I’m 40, I grew up in the days when Tennessee was beating up on the SEC. In the early to mid 90’s when Payton Manning, P price, Lenard Little, etc was dominating.

@@KornPop96 best game I ever witnessed was when we beat Florida in 98 in Knoxville. It was the last game on turf. We stormed the field. The fraternity tossed the goal post in the river and was fined by ESPN I believe. Every single store on the main drag was sold out of alcohol. It was a party til the sun came up!

@Josh_Morris we must be close to the same age because that was my freshman year at UT. I didn't go to any games, but I did watch them all at home. As a UT fan, I grew up in the days of Johnny Majors and Pat Head Summitt. Those days were amazing. Then we got the Natty with Phillip Fulmer. From then till now, we were just holding our breath. Now, we have the coach and players to be scary.

I love Coach Heupel but Danny White deserves some credit too. He was an underwhelming hire at the time, but has done an amazing job helping to turn around TN sports. We went from being mid to bad in every major sport, to winning a natty in baseball, being a perennial basketball contender, and back to being relevant in football. The dude has done a tremendous job. I lived through the dark days and it’s just amazing to finally make it through to the other side. Thanks for the video, I’ve got mad respect for you.

Donde was smart when it came for her search for an AD. She heard of White and saw what he did at Buffalo. White hired Lance Leapold at Buffalo and their football team won their conference, won 10 games consistently. AD White also hired Bama's current basketball coach. Did fantastic in hiring in other venues at his schools with a high success rate. AD White had Frost as UCF. Saw Heupel's talent hired him at UCF after Frost left. White also is a marketing genious when it comes to building venues. He's worth every penny. Donde Plowman really did her homework and even hired an agency to help her find who was succeeding the most with the rest numbers and the agency came up with, AD White, best investment. Boom, hired. AD White imo, always had Heupel in mind and after all his potentials, only one did he call. New offense, new look, new HC he knows is talented, nw marketing across the entire school. New support and that's lead to championships and a national title in baseball. He's given Tony everything he's needed to succeed. More will follow.

You’re right. And he obviously knew something no one else did. I remember shaking my head in amazement fully believing that we were never gonna get a good coach. Then I watched him coach and it didn’t take long for me to recognize the man was no Butch Jones or Jeremy Pruitt and he damn sure was no Derek Dooley!

When Heupel was hired we lost over 30 players, sanctions were looming and mediocre coaches were turning down the job. Danny White and Donde plowman (especially Donde) are the real reason it got turned around. She cleaned house and hired arguably the best AD in the country. Heupel was a homerun hire and we could see the difference in year 1 in the program from the previous regimes.

TN fans are some of the most dedicated and loudest fans in all of college football... There have been away games where the TN fans were still so loud that the TN fans drowned out the home team fans. TN fans are as much the team as the players... it's the only team like that and it's crazy.

Some of us have been to Norman but mostly it's been a minute. Don't look now but nearly a decade. Cities change in scope during the times we play teams, so always different. Texas, well, unless your north of 60 you probably haven't been to Texas for a game since 1969 when the last time TN played them and Texas has never come to Neyalnd. Tennessee literally played in the SEC championship in 2007 lol.
Also: Tennessee didn't "suck" for 15 years. They had some sucky years and some average years. Finished ranked several times from Dooley to Pruitt. Those years did suck for Tennessee, because Tennessee is a blue blood program. If it had been just an average Power 5 program, nobody would have thought anything about it.
Even with Kiffin, Tennessee wasn't considered a sucky program, they were considered a powerhouse that was struggling. Dooley was the hire that never should have been made and destroyed the culture to the point recruiting went down, and without the portal, no reputable coach wanted to take the job. It was the closest a program has come to the "death penalty." Wasn't the same team anymore. Butch Jones limped along and Pruitt was fool's gold. Heupel came in and they got sanctioned, and then he lost over 30 of the best players they did have. What Heupel has done has been nothing short of miraculous. Tennessee didn't just have a rough stretch, the entire program was transformed into something it had never been. Tennessee has always been a big time program, top ten all time wins, 6 (yes 6, not 2) National Championships and 13 conference championships. Their rivalry with Alabama built the SEC and their rivalry with Florida built the East when divisions were introduced. Tennessee never sucked, they just sucked for Tennessee, because Tennessee is college football royalty.

From 2007-2021 Tennessee had only 6 winning seasons, with 2 of those being 7-6 seasons, which is definitely a failure for UT. In that stretch we went 5-7 five times, with 4 and 3 win seasons thrown in there as well. We also only went over .500 in the SEC twice in that whole period. That stretch was a colossal failure for UT football, and we were a laughing stock to the good SEC teams.

Some HS age Georgia fan: "How can you be a fan of a team that is so bad?"
Me: "I've been a Tennessee fan all my life."
HS age Georgia fan: "They suck you should get a new team"
Me: "You wouldn't leave your GF if she got a bad haircut or gained some weight would you?"
This young Georgia fan almost said, "YES I Would."
He knew 100% what he was about to say. I knew 100% what he was about to say. The look on his face said it all, and the look on his girlfriend's face said she knew exactly what he was about to say. They turned and walked away. We always have been able to recruit but having someone who knows what to do with those weapons is a different story. Butch had Jauan Jennings, Josh Dobbs, and Alvin Kamara, didn't develop them like he should but they succeeded despite his horrible development. This was inevitable, but I'm glad Tennessee is getting the respect they deserve. It's nice to see them create a base for respectability among the college football world once again.

As a big Oregon fan in Pittsburgh, PA my parents took me and one of my friends to the Tennessee game in Knoxville in 2010. We had 4 tickets. We decided to rent an RV for the weekend of the game. The Tennessee fans we parked next to were awesome and welcoming to us. The Ducks were just starting to be a national title contender. I have wanted Tennessee to go back to being a team that was good again since that trip. Go Ducks!!!!

52 here. My oldest son was born in 2000.
I've been a Vols fan since the time our QB1 was taken in the first round of the MLB draft. There's been lean years and really good years. However, through it all the Vols were always solidly competitive, the '86 Sugar Bowl being a prime example.
There simply was NO EXCUSE for Tennessee being as bad as they were, for as long as they were. I'm glad AD White brought Josh Heupel here. I hope he stays as long as Gen. Neyland did.

I'm glad you saw it Matt, but people did not understand during that 2022 run, Tennessee had a roster that should of finished 5-7 or 6-6. Heupel's offense is the reason they are so good, but also he was able to get the most out of those 3 and low 4 star players. Hooker in anyone else's offense would of been an average to possibly above average player. Milton wouldn't have started at any program in the SEC or Big 10, but NOW we now have a top 5 QB in the country ( I think top 3) and high 4 stars mixed with some 5 stars on that roster. I don't think these first 3 games are because of the competition we played and I believe it is going to show tomorrow night just what Heupel can do with a REAL roster. GBO GBDH

Yeah, we had some dark years and a lot of disappointment, but boy it feels good to be back and hopefully getting some well-deserved respect. Also, anyone remember when Lane Kiffin dodged out of town like a thief in the night and dissed Tennessee's fans? I forget what he called us, maybe low energy or something to that effect? That was a pretty jaw-dropping statement, because Tennessee fans are nothing if not passionate.

I thought Pruitt was the final nail in the coffin for this program, but it actually resulted in us getting competent leadership for the first time in 20 years.
