Too much emphasis is placed on TX power. Of course more power does increase range, but not by as much as most people think. What matters more is the combination of skip conditions, operating location, and antenna efficiency. QRP SOTA guys know this.
yes, because people go to summits during their every day-to-day travels. A mobile radio will always be better off with more power output, because you can be in many different types of situations. Also QRP SUCKS. I don't respond to QRP dx on 10 meter. I pretend I can't hear 'em and tell them to buy an amp :D
I'm a ham and a truckdriver. I've never understood why people get their mobile radios turned up on tx power. It's insignificant, a good antenna mounted correctly will make all the difference. You can turn the audio up and usually add a touch of reverb to enhance the tone. Bob Heil agreed with me on that one. Some radios are built better than others. A cobra 29 made in the Philippines is a desired radio. All radios are within fcc limits. It makes no difference what you buy other than what the audio section has to offer in the radio. Uniden pro 510xl is another audio monster.. Doing things to these radios outside the audio section creates a splatter box. If anything, I would turn the radio down in power and adjust the audio. Don't waste your money otherwise.
@@robinthurston3382 If you adjust it in a way that the output measurement on a meter swings backward, it will distort.
What is all this talk about high output? I don't think any of these can compare to my CPI CP2000 and CPI CP2500.

Ranger SS -158FB4 or 64FFB4 are 10m radio's, easy jumper mod to add 11m, 200w Fm/Am Ssb 400/450(pep).
Only mentioned these as your 1st radio is a 10m McKinley, the Rangers are 2 radios I would consider importing from the USA, but be $700+ to do so, Aytone 5555/6666 are both 10m radios converted for 11m, so not technically cb radios.
In my opinion, once one gets into cb they will learn it's about having a quality radio with the antenna being the most important. It's all about the proper antenna. In other words, one can burn a lot of watts into a poor antenna setup and not have the capabilities of a setup with a moderate amount of watts output with a great antenna.
Yup yup! And get a premium antenna cable with premium connectors, and get the proper length for your antenna ( what it was tuned for) usually increments of 3 feet. A good mic can make a big difference. And properly installing your antenna ( location ,grounding, tuning with a good SWR meter). There are a lot of other things yiuccan do to improve your signal as well. I'm not an expert by any means. I just know what I know from trail and error and watching UA-cam videos. Why do CB radios never come with a choice of antennas. No one ever seems to discuss how many pins to look for or what kind of an antenna to buy with these radios.
My favorite is still the CRT 9900 SSB Radio.
I thought the Uniden BEARCAT 980 had a AM feature. This youtube seems to indicate it does not. A button on this radio states AM-USB-LSB so that seems like a complete swing and a miss by the author.
Question, I also like those radios, but what test have you done to conclude they are the most powerful CB radios on the market and in that order?
they are not they all come 4w or less now after tuning they will get more its better to get a 10 meter radio not many if any add ons needed as most things are built in

My Uniden 980SSB display is fading away. Is it the display or the control switch? Can I or a local shop fix? Is it worth repairing? Uniden wants $65 !
how about the "Albrecht AE2990 AFS/SSB"?
I have the 980 untouched and it's done the job for 3 yrs of abuse. Nice solid radio.

Going on a year for me. Only thing I dislike about the 980 coming from a Cobra 29 is that I got used to the RF gain being on a knob and I used it instead of squelch to cut out static. Wasn’t really super excited to give that up. Other than that, I’m happy with the unit.

The Alinco dr135dx is a great rig. FM is a UK Standard and it is easily programmable. It's sold as a 10/12 meter ham radio but can be opened up at the touch of a button or two. I have one, but I'm in the UK! !

