I like Kaz, but he has that problem some "smart" characters have. Hes supposed to be a super genius, but we never see how or why he reaches the conclusions he does, so it seems like hes pulling his masterplans out of his ass.
I almost wanted to compare that type of character to Batman as played by Adam West in the TV series, but at least that character actually did explain his thought process, even if the deductions are infamously bizarre.
Honestly, if she just leaned in it, he would be much better character
I really didn't like Kaz, and it's rooted in the fact that he's so young. I am now at the point where I despise characters that are master-skill-level children. Ain't no way a 17 year-old is outwitting crime lords who have existed in the underworld for twice the time the brat's been alive. He wouldn't even begin to have their level of connections, and that's what clandestine criminal activity is all about: having the people who can make your wrongdoings disappear. If we'd watched him gain them, that's one thing, but we don't. Everyone already has everything they need to win at the very beginning of the book.
yeah, that's what I thought too. If the characters were just like mid-late twenties, it would be so much more believable.
Kaz really reads like a grizzled 30-something noir detective whinging about his fridged wife and not a child whose brother was killed in front of him.
My biggest problem with six of crows was that everyone praised it as a great example of the "found family" trope, but the Crows never felt like a friend group of 6, rather 3 pairs of couples who just happened to be coworkers. Every pov was so bogged down by either individual trauma or relationship drama that it never felt like the 6 came together as a cohesive unit
I agree. I love them individually and I can sort of see them developing friendships (Nina and Inej, Jesper and Inej) a little bit, but there's honestly not a lot of time to let that happen. And I wish there was, because that would have been really good for Matthias's character developing.
That's exactly it. They felt like the Persona 5 cast, but fans promised the Persona 4 cast.

Thank yoooou! I just finished the duology and also felt it was fine, but certain aspects bothered me--this is probably the main one. I jumped to this because of the "found family," but it really didn't deliver in what I want to get and feel from that trope. (To me it's like the difference between ATLA gang vs. Korra gang)
I think there's a problem with teen characters because most of us remember ourself as these mature little adults. I moved out at 15 and I never thought that was especially strange, but the other day I encountered this pimply little CHILD who was 15 and it took me a minute to recover. Like this child shouldn't be outside without adult supervision but I babysat at 12? Was my puberty a fever-dream? When did I realize we all looked so awkward? Do kids now know they look awkward? Do they think they're adults, too? Am I old? Can I blame this on TV? Are there kids on my lawn?
Its not like you cant make teen characters cant be confident , and cool. Even way much more that it should be.
But there can ne dark reasons why they were forced to be and traumatized,
Or the daria route if like the characters point of view is just really clouded with personal bias and pretty normal self absorbedness and some ,
like oriorities,ignoring stuff at a later age they might look at,ok that was immature or dumb, but like teenager can act dumb andlike mistakes build experience. And its kinda important there to focus on the needs and explore that, it just probably come across as self absorbed ,but also like yeah whynot to find your identity.
There is i think kinda nice ifyou have characters that are teenagers, competent but also can be cringe, in a funny way. With awareness?!
Like edgy teenage characters should always have awareness when they are. To not have it , like i love when astory takes time to make teenagers in amature story,just immature to a degree chilling fun teenagers.
I think the age demographic also plays a factor since I remember reading this book in high school and not batting an eye at their ages, but now that I'm older it's more something I notice is off.
This is one of those books that I like conceptually way more than I liked the actual execution of a lot of its characters/ideas. I call it “ideal fanfic material” haha
LITERALLY. I know people don’t feel the same but when I go to read soc fanfic I jsut want extensions of canon that focus on the characters and idea with a different heist/plotline. It’s not that these writers are better than bardugo I like her prose a lot of the time but fanfic as genre provides a lot more liberties that jsut makes it more enjoyable

