Excellent tips! At 71 years old we grew up with grandparents and parents that went through the Great Depression and they passed on those skills to my wife and I. I was a lineman for a utility and know how fragile the grid is today, and most do not have enough people on hand so the outages are much longer. I built a small solar system with a battery and inverter so we can keep the furnace, freezer, and fridge working during an outage. We are in a senior living complex and rent so my system is small but if we owned our home I would build a larger system, maybe go off-grid. My walks take me past storage units and when people leave stuff out for free I check it over carefully and repair fixable items that we can use, my wife calls me a hobo. Thank you for these terrific videos!
As a Widow of 81 yrs young, I know much about the Great Depression from my mother and grandparents also. I wish you were my neighbor. Blessings, Brother. 🇺🇸
I wish I knew how to do that. I tried looking it up on the internet but they seem to gear it more towards the folks that have some working knowledge of how it works in the first place. I wish someone one do a tutorial or video geared towards someone with absolutely zero knowledge. You know, the solar power for dummies lol.
I have a 30 watt solar panel that goes through a controller so you don't overcharge the battery, to a large 12 volt deep cycle battery hooked to a pure sine wave 1,000 watt inverter. I wired the furnace so if the power goes out she only has to move the plug from the main power source to the inverter. I wish I could use a larger solar panel but we rent our place so the trickle charger will have to do. The battery weighs 80 pounds so it is big. The inverter has two ac outlets and two 5 volt USB outlets.

Great tips. Thank you for sharing this. The crazy part is, none of this sounds odd to me, me and my brothers grew up this way (in the 90’s/‘00s). Not to sound toxic, but it sounds like a depression is what this country needs. We’ve gotten too entitled and too out of touch with reality!

