VL3X for the last couple of years, and its taken a while to work out all the stuff you have in this vid myself. But it’s nice to know I’m on the right track (no pun intended). Your vids got me started way better than the TC Electronics tutorials. Keep it up 😎
haha loved the pun! There's so much in the pedal that it really does take quite a bit of time to get to grips with it eh! Thanks for the feedback and comment too - much appreciated 😊
I love TC-Helicon and the VL3 is a monster - but their vloop system isn’t the most intuitive. But you’re lovely tips and tricks make it easier. Nice tutorial 👍🏻
Spent a few hours today button remapping and changing looper settings etc, you're videos are brilliant. I commented recently on your video for the new Boss Looper but I now feel (For me) the VL3X really has all I need so thanks again. I would love if the Octave part was polyphonic and had frequency adjustment but... Great work thank you sir. #ithastobedunne
6:00 Whaaaat!? We can erase the current recording without having to set stop erase all; by simply holding down the over dub. 🤯. Thanks Dave you’re a legend.
Awesome video Dave as always. Really love what you do and it so helps. Feel like I've learnt a whole new approach to my playing. You've been an inspiration! That is so cool to actually visualise how you apply the different options in looping. I'm still learning the craft of looping so for me that was super useful of taking it back to basics. I think one of the things is when things do go wrong you can quickly hold the erase button and keep recording or redubbing if you're doing overdubs without having to go through lots of menus. Been able to do that automatically when you perform live will make a huge difference. The other tool is the start stop button and you can keep on playing. So I guess if you do build your layers up on B and stop it you could just go back to A and keep playing or just go solo. If you do an overdub and it goes wrong so you redub, do you need to start from the beginning of the loop? You're a legend
Cheers Dave. If you have 'Queue Odub' settings to off, redub starts from when you hit the button, if 'Queue Odub' is 'on' then it'll wait until the start of the loop to redub. 👌
I adore you too david 😍. I got one of these BEASTS and sadly, have hardly used it!! It’s nice to see another more recent tutorial on using the looper. It would be fantastic if somebody could do a tutorial on using the serial mode as that is what I want to use most. I’ve managed to figure it out but it would be great to see how other people use it N what their settings are 😎
David Shanhun well... I’m into Prog rock so I tend to like songs with lots of different sections. But I know that will be difficult with just three sections lol. I get bored with standard looping however you are such a good performer that you make it seem interesting. You are one of my favourite guitarists😍
David: Thank you, very much for these informative and entertaining videos. If you have time, will you do a specific video on how to properly map the loop tracks to buttons on the Switch 6? I have a half-hour acoustic gig next month and I am learning my (new to me) VoiceLive 3 Extreme. I would really like to be able to set dedicated buttons on the Switch 6 (or the Extreme if you recommend it), so I can easily switch the tracks on and off while playing and singing. I'm just not sure if it would be better to use the loop button on the Extreme and use the Switch 6 for switching on bass guitar and other things I should map to it. I would appreciate any guidance you can give, since you obviously know how to use the VoiceLive 3 in a live setting. Thank you. Looking forward to more videos. I have been playing acoustic and electric since 1974 but your playing challenges and inspires me to keep striving for more. I am more in love with music now at 60 than I was at 24!!!
Awesome you are the best on youtube please do more of these type of videos , had the vl3 for over a year now and just cant get my head round it, but love it anyway. thank you once again for all your help.
Great tips. How did I not know that the layer button undoes an overdub? You’re bang on with needing to know all the button functions. I still need to look and that screen is awefuk to see in some situations. One question - I like to record both guitar and vocals. Any tips on not having the sound of the button presses getting into loops? Many thanks David.
Hey John, glad you picked up something new from this! As for not having the button sounds get picked up I don't have a lot for you - angle and distance of the mic away from the unit as much as possible to minimise it is probably about it!
I have my vl3x for a while and haven't taken the time to practice with it properly. This is a good way to do it. Thx. For your next vid. Can we have a simple song that we can practice together for chorus and verse switch. Something simple without any complex chords that will focus on getting over the technical stuff ❤️❤️❤️
Hi Guy, thanks! Are you meaning something in serial mode specifically, or perhaps using the swap between B and C for verse chorus? (just curious if you had something specific in mind). 😊
@@davidshanhun both. An "easy" method where the verse/chorus is played without looping. A more advanced where it's being recorded. And using a b section. And a more comples, but still easy, using a/b and stopping for the c section. Let's start practicing together with something simple first 😉
I don't use it! If you record with the metronome off in smart mode, then it doesn't affect anything at all, whereas if it is on and set to a tempo then loops will lock into that tempo. I actually just had another question about it which has made me curious 😝I remember finding it more frustrating than beneficial personally, but that also led me to ignoring it more than I should have haha!