I was a bit nervous to watch this video cus I really enjoyed six of crows, but it’s honestly so great to see three people with different feelings about a book all giving fair criticism.
I remember not liking Kaz in anyone’s pov other than his own and really hating that EVERYTHING that happened was “all a part of his plan”. Characters that are never wrong are boring imo
The book died for me when the first (extremely hyped) line for Kaz was "Kaz Brekker didn't need a reason." and then instantly showing how he absolutely needs a reason to do stuff. If it doesn't benefit him, he's not doing it. Which is not bad for a character, but I was extremely annoyed by the contrast to that first line.
I had considered that more telling of inej’s understanding of Kaz at that moment then Kaz himself since it is said in Inej’s pov
Yeah, I was gonna say -- Not to invalidate your feelings, but the line after that is "That was rumor" or something. So, yeah, it IS explicitly false; that's the point.
That being said, when I read this, I was not hyped for it. I think it worked for me because I'd seen Shadow and Bone the Netflix show and I liked it but I thought it had some problems. So I went into Six of Crows to look for "a better story for the characters I actually care about" and I thought the pair of lines was fine as an introduction. And this rumor contrasts the rest of the chapter's reality and sets up the exploration of truths and lies through the rest of the book

I get what your saying. But I feel like the contrast is the point tho. It’s the contrast between how people perceive him and his actual self. The facade he displays to protect himself in this world vs who he is. That’s a big point of his character. How he uses his rumors to his advantage. At least that was my interpretation of the book

In regards to Maria’s comment about Ocean’s 11, Bardugo had said that the story was structured like and inspired by the heist beats in Ocean’s 11 so the comparison there makes sense!
And for Katie’s comment about the story feeling like it was written for visual media. I heard Bardugo had plotted this story using screenplay beat structure and also used to work with movie trailers. That probably influenced her writing here!
I think Ocean's 11 works for 2 reasons: it's a movie, so we aren't in the characters heads. and it's competence porn, the crew is the best of the best who have been doing heists for decades, not a bunch of 17yr old babies. You can't just use the same heist beats 1 to 1 in a novel.
I saw someone else comment that Maria would hate Leverage but I will qualify this that I love Leverage and I still didn't enjoy SoC. I felt so disconnected from SoC throughout my entire reading experience. And connections with the characters are so important to me.
I love Leverage with all my heart so reading kaz in SoC was like reading a nate ford archetype that gets away with all the bullshit 😭 in leverage the rest of the team dont let nate walk all over them but in SoC everyone's like "well kaz is always right so 😣😣 gotta do what he wants"
Disconnection really is the word for the novel. It was. Like. Like im looking at what's happening and at every turn i just go 'why did you write that and why like that' and Talented But Not Competent is exactly what it is like will said.
@@yichng9088 I was the one who mentioned Leverage (and also love it), but I think you have hit the nail on the head re: why I love Leverage, but had some issues with the heist aspect of SoC.
@@mikouf9691 yesss always good to find another leverage fan out in the wild. i DO think if i hadnt had leverage as such a shining example of heist media in the back of my head i probably wouldn't judge SoC so harshly, a lot of heist media does rely on one exceptionally smart character to outsmart everyone else even their own crew as a trope/twist near the end. On the other hand i think its very hard to ignore how much bardugo loves kaz as a character once you notice it, she elevates kaz beyond all other characters and it really takes me out of the story when bardugo shifts the story to give him what he wants

Before pressing play, I'm an outlier who hasn't read anything by Leigh Bardugo. Thus I haven't read the Shadow and Bones series or Six of Crows, so I have zero attachment to the story or characters, though I'm aware the Six of Crows characters are beloved. So I'm definitely interested to hear what everyone thinks. My guess? Katie will love it the most and defend it the most, Maria will be somewhere in the middle, and Will may be the most critical. Let's find out!
Reading the entire book just from Matthias pov sounds like my own personal nightmare 😭😭

