How to Clean Play Sand for Aquarium

- In this video, I will be talking about the process I use to clean a play sand that I will be using in my new setup. I chose quickrete play sand. Because of he natural coloration it has and the price which is only around $5.00 on your local home improvement stores. You will need a bucket, a high pressured hose and a small container for this.

Excellent washing and cleaning system, I too have this sand in my aquariums. The work takes some time and water but the final result is excellent. It has a low cost and is great.
I agree, low cost, looks natural and very safe for fish.
@@fishoutwithjuno yes my friend you are right!
Thank you! My 27 yr old aquatic turtle will be sooo happy with her new sandy bottom...🐢
I'm glad to be of help. :)
This is a super helpful video!
Thank you my friend. I'd make sure to check your channel out as well.
Thank you so much very excellent and informative video
You're welcome. :)
Very helpful thank you so much
You're very welcome. :)
I just subbed! Plays and is a great substrate
Thanks for liking the video Langen. :)
Thx!
Thank you. :)
The fact that I can use a $12 40 lbs play sand instead of a $23 12 lbs aquatic sand is insane
Just make sure you clean it well and also make sure that's the grit you want. 😉 have fun. :)
@@fishoutwithjuno can you add the sand while there's fish in the aquarium?
@Awakened Anarchism if it's washed very carefully, then I don't see why not. But I think it's safer if you add it before. The sand can have guns that may be hard to remove but as long as you wash it properly I don't really see why not. I mean very throughly washed.
@@fishoutwithjuno thanks for the feedback

Nice video we actually just did this for a project we have coming up 😀😀👍👍
Thank you for checking out my channel. What's the new project coming? Or is it still a secret?
@@fishoutwithjuno you’ll see we are always working on something around here hahaha
@@jackanddan do you own a fish store?
@@fishoutwithjuno we do not but we have a lot of tanks and are always working on more

i bought this play sand and after reading the ingredients i found that it contains silica which is a know carcinogen if inhaled, upon further seach i found out that the warning of carcinogen silica is only intended for those factory workers but why would a warning be included in material sold commercially when its intended for factory worker
Does this work with smooth play sand? Because i did the thing with a powerful hose for 30 but the water still looks dirty and 75% of the sand is gone
I think so. But I believe the finer the sand is the harder it is to clear up. Just because we mistake those fine sand with debris and stuff.
This is what's happening to me, which lead me to do more research. there's a point where the sand is small like dust i guess? lol mine says its washed already but the first to washes were a lot cloudier. I'll stop at 1 or 2 washes. also has tiny broken sticks in it, which i guess is fine. I'm going to do some water testing with my sand and check to make sure. Nice video! I think aquariums have long been DIY but its being so commercialized people are losing those roots
If it’s fine sand, you need to use a pillowcase. You put sand in the pillow case and put the pillow case in the bucket. Make sure the water doesn’t come in from the top. Think of the pillow as a filtration device. Have the water go in the bucket but not directly in the pillowcase with the sand
What if I didn’t clean the sand & added straight to my tank???
@jasongomez8835 it might get cloudy. Also some particles may damage the filter if you have one running
Is that one bag (50 pounds) of sand in the bucket? Informative video. Thanks!
Thank you. I only put a little in the bucket at a time. Easier to clean.
@@fishoutwithjuno Thank you. 👍

Is this axolotl safe?
Good question. I never had any experience with them so I honestly dont know the answer to that. I dont know their behavior so I am not sure if they will eat this accidentally. I wish I could help more.
Yes! It is axolotl safe! But no babies. They have to be full grown adult sizes. And you have to feed them above the sand. Like higher up in the tank. :)
I don't know what your place is or what is your water availability, watching this in peak summer from drought prone area is making me sad because of no water Availability in my place
I understand. And that is a valid thing. I am sorry if this made you sad. That was not my intention.