Hi , I'recently viee some of your videos and they're great ! I see you've used duferent loopers ... I'm starting with loops and play with a multiefects (hotone ampero) that has s simple track looper. Now I wdnt more and I'm searching for new loopers ... I've been specs , reviews snd demos and I'm so confused. I was nearly convinced to adquire a ditto x4 but suddently I have the chsnce to get a voicelive 3 at a verygood price. By now I just want ti use it as a looper ... Wich is the best option ? I'm very hsppy with tge sound of my guitar (maintly acoustic) thriugh Amperi and I'm not gonna sing ... Just for some vocal loop ir chorus ... Csn you help me ?! It is worth to spent about 300 euros in a voicelive 3 just as guitar looper ? Thx a lot !!
Thanks David for all your great tutorials, I'm playing solo guitar and voice gigs but trying to add some backbeat. I have a trio band creator and looper and a voice live 3 extreme and want to add a beat buddy to the VL3X, just wondered what your thoughts are on syncing the two up......Also in the voice live 3 looper is it possible to access harmonies whilst looping... thanks so much for all your fantastic content, it's invaluable.....Walter.
Great introduction. If you use the VL3 in smart mode do you have to set the tempo on the box before you start or does it calculate tempo from first loop recorded?
Hey Nick, I record my loops with the metronome off - in which case you can change the tempo later but I don't believe it syncs (need to check this but remember thinking it was more hassle than benefit and also wasn't keen on their kick sound haha). If you record with the metronome on then it'll be locked in and not changeable, but equally that sorts out the timing from the start. I'll do a bit of a test later today... you've got me curious about it again!
Hey David. Actually you answered my question in your reply. I couldn’t get smart mode to work for me. My loops were all over the place. Stupidly I had muted the metronome rather than turning it off. Recording a loop in this way doesn’t “update” or sync with the box tempo. I have previously used a digitech trio plus and that box does calculate a tempo from your playing. It’s pretty much a different beast though. Thanks for your help. Look forward to your next video.
Thanks for the helpful video. Two weeks ago I had a kitchen water pipe rupture and the water went downstairs into my music studio over the majority of my sound equipment and our four acoustic guitars. Needless to say I'm overwhelmed with finding replacement gear. On that note, I'm looking at a Takamine P3DC as a replacement guitar and noticed yours is a Takamine. How do you like it, and I see the top is quite worn by your arm and the pick, and it looks quite weathered. Is that normal for that guitar manufacturer or a result of decades of playing it? Only reason I ask is my washburn was about 30 years old and had no such wear and weathering, and it causes me to be concerned about getting a Takamine guitar if they wear and weather so easily.
Hi, back again, one more question, do you think that TC Hellicon have done any improvements that you suggested regarding looper access from the main screen....thanks again. Walter.
Hi David. Thanks for this. After watching your lesson I thought that I would give it a go on my VoiceLive3 Extreme. I hadn't used the Looper function before but your lesson made it look so straight forward. One question that I have.... Is there any limit to the number of bars you can use in the loop?
Hi Peter, thanks for the comment - no real limit on the number of bars you can loop as far as I'm aware... at some stage you'd hit the unit's memory capacity, but it can store a massive amount of saved data so I'd be surprised if you hit it creating a loop even if it was super long haha!
Thank you David great content as always. I wonder if you have tried or anyone here tried connecting 2 guitars somehow to voicelive 3 and make it usable for 2 people to make music at the same time with one amp. I'm really curious about this. Please let me know if you have info :)
it's possible - perhaps using a mix5 or other small mixer for both guitars, and then sending them together as one input into the VL3. you would then both have the same tone and settings on the VL3 for both guitars however. If it's just an overall amp sim sound you're after that would work though.
thank you - without that erase tip I would have sold it right away and kept my TC Acoustic Play + Switch-3 (RECORD - PLAY - STOP).... I do exactly what you are describing: I record while playing and singing the song to have a verse or chorus ready for a bit of soloing at the end. waitaminute - it's not professional to hear the beginning of the loop playing before erasing when you hold the record button down!!
Thanks for this video. I love singing and harmony thru the vl3. However getting the loop timing just right isnt intuitive for me. So ive avoided it. I often get slight delay between start stop. Its like 1 out of 4 are right Maybe ill push thru my learning curve which is big part. Im just now starting to play with it again.