The audiobook for this is so good. It elevates the experience. I'm annoyed with how young the characters are. It feels like they wrote the story with 25 y/o but age it down at the last minute.
All the characters lacked either depth, plausibility or believability. I really had a hard time feeling any depth with any of their motivations or emotions. Where we had emotion, it was so melodramatic that I found it hard to swallow and believe. Where we had believability it lacked emotion. It was a very tryhard book and also VERY mismarketed - high fantasy heist it was not. And MATTHIAS HAD THE MOST STAKES AND CONNECTION TO THE STORY, MARIA IS RIGHT.
Me and Katie have the exact same feelings, the thing that ruins it for me is the moments where you can see the hand of the author when the heist works too well.
Just got to Maria saying “how is kaz hiding stuff from the reader when we’re in his point of view” and that’s my biggest gripe. I myself have thought that kaz works the best from other’s pov in the book. (reading from kaz’s pov works so much better in fanfic when plot doesn’t matter compared to the actual books where plot is everything, it’s a heist for gods sake)
The second book being kaz pov while the first isn’t makes so much sense, especially as the first book starts by showing us a kaz scene from inej’s pov. I think lees Kaz pov, not necessarily none but less, would’ve done a whole lot of good.
The romanve between Nina and Matthias was WEIRD! 😂😂 he was basically a nazi being racist against her the whole time! I literally got fed up halfway through and skipped like a quarter of the book (the nina & matthias parts). It’s interesting to have him as a character, but I can’t get behind him as a love interest with someone jewish coded.
As a character with stakes in the plot, Matthias is for sure the best of the bunch, and in a different book he could've been used to tell a much better story.
As a badboy love interest he is the cheapest bargain bin option you could go for.
Yes! I wish he had been the sole protagonist of the story, and without Nina. Inej’s plot especially was made so hollow next to Matthias: a commentary on racial fetishisation next to a romance reminiscent of raceplay between Matthias and Nina. It made me feel like the author either didn’t take their own story seriously or thought they’d get away with it if they were self aware.
Yeah, I cannot understand the (spoiler alert for the second book to anyone reading ig.....) absolute devastation I see people exhibiting about his death in the second book. Like, yeah, I'm glad he improved and all, but I could *not* get behind him when he spent most of the first book simultaneously fantasizing about killing and fucking Nina. Reminiscent of racial fetishization but honestly even just how some men are about women in general, no thanks
Slow burn only means that the couple takes a long time to get together. They might not have feelings at first and develop them over time, or they might have feelings from the beginning but neither of them act on it for whatever reason. From what I remember, Kaz and Inej could be described as slow burn since they take the whole duology to become a couple.

I had much of the same gripes yall did, but I would love to see your take on the sequel. I liked it MUCH better, the first book was boring but the second has more going on. Kaz is still weirdly op, but the Jesper and Wylan segments were great, and the multiple heists helped with the pace
Sooo I'm a dumbass and read CK first and thought it was a standalone and fucking LOVED it. Beyond loved it. One of my favorite books. Then I read SOC after and I loved it too (sorry will) but CK as a standalone is absolutely possible and iconic.

The author is fully aware she wrote about child prostitution. It is clearly portrayed as bad. The woman prostituting children is bad. Being prostituted is traumatizing for Inej.

I am furious that the Crows weren't just given their own show. But I think they were cast *perfectly*. Those actors were flawless in their roles and were pretty damn close to how I pictured/heard them in my head.
I actually kinda loved how Bardugo wrote their backstories. Not as actual flashbacks with their own chapters but more as memories the characters are thinking about in the moments of their current stories. It felt more fluid that way and put me in the headspace of each character.

Maria would probably hate "Leverage" (tv series). Every episode is a con and eventually has a "it's going wrong...but it was the plan all along." I loved it though.
I wanted to love Six of Crows, but I thought it was fine. I found it difficult to suspend disbelief. Comparing it to an anime is actually on point.
I actually disagree. Leverage rarely went "oh yeah, this mistake was part of the plan". The characters actually go "shit, that wasn't how we wanted it to go/ we didn't account for it. Now we have to think on our feet to get around this issue". Really, Leverage gets it right in how the characters aren't omniscient and it's actually their own short sightedness and blunders that results in the later half shake ups at times.
I really love six of crows. But I have to say the “this thing going wrong was actually the plan” is one of my least favourite things ever, bardugo tries to justify it but it doesn’t work. My least favourite thing in soc, the moment it kind of breaks for me is when it’s told to us that the whole time kaz has been vomiting up lockpicks that were in his stomach the whole time. The audience had never seen him do that and we’d been in his pov enough to at least be aware of soemthing like that. It feels cheap and like bardugo is cheating the audience.

