Incredible presentation. San Antonio, Texan .. now living in Dallas. I cannot believe the intricacies of Texas history discussed here, that I thoroughly enjoyed learning. I am a very interested Texas history enthusiast, that just discovered there is far more to learn, than what I know. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR UPLOADING THIS INFORMATION. Awesome stuff !!
Great information. But still this sea pf mud is still not convincing enough. Imagine. You have almost 3k soldiers IN TEXAS!!!! Enough to crush the “pirates” why retreat???? I still think there is so much more we dont know.
Dimmick is only using the words of Filisola, who made up scores of excuses why he left Texas to the enemy, when he did not have to. Using the official papers of Col. de la Pena, Gen. Urrea, Filisola is found to have lied again and again about the road, supplies, the morale of the army etc. And the so-called Sea of Mud did NOT break the morale of the Mexican army, it was Filisola's actions, following the orders of a captured general, Santa Anna, to retreat back to Matamoros. Texas was NOT won by Texan bullets, but by Filisola ordering the army to retreat across the Rio Grande (Rio Bravo), when it had enough supplies to keep the war going on. Don't believe that Sea of Mud story, it's just a legend, and another Texan lie, posing as the truth folks.
Both general agreed to head to Victoria to regroup after hearing reports of the battle of San Jacinto. While on the way there the received word from Santa Anna to retreat to Victoria (which they were already doing) and wait for further instructions. The Texans kept Santa Anna alive in hopes to discourage the continuation of the war. Santa Anna’s handpicked replacement as president had died while afew months back and his replacement didn’t have any loyalty to Santa Anna. The Mexican army still two armies in Texas along with nearly 1K cavalry in San Antonio. It’s important to note that if the cavalry was in good shape that it would have been actively engaged in the war instead of trying to get back into form. The two army abandoned SO MANY supplies in the sea of mud (LOOK at all the items that have been recovered up till today) according to the records and what the archeology shows that were in NO SHAPE to fight. So while the Mexican Army still had a large statistical advantage in manpower the troops they had were just barely hanging on! This is the reason why the army defied the order to stop the retreat. The general said stopping the army would lead to a mutiny. Fate wasn’t kind to the Mexican army never giving it a chance to catch its breath, regroup, and continue the war. They were send to fight the invading French, other breakaway states trying to copy Texas, and having to fight internal divisions (general vs general). It took 6 years to return and in 1842 the Mexican army had two campaigns into Texas (San Antonio was captured). By then it was way too late to recapture Texas and now Mexico was willing to recognize its independence if it didn’t join the US. So yes the Sea of Mud sealed the deal for the Mexican Army and it’s what secured the war after the victory of the battle of San Jacinto