ah - just replied to your other comment. Curious on the VL3 - what is your loop setting - smart, serial, or quantize? ...I would suggest smart if it's not already on it! Let me know!
@@johnnycakeslim nice. Best suggestion if it's still bothering you with timing is to film yourself - can do it super simply just to watch yourself back - capture both your strumming arm and foot pedal all in one shot, and record a few loops and delete them and do it again, then watch it back later. The most common is too much concentration on the beat that you start and finish the loop, and as you relax and hit the foot switch on auto pilot after a bunch of practise it will become natural. Let me know if you do it and what you notice :)
heya! I would describe it as a 2.5 track looper haha! it's designed to have track A+B play together, and then to switch to track A+C and back and forth - for a verse chorus type scenario. So you can't have all 3 tracks play at once, but you can use that 3rd track to change things up a bit.
Thank you for this video! There is one thing I just don´t get right. When I´m deleting a layer in the looper by holding f.i Harmony for loop A, a short sound from the loop plays before it deletes. This is so annoying! So what I now do when I want to release a loop or layer is to get in to the Util etc to delete it "in silence". But that is such a long way... Do you know what might be the reason of that noise? From what I can tell from your and other tutorial videos the loop deletes "secretely" without any sounding... Would so much appreciate any input on this issue!
heya! sorry slow reply! Yes you are correct although there are ways to get around it to a certain extent. What I do is when I want to delete a layer or loop is I delete it as the loop is playing - you have to work out the timing to do it smoothly though as it does take a few seconds. So essentially you'd hold down the button a second or two before you want to remove it etc. Been a little while since I've been looping on the VL3 tbh now, so I'd need to dive back into things to get more specific, but a potential might be to use the buttonmap option or an external switch 3 or 6, but.... off the top of my head I'm not sure if undo/clear/delete etc is an option directly. Have a scroll through in buttonmapping and you may be able to suss something!
Hello, David! Thanks for your nice and clear tutorials! I use VL3 and looper for a few years, so I'm not a noobie in this, but now I ran into a new problem. Never used loop slots and haven't experiences. But now I want to make a premade loop for a gig, because it's to complex for live looping and I don't want to bore the audience. Moreover, I want to switch in this song from guitar to fiddle and won't have time and brain for backing. Anyway, I'm absolutely confused with loop slots and there is very little info about slots in manual. I watched a lot of vids, but no one discusses it in detail and I can't get answers from the forums because VL3 forums are dead practically. It would be great, if you make a detailed tutor about using slots. I have a simple goal now, just want to record a complex loop to B and C track, then save it for given preset. I tried this of course and it was successfull, say on slot 2 , but when I'm going to another preset, it starts with slot 2 also, which is included the recorded loop. Therefore if I want to use looper in this another preset, I have to delete this (but I want to save it for the future) or step back to slot 1. So long for live situation. Is there any way to have a premade loop just for one preset, while the others remain clean. I'm sure there is, but I'm confused. It's not really clear for me. Whereas, in general, this is a little-discussed problem , mean slots, the tutor about this would be pretty niche. Thanks in advance!
I figured it out from myself. However, could be nice a tutor about slots, but I see, your specialization is the live looping. Even so, I think, there is a lot of creativity with the slot working. Anyway, thanks for your great works.
aww glad you got it sussed and yep as you've figured out you can absolutely do it - didn't quite get to replying in time! Awesome that you play both guitar and fiddle! Have you checked out Graeme James? Awesome artist that's on both fiddle and guitar with a bunch of cool looping :)
@@davidshanhun Thanks for reply! Checked out Graeme. Just awesome! Looping academy. Multiinstrumentalist, singing, the way, how he's creating layers, complex harmonies with fiddle, oughhh.... Brain exploding multitask, if I imagine, how he does it. Thanks for the tip. will learn a lot from this. And of course, I continue to follow you. I understand, why this slot thread is so orphaned, as the real looping art is not about "karaoke", but sometimes slots can be useful. The hardest goal is not to be captive of our own loops and keep control in our hands, foot, brain, skills all the time and of course not to bore our audience. And you give great advices for this also! Really apreciated! ( Your John Mayer vid is greatest) Cheers!

