i enjoy how you bring up the experience of reading rather than just if people will “like” the book. with reading goals and people trying to just consume stuff it feels like the actual content and journey isn’t paid as much attention sometimes (this goes for myself too!)
"A billionaire.. a very rich man" Thank you, MCT, for finally explaining that word for me. On a serious note, really great to hear you discussing books again! Please don't stop!
Grim dark space opera!? 😮 I'm really interested in starting The Gap Cycle after hearing you talk about it. Stephen R. Donaldson is an author I've been meaning to read for a while, and I found Lord Foul's Bane at a used bookshop recently so I plan on starting that soon. Great video dude! I always like you recommendations since you read some stuff I've never heard of!
Have not read Gap but Foul is a tough read until he gets to the Land, and if you can get past the opening events there, the rest are very good. Sounds like Gapnhas some of the same issues. Read the Mirror series and interesting not on the same level.
From one Man to another. Ive read more comics than books in 2021. Though my favourite reads have definitely been From Hell by Alan Moore, quite gruesome and twisted and The Parable of the Talents. A really interesting insight into religion and it being a tool for good and evil.
Last year I’ve finally got into Stormlight Archive and nothing will top that for me. That series completely stole my heart. They are not perfect by any means, I have the biggest amount of criticism towards Oathbringer and Rythm of War but it mostly is regarding pacing and side plots. However, the emotional impact these books made on me, I can’t compare it to anything else. I haven’t been so in love with the series, for years! Since I read LOTR for a first time 16 years ago and my live was never the same. I thought that feeling was gone forever, that feeling which tells you that you are reading one of the most important books of your life, but I found it again in Stormlight Archive. Way of Kings, my number one book in last year, easily. #Bridge4 Kaladin is my soulmate and the ending! Damn…the ending. Completely took me of guard, I did not see it coming. Now I’ve started reading Wheel of Time but I’m planning to read Mistborn later. If Mistborn is as good as Stormlight Archive I think Barndon will dethrone Stephen King from my favorite author spot 😊
Honestly Mistborn is mostly great because you get to see Sanderson’s epic conclusion to an arc of books. I actually prefer era 2, the wax and wayne books, but since they’re not done yet and won’t be until November of this year I can’t testify to the same “completeness” of the arc that the era 1 mistborn had. Sooo satisfying.
Yes! The Stormlight Archive reinvigorated my love of Fantasy! Way of Kings and Words of Radiance are def my favorite two but yea there is so much great stuff in all 4. Spoilers for folks who have not finished book 2: How amazing was it when Adolin ended Sadeas!? I still say it was not one of Adolin's smartest moments but definitely one of the most satisfying haha
I read the first two Malazan books last year and holy shit, what works of art they are. It's definitely something to consider reading after you finish your Wheel of Time journey.
rhythm of war is my favorite in stormlight so far. i love the series for its insane plots and action sequences, but ROW had several moments that were genuinely touching. also navani's character arc!!! can't wait to hear your thoughts on it when you get around to it
Ahh!! That definitely makes me want to read it. I finished Oathbringer this past fall but I like having a break between stormlight books so I'm reading a couple of the wheel of time books but I have RoW just sitting on my shelf calling to me.
I haven’t looked into it at all and trying to avoid spoilers in case I decide to pick it up but is there another entry after ROW? Im probably going to get round to it at some point regardless, though for me each entry has lessened my interest for the next unfortunately despite Sandersons improvement in prose. Just certain plot points I haven’t been a massive fan of since Way of Kings which is one of my favourite fantasy books of all time. Would you at all say RoW is much different to Oathbringer (which I unfortunately don’t have much love for)?
@@protector_of_the_realms oathbringer is also my least favorite in the series, and row my favorite, so it definitely turned around for me. to be honest (and maybe this is telling) i remember incredibly little about oathbringer's plot, but rhythm of war definitely has a distinct focus to it--something happens fairly early on that several of the pov characters spend the whole book trying to overcome. kaladin and navani in particular have (imo) excellent arcs in the book, and elements of the magic system get developed in very interesting ways. row was the first book where I felt like I was appreciating/understanding the true scope of what is going in stormlight. though several new questions are posed, there also start to be some answers (and they are WILD). the next entry is coming out late 2023/early 2024 i think and i'm definitely excited for it.
Hearing you talk more about Butcher's Crossing is such a treat, as I loved hearing you talk about it before! I must have watched your other video on it like 5 or 6 times just because it was so nice hearing someone talk so passionately about the book, haha. Great video, always look forward to book videos like this, keep it up!!
I picked up Ragtime because of you & I'm loving it. E.L. Doctorow is a tremendous writer. I'd been on kind of a reading drought for a long while (goddamn phone sapping my attention span) so this was a victory on many levels. Thanks man.