Another good reason to do multiple POV can be comedy. Terry Pratchett does this very well. We get the thoughts of many, MANY characters in his books, and often the choice of whose it is comes down to: "Which person would be more humorously confused by what's happening right now?" And often it is some random waitress or shopkeeper who we will never see again...just because them trying to make sense of what the actual main characters of the book are doing is hilarious! Or the narrator is explaining how two or more characters are having completely different experiences of the same interaction, like with the nuns winking scene in 'Good Omens'.
'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' does the same thing, where we get these little POV sections not only from all the main characters but from, like, a missile that just turned into a sperm whale as it tries to come to terms with life in the short space of time before it splats into the ground. Gold.
I’m only 20 minutes in so you may discuss this but the thought popped into my head now as you were describing Jesper. I love this book but it does disappoint me with how Jesper’s gambling addiction is treated as a silly quirk. I had a family member who struggled with gambling and I’ve seen first-hand how it affects a person. He’d go missing for hours. By the time we finally found him, he would have already thrown away thousands of dollars. We couldn’t trust him to just simply drive home from work. My opinion on Jesper’s gambling addiction is similar to what you guys said in your Cyborg Tinkerer video about Bastian’s ED. Addiction isn’t a trait you can just give a character and move on. It’s something that affects your entire life. I’ll give Bardugo the benefit of doubt that she just didn’t realize how serious gambling addiction is.
I love this so much. Perfect analysis of this. So, I listened to Six of Crows a few years before Shadow & Bone on Netflix was released. I remember it being... fine? I'm with Kate. I probably won't read/listen to it again, but it was fine. Midrange. I think the main reason why I enjoyed it so much is that many of the voice actors. Jay Snyder (Dan Green) was the voice of Mewtwo from Pokemon and I was always happy to hear that POV... which I can't remember which character it was, but oh well. 😂
I'd say the book was too busy with the many POVs. Getting the POVs down to one or two would've been much better. I grew tired of the constant switch. I didn't actually enjoy the heist that much. I felt the wrong things were the focus in this book. I think it would've been better if it'd been more character focused/driven rather than plot driven.
When Shadow & Bone the show came out, I LOVED it so much better than the book. I realize the Crows were a bit shoehorned into the other plot line, but UGH it was so needed. They made it so much better. They made the meh plot line of the original material shine better. The Shadow & Bone book, though? Yikes. I'd be interested to see what you all think of that now because I dislike that book and its sequel far more than Six of Crows. The show was better for me (or just more enjoyable), but also not perfect.

1:04:49 I love different POVs in books. Because I am the main and sole POV in my own life. I read books for different opinions and lives. I actually dislike books with only one POV. A book with one POV has to be a whole lot better for me to like it than a book with several POVs.
Listening to this makes me hope they read "the thief" by megan whalen turner one day... Especially in regards to the character perspective.

I really appreciate Katie's point of view in all these reviews. The way she always manages to find an upside resonates with how I see books. I'm sure she's an awesome editor/critique partner since she seems to always look for the author's point of view and what they were trying to achieve.
On multiple POVs, yeah, Dune is very good at using it, though in later books it gets phased out a bit and becomes 3rd person-limited. If used well, multiple POVs can enhance the tension, so you can switch from one character to another at just the right time to not give everything away if that makes sense. From the sound of it, Leigh Bardugo wrote all the POVs (which is a good way to pick and choose) but her problem is that she couldn't bear to part with any of them.
PS: Not book-related, but OMG Katie looks so pretty in those colours!

