This tool is perfect for writers to generate illustrations for their adventure and fantasy books! Though part of the fun in reading books is in the reader's imaginations, it's quite intriguing to see what is inside the writers mind when they write their story.

I think most people don’t understand the size of this. Dall-E 2 is incredible!
A common misconception is that it combines photos. It does not! As Chris said, it’s like a giant brain.
When you tell Dall-E 2 to create an image of a dog wearing a hat, it does NOT take a picture of a dog and one of a hat and combine it with AI into one picture.
No, Dall-E 2 knows what a dog is, what its characteristics are and the same for the hat.
Then it creates a completely new image based on its knowledge.
It’s like when you read the phrase „dog wearing a hat“. You probably saw some sort of picture in your head. The AI does the exact same except its imagination is way more precise.
Truly fascinating and a huge step in technology, one of the biggest perhaps.

It's similar to why very few people carry, or even own a high quality digital camera anymore. Why, when your phone can take "close enough" pictures, and is way more convenient than hauling a studio quality camera around for just a relatively small increase in quality.
There will still be a place for talented artists, but the demand for their services will plummet, just as the demand for stand-alone digital cameras has plummeted, because people will usually choose the quicker and easier route, even at the cost of a bit of quality.

@@LilBigHuge Nope. An AI will never be able to get composition, lighting, proper values, colors and anatomy just right. It will never be able to replicate what you are imagining in your mind on paper, just random suggestions based on that. At best, it will oversaturate the market with mediocre art that has no value because anyone can press a button to generate it. There is value in scarcity. "Random generation" does not belong in art. It takes over 10 years of drawing daily to learn how to perfect art into placing on paper WHAT YOU WANT TO THE SMALLEST DETAIL, not just generate mediocrities that look muddy or photobashed.
And as a side point, tech bros are delusional, and this novelty will in the end serve as inspiration for the artists themselves. If you want to learn how to make art, do what the artists do and work your ass off doing the art yourself. Human creation will always be more appreciated than a soulless machine.

    • @FriendShadow

I don't think AI will ever replace real artists, I think we all know that no matter how good AI will be it will not have the soul or the personality of the artists. It might generate an image that you want, but it'll never be *exactly* like you'd imagined it would be, which is why I don't think the artists will ever be out of their job.
However, I can definitely see this AI being used as a tool for inspiration or reference, maybe even used as a foundation, being generated and then edited to how you wish it would look like. There's a lot of potential for this AI, but I don't think it will take away artists' role, unless it somehow achieves sentience but at that point we've got different problems to worry about.

I see a lot of cool use cases for this, such as creating a cover for your book or music album, etc. HOWEVER... This could really impact the art community completely and maybe for the worse. Now those who are following creating picture art as their career may see this as a competitive threat. Now, anyone can get a picture of whatever they want within seconds of request. I guess you can make the argument that the AI needs training data to become smarter... But with that being said, there's also AI that generates its own music. So what a time we live in where now there can a seemingly infinite unique forms of art and music with the use of AI. Will movies be next? Will dance performances be next? Who knows?
Interesting questions that just came to my mind: If I generate a picture with the use of this AI, would it then be considered my property? How would you claim that an AI generated image is considered your work even though you didn't make it? Is it considered plagiarism to download the generated image and it for your benefit?

    Nitpicks
    1) DALL-E is typically pronounced similar to WALL-E... so like... "dolly"
    2) 0:06 "DALL-E is an open AI". OpenAI is the name of the group / company
that made DALL-E 2, as well as GPT-3 and AlphaFold and other stuff.
    3) "It's basically a giant brain that uses the whole of the internet to
create unique imagery within 20 seconds". I feel like this might give the
wrong impression. AI models use training data, most if not all of which
likely came from the internet sure, but probably quite a bit of human effort
was spent screening which images were acceptable. Anyways, important point is
that after the training data is collected, there is no need to scour the internet again.
    4) 0:36 "Input your information and wait". I would say "your information" sounds
like it's asking for information about you. Better term would be "prompt". Though
I don't think anyone was confused with what you actually said.