Rhythm of War is a big improvement on Oathbringer in my view. The ending made me cry -- first time I have cried at a book since I was quite young. It may be the best Stormlight book yet. I look forward to hearing your thoughts when you get round to it!
I highly recommend A Night of Blacker Darkness by Dan Wells. It is my favorite book I’ve read of 2021 and maybe favorite book. It is hilarious and bizarre. It’s very light
I love just watching you talk about books! You always mention tons of books that I haven't heard of or that just weren't on my radar, so I really appreciate it.
I actually read 40 Lashes Less One last week after you mentioned it in a video much earlier last year. I had been looking for it for awhile but the half price books I go to only got one in late December. I liked it and also bought his westerns short story collection.
The last time you did a video like this, I wasn’t really interested in any of the books, so imagine my surprise, when this video ended with me having 4 new books on my TBR! I don’t know if you’ve gotten better at making crappy books sound good, or if this really is a good selection. I’ll know once I find the time to actually read them all.
Love the BookTube side of your videos, and glad to see more of it! I remember being assigned Manchette's "Fatale" to read in a great wild crime fiction class, my last semester of college ... another slim volume, very weird, with quite the body count in that novella length banger as well. Glad to see you also like John Williams as a writer, I want to re-read "Stoner" (a gorgeous novel) after I read "Augustus". I'll have to get to Butcher's Crossing and Nothing but the Night after that. Keep it up!
@@ManCarryingThing And to your point with Stephen R. Donaldson ... my only context is the the first Thomas Convenant book, Lord Foul's Bane, which was interesting as a quest narrative told in some seriously top-shelf word choice, but also a drag in parts, and with big content warning for those first 100 pages. still hope to continue with the chronicles of thomas covenant though ... might try The Gap Cycle in between! and Malazan, too, awaits ... too much to read!

I read the Gap Cycle 20 years ago and nothing has lived up to it since. Recently listened to the audiobooks and I still don’t understand how it isn’t more known. It’s also perfectly suited to an epic 4 year HBO series. I can’t recommend it enough to people. Pumped to see you give it a shout out!

My favourite read of the last months was defs Digital marketing fundementals book 1. I really enjoyed the way it sucks out your soul and makes you wish for the sweet release of death. The exams that are paired with reading this book are also amazing in locking you up in your room for extended amounts of time. 10/10 best book and experience of 2021.
@@Abundy i don't want to get into spoilers so i'll be vague but i think that the pacing complements the events of the story! i definitely understand feeling like it's a bit uneven though. i just felt like it was intentional and enhanced my experience of the story. to me it was reminiscent of sanderson's comment on the structure of the final wheel of time book: "I've always enjoyed finding ways that the form of the story can shape the experience. Shaping chapters and scenes to shape the reader's experience not just with words and ideas--but with format. Great video Jake! I appreciate how unique and genuine your videos feel - love that you truly just seem to read exactly what you’re interested in and your thoughts on them are so insightful and pointed. Others have mentioned it in these comments but you clearly emphasize the journey and experience of reading over the product of simply having read and that feels quite unusual in BookTube.
I randomly happened upon this video, and it was really interesting. A mix of stuff I’ve heard of, which motivates me more to get to it, and stuff I have never heard of, which pushes me out of my comfort zone. Thank you for the recommendations ;))
Great video per usual! I found this channel because we started wheel of time at same time but now I’m on book 7 waiting for your book 3 review 😂 all good though, read what you want at the end of the day. I took a break from wheel of time to read first law trilogy and omg is it amazing
Honestly, I love this list. I'm most interested in Butcher's Crossing because I think I'm feeling some strong fantasy burnout. Really needing a break from books that are 5 or 10 in a series and a one off western might just fit the bill. Some real strong choices and I love how you didn't go for trendy picks, just what you liked. Really refreshing list.
While I am definitely here for the memes, I do enjoy the book vids. This was a nice highlight of books I'd not considered (plus Oathbringer), so it's appreciated. Thank you.
When he said: " this video is sponsored by..." I started laughing so hard, then I was like: " - oop, he is not lying... well ... then... awesome!... yeahh "
I'd love to hear your take on Rhythm of War once you've read it. In my personal opinion it has the most impactful and emotional moments of the whole series. Great video though - I'm going to check these out once I have the chance.
