    Friend of mine won one of these from an Arcade. If you had the high score at the end of the month you won it. He brought it home and we played it in his bedroom. it was in very good condition. Good ole days.

    Oh, maaan! I was a MONSTER on this game! Believe me, I got my 25c worth! That spinning knob was nice and heavy and terrific for the purpose. So fun to watch your video about this! All good wishes, Sir!

      Thank you Anton, Tempest is one of the most requested games we get, it's pretty wild how people still have great memories of it! See you on the next video!

      It's slightly before my time, but I can see why everybody liked it, it is so well designed. Very interesting concept for a game, and the gameplay is solid and doesn't really have any flaws in it, you could play it for a very long time and not get tired of it.... thank you for watching TexasTimelapse!

    1981.This tempest game was across the street from my high school. Most days I spent my lunch money here. Never passed through level 10 to 11. Seen a guy pass level 11. I still believe today he is a superhuman. Wish I could play once more. Its like I'm a an addict who hasn't had a fix in 35 years. Enjoyed the vid man!

    and the ' bending ' that you see when warping to the next level - that means that you have the image too large in the display - the lines should never bend if the monitor is setup correctly for size / one of my all time favs.

    I've spent countless dollars, and hours on this machine, when it was in a convenience store, and Diamond Jim's arcade, back in the 80s. Missed out on buying a used one for a couple hundred bucks, recently. Thanks for sharing this.

    LOVE LOVE LOVE. . . THIS GAME
    My OLDER brother LOVED this game FIRST. HE said, I could NEVER play this game well enough to reach the LEVEL his was at, and his friends agreed with that his assessment... CHALLENGE ACCEPTED practice began.
    After hundreds of quarters, hours, tired feet, eyes, & months spent practicing, this contest was ON.
    I proved him WRONG! With each of us having our friends surrounding us as the contest begin. After about 1 1/2 hours I ended up kicking his A**. Leaving my brother and his friends with their mouths hitting the floor in utter TOTAL disbelief. A day I will NEVER FORGET!!!.
    2020 update my brother says after decades he wants a REMATCH. 1 caveat we have to play on a stand-up Tempest arcade game like the one in the video. Of course challenge accepted!

      Ha that's very cool Paula, thank you for sharing that with us, I can see it in my mind, I'm imagining it in the back corner of a gas station, lol. Thanks for watching and good luck in your rematch, although you won't need it!

    Ah yes, my favorite of all the arcade games of the 1980s. Riding the spikes as one calls it to kill the flippers by rapid machine gun fire does work and is essential on the upper levels past level 33 ( yellow waves ). After yellow comes light blue then invisible and finally light green (level 81). Bonus for completing level 81 awards 898,000 points. There are many back door secrets to the game programmers put in to help test all levels. A publication called "joystick" published in the mid 80s listed all the backdoor secrets. Once it got out and arcade owners started losing $$$ Atari made a chip to be inserted that blocked the backdoor secrets from working. This chip was placed in some 1981 models and all 1983 models (BTW, i don't know why Atari didn't make a 1982 model). This chip was never put into the 1980 model because the 1980 model machines were designed differently to not allow such chip. IF you want the info on backdoor secrets drop me a line ( I know them all by memory). I can give you one hint but it will only work if you change the machine settings off "Free Play". This will also tell you if you have the prevention chip on your machine or not. So in "pay" mode it will cost you at least 50 cents (2 quarters). You must get up passed level 24 (the red "V") and your score must be higher than 186,000. Now if you are an expert you can work your way past level 24 and get your score above 186,000 on just 25 cents, but for most it will be 2 tries. on the second attempt you will start at level 24 the red "V". competing that wave gives you 183,000 bonus points then on the next level (Level 25 staircase) you need to ride the spikes and get a score ending in 06,11, or 12. Example: 186,011. Once you do that you stop and let the enemies kill you. Now, after the game is over and it goes to demo mode you should see 40 credits accumulate in the credit spot. If it does work, then you don't have the hack chip installed, and can perform all the other backdoor secrets. This can be done forever, but if you get your score to end in 00 (186,000) then that will freeze the game up forcing you to manually unplug the game or toggle the on/off switch in the back thus erasing all accumulated credits. Good luck out there and thanks for showing this awesome classic.