Don’t forget foraging. My Grandparents had friends whose kids roamed for dandelion plants and prickly pear flowers to help stretch meals some cities have urban foraging clubs to find edibles in any landscape
I think you're right a lot of places are laying people off, restaurants and other businesses closing down people around me don't believe hard times are coming
We should always be prepared for hard times and emergencies. 1987 and 2008 caused hard times for many. A big prep is a wood stove and a shed full of dry firewood. Don't place orders on line when you can purchase locally with cash. Orchards, berry patches, and gardens will help with long term survival. Victory Gardens started with WWI. I have found that my local stores occassionally put most items on sale at lower prices than the big stores. Stock up then. I regularly get things much cheaper than Walmart. Good video. Sounds like you and your husband are a good team. My late wife and I were each others' other half and got a lot done together. She died from a tick bite 7 years ago. If you are in the easthern US be very aware of ticks and their diseases. Good Luck, Rick
I have been buying from Azure for years. Almost all of our food comes from Azure and local farmers. I honestly feel disgusted going into regular grocery stores. Azure is absolutely incredible!
My mother and her parents went through the depression of 5 mortgages and eating oatmeal 3 times a day, but my grandmother never turned any hungry person away. I learned frugality and conservative finances from them. My mother saved string, twist ties, used wrapping paper, buttons, all clothing (eventually rags), all yarn, etc. i learned to sew in and made all my own clothes. Sewing was so common that it is eas a big deal to buy storebought clothes. All clothes growing up were hand-me-downs, even bras. Socks and underpants tended to wear to shreds from one person. The most rewarding clothing was repurposed old clothing that was recut and sewn into updated fashions. I never made my clothes from flour sacks but i did make some things from the outsides of sheets that had worn through the middle. Clothing from China is so cheap that it is less than the cost of our fabric and notions. It seems like noone sews anymore. Even thrifters dont seem to rip and resew used clothing any more. I am glad to have more machine-washable options these days. And modern high tech boots and coats seem much more effective than when I was a kid. And I am also glad that attitudes around girls and women wearing trousers are much more reasonable now.
Be careful of the GMO flours when purchasing flour you might want experiment with ancient grain flour such as Emmer flour and spelt or use sprouted flour. Good luck in your making bread endeavor.
Watch out for weevils in your flour. Good protein but not tasty eating bugs. Better idea is to buy a $300 grain mill and buy steel-cut oats cheap and other grains and beans and grind all this into flour so your flour stays fresh. I eat lots of healthy pancakes made from popcorn, beans, wheat. Pancakes are quick breads.
They also knew how to fix things like plumbing systems, not everyone had electric in those days. So having spare generator or battery supply may be useful. With some basic tools, and know how to use them
A generator will only help you in semi-rough times, not if the national grid goes down. Hungry mean wandering refugees will hear your generator and think Oh boy, those people are prepared with food. And most people cannot shoot another human being.
Azure Standard - I prefer and trust their supplements. Excellent quality and a fair price. I love to make raspberry jam. Their 5 lb box of frozen raspberry PIECES are a steal at just under $13. Perfect for jam and smoothies. I’m a big fan of all of their frozen fruit. They have excellent Mason Jars too! It’s definitely worth looking into.
Can’t go wrong having canning supplies.Jars lids seals it is good to have vinegar canning pickling salt salt will not go bad if kept cool in dark area.Canning supplies will become hard to find in the near future.Automobile brake bleeder you can seal jars using it removes air and seal lid works great for dry goods bean rice oats exc.
I've been writing out recipes of the items I have in stock. I also buy recipe books of some the youtubers that I like how and what they cook. Sooner or later, they will shut down or limit the internet.
Some shops stopped selling torches in Uk. So but whatever ou will need asap. * i take pictures of items as it helps with planning for ahead and my next shopping n price comparing
Azure standard has organic non-GMO in bulk and cuts the middle man out. The warehouse stores have the middle man and do not cater to organic and non-GMO. Before you do your first order, find a first order coupon from any of the online homesteaders that endorse them.
I am interested in making pet food if I was unable to buy it. I look after a lot of feral cats and they eat north of 50 pounds of food a week. I can get squirrels, rabbits, deer, feral hogs, turkey, quail, fish, etc. I am not certain how to save it for longer term storage for animals so that I can continue to feed everyone in the event of shortages. I thought about building a smoker but I really don't know if they'd eat smoked meat (they are pretty particular for being feral cats). Maybe I could boil the meat and grind it up. Or maybe there is a way to make dry food like one would buy? I helped my mother to can when I was a boy but my job was just pouring paraffin on top of the jars after mother filled them with whatever she was canning and so I know practically nothing about doing that at all.
Do you have any tips for kids that are picky eaters? My boyfriend and I are trying to get more into homesteading. For both of us, when our kids are at the coparent's houses, they are used to eating fast food takeout or freezer ready meals, lots of snacks, and they aren't expected to pitch in to help with chores. When they are with us it's a huge struggle to get them to go along with our choice of a more simple lifestyle, and it results in many struggles. We have tried talking to the other parents, but that has yielded further complications rather than easing the stress.
Some parents have good luck with healthy smoothies! It can be an easy way to make it tasty with fruits, but also add other items like greens for additional health benefits. I've seen a lot of fun recipes online ☺
Be careful buying can goods by the case as then all of the cans have the same best buy date. If you do not have a large family that will soon use up that case of food, you might just want to get a few extra than what you would normally use each month, so that your extra cans will have different continual best buy dates.
@@larrysmith6499 Actually, it means the company cannot guarantee the same amount of vitamins and minerals, et. as the food is slowly decomposing and after that time degrades enough to reduce these. So, even if it will not poison you, it may not also provide you with the sufficient nourishment that your body requires. By staggering your purchase dates and thus your best by or use by dates, this problem can be avoided and you will consume better quality foods.
You are doing good and speaking to people without bringing fear to them. I'm surprised that this waking up would ever come. I'm fortunate that I have been doing this for many years, I live in the country, really in the country, nearly all my neighbors do this just like they always did. and I'm a 79-year old widower. For people on this site, listen to this lady. The only real problem if the electric goes down and you are even slightly prepared is the problem of hungry and often mean refugees, so work on having a community. And if you live in a rural area, never count on wild game for food. It will not last long is a bad time.
Hi from Salisbury NC. I noticed the dog/cat dish on the floor behind you. I have several pets in the home. Whats your advice on prepping where the pets are concerned? This was a great video, thank you for your ideas.

