North of Asheville..58 year old Grandmommie. .I am in my 4th week of Hurriane Helene. No power. Just got cell service. So many people are suffering but getting by with help from one another. I feel bad.... I am fine. I have not had a hard time getting through this. Just taking care of myself is not a struggle. I am a minimalist andi I am strong. With that said ...my Bestie has decided I need to start canning. I guess that will start this week. Prayers for all that have lost so much. I have my home and auto......many others have nothing. These are strong mountain people that do not want to accept help.... these ,people, are special. I have witnessed the true grit of our people.... I have also seen tremendous love from people helping people. People from far away. Thank you for all the kindness. It is unbelievable . We will get through this. Love of one another...is amazing!!!

My microwave oven stopped working. So, I watched several repair videos and decided to try replacing a 'door switch' for $2 sold by Amazon. There was nothing to it.
The switch was held by a plastic clip and the connecting wires were fitted with wire-end terminals. Works like a brand-new one!

Excellent tips! At 71 years old we grew up with grandparents and parents that went through the Great Depression and they passed on those skills to my wife and I. I was a lineman for a utility and know how fragile the grid is today, and most do not have enough people on hand so the outages are much longer. I built a small solar system with a battery and inverter so we can keep the furnace, freezer, and fridge working during an outage. We are in a senior living complex and rent so my system is small but if we owned our home I would build a larger system, maybe go off-grid. My walks take me past storage units and when people leave stuff out for free I check it over carefully and repair fixable items that we can use, my wife calls me a hobo. Thank you for these terrific videos!

I have a 30 watt solar panel that goes through a controller so you don't overcharge the battery, to a large 12 volt deep cycle battery hooked to a pure sine wave 1,000 watt inverter. I wired the furnace so if the power goes out she only has to move the plug from the main power source to the inverter. I wish I could use a larger solar panel but we rent our place so the trickle charger will have to do. The battery weighs 80 pounds so it is big. The inverter has two ac outlets and two 5 volt USB outlets.

My mother went through the Great Depression. My grandmother darned socks because they could not afford new socks. I learned from her how to do that. Also shirts and jeans were cut up and made into blankets. Many of them were heavy duty materials so we had patchwork quilts on our beds. I also learned how to crochet and made a very warm blanket out of patchwork crocheted squares. It is really great to know I made it and we use it to keep warm in wintertime. I learned to make dishtowels out of flour sacks and embroider them with my grandmother. I am 69 years old and these skills are something I think more young people should know how to do.

It helps with space, I actually have never did any canning but I do have some supplies. I'm very well stocked in the meats and staples. It is very important to not only to be prepared and to continue to prepare, most of all and above all, pray, prayers to our Lord Jesus, he will guide, he will give courage and strength , harder times are coming and he is giving all of us time to get ready and continue with faith and prayers.

I'm glad you said your family doesn't waste food. My husband and i both grew up poor. We are comfortable now, but it took a lot of time and hard work. Anyway, i absolutely hate throwing away food. I've learned to cook smaller portions. Most of the time we eat everything. I will have a potluck day and reheat whatever has been left over from the week, but some things my husband can do without. I am also Caribbean and a southeast Asian descent, so we can eat simple foods - dahl, lentils, curry anything (mango, beans, eggs, bodi), baked bread with no yeast, vegetables, stew peas, etc, etc. My husband likes it, but these are not his favorites for leftovers.

Azure Standard: I love it! Prices are usually quite good and I get excellent quality goods, including ones I can’t find in my local stores. A few produce items are the only thing I’ve ever had problems with, and even then, no worse than at the grocery store.
Excited recently to see that they’re carrying pint & a half canning jars, which haven’t been in my stores for several years!
And, finally: YOU can become a drop location if there isn’t one close enough to you. There is a minimum required, I think, but maybe there are others in your area who’ve been wishing for a drop closer to home…

We should always be prepared for hard times and emergencies. 1987 and 2008 caused hard times for many. A big prep is a wood stove and a shed full of dry firewood. Don't place orders on line when you can purchase locally with cash. Orchards, berry patches, and gardens will help with long term survival. Victory Gardens started with WWI. I have found that my local stores occassionally put most items on sale at lower prices than the big stores. Stock up then. I regularly get things much cheaper than Walmart. Good video. Sounds like you and your husband are a good team. My late wife and I were each others' other half and got a lot done together. She died from a tick bite 7 years ago. If you are in the easthern US be very aware of ticks and their diseases. Good Luck, Rick