I like the look of the bear cat honestly. I ride a Cruise motorcycle. I need to keep in contact with my lead. So maybe this will work?.
Distance between motorcycle groups is so short that any CB would be overkill, not to mention cumbersome. Check out the Baofeng UV-5R, they're $25 a piece on Amazon. Very similar range to AM CB with better audio fidelity. They have their own batteries and are handheld, so no need to cannibalize your bike for simple comms ;)
I think you should’ve included the uniden 885 highbred cb I think it’s overpriced and missing the side band feature but I still like it

I have a cobra 138xlr
I got a Realistic TRC 435 but without a mic. Can someone direct me to the correct microphones for this CB? What brand and where can I buy it. I tried hooking the TRC 435 up to my power supply and antenna, but I assume that, like my Cobra 29, the mic is an integral part of this CB's operation. My Cobra mic has a four (4) pin setup, this TRC 435 seems to take a mic with more.

Many have had the TRC radios converted to the standard 4-pin Cobra mic set up for that very reason. You might check ebay if you don't want to spend the money on getting your TRC 435 converted for the realistic mic which I believe was a 5-pin setup.
This is a bit comical, most truck drivers / steering wheel holders these days don’t know what CB is , when I was driving 16 or so years ago; Galaxy, Connex, Ranger, Emporor, etc were the beast; of course a jacked up Cobra 29 was always a mainstay, of course you had to have a linear of some kind as well ,,a monkey made or 2 way up on the mirrors was a plus. lol

The Connex 4300-300 is super powerful but super, super clean audio.
That is the radio everyone needs to guarantee theyre being heard whenever they key the mic, all of those little radios don't stand a chance

Well….. I hate to break the bad news to you but, I’ve owned the 980SSB for over a year and know that it does not come equipped with GPS. Did you mean wireless for its capability of using a wireless speaker mic? And like others who have viewed this posting, channel 9 is no longer used for emergencies. As far as I know, truckers use any and all channels. They are not restricted to 19 or 20.
These may be the best available today, but they can't compare to the radios of yesterday. My Buddy Base used a 6146 power output tube and could be easily tuned up. Wish I never sold it. If anyone comes across it, I have a standing offer of $2500.00 for my old Buddy Base, serial number 111 if in working condition and if including the working digital VFO connected to it at the time I sold it.

6L6GC or if modified properly a 8417. These radios sing d104 ceramic or crystal elements pre amplified or not mic audio on am and if biased properly on ssb modes very well. The balanced modulator tended to over work and cook the capacitors due to underrated power resistors that become unsoldered. Once modified properly and upgraded parts (diodes caps resistors) are installed as the replacements, this radio has cool correct operation hot rodded and comes to life! All tube radio. The browning or the Panasonic chassis Lafayette comstat 25a or colt black shadow or teaberry model T. Change the plate and increase negative bias voltage on the 6bq5 socket and use a 6cw5 in place of the 6bq5 it’s a 5watt tube the 6cw5 is 25w!
Kinda looking at number, 2. Galaxy DX959B looks like it might still function while being frozen in the arctic. LCD's are slow to non-responsive when frozen... My take anyways,

Powerful & fcc compliant radios do not belong in the same sentence. All of these units are factory tuned to ship just shy of the fcc 4w (am) output limit.
I thought that, by law, ALL CB radios had the same power output (until you connect a hot-box, that is).
Most of your 10 m radios are off and sold as "Export" radios... It's pretty easy to modify a radio to broadcast on 11 m citizens band. Really the FCC doesn't patrol the open air bands much anymore unless somebody is causing actual harm and even then it takes them years to do anything about it.
My Connex 3300 will WALK ALL OVER THOSE RADIOS. I DO HAVE AN OLD GALAXY 959 ALSO, AND A COBRA 29 LT AND COBRA 29.
So in comparison, is the connex more powerful than the galaxy ?
Well the ffc would love me back in the day a had a moded president grant pushing 50 watts with uppers and lowers plus to 600 watt linear amps and a 9 foot whip
totally disagree with this most powerful CB radio all of these radios are standard wattage from the factory yeah they're decent radios but to say they're the most powerful is not true the only wait you're going to make a radio more powerful is to hook up a linear amplifier to the radio like a pil 2 or 4 pill amplifier . By the way Channel 9 is no longer in use for emergencies and has not been for many years I don't even know why they talk about that anymore
FWIW, the CG still monitors ch9 (CB) at CG stations as you will be surprised by the number of boats that use CB radios vs VHF marine band radios. I agree about the land use of CH9, but the marine culture still does use it (and not Ch9/156.450mhz VHF).
Dobermanguy just fyi u can get more power from a radio without adding transistors and or pills.. peak and tuning will produce 20 watts from the bearcat.. around 30 from the galaxy.. and some cobras can do 40 watts with peak tune and mossfet mods.. I do disagree with some of this video but wanted to clear that up.. not everyone is running linear amps to get more than 4watts on am. Js.
@@hmm5916 those mods you are talking about make the CB non FCC compliant and are therefore no longer legal to operate in the USA, transmit is all about the antenna, i run a stock 4 Watt am, 12 watt ssb bearcat 980 ssb radio with a properly tuned sirio tornado 5/8ths wave ground plane antenna here in southern CA and talk to people on the east coast, New Zealand, Hawaii and a few other countries around the world without having to run any power what so ever.