the minute u recommended the gap cycle series in ur other video was the minute i marched down to the book shop and ordered it. (I mean wi a fascinating concept and a recommendation from Porter of The Thing how could i nowa…) I found that Donaldson has this way of writing that really just scratches an itch for me. He’s unapologetically ruthless when it comes to exploring the implications of the zone implant tech, among other …alien.. concepts (lawl hilarious), which makes for some intense and dark reading like u mentioned. I also suppose I’ve been starved of well-written, multidimensional female characters because I was really impressed wi the way he approaches Morn’s character - her internal conflict becomes a real focus in the 2nd 1 especially, and I so appreciate the depths he’s willing to dive into with his main 3 (although Nick doesnt seem to have had *as* much attention yet). I’ve nearly finished the 2nd book. It’s been so frustrating that exams wont let me complete it n eat up the rest of the series in peace
So glad you're enjoying it! I love how full of depth Morn's character is -- and you're right, Donaldson goes to the extremes when exploring these crazy concepts
Here's my favorite books of 2021 1. Crescent city by Sarah j maas 2. In the ravenous dark by a.m Strickland great fantasy standalone 3. Best served cold by Joe Abercrombie 4. The kiss quotient by helen Hoang 5. Wizard and glass by Stephen king 6. A little hatred by Joe Abercrombie 7. The prison healer 8. the wastelands by Stephen king 9. From blood and ash 10. Legendborn
I FUCKING LOVE STEPHEN R. DONALDSON. I felt like the only person in the world who read Forbidden Knowledge, and even as a fanatical lover of his Thomas Covenant series I was still shocked by how dark it was. Morne and Nick's deal they made about saving the ship was so shocking to me that I had to put the book down for a year- the very idea that human beings would barter for such things astonished me.
I love the memes, but I also love your book videos. I'm the same on Oathbringer being a great book but no the best in the series... Words of Radiance is living rent free in my head ever since I read it, tbh. I would love to hear your take on the Ninth Tomb series (2 books out, so far and it's REALLY different and out there) and also Rythm of War, once you get to it! Cheers.
Yay I missed your book videos, I've also been slogging rythem of war, I started it in september I've just been picking it up and putting it down for a while. Butchers crossing sounds really good, I already have so I'll try it out soon
Nice to see some book stuff again, not that your skits aren't hilarious. Best reads for me were Wisdom of Crowds and Jade Legacy, very happy with how both of those ended their trilogies. In general I can't recommend Joe Abercrombie enough, would love for you to check out the First Law books.
I bought the first 3 Donaldson "Gap" books on eBay awhile back thanks to your recommendation & I'm enjoying book 1 a lot. I just need my children to stop being so high maintenance so I can get more reading done. "Daddy, we're hungry, please feed us." Geezus, they're so needy. Dad's trying to read sci-fi.

Gap is brutal, but really well told
I randomly happened upon this video, and it was really interesting. A mix of stuff I’ve heard of, which motivates me more to get to it, and stuff I have never heard of, which pushes me out of my comfort zone. Thank you for the recommendations ;))
Great video per usual! I found this channel because we started wheel of time at same time but now I’m on book 7 waiting for your book 3 review 😂 all good though, read what you want at the end of the day. I took a break from wheel of time to read first law trilogy and omg is it amazing
its really weird not seeing a satire video from man carrying hting
Honestly, I love this list.
I'm most interested in Butcher's Crossing because I think I'm feeling some strong fantasy burnout. Really needing a break from books that are 5 or 10 in a series and a one off western might just fit the bill. Some real strong choices and I love how you didn't go for trendy picks, just what you liked. Really refreshing list.
Rythm of War is really good, I'd recommend it
This is why I love your channel.
u have junior year uni history professor that I have a crush on energy
While I am definitely here for the memes, I do enjoy the book vids. This was a nice highlight of books I'd not considered (plus Oathbringer), so it's appreciated. Thank you.
"you know where i'm going with this?"
i literally did not until the ad started.
yoo congrats on the sponsorship man! i’ll click the link just to support you
I finished black wings has my angel and it was really such an amazing experience and truly twisted. I want to read anything else by Chaze also !!!
That subtle transition to skillshare promotion got me 😂
Btw, love your vids!
(I mean wi a fascinating concept and a recommendation from Porter of The Thing how could i nowa…)
I found that Donaldson has this way of writing that really just scratches an itch for me.
I swear I was lowkey expecting a meme video when I saw the title. By the way, that stack of classic sci-fi behind you is pretty juicy!
Why is it that out of all of UA-cam, your segway into skillshare advertisement is the most convincing😅
Love your content man. Looking forward to your 2022 list in a few months!
Here's my favorite books of 2021
1. Crescent city by Sarah j maas
2. In the ravenous dark by a.m Strickland great fantasy standalone
3. Best served cold by Joe Abercrombie
4. The kiss quotient by helen Hoang
5. Wizard and glass by Stephen king
6. A little hatred by Joe Abercrombie
7. The prison healer
8. the wastelands by Stephen king
9. From blood and ash
10. Legendborn
Wizard and Glass is wonderful
My reading list is bigger now. Thank ya.
Your going up in the world
'Skillshare carrying man'
Ad transition was nice 👌
Thanks very much for this one -- great delivery. Looking forward to more like it.
Love how Brandon pooped up when you mentioned his name in 2:10
I love the memes, but I also love your book videos.
Picked up The Blade Itself recently. I plan to start it this year
Been curious about Sanderson for a while. Might need to pick one of his books up now!