My mother and her parents went through the depression of 5 mortgages and eating oatmeal 3 times a day, but my grandmother never turned any hungry person away.
I learned frugality and conservative finances from them. My mother saved string, twist ties, used wrapping paper, buttons, all clothing (eventually rags), all yarn, etc. i learned to sew in and made all my own clothes. Sewing was so common that it is eas a big deal to buy storebought clothes. All clothes growing up were hand-me-downs, even bras. Socks and underpants tended to wear to shreds from one person. The most rewarding clothing was repurposed old clothing that was recut and sewn into updated fashions. I never made my clothes from flour sacks but i did make some things from the outsides of sheets that had worn through the middle. Clothing from China is so cheap that it is less than the cost of our fabric and notions. It seems like noone sews anymore. Even thrifters dont seem to rip and resew used clothing any more.
I am glad to have more machine-washable options these days. And modern high tech boots and coats seem much more effective than when I was a kid. And I am also glad that attitudes around girls and women wearing trousers are much more reasonable now.

Watch out for weevils in your flour. Good protein but not tasty eating bugs. Better idea is to buy a $300 grain mill and buy steel-cut oats cheap and other grains and beans and grind all this into flour so your flour stays fresh. I eat lots of healthy pancakes made from popcorn, beans, wheat. Pancakes are quick breads.

I am interested in making pet food if I was unable to buy it. I look after a lot of feral cats and they eat north of 50 pounds of food a week. I can get squirrels, rabbits, deer, feral hogs, turkey, quail, fish, etc. I am not certain how to save it for longer term storage for animals so that I can continue to feed everyone in the event of shortages. I thought about building a smoker but I really don't know if they'd eat smoked meat (they are pretty particular for being feral cats). Maybe I could boil the meat and grind it up. Or maybe there is a way to make dry food like one would buy? I helped my mother to can when I was a boy but my job was just pouring paraffin on top of the jars after mother filled them with whatever she was canning and so I know practically nothing about doing that at all.

Do you have any tips for kids that are picky eaters? My boyfriend and I are trying to get more into homesteading. For both of us, when our kids are at the coparent's houses, they are used to eating fast food takeout or freezer ready meals, lots of snacks, and they aren't expected to pitch in to help with chores. When they are with us it's a huge struggle to get them to go along with our choice of a more simple lifestyle, and it results in many struggles. We have tried talking to the other parents, but that has yielded further complications rather than easing the stress.

Be careful buying can goods by the case as then all of the cans have the same best buy date. If you do not have a large family that will soon use up that case of food, you might just want to get a few extra than what you would normally use each month, so that your extra cans will have different continual best buy dates.

Best by date does not mean the food is not good at that date. If the can is not bulging or leaking, you can safely eat the food.

    • @lf4061
      @lf4061 2 місяці тому

@@larrysmith6499 Actually, it means the company cannot guarantee the same amount of vitamins and minerals, et. as the food is slowly decomposing and after that time degrades enough to reduce these. So, even if it will not poison you, it may not also provide you with the sufficient nourishment that your body requires. By staggering your purchase dates and thus your best by or use by dates, this problem can be avoided and you will consume better quality foods.

You are doing good and speaking to people without bringing fear to them. I'm surprised that this waking up would ever come. I'm fortunate that I have been doing this for many years, I live in the country, really in the country, nearly all my neighbors do this just like they always did. and I'm a 79-year old widower.
For people on this site, listen to this lady. The only real problem if the electric goes down and you are even slightly prepared is the problem of hungry and often mean refugees, so work on having a community. And if you live in a rural area, never count on wild game for food. It will not last long is a bad time.

Although I really do appreciate your tips and your encouragement for people to be prepared, I do not fear the shtf scenarios. You may be asking yourself why. Well, part of it is probably because I am 70 years old and I have lived a very good life and if it ended today I would not be disappointed one bit. But mostly it's because I have always believed that people are either slaves or prisoners or both because no one was consulted before being thrown into this thing called life on earth. So therefore, we have no allegiance to anyone or anything and it is a cruel joke that people have this driving urge to stay alive when we have very little control over most of life anyway. A wise man once said that a good way to live this life is to "do the best you can and don't take life too serious."
That is exactly what I do. Have a nice day.😊