Uhh, my 990ssb may or may not have an RM Italy 203 100W Amp mounted internally and no freaking way does it transmit beyond 100 miles no matter the damn antenna and especially not an eighth wave antenna. JEEZ, the crap you find on internet!

Galaxy’s suck they drift off freq the 980 bear cat is good but it’s weak on transmit the president is the best choice of the bunch. I suggest the anytone 6666 great audio and superior power out put to any mentioned here.
I am a former truck driver and have always used Galaxy radios. The new ones are not as good as the older ones, because they are made in china. But I doubt you will find ANY radio that is not made in china these days. The Galaxy DX959B and the President McKinley have an important feature that the Uniden does not have. An RF output control that lets you turn down the RF output so you can use whatever RF output booster you choose. 4 watts on 11 meters is worthless beyond about 2 miles under the best of conditions, an RF power output booster helps a lot with that, though they can cause you problems in many newer trucks/cars with chinese computers. To much RF can kill these cheap unshielded chinese computers.
Vietnam and Malaysia as of late.
1 year later, the LED display cuts off on my 980ssb showing parsed dots with temp., and the mic cord is frayed like paper great radio, big ears, but useless without the display

I've been cbing for 35 yrs and I have owned a lot of radios , byfar the uniden 980ssb is the true gem ....I have over 60 radios and my main base station ( yes I use this for my base with a 12v box) it's just a feature rich big display nice clean crisp talking radio

Of course, they exceed the FCC's allowable power output on both AM and SSB CB, but that's up to the operator ;)

I am contemplating getting the 5555 European version which is the CRT SS9900 which is 45w/60w(pep), not often I use Am in England.
Also I wasn't knocking the radio, I was just stating it was a 10m radio, if you want the extra power buy a Ranger or get an Amp 👍
Honestly the only radio worth buying on this list is the President - the Unidens just aren't very good modulation-wise and as far the Galaxy goes - any CB with an RCI board in it is just garbage - they drift and constantly need frequency adjustments.
A 200 watt kicker will keep most clowns from stepping on you.

The McKinley is a 10 meter radio which has been modified for 11 meters so it is not a true CB, therefore illegal to operate in the USA, FCC non compliant.

The most powerful CB radio is the one with 4 Watts AM and 12 Watts SSB and that pretty much covers every single CB radio out there for the last 50 odd years or so.
If it has more than these stated figures then its not a CB radio.
It would then be a non compliant radio and therefore illegal to operate.
Its the antenna and placement as well as cable and connector choices and supply voltages that have the most effect on power radiated with the 4/12 watts available.

That isn’t a sound meter but Signal meter. Bearcat 980SSB isn’t good if you prefer AM mode? It is AM and SSB radio
Other than export radios and modified radios, all CB radios are limited to 4w on AM and 12w on SSB, so "most powerful" is kind of a misnomer.
Any radio is only as good as its antenna system. Power doesn't mean anything if the antenna sucks.