Hello David. I use vl3 extreme in my live performs like pubs, bars etc. places... I'll make a live perform on instagram. My adaptors are allready ready for this perform. But how i can make louder -especially- my mic and guitar perfectly for the listeners?
Hi! I would use the headphone output from the VL3 to go into your phone - that way you have a volume control using one of the 4 mini knobs to set the level. A great way to check level for this, is to set it up and record a normal video on your phone then play it back to check levels.
@@davidshanhun Are you sure that there is a cable from headphone output (mini jack) to my iPhone input (maybe usb lightening adapter) ? What is the cable, could you tell me if you know about it?

Hey David. Would you be able To explain how to combine VL3 with a external looper pedal? I have the old jam man stereo Looper. Vocals/ guitar if possible
sure thing. You'd simply need to go out of the VL3 and then into the jam man. Same outputs that you normally have from the Vl3 go directly into the jam man, and then out from that into your desk or speakers. Hope that helps!
I have a question.. can I put external guitar pedals before the VL3? I don't want to try it without knowing if it's ok, in case it would damage the VL3.. Thanks!
Yep you certainly can 👌 you may just want to check the guitar gain setting on the vl3 once you set them up (as they may change the amount of signal going in to the vl3). Otherwise, aim to have them be at a similar volume when switched on etc. ☺️
Sorry if you've covered this but can I make my voice and guitar come out of the output but only have the guitar go into the loop at the same time? I'm thinking of playing (live) the 1st verse with vocals while recording the guitar chords then playing the guitar loop while I sing the 2nd verse and add other guitar work. I'm guessing it's possible. Hope that makes sense.
hey Warren! Yes - you can totally do this and that's what I do - it's super handy. There's a few ways to do it... If you only ever record just guitar for your loops - go into the looping screen, hit utilities, input, then choose guitar - then go back and save it on your way out - that will mean it only captures your guitar and never vocals or the Aux in and will probably be what you want. It's a good default setting to have I found. However, if you need to switch during performances (while you're actually looping) you can map the step button or an external footswitch to be 'loop input cycle' - that way you can switch between what goes into the loop while you're actually looping. I cover it in point #3 in this video if you want a walkthrough - ua-cam.com/video/vuL4Oal_3SU/v-deo.html. Hope that helps!

@davidshanhun** I’m looking to control my singing effects, looping, and harmonisation during rehearsals. @@SimplicityForGood then yeah a lot of options - possibly the rc505 mkii would be the go if vocals is your main and you want to be looping a lot. The voicelive 3 is still a great option in the mix, better vocal options/fx although more limited on the looping side. Essentially I would figure out what you need in terms of looping first and see how evolved that part of things needs to be, and then you can look at whether you get something all in one unit, or you look at the looper and fx units as separate purchases to be more specific about what you want/need etc. Hope that helps!

Mate i really want to thank you for this. I don't know what's going thru T Helicon's marketing "head" but they don't have any grassroots training and the rest of the tuts are all about how to boil the egg, but they don't tell you where to find the water! Keep it up! Excellent!
I was so frustrated with this looper I left it for more years. Thanks for relighting the interest mate!
ah awesome John! Hope you're having fun with it now!
Thanks for taking us through the importance of knowing your way around the Technology. Very appreciated
great David, can we have more of these easy to use videos please, you are making my life so much easier with the VL3 .
Thanks Ricky! Glad it was useful/appreciated :) anything specific you are hoping to learn or understand better right at the moment?
I love TC-Helicon and the VL3 is a monster - but their vloop system isn’t the most intuitive. But you’re lovely tips and tricks make it easier.

Just what I’ve been needing, thanks Mate! Keep em coming!