I haven't ordered from them before or thrive life! I have ordered from LDS, Augusonfarms, Mountain house, I've bought cases of meat from keystone meats
Although I really do appreciate your tips and your encouragement for people to be prepared, I do not fear the shtf scenarios. You may be asking yourself why. Well, part of it is probably because I am 70 years old and I have lived a very good life and if it ended today I would not be disappointed one bit. But mostly it's because I have always believed that people are either slaves or prisoners or both because no one was consulted before being thrown into this thing called life on earth. So therefore, we have no allegiance to anyone or anything and it is a cruel joke that people have this driving urge to stay alive when we have very little control over most of life anyway. A wise man once said that a good way to live this life is to "do the best you can and don't take life too serious." That is exactly what I do. Have a nice day.😊

I grow all my own herbs dry them and than run them thru the bullet machine so I have a couple if years worth if spices. Make my own vanilla don't eat process food
Thank you for all the information. 💗 I thank God for my pressure canning. I have been stocking up about 10 year, the lord put it on my heart. Your a Blessing. ❤

Good job, you should see my pantry. I have been prepping since 2018 and during Covid, I sat back and watched people rush and panic. My house looks like Walmart and cvs. CVS. Prepping have even gotten better since my investmnt portfolio with my financial advisor Abby Joseph Cohen yields significant profit enough for me to have spent about 40,000.00 on my food and water that can last about a year and a half. I have 2,000.00 cash at all times.
I went from no money to lnvest with to busting my A** off on Uber eats for four months to raise about $20k to start trading with Abby Joseph Cohen. I am at $128k right now and LOVING that you have to bring this up here
How can i reach this Abby Joseph Cohen, if you don't mind me asking? I've known her by her reputation at Goldman Sachs
@@SofyaRodriWell her name is 'ABBY JOSEPH COHEN SERVICES'. Just research the name. You'd find her details to set up an appointment.
Abby Joseph Cohen Services has really set the standard for others to follow, we love her here in Canada 🇨🇦 as she has been really helpful and changed lots of life's
The very first time we tried, we invested $7000 and after a week, we received $9500. That really helped us a lot to pay up our bills.
Great tips. Thank you for sharing this. The crazy part is, none of this sounds odd to me, me and my brothers grew up this way (in the 90’s/‘00s). Not to sound toxic, but it sounds like a depression is what this country needs. We’ve gotten too entitled and too out of touch with reality!
I grew up with grandparents who went through the depression. I also learned to can and ferment foods. May I suggest parifin wax also when stocking up on canning lids. I love your ideas and suggestions.
I appreciate the suggestion!! Thank you so much! 💛
I agree with the paraffin wax! I saw plenty of home preserves with wax lids on them in the '60s. It works...
really appreciate the way you go about informing on the preparedness side of things. You are very articulate and calm. I think it's a good thing to be well set in these areas whether or not anything disastrous happens. a lot of people think that being financially secure is just having money but really prepping or just being well rounded in these areas is a far better way to be financially secure.
I just found your channel and subscribed after watching a couple videos. Keep doing what you're doing. Best of luck.
Thank you!! 💛
Freeze drying! Have 6 months of food for hubby and I!
That is awesome!
Majority of people can’t afford it.
@@user-bi8ko7kc6h I waited years…….
but the amount of stress it has taken off of me! No garden needed, no vitamins or spices to stock, I can control portion sizes, I can control what I preserve, I don’t have to buy the expensive freeze dried products…game changer for me….and, by the time I’ve had it a year, it’ll have paid for itself.
I’d love a freeze dryer but at 72 years old I don’t think I would be able to have it pay for itself.
@@BusDriverShirley it is definitely a full time job, and exhausting! But also satisfying!
I no longer have to worry about having a garden (and pesticides and fertilizers), I don’t have to worry about storing vitamins and spices, I can control my portions, I preserve what we eat (I just cook double), I don’t have to spend a fortune on THEIR freeze dried food. I agree, it’s not for everyone…but for me…my stress level plummeted! Just things to consider…I get the aging thing, I’m there too…but also…food is NEVER going to get cheaper! Bless you! Take care of yourself! ❤️

We have several canning methods. Recently i saw a pressure canner at a thrift store. You can save a bunch looking for bargains at garage sales and thrift stores. You can also waste money making impulse purchases. Make a list of what you need and stick to it.