My point was that the title makes little sense, while something like "best value" or just "best" cb radios available would make much more sense. Other people have points too, and MY point is that antennas are what really makes the difference regardless of a radio's power. You're stuck on power output - and that's OK. Seeing as you think antenna systems aren't relevant, you'd be the last guy I'd trust with an SWR meter.
No channel is exclusive for any group except channel 9. Channel 19 is certainly not exclusive for truckers and never has been.

Good radio, I've had one for 3 years and counting.
For radio amateurs, it has repeater shift, the receiver has very good ears.
For mobile, pair it up with a Sirio hp4000 and you will not go far wrong

I own two of the Bearcat 980 SSB radios, trash displays, zero parts availability, weak backlights, anemic sound, useless SSB capabilities because you can't lock onto frequency accurately because the display doesn't show the freq down to the 100's of hertz... And the WB receive totally sucks.
Hooked into my 60 foot tower with a Maco V5000 on it, 200 feet of RG213, and it can BARELY grab the feed from a NOAA weather radio station, 10 air miles away... While my $11 box o' rocks chinese special picks it up just fine.. go figure... Uniden missed the mark on this on, and this same POS is also sold as a Road King radio... Ignore the junk in the truck stops... POWERFUL means POWER OUTPUT and frequency capabilities as well as mode of transmission... IE- AM, FM, SSB, CW, digital etc etc...
Be smart get an anytone 6666 way more power extra bands etc.

Okay these are strictly “CB RADIOS” AM, SSB, not export radios, furthermore, out of the box not one is more powerful than the other, they come 4 watts max, and with the exception of the Galaxy, the others cannot be turned up to 30 watts making the Galaxy the only powerful one, as for the BEST radio in this lineup, that would be the President McKinley!

There are export radios that put out as much as 600w. Nobody really uses legal power if you're really into CB. Them Galaxies are absolute junk radios that drift off frequency all the time.
Obviously your lack of cb knowledge is showing. The Galaxy radios do not drift and are excellent quality. I have been running a 949 for years with no issues. Check your facts!
I have galaxy 99v2 40 pep ssb 45 pepAM has not drifted in over4 years yes the original "cb " galaxies were subject to drift but proper setup and hefty enough power supply regulated well holdsfreq very well plusmostall these radios you bragging on are not cb radios but 10 11 12 meter hf radios designed to be more stable than " cb" radios
Galaxy 11 meter and import 10 meter radios are well renowned for being SSB drifters. That is why you don't see six digit counters on them any more. From my Galaxy radio collection, only the 93t and 95t have a six digit frequency counter. SSB operation on the Galaxy radios, it is just a gimmick. Them three digit Galaxy models with the starlight face introduce noise to the recieve. Stick to the puke green display models. You want a mobile side band performer, Uniden Grant (not the president) or a Cobra 148 (no nightwatch or soundtracker) cannot be beat.

Here's one major issue I have with this channel and this claim. This is claiming to be the best of 2022 before this year has ended. If it was the best of 2021 I would say this is great news.

The 500 watt ones are ham radios the uniden is an actual certified cb, it puts out a nice clean low output which is really nice for running an amp
Cbs don't put out 500 watts. That power comes from 10 meter, ham radios. Not the same thing
Once again the galaxy 959b is also not the powerful radio and the uniden bearcat 980 is another radio that is not powerful galaxy 98vhp connex 3300 hp rci 2970 and the rci 2990 the rci 2990 the rci 2970 galaxy 98vhp and the connex 3300 hp are powerful radios
But remember he stated CB not modded 10/12 meter radios which yes from their design are to be more powerful due regulatory controls hi power on cb band could create interference since most cb radios are not designed with proper filtering on transmit to isolate the spurious ra donation
I personally use 99v2 for the reason it is 10/12 capable and mod is only wire relocate sure it peaks 40 watt pep with AM carrier at 14 hi enough to get over edge but not interfere local neighbors

This video is about quality not powerful. These are good radios but certainly not powerful at all. The Ranger rci 99n4 is quality and powerful.