      That's pretty wild Jason, I'd never heard of that.... now I have to go try to get 186,000 points!

    I had to step out, half way through, but glad I came back for the rest. Learned a lot about surviving this game. LOL Can't afford the coin op version, but I have the crummy Arcade1up Legacy version, which I'm in the process of modifying to look more like the original. Got a sloped marquee coming, and am waiting for availability of the waterfall control panel. Nothing beats the original, though. Had no idea the coin-ops consumed so much power. No wonder an arcade operator needs a 30 amp box, or better to run all those vintage cabinets. Again, thanks. :)

    The Superzapper charge doesn't actually carry over to the next level. You get one use per level (plus a secondary use that is much weaker). Every time you start a new level it recharges.

    The angle between the sectors is critical in timing you shots of the flippers. For this reason, on Level 9 I prefer to hang out at the second sector from the right or left. Also, if you ever reach Level 16 (infinity), hang out on the left side.

      I agree. Can't fix something that's not broke. You were able to toggle between both games, and that made me randy..

    I loved this game and was a Master at at it. I played it for hours and hours but i did find out that if you won level 104 the game would shut down and reset everything including all high scores so i let it kill me before i finished it, I never did find out why the game did that, and many different machines at different placed did the same thing..

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  4 роки тому +1

      I've heard of different games like that doing that, mostly Pac-Man and Donkey Kong of course, I always heard it had to do with the software and the number 255. A lot of times they have little programs running that figure out statistics like time and bonus amounts, etc. and I think if you get the numbers to just the right place after it hits 255 it confuses everything.
      I didn't know Tempest did that though, of course to the general public (and me!) I'd never get anywhere near there anywhere so it doesn't matter lol

      The Dreaded Water Damage. Unfortunately about half of the games that pop up (any title) have some water damage on them.. they get it one of a couple ways, most people don't realize that the operators would move the games around from location to location so they'd be more 'fresh' at certain spots, sometimes the games would get caught in the rain on the back of the truck.. and then the bottoms often were damaged by people mopping the floor at locations... so unfortunately it leaves them swollen on the edges like this one was.

      Yes sir. These gems have a few years under their belts, while not particularly being built with that expectation.
      Been to a couple warehouse raids and my heart sunk by the condition. They just slurp up the water!
      My first dedicated was actually Crazy Climber back in 83! To see it beside the Christmas tree was unreal!
      I got Defender a year or so later, followed by Congo Bongo.
      Now due to the "wife factor", I have mame arcades.. sniff sniff
      When I win the lotto and get a bigger house, will go back to dedicated arcades..

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  6 років тому +1

      Good question Jose... on most of the early games, you took turns playing. So if you played a two player game, the first player would play one round, then it would stop, and give you a few seconds, and you'd let your buddy step up and use the same controls. Pac-Man, Galaga, Donkey Kong, Frogger, ?Asteroids, all those early games did that.

    This is the game everybody thinks is polybius I think the name polybius is being confused with the name Tempest and just like a lot of the Mandela effect examples once that name has been put into the psyche the Mind builds memories a seeing it in remembering it. I remember this game as a kid never could play it never really could play any video game worth a damn except Pole Position or spyhunter I don't know what it was I guess my mind was preoccupied with other things or maybe my peripheral awareness was not that great as a kid until I got a little bit older but I was always fairly decent it pinball I guess maybe because there's less going on you're just trying to keep the ball and play you don't have a bunch of other things shooting at you or flying at you that you have to dodge that would love to play this game nowadays to me this video game epitomizes my memories of the arcade from the 80s this game Tron Pole Position Pac-Man which I never really give a damn about Galaga and centipede and then in later in the 80s the video game Double Dragon came out and my uncle used to take me to the bowling alley and we would play that game and try and beat it and then the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle game came out I don't know early 90s Maybe maybe that was late 80s to I was just always amazed at the graphics but I game that I thought the graphics were even better and was even funner was Golden Axe by Sega man that was an awesome game

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  5 років тому