🤯. Thanks Dave you’re a legend.
hey Sam! Yeah... I remember realising this reasonably early on. Game changer!
Thanks for this video. I’m new to looping and was getting frustrated. This really helps.
Most welcome - glad to hear it helps you!
Excellent instruction video. And nice work on those bends. They can be a challenge on an acoustic. Just subscribed for more.
Cheers Joe! Just getting back into creating content which feels good! Hope you enjoy them when they come out!
Just done my own little Stand by me Ben E king.. using RC30 sounded great best one ive ever done.. timing is key..
Nice work! Such a great tune 😊
I adore you too david 😍. I got one of these BEASTS and sadly, have hardly used it!! It’s nice to see another more recent tutorial on using the looper. It would be fantastic if somebody could do a tutorial on using the serial mode as that is what I want to use most. I’ve managed to figure it out but it would be great to see how other people use it N what their settings are 😎
😉 True - serial mode is pretty handy, although I don't really use it much myself hehe! What sort of music/tunes are you looping?
David Shanhun well... I’m into Prog rock so I tend to like songs with lots of different sections. But I know that will be difficult with just three sections lol. I get bored with standard looping however you are such a good performer that you make it seem interesting. You are one of my favourite guitarists😍
@@tronlady1 prog rock looping could be very interesting haha! awww thankyou! 😍
David:
Thank you, very much for these informative and entertaining videos.
I am more in love with music now at 60
than I was at 24!!!
Thanks Don - replied to the other comment on 'looping from the main screen' with info!
Awesome you are the best on youtube please do more of these type of videos , had the vl3 for over a year now and just cant get my head round it, but love it anyway. thank you once again for all your help.
thankyou! 😊 yeah there's sooo much in the pedal, it's nice to take each little section bit by bit to get familiar with it!
Such a good starter video - especially with the Voicelive 3. Really helped - thanks!
Love how I can go back to these, still learning man 👍
That's cool that you still get stuff from it! 😊
Great video, David. I have the VL3 X and am HOPING you can tell me how I check available MEMORY... Thanks
Great job all through the process and editing . Blessings
thanks
I have my vl3x for a while and haven't taken the time to practice with it properly. This is a good way to do it. Thx.
For your next vid.
Can we have a simple song that we can practice together for chorus and verse switch.
Something simple without any complex chords that will focus on getting over the technical stuff
❤️❤️❤️
Hi Guy, thanks! Are you meaning something in serial mode specifically, or perhaps using the swap between B and C for verse chorus? (just curious if you had something specific in mind). 😊
@@davidshanhun both.
An "easy" method where the verse/chorus is played without looping.
A more advanced where it's being recorded.
And using a b section.
And a more comples, but still easy, using a/b and stopping for the c section.
Let's start practicing together with something simple first 😉
Very cool Tips, Thanks. I love Ur VL Tech vids. U never talked about the MET. Do u use it? In smart or quantised Mode its needed isnt it?
I don't use it! If you record with the metronome off in smart mode, then it doesn't affect anything at all, whereas if it is on and set to a tempo then loops will lock into that tempo. I actually just had another question about it which has made me curious 😝I remember finding it more frustrating than beneficial personally, but that also led me to ignoring it more than I should have haha!

Hey Gary - thank you :) Billie Jean is an epic, have seen some interesting loops of it floating around, may take a look at it at some stage myself too. Thanks for the suggestion!
Thx a lot !!
ah sorry I missed this til now - just replied to your other comment regarding this!
@@nickevans3613 love that you got it sorted!
This is so interesting for me but unfortunately it will be 11 pm where I live. I'll catch up in the next days! ❤

Thank you for that great tutorial on VL3
Most welcome :)
Walter.
Thank you! This was SO helpful.
awesome! 😊
Nice moves! Do you think we can apply all this to the« VL3 extreme», because this VL3 is no more available in the market in France?
Best.☺💙
Hi Dovane, yes it's the same!

@@davidshanhun yes its smart i assume by default. Ive not adjusted it
@@johnnycakeslim nice.

Thanks so much!! Great video!!

Explained great! Thx
haha awesome!
Hi again,
Voicelice 3 specs says it's a 3 tracks looper ... How can I use the 3d track ?
Thx
( Your John Mayer vid is greatest)
Cheers!

To explain how to combine VL3 with a external looper pedal? I have the old jam man stereo
Looper. Vocals/ guitar if possible
sure thing. You'd simply need to go out of the VL3 and then into the jam man. Same outputs that you normally have from the Vl3 go directly into the jam man, and then out from that into your desk or speakers. Hope that helps!
@@davidshanhun killer. I usually run headphones / record to my phone via aux
Nice job
Thanks!

I’m looking to control my singing effects, looping, and harmonisation during rehearsals. I want to be able to loop my voice and sing along with myself, just like in some of the videos you see on UA-cam where one artist makes all sounds, both instruments and different voices and connects, looping them all together to one performance.
When I perform live, I’d love to add backing tracks too, sometimes..
Mostly I’m interested in experimenting with creating full musical pieces entirely with my voice and taking that live on stage.

@@davidshanhun alright i give that a try thank you very much :-)
Danke!
Thank you Gernot G 🥰
Today I'm really sorry that the translator doesn't do much. I only have a rough idea of what was said. But still - a very sympathetic explanation. I have Voicelive Extreme and it has three different modes for the looper - I still haven't understood them.
'smart' is the most commonly used mode for the looper. I hope you're enjoying your Voicelive Extreme!
@@davidshanhun It offers great options for voice. All the guitar modulations are also rich. But distortions are useless.
@@radek1cihak sounds like you're getting familiar with it then which is great 👍

@@leroygrainger5705 oh sorry to hear that - it took me quite a while to get used to using it and it does take a lot of time at the start to learn.
Sorry! Made a mistake with your name. I called you Sam. It's Dave.
that's ok Leroy!
Just starting, my looping is not good smh🙄
hehe takes a bit getting started! Such a fun world to play with now you're getting into it though 👌
@@davidshanhun thanks for the words of encouragement..
