I'm using white silica sand in my tank (first time using it), and it only took me maybe 20-30 mins to clean what I wanted and add it to my tank. And it never clouded my water like other sand seems to do
The other day ago I was asking the same question and you could. You'll have to boil the sand multiple times to get rid of parasites. Today I bought a 50 pound bag of play sand for less than 4 dollars at home depot. If I was you I'd just pay for it, It's easier.
I bought nat geos white aquarium sand and it's a lot less work than buying play sand. Hardly had to rinse it. basically same process to be safe but a lot quicker. Time is money.
i thought i could do this at night. so i just emptied my aquarium, gravel and all. got fish in little bowls, guess they will have to survive til tomorrow morning
A WAAAAAY BETTER WAY: buy Quickrete Sand (Homedepot sells them for 2-3 bucks for 50 pounds and can be used for atleast 30-40 gallon aquarium), buy a mesh strainer, pour the quickrete sand, blast it off with a water (with the "jet" or "shower" setting). It will remove the fine sand and the dusts off the sand.
Well "Aquarium" brand sand is still sand right?? So play sand is just raw form of dyed "aquarium sand".. And "aquarium sand" Also must be rinsed before adding to a tank!! And dosnt look like muddy crap.. And for food depends on your definition of cheap.. I make my fish food so its pretty cheap price wise.. But better nutritional wise than any "Branded" food you can buy in the store!! But sounds like you have been misinformed by people on forums to buy only "aquarium" branded junk.. IMO!!
That is because there was lots of crud and dust mixed in with it to begin with. I find it astonishing since something called 'play sand' should by rights be OK for kids to play in. I'm really not into pampering the darn brats ;-) but there is no way all that dust is not a health hazard.
used playsand in my tank. worst decision i even made. lost five african cichlids over it. it never clears and wen disturbed looks like shit. stupid me for tryin this
your sand looks nasty and the color looks like cement. my sand came from lowes its white with tiny gravels of rocks inside which is not noticible. ill be cleaning it today. mines look like beach sand.
I live in CA can I use sand off the beach if I clean it real well??
I followed the method in How to clean new aquariumsand the easy way and it was VERY quick and easy

I hate when companies advertise sand to be prewashed but when I washed it out there was so much dirt in the sand
But I cant complain I got it for 2.50$ instead of overpriced pet store sand
They probably mean clean for the designated use
You would have to clean it very very well!! But I have some ocean sand in my cichlid tank and no problems..
Is it any different then this I wouldnt think it got any easier than a garden hose and a bucket LOL!!

Can i use this method for all purpose sand
you can use it for any substrate
Ya beach sand for freshwater may be harmful but not what this video is about... saltwater parasites will die in freshwater anyway..

Do you mean quickrete playsand? They have different kinds including fine gravel, so which one do you recommend?

Woooo !🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 Bad idea man use grabble
Hahahahaha grabble.... you can use sand, dirt, peat moss, etc etc for substrate. Stop running your mouth with things you know nothing about.