I tried to read this book a couple months ago, but I found it so boring and started wondering what I was missing since everyone else seemed in love with it. I feel vindicated now lol
Edit: I agree that the book would have made so much more sense from only Matthias' POV, but I still wouldn't have liked it, because I didn't enjoy being in his head. He was one of my least favorite characters both in the show and in what I read of the book because he was truly giving n o t h i n g.

Everyone in the comments is saying that the sequel is much better. So i just wanted to say that I think this one is the better of the duology. Crooked Kingdom has a too many things problem. There are also a lot of characters from the Shadow and Bone Trilogy appearing.

I so needed this video. Leigh has a lot of imagination, but is literally just bad at writing. She literally cannot use past perfect tense correctly and her editors don't seem to care.

Have you guys read Joe Abercrombie? the First Law series? I also tend to hate multi POVs but this is a huge exception. Also has the physically disabled mastermind character model you were wishing Kaz stayed true to. It’s one my favorite fantasy series. Especially the sequels. I think you guys would love it

The complaint about Kaz being physically skilled as well as the brains of the group really made me think of The Lies of Locke Lamora. The brains of that group, Locke, is explicitly not great at physical feats which is always very amusing to read. Very good book.
This video would have been 35 minutes long if y'all had just said that Matthias needed a Zuko-esq redemption arc

Thank you for the review ! Just by seeing this book cover and reading the synopsis I had major doubt I would like it. (That YA vibe, been burned enough) And effectively, just by hearing you I know I will probably NOT like it at all. There could be an interesting discussion about another of publishing many MANY problems. Of making characters youngers to appeal to another demography. Despite it not making any sense and the majority of reader being way older. Seriously publishing (and 99% of media frankly) what's your problem with adults and elders ?!

I personally stand by that in order to truly enjoy this duology, it's important to have read the initial trilogy in this world, shadow and bone, first, or else I feel like you can't appreciate this book as much as one would 😅
I think they dod read the first book. But also I hadn’t read the first trilogy prior to reading this duology and really enjoyed it.
I will say, I think the fact that Bardugo had to write this story off the existing (and flawed) world and story she already made, makes me appreciate her writing here more haha

The first five minutes and I feel like we’ve gotten every sort of element of discussions I’ve had about soc with people I know. I love kaz, but I get why people don’t like him it’s very your mileage may vary. I think the criticism people have about kaz that then sort of extends to the other characters really exemplifies a lot of the reasons the books fall flat to people that aren’t to do with plot. While *I* have a lot of a criticism of the plot of soc that’s not really what people come out with first when they tell you it fell flat

Regarding their age, it may be strange to us that they are 16/17, but in universe it makes sense? Like, Alys is just a few years older than Wylan and appeerently noone cares that she's the new wife. It wasn't that long time ago that children were working in factories and they were treated as "small adults", so it would be natural that a lot would happen to them

Also kaz suggesting that to nina sounds like a good conflict and how he is questioned for just using them by , kaz is smart,did he had that always that planned?! Did he just use us? Would not be far off.

I have discovered, to my surprise, that I own and have read the entire _Shadow and Bone_ trilogy, and yet I couldn’t have told you anything about it if I’d tried.
Try reading “A Winter’s Promise: The Mirror Visitor” by Christelle Dabos. I’d love to see your critiques for that book, whether you liked it or not. I think the rest of the series is important to character development not seen entirely in book one. But I want to see what y’all think.

It would be interesting if you did a book with a child protagonist and talked about if that character felt more like a child than all of your teenagers. Fly by night and Inkheart both have protagonists who are a little younger than teenagers.

It makes me happy that this trio had to give a disclaimer at the beginning: "It's not that bad."
The TV show brought me to Six of Crows which brought me back to fantasy/sci-fi reading generally. And I honestly can see some of the points made. This is the first time I thought Will was too hypercritical and his commentary didn't convince me of his perspective. Though I thought Matthias was underutilized, I am surprised how much they rooted for Matthias to be more of a main character. I am also a HUGE fan of multiple POVs and find it a refreshing take from possible unreliable narrators.
