    The AT-AP is my favorite 3-legged walker of them all. It's a massive artillery walker capable of devastating whole companies of forces in moments. And it's symmetrical too with the third leg being in the middle for stability. So all in all a really good artillery and a great walker.

    The third leg is retractable so it’s capable of movement while in two-legged configuration. Not too mention the top rotating blaster mount is capable of firing in two-legged configuration as is the under mounted laser cannon. The third leg is used for stability when firing the mass driver cannon. It has the nickname of “Sniper Tank” for a reason. Able to annihilate enemy armor and fortifications from large distances. Best supported by an accompanying small infantry force imo.

    Even legged walkers seemed to provide great stability compared to the odd legged walkers, and it was more common senses that the more legs will provide more mobility and stability.

  • @Commander23c
    @Commander23c 2 роки тому +37

    Let’s talk about how the ATDT is essentially a smaller less effective version of the ATAP. Both are meant to fulfill artillery roles and the only argument I could see for the ATDT is that it’s smaller profile would allow more numbers and mobility. As for a prolonged siege I’d like more ATAP’s.

    I've always been fascinated by the Octuptarra Tri-droids, ever since ROTS and the Clone Wars. I actually would've really liked to see the Octuptarra Tri-droid as a reinforcement in Battlefront 2 tbh. Not the big one though, the one that was of a smaller scale from ROTS. The one that didn't shoot long range laser beams, but had these chain-fed ordinance launchers; it would've been fun to spam missiles from those lol.

  • @ryantully3947
    @ryantully3947 2 роки тому +5

    As a droid walker, radial symmetry and 360 degrees vision works best for the octupterra, because unlike manned walkers it has the ability to see in all 360 degrees at once and process it all together, something a manned craft couldn't do without a team or multiple screens or some kind of psychic connection. This lack of hesitation would be vital in the high-stake and fast-paced fighting of the clone wars, point being, radial symmetry just works better with droids than it does with manned vehicles at its size, if it was bigger than it'd be less a walker and more like a moving defense platform where total knowledge of all sides wouldn't be needed, because each side could and would only be able to focus on its own side, if made smaller, then radial symmetry would be impractical. Point being, the octupterra is cool and shows how the biology of organics limits the design doctrine of war vehicles to designs that work better with most organics, bilateral symmetry.

    Retractable leg has one invaluable function; that thing can’t trip forward nearly as easily with that thing deployed. Like if an AT-AT gets knocked over it can get back up, but an AT-ST cannot because it only has two limbs. The third one will make it harder for the very front heavy walked to tip when faced with the recoil of its main canon.

    I've heard the comment from several sources that tripods are extremely stable when stationary, but highly unstable when in motion. Having experimented with tripodal mecha myself, I agree that three-legged walkers are generally a bad idea. If you really want to take advantage of the tripod's stability, have a hexapedal (six-legged) walker, because then three legs are in contact with the ground while the other three are stepping, in a double-tripod configuration. (Look at how ants walk for more info.) The other advantage of a six-legged walker is that it can lose one or two legs without major penalty, or even three legs with moderate penalty.

  • @spockamania
    @spockamania 2 роки тому +3

    I'm... Confused... One of the griped with the three legged walkers is that, "You take out one leg and it's down". Isn't that the case with the vast majority of walkers? That's a walker problem, not a tripod problem, right? Maybe an AT-AT could survive with one leg destroyed, but I expect it couldn't move with three. AT-TE might be able to without one if it's one of the middle ones, I suppose, assuming the legs could hold that weight. Certainly all bipedal walkers would get wrecked with one leg gone. Them being slower does make sense, but probably doesn't necessarily have to be the case. Just is with the particular walkers of the clone wars.
    I guess my two cents is that three legged walkers are cool, even if most of them are just bipedal walkers strapped with so many guns they just needed a third leg for support. They're a nice mixup from an aesthetic/storytelling perspective, even if the actual machines created are clearly not designed by mechanical engineers. Would be kind of cool to see Disney hire a team of engineers to improve upon a bunch of random designs and see a whole new roster of walkers/hovercrafts designed to be super effective rather than just look cool. Albeit, pretty sure they'd end up with a Borg Cube....

    Its not so much the legs that make it better, or slower. Its the balance system. Three legs gets you static balance. Which gives stability. But changing its position is a time consuming process without a dynamic balance system to keep the vehicle upright when changing its balance point between given locations. Much like in more recent robots concepts in our reality.
    Two legs requires a dynamic system for the most part. 4 legs can have both, and with an extra leg to shift it's position with, it can have the best of both worlds. But its also more moving parts to coordinate. And theres more that can go wrong.

  • @calebbarnhouse496
    @calebbarnhouse496 2 роки тому

    Three legs are good for specialized situations, but what I'd love to see would be a quad walker with instead of a traditional leg for the front 2 is a single middle one that acts like a wall, allowing for infantry to be in it and ride into the battle untouched by enemy small arms fire, and them unload safely behind heavy armor, all the while the heavy front plate would still provide shelter if it is destoyed on approach

    The AT-TE's six legs and lower centre of gravity is the best approach for stability. The AT-AT is the physical embodiment of the Imperial military under the Tarkin Doctrine, big and scray, but not very effective in many situations other than "run straight at the enemy, try not to die".

    • @nicholastuttle2445
      @nicholastuttle2445 2 роки тому +1

      I've always though the AT-AT was great against opponents who lacked heavy armor of their own, it's height and low speed would make it super vulnerable to a low profile heavy tank. Can't dodge and easy to hit, but can really tear up an enemy who doesn't something with a big gun.

    In my down-to-earth design? Well, look up the British Tank Destroyer AT-8. Now, imagine putting two wide & thick legs, designed to step onto & crawl over various barricades, modernized dragon teeth included, in towards the front. It mostly still has that tank silhouette, however its extremely heavily armored, designed to tank damage & provide support fire so that the frontline engineers can clear the barricade that it just crawled over. Its 3rd leg is basically a push it forward leg, similar to the AT-AP’s 3rd leg, but willing to update the design based on how heavy this tank-tank is…