In other states check it out Ohio etc. maybe some freedom seeds to go with the sticks that use them ✌🏼✌️
Tks for the tips .im a prepper from south africa
Wow good luck there 😮✌️
We should always be prepared for hard times and emergencies.

Thank you so much for your feedback!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
My pleasure!
Smart and good looking!
I use to can when I lived in CA. I stopped doing it and now that I live in Texas but I'd like to start again.
Thank you so much for taking a minute to share this! 💛

I just purchsed a bread maker.I will get some flour and store in a bucket.
3 ingredient bread on Jenny Can Cook and no kneading
Don't forget to get yeast and keep it in the freezer.
Be careful of the GMO flours when purchasing flour you might want experiment with ancient grain flour such as Emmer flour and spelt or use sprouted flour. Good luck in your making bread endeavor.
Add your yeast to some sugar and water. This will rehydrate the yeast, upping the cell count of yeast.
I bought an All American and the Excalibur and I am hooked
That’s great!! ☺️
Just started canning love it
You definitely worked hard and gave maximum info in such a short time

They also knew how to fix things like plumbing systems, not everyone had electric in those days. So having spare generator or battery supply may be useful.
With some basic tools, and know how to use them
Good points!
A generator will only help you in semi-rough times, not if the national grid goes down. Hungry mean wandering refugees will hear your generator and think Oh boy, those people are prepared with food. And most people cannot shoot another human being.
Thre is that, thats why you need to go oldschool too, not just rely kn one item to do everything.
I did my first ever online purchase from Hoosier Hill Farm - powdered milk. I keep two kinds of powdered milk now, NIDO & Hoosier

Very good tips. Thanks for sharing.

Kerr jars hold up best for canning meat, don't tighten the ring completely also

Be careful buying can goods by the case as then all of the cans have the same best buy date. If you do not have a large family that will soon use up that case of food, you might just want to get a few extra than what you would normally use each month, so that your extra cans will have different continual best buy dates.
Great tip!
Best by date does not mean the food is not good at that date. If the can is not bulging or leaking, you can safely eat the food.
We are prepared. I reuse amazon bags to freeze my food. I repurpose so many things!!!
That’s great!!! ☺️
I just used sealer
What about those of us who live in really small places who don’t have the room to store all this?
If you buy Tattler canning lids you only have to buy them once as they are reusable.
I haven’t heard of those. Thank you for sharing ☺️

Hi from Salisbury NC. I noticed the dog/cat dish on the floor behind you. I have several pets in the home. Whats your advice on prepping where the pets are concerned? This was a great video, thank you for your ideas.
I make sure to have enough food, water, and other pet supplies for them as well (medication, etc)
We reuse plastic garbage bags, and mildly used ziplock bags we wash and reuse. Almost all the milk I use in my cereal has been canned. With 2 of us we cannot go thru an entire gallon of milk before it turns, so I can 3-4 qts.
I love your money saving tips!! Thank you for sharing! I’ll have to can milk one of these days! ☺️
So then do you need to can milk with a pressure canner? I’ve never canned milk before.
I haven't ordered through Azure! I must be the only person who thinks their prices are high.
I haven't ordered from them before or thrive life! I have ordered from LDS, Augusonfarms, Mountain house, I've bought cases of meat from keystone meats
Can someone suggest some go-to books to have on hand?
I list some of my favorites in my video description.
If you save rubber bands long term, be sure to place them in an airtight container, as they will lose their elasticity over time.
Good tip!
I, myself, don’t know anybody that can afford a freeze dryer, but that would sure be nice.
Dehydrators are a cheaper alternative.
A wise man once said that a good way to live this life is to "do the best you can and don't take life too serious."
That is exactly what I do. Have a nice day.😊
Don’t forget Em Comms !
